Prologue

The woman sighed, glancing down at the bundle in her arms. Her baby gazed up at her, her mismatched yellow and blue eyes full of love and trust. She smiled faintly, brushing a hand over the soft tufts of her daughter's hair as the infant cooed and sucked her thumb.

She was ready to run, ready to leave, but her mate needed something. He needed to go back and offered no explanation as to why. But he was already taking too long and she needed him back. She couldn't leave without him.

The woman took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves as she glanced up at the surrounding forest.

Everything would be fine.

Her mate would rejoin them. He promised he would. He vowed to her that he'd be back before the violence reached them and they could leave.

Her tail flicked anxiously as she looked back up at the trees. An Ikran screeched in the distance, making her flinch.

It would all be okay.

She hoped.

A deafening bang sent her already anxious mind into a panic. Her head whipped around wildly, her ears flicking back and forth, trying to determine the source as she clutched onto her baby who had cried out. The forest around her erupted with the frantic calls of animals.

Another explosion followed. And another. Then another. Each one was louder, closer, and more terrifying than the last.

Then came the crack- a sharp ear-splitting sound that made her freeze. Agonized screams of other Na'vi rose in the distance, and the woman's gaze snapped to Home Tree.

It was ablaze, splintering, groaning underneath its own weight from the force of the explosions, and it was...falling right towards her and her baby.

Her heart seized as she dashed into the forest, clutching her now crying baby to her chest.

The tree was getting closer and closer, its shadow devouring the sunlight. Bits of wood and embers rained down. Clouds of ash and smoke choked the air, making it impossible to breathe.

Despite her coughing, despite her lungs being on fire, she pushed on. She needed to save her baby. She needed to keep her daughter alive.

The woman's foot caught on a root. She stumbled, twisting her ankle, her baby slipping from her arms.

"No!" she cried, her throat raw from the smoke as she scrambled forward on her hands and knees. "Aneya!" She clawed through the underbrush, ignoring her throbbing ankle and the branches cutting her skin. Her baby's wail pierced through the roar of the collapsing timber. Where was her mate? Why wasn't he here? She needed him.

Where was he?!

Then the tree fell.

The ground heaved as a crushing mass of splintered wood engulfed her. She screamed as pain tore through her body, the massive logs pinning her legs, her chest, her arms.

"Aneya!" She rasped her voice weak and raw. Her head was tilted towards the sky as a single tear traced a path through the grime on her face. She could just make out the sun behind the clouds of smoke. "Find..her.."

Her voice faltered as the words caught in her throat. Her head fell to the side as her vision darkened. She gasped as she breathed, the air a strange rattle in her lungs.

In, out, in, out, in...

The air left her chest as her final breath passed her lips, and the world faded to black.
