XLIX

On December twenty fourth, Harry got up at the crack of dawn with the intention of baking two cupcakes for Louis and their daughter. It was Louis' twenty first birthday and Josie's third one. What started out good ended up being a nightmare when the frosting looked ugly and he had messed up the writing on top of them. He took a deep breath and just grabbed the candles in the shape of a one, two and three and stuck them into the chocolate cupcakes. He made his way upstairs and when he opened the door, he found Louis struggling to do Josie's hair into two pigtails. Their baby girl was sitting on the bed crying and rubbing her eyes, mad that she had been woken up when she was still tired.

"Happy birthday!" Harry exclaimed as soon as he walked into the room, being careful with the two small cupcakes. He started singing happy birthday to his two loves, noticing Louis placing his hand on the side of his belly which meant that their son was now awake too.

"Look what daddy got us, baby!" Louis cheered, trying to cheer his daughter up. He was happy to see her smile and look excited over her cupcake with her name on it and a number three candle.

"Blow on the candle, baby." Harry put the cupcake in front of her, then he and Louis cheered when she blew it.

"And now it's mama's turn!" Harry placed the cupcake in front of Louis and told him to make a wish. When Louis blew the candles, it was Harry's and Josie's turn to cheer.

It was easier for Louis to finish doing his daughter's hair when she was busy eating her cupcake. They were still staying at John's place where they were going to eat breakfast there then have lunch at Anne's place later that day. Harry had decided to finally give Josie the doll house he had built for her back when she was a baby now that she was old enough. He just hoped she liked it, remembering Louis telling him that she was going to love it. What little kid didn't love a big doll house. Especially one made by daddy just for them.

John and Evelyn quickly hugged him and their granddaughter, wishing them a very happy birthday. Josie got a baby doll from them that freaked Harry out when it looked too real. It cried, whined, and made facial expressions. But Josie was in love with it and no one was going to take it away. Louis got money as a birthday present that he didn't want to take, but finally did when his parents told him it was a birthday present that he deserved. He was doing well in school and the following year he was heading to UCLA to continue his studies there. They were proud of their son and how far he'd come.

Around lunch time they headed to Anne's place and as soon as they opened the door their mouths watered at the smell of food. Louis immediately saw the doll house a few feet away from the Christmas tree, smiling when he heard Josie gasping. She had her little hands over her mouth, looking so excited and barely able to contain herself.

"Wow!" She exclaimed, still holding onto her mama's hand. "Look, mama!"

"Do you like it, baby?" Harry asked her, smiling when she nodded frantically. "Happy birthday, princess! Daddy made it for you when you were a little baby like Jamie."

"What do we say, baby?" Louis told her, letting go of her hand when she ran to Harry and wrapped her arms around his neck.

"Thank you, thank you, daddy!" Josie exclaimed, hugging her father hard, pulling back a moment later to kiss his cheek over and over again.

She then let go of her father and ran towards the doll house giggling while Louis filmed the whole thing. She jumped up until she got a hold of the big bow on top and took it off, putting it on her head instead before it fell off. Harry went to her as soon as she started grabbing all the little furniture and grabbed three of her dolls so they could play. Louis joined them a few seconds later and they played together until Anne was calling them for lunch.

Christmas morning Josie was the first to wake up and after waking up both of her parents, they made their way downstairs to open the Christmas presents. She gasped when she saw all the presents under the tree that hadn't been there the night before and then the empty plate of cookies and glass of milk she and her parents had left out the night before for Santa. Harry was still rubbing his knee when he had bumped it into the chimney when he almost knocked down the tree the night before when he and Louis were bringing out Josie's presents.

"A kitty!" Josie announced as soon as she unwrapped a present from Niall.

"A what?" Louis sat up, but quickly relaxed when he saw it was a box with the picture of a cat wearing a sweater on the front.

"It's from Niall." Harry told him, making sure Josie couldn't hear him. "It's a kit to crochet sweaters for the cats."

"From Santa, mama." Josie told Louis, giving him the box so he could open it then took out a stuffed kitten from the same package. She hugged it to her chest then set it down right next to the jewelry making kit Anne had given her.

"I don't know how to crochet." Louis opened the box, taking out an instructions booklet. He started getting uncomfortable when his belly started hurting. He knew they were Braxton Hicks when he had read about them and all he had to do was stand up and walk around so that's what he did.

"You okay, Lou?" Harry asked him, grabbing the next present for Josie to open. His parents and Louis had already opened the presents he had gotten for them and Lexi.

"Just Braxton Hicks, no big deal." He shrugged it off but of course he knew Harry was going to worry when he saw the look on his face. "They're not actual contractions, Harry. It's December and he's due in February." He reminded him.

That seemed to calm Harry down who nodded and went back to watching Josie open her gifts. When she was done the living room was a right mess before Louis started cleaning up with Anne's help. She had been nothing but nice to him and Louis was glad when he didn't want his last days in that house to be uncomfortable. After he was done doing that and folding a few clothes he had washed, he made his way upstairs and found Josie taking a nap on her bed surrounded by her stuffed animals then Harry sitting on their bed holding another gift.

