Chapter 10 - The Passing Out Problem Solved
"You lied to us!" Caitlin yells at Barry as Cisco, Dr. Wells and I simultaneously wince at her volume. "How could you not tell us you're experiencing dizzy spells? We're your doctors. God knows what's going on inside your body. Your cells are in a constant state of flux. You could be experiencing cardiopulmonary failure or a transient ischemic attack!"
Barry looks over to Dr. Wells who simply says, "Mini-stroke; probably not."
"You of all people should know that in science, we share. We do not keep secrets." She finishes angrily before storming out.
"Wow... I haven't seen anyone make her that angry since Ronnie." Cisco adds before going to find her.
"Ronnie as in your brother-" Barry says gesturing to me.
"-and Caitlin's fiance who died in the particle accelerator explosion," I nod.
"Yeah. He is... missed." Dr. Wells says wistfully. "Now... Let's figure out why this is happening to you."
I call Cisco and Caitlin back into the Cortex to start setting up the treadmill as Barry changes into something more comfortable.
"We're all set," Cisco says before heading back to Dr. Wells and Caitlin as Barry eyes up the boxes behind him.
"We thought some padding wouldn't hurt." I smile at him before giving him a pat on the shoulder and heading toward the computers.
"You guys sure about this?" Barry asks and Cisco mocks hurt.
"Dude, really hurts that you question me like this. Most home treadmills have a maximum speed of about 12 miles per hour. This one has been Cisco'd. Trust me. It can handle your speed."
Barry shrugs and starts jogging before working his way up to super speed.
"Anything abnormal?" I ask, peering over Caitlin's head at Barry's vitals.
"Heart rate, blood pressure, nerve conduction all normal," Caitlin observes.
"For Barry," Dr. Wells adds.
"Brainwave function within standard limits." Caitlin shrugs as Cisco giggles and slaps my arm excitedly. "I told you the treadmill could take it."
"Maybe he's hungry?" I ask.
A smile grows on Dr. Well's face, "Well done, Ms. Raymond. Caitlin look at the glucose levels."
"Oh, my God. Of course. It was so obvious." Caitlin says, surprised that she didn't see it.
"Barry," Dr. Wells says over the intercom. "We think we know why you keep-"
Barry faints, crashing into the boxes and we wince at the sight.
"-passing out." Dr. Wells finishes awkwardly.
(A/n: Me looking at my grades. But in all seriousness Caitlin's reaction faces are the ABSOLUTE best. Her's and Ciscos.........and Barry's......and Joe's........and Eddie's.....pretty much everyone has their awkward moments and its amazing. Now back to the book xD)
Cisco, Caitlin and I carry Barry to one of the stretchers hook him up to IV bag.........after IV bag...........after IV bag. After about an hour of this, Barry finally wakes up. We all help him into a sitting position as he groans. "I passed out again?"
"Total metabolic failure brought on by acute hypoglycemia," Caitlin informs.
"I'm not eating enough, so an IV and I'm good to go," Barry says, completely oblivious to what the three of us had been doing.
I laugh as Cisco gestures as the tower of drained IVs. "Not even close. To adjust to your new super metabolism we needed about forty."
"Guess you were thirsty," Dr. Wells adds and I laugh again.
"We're gonna need to fashion you a new diet based on your metabolic changes," Cisco says. "I've done a few calculations. You need to consume an amount equal to roughly 850 tacos."
"Wait really? I thought it would be less with cheese and guac?" I add as Cisco's eyes widen.
"Girl, that is like a whole other set of equations." He responds before rushing back to his desk.
"For Mexican, I recommend Tito's." A familiar voice says. "On Bruckner Avenue? Best burrito in the city."
"Detective West." Dr. Wells greets as Barry and I share a nervous look. "What brings you to S.T.A.R. Labs?"
"When I couldn't find either of you at the lab, I started doing a little research. Turns out there's been reports of a red streak around the city, stopping muggers, rescuing people from burning buildings." Joe says, his eyes trained on Barry.
