Chapter 3

Throughout the night, the thunder rumbled. Even in sleep, Dakota flinched and jerked every time the apartment shook. Jamie rubbed little circles into her back and hushed her, hoping she wouldn't wake up. Eventually, he dozed off as well.

Jamie woke up first. The room was lit up with sunshine beaming in. He looked down at her curled up in his arms. Her hair was draped around her neck and her hands held onto his strong arm. He was happy to see a content look upon her face.

"Mmmm," she groaned, opening up her eyes and squinting.

"Good morning, Sunshine!" Jamie greeted, "Feeling better?"

"Much," she replied groggily, "thanks for staying with me last night."

"Anytime," he answered. "That was one heck of a storm we got."

"It can do that every night if you're here," she said with a grin on her face.

With that, Jamie pulled her closer and kissed her. She parted her mouth to let him deepen the kiss. He nibbled on her tongue and softly tugged on her bottom lip.

"I could get used to waking up like this," she stated.

"Well as much as I'd like to stay, I've got to get back to my hotel for a change of clothes and a shower," Jamie said grudgingly.

Dakota looked up at his face. "Why don't you use my shower, throw back on your clothes from yesterday, and we'll go over and pick up your things together," Dakota suggested.

"You mean, like stay here with you?" Jamie asked.

"Yeah, is that a problem?" Dakota asked immediately regretting her suggestion. Maybe it was too soon to ask him that...she didn't want to scare him off.

"No, of course, I'd love to," Jamie reassured her. "That is, as long as you're okay with it."

"I wouldn't have asked otherwise," she smiled.

He turned over, releasing her from his arms, and got up, heading toward her bathroom. The bed felt cold without him in it next to her. She decided to get up herself and surprise him with eggs and waffles when he finished in the shower.

He walked out of the bathroom and followed the wonderful smell to the kitchen. She's got her back turned toward him watching the eggs sizzle in the frying pan. The waffles are already set out on two plates with a container of butter and syrup sitting nearby. On the small table are two glasses of orange juice.

"Mmm, something smells delicious," he stated as he startles her out of the thoughts. She jumps. "Sorry, love. I didn't mean to startle you."

"I hope you're hungry because those actually turned out right," she says as she gestures toward the waffles. "It's always a hit or miss with that waffle iron!"

"Famished," he simply returns. "I'm sure I'll love them no matter how they turn out as long as you're making them."

She turns and smiles. She grabs the plates and puts the eggs onto them, then carries them over to the table where he's sat down at.

"So what are your plans today?" she asks.

"I've got a meeting at noon. The rest of the day is devoted to you," he replies.

"Good, we'll go get your things and then you can head off to your meeting while I pick up Zep and take him for a walk," she states.

"Can he wait until I'm done? I'd like to go with you," he asks hopefully.

"Yeah, sure," she says, "Are you sure though? I mean, we're just going for a walk in the park. It's not going to be the most exciting thing in the world..."

"Believe me, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else," he says. "Where is he, anyway?"

"At the doggie spa...I had to board him when I had that interview earlier this week in LA. It was just too much of a hassle getting him back and forth for a two-day trip," she answers.

Jamie nods. They finish up their breakfast and he starts to wash the dishes.

"Thank you for the incredible breakfast. I'll clean up while you're getting ready," he says.

"No problem," she replies. "Thanks for cleaning!"

At 10:30, once Dakota's dressed and ready to go, they leave to head to the hotel that Jamie's staying at. As they are walking, Jamie gets an uneasy gut feeling. He turns around but can't see anything out of the ordinary from the crowd. He shrugs it off and decides that it's probably nothing and not worth mentioning to Dakota. They hail a cab and he forgets about the feeling.

They get to the hotel and he quickly gathers his things and let's the front desk know that he is checking out. Dakota waits patiently during all of this down in the hotel lobby. As Jamie turns around from the front desk, only rolling one suitcase behind him, his eyes meet hers and motion toward the door, silently asking if she's ready. She nods and stands to join him.

"You travel light," she says as they walk out the door.

"What can I say? The only thing I really need is you," he replies, looking at her adoringly. "Anything else can be purchased at my destination."

"I doubt your sisters would feel the same way," she replies.

"Well I would hope not!" Jamie interrupts.

"No, what I mean is, we gals need our favorite outfits, shoes, and accessories!" she laughs at his little outburst.

He playfully grins at her. "So where are we headed?" he asks.

"I'm going to go pick Zeppelin up," she replies. "It's just a few blocks up."

"Ok, do you mind taking my bag back to your apartment while I'm at the interview?" he asks.

"No, of course not. I'm going to be headed back that way anyway. I want to surprise you afterwards," she says.

They get to the doggie spa and she is reunited with a wagging tail and lots of licks.

"Hey baby!" she greets Zep. "I missed you so much!"

"Babe, I've got to go. I'll meet you later. If you want, I'll call you after I'm done and we'll meet up at Central Park," Jamie says checking his watch.

"Yeah, sure. I'll see you later," she replies, taking his bag in one hand and Zeppelin's leash in the other." She walks back up to the counter to pay and thank them for taking such good care of her baby.

As Jamie heads off to his interview, the intense feeling of being watched surrounds him again and he thinks back to his earlier gut feelings while leaving Dakota's apartment. He looks around but, other than what looks like normal people going on about their day, he doesn't find anything suspicious. Maybe it's his imagination getting the better of him, he thinks.

As Dakota walks out, there's no sign of Jamie in sight. She starts walking back toward where Jamie was staying, deciding to let Zep get at least a little exercise in.