"You got another gift?" Louis smiled, wondering why he hadn't opened it yet.

"This...this is actually for you." Harry told him, causing Louis to furrow his brow when he looked nervous.

Louis took it,wondering what it was when it wasn't wrapped like a christmas present nor a birthday one. Harry was looking at him with anticipation in his eyes that only made him want to hurry up to open it. When he finally did, he found a small box inside and that's when his heart started beating faster. He thought Harry was proposing when he opened the box and found a ring inside until his boyfriend started talking.

"It's a promise ring." He explained when he saw the panic on Louis' face. "I promise to always love you and to always be there for you. I know you want us to get married when we both agree to it and it's a good time and this is my promise to it." Harry finished, not expecting Louis to burst out crying.

"Oh Harry..." Louis sobbed as he wrapped his arms around Harry's neck. "This is perfect."

"Don't cry." Harry hugged his boyfriend and rubbed his back. "Josie might wake up, hear you and come in here trying to beat me up because I made her mama cry." Harry joked, smiling when it made Louis snort.

"She won't." Louis tried to wipe his nose with his sleeve but Harry quickly handed him a Kleenex.

"Yeah, you're right." Harry hugged Louis tighter.

That night Louis wanted to stay up with Harry to watch a movie but he was too exhausted and had ended up falling asleep halfway through the movie. As the days passed by, Harry expected to get a call from the manager Vikki but when he never heard anything he started losing hope. That is until the first monday of the new year when he got a call while making breakfast for Louis and Josie. Harry was glad only his boyfriend and daughter were the only ones there when Vikki had told him he and Louis could go sign a rental agreement.

"Guess who can move into their new apartment as soon as we sign a rental agreement." Harry sang sung as he served the pancakes he had made.

"Really?" Louis asked as he tried so hard to contain his excitement.

"Yup!" Harry smiled as he placed the plate in front of Louis, kissing the top of his head as he made his way to give Josie her food.

"Daddy, my kiss!" Josie pouted when Harry walked away to get his own plate.

"Sorry sorry!" Harry grabbed his plate and made his way to his daughter where he smacked a kiss on the top of her head.

"When can we go?" Louis' smile never left his lips and that's what Harry liked to see.

"Today if we want to. I do want at least one of our parents to be there with us."

"I can ask my dad, or we can ask Robin or Des." Louis suggested. He really wanted his dad to be there. "Zayn found me a really nice bed for Josie on facebook. I made an offer so I hope no one else gets it." He said as he took his time to grab his phone and look for the bed frame.

It was a white wood platform with drawers and when he showed Harry, his boyfriend let out a low whistle as he nodded, impressed.

"We get her a new mattress and she'll be good to go." Harry suggested.

"Mama, I have bed." Josie pointed out, pursing her lips as she stared at her mother.

"But we're getting you a new bed for even bigger girls. Isn't that exciting, baby!?" Louis exclaimed in excitement, clearly trying to get her excited.

"YES!" Josie exclaimed.

"You get a new bed and Lexi can have your old crib." Harry said but it was clearly the wrong thing to say when she stared at him and pursed her lips again, not liking the idea.

"I want old bed." She decided.

"The old bed is for babies. Are you a baby?" Louis told her. "Claire is getting a new bed for even bigger girls. Don't you want your own too?"

"Yeah..." Josie poked her pancakes with her fork, clearly still not fully convinced.

"I'm sure that once you see your new bed you're going to love it." Harry kissed her cheek and smiled at her as he poured syrup on her pancakes.

That afternoon they found themselves at the apartment's office signing a new rental agreement after John and Robin both had read it. When they finally got their new keys Louis almost burst out crying as his dad took pictures to have memories. They decided to go check out the apartment again and Louis couldn't help but tell Harry where he wanted everything to go. He was having fun until he realized that they didn't even have couches, much less a dining table. Harry had been able to stop his waterworks when he had assured him they could go shop for new ones or gently used ones. His mood had improved more when the bed he wanted for Josie was sold to him, having to pay twenty more dollars for the bed to be delivered to their new home by the seller. Everything was perfect when they got her a brand new mattress she found comfy and a new bedspread and bedsheets..

It wasn't easy to tell Anne, but she had ended up accepting it when there was nothing she could do about it. They started packing their things the next day, grateful that at least they had a bed for themselves when Harry had gotten his bed with his own money. Evelyn had insisted on Louis taking his old dresser for Josie's bedroom when Harry was taking his own too. When it came to Josie's toys she had been tasked with the difficult decision to decide which toys she wanted to leave behind for whenever she came over. It had been a waste of time when she had refused to leave any behind.