"You didn't tell him we were working together?" Wells asks.
"Joe, I can explain," Barry starts before he gets cut off.
"You already have a job in law enforcement, Barry. I suggest you get back to it." Joe says.
"Mm-hm," Caitlin says and Joe gives her a look. "Don't look at me! I'm on your side!"
"And Rani, what are you doing here?" Joe asks, realizing that I was present as well.
"I, uh," I stutter out before I make electricity spark down my hand. "That.........plus moral and tech support."
"So you've been helping him too?!" Joe asks and I stumble for an answer.
"Detective," Dr. Wells interjects, saving me from an awkward response. "We all want what's best for Barry."
"If you wanted what was best for Barry, you'd try to talk him out of this lunacy instead of encouraging him going out there risking his life!" Joe responds.
"You saw a man control the weather," Barry says. "What are the police gonna do against someone like that? Since the accelerator explosion, we suspect there may be more like him."
"And you're going to do what? Catch them with Raymond's help?" Joe asks and I clench my jaw.
Joe is cool and everything, but I hate it when people take one look at my smaller frame and immediately think I'm a pushover. They don't know what I've done and what I've seen.....
"Are you insane?" Joe says snapping me out of my daze. "You think because you can run real fast that you're invincible? You're not! You're just a kid. My kid."
"I'm not your kid Joe!" Barry snaps and I know he's crossed a line.
"Barry......" I say, trying to stop him before this rant goes a little farther than necessary.
"You're not my father," He continues, ignoring me. "My father's sitting in Iron Heights. Wrongfully convicted. You were wrong about him. And you're wrong about this. Now I may not be able to help him, but if I can save someone from a burning building or stop some armed thieves, I'm gonna do it. And you can't stop me. So don't try. "
I look at Joe's face and my heart melts for him. It's the same look my uncle gave me when I tried to run away. "You think you're so smart. All of you. But you don't know what you don't know. And I hope that you're clever enough to figure it out before somebody gets killed." Joe says before walking out, leaving all of us with a pit of doubt in our hearts.
------------The Next Day---------------
"You're here early," I comment, walking into the lab with two cups of coffee from Jitters.
Barry nods, handing me a box of donuts from the desk next to him and I gladly take one, handing him his coffee. "I just wanted to get some stuff done so I could leave early and-"
"-head back to STAR labs," I finish. "I get it. But are you okay?"
"What makes you ask that?" He snaps back and I raise and eyebrow, point proven.
He sighs and looks over at me,"I'm sorry. It's just that Joe's been by my side for anything since my mom died," Barry says. "It just-"
"Barry," I say, pulling him into a hug and he rests his head against my neck as I try to resist a blush. "Go easy on him Barry. His entire world has just been flipped upside down and he's found out that you're putting yourself right in the middle of it. He's scared for you Barry because he cares. Cherish that."
I feel him nod against me before pulling away. "Thank you," he says giving a small smile that I return. We both busy ourselves with work, leaving the room in a comfortable silence. Until Joe walks in and the tension in this room......well it increased faster than Barry can run.
"Come to yell at me again?" Barry asks and I shoot him a look. "Really Barry?"
"Simon Stagg's head of security was murdered last night. The coroner took some skin samples. Hopefully, they belong to the killer. See if you can find a match."
"Can't be a coincidence that Stagg's benefit was attacked last night," Barry says.
Joe nods. "I'm going to interview Stagg now. Rani, did you pull those lawsuits I asked for? Because you're coming for the ride"
"Yup," I nod, slipping my laptop bag over my shoulder. "Got them right here."
"I'll come with you," Barry says before Joe shoots him down.
"Your job is in here. Stay here and do it."
Iris walks in right as Joe's about to walk out, and during their exchange, Barry grabs my arm and I meet his worried, emerald eyes. "If anything happens, call me okay?"
"Don't worry," I smile. "I won't let anything happen to Joe."
He sighs, mumbling quietly when I turn the corner so no one will hear.
"It's not Joe I'm worried about."