Instead of taking quite a few trips, Harry had rented a moving truck, grateful for his friends and parents when they helped move all of their stuff. Once at the apartment, he could see his mother checking it out then smile at Evelyn as she said something. He was glad she had approved of it. The family of three made one final trip to their old home to pick up the cat and his things, having to say goodbye to Dusty and Balto, realizing how hard it was going to be for Josie when she started crying as soon as she realized they were going to be left behind. Their daughter clearly wasn't done saying goodbye, so they let her play with both pets until she got tired.

They watched her with raised eyebrows as she ran to the car, placing her backpack on the floor of the car and got in. They thought nothing of it until they got to the apartment complex and Harry brought an asleep Josie inside while Louis got Cat and her things. He was changing her into her pajamas before waking her up to brush her teeth when his phone started ringing. He wondered if something was wrong when he saw it was his mother on the caller ID.

"I can't find the cat." His mother's scared voice came through the speaker, putting Harry on high alert.

"Did he get out?" He asked her, leaving Josie for now as he slowly made his way to the living room where Louis was just about to go through Josie's backpack.

"I'm a hundred percent sure he didn't. You know that ever since we started with the coyote problem I don't let him go out anymore." Anne sounded upset and Harry just knew what she was thinking.

"Mom, if he got out you know Dusty's smart. He won't be their next meal." Harry flinched when he said that, quickly turning around to look at Louis when he gasped.

"How is he gonna be a meal when he's right here!" Louis moved aside to show his boyfriend the cat who was poking his head out of Josie's new and bigger backpack her papa Robin had gotten her.

"Did she really..?" Harry started laughing, completely ignoring his mom asking him what was going on in favor of slapping his thigh.

"Harry it's not funny!" Louis exclaimed. "She dumped the whole bag of treats in here and now it stinks like fish. And Dusty ate most of them so now he's gonna be sick."

"Harry, what is going on?" Anne demanded to know.

"Don't worry about Dusty, mom. He's here with us. Josie literally stole him and brought him home. I'll drop him off tomorrow." Harry explained, hearing his mom sighing in relief.

"Oh thank god! Give Josie a goodnight kiss for me. I love you, kids."

"We love you too, mom." Harry hung up and watched as Louis let Dusty out then went to the kitchen to empty out the backpack in the trash can. "Are you mad?" He asked.

"Yes." Louis sighed. "Your dad spent money to have her initials embroidered on the bag and I know she's only three and she doesn't know any better but I keep trying to teach her to take care of her things and she won't listen. I'm just glad I can wash it."

"Me too! Do you wanna go to bed or are you going to shower? We need to wake Josie up and brush her teeth." Harry said as he checked for the time. His eyes widened when he saw it was almost eleven.

"I can brush her teeth while you set up the litter box." Louis suggested, getting a nod right away.

It was dangerous to have contact with the litter box while pregnant and he was grateful Harry was always there to clean it up. He let Dusty and Cat get used to their new apartment while he went to try and wake up Josie so he could brush her teeth. He ended up with a crying toddler as he brushed her teeth and when he was done he took her to her new room, changed her into clean pajamas then laid her down on her new bed. He then waited there for Harry to come kiss her goodnight.

"Is she asleep?" Harry asked as he walked into her bedroom.

There were a few boxes around the bedroom and her walls were still bare but with time they were going to make the bedroom look appropriate for a three year old girl and a baby boy.

"She passed out as soon as I set her down on the bed. She's exhausted." Louis whispered, his hand moving to caress her soft red cheek.

"I bet. I'm guessing it can't be easy to carry Dusty around." He stood next to Louis and looked down at his baby princess. "Where does she even get her crazy ideas from?"

"I don't even want to know." Louis kissed her goodnight, moving aside to let Harry do the same and tuck her in.

When Harry did that, Louis turned her new night light on then they left to their new bedroom, making sure to leave the doors open in case Josie needed them. She was in a new strange place for her and they didn't want her to wake up and find their doors closed. They brushed their teeth together then they went to their bedroom where they had only set up their bed and nightstands. They rummaged through their bags, trying to find their pajamas, quickly realizing they didn't put any in their backpacks where they had put a new change of clothes for the next day. .

"Great..." Louis muttered as he looked around, wishing he could see through the boxes.

"You sit down and I'll look for them." Harry kissed Louis' forehead, glad that his boyfriend listened to him.

Harry rummaged through a few boxes unti he found the pajamas he was looking for. Louis took the pajama bottoms and one of Harry's old shirts his boyfriend handed him and started changing right away. Their plan was to have some celebratory sex to celebrate that they finally had their own place. But as soon as their heads hit their pillows Louis knew Harry had fallen asleep when he started snoring, which only happened when he was extremely tired. He hadn't even managed to fully cover himself with their blankets so Louis did it for him. He kissed his lips once, said goodnight to his baby and went to sleep.

Later that night it felt like Louis had only slept for a few minutes but realized it had been hours when he looked at the clock that read two in the morning. He didn't know why he was awake and was about to go back to sleep when he heard Josie start to cry. He quickly got up and made his way to her bedroom, turning the light on as he walked in. his baby girl was sitting in the middle of the bed, squinting at him with eyes full of tears.

"What's wrong, baby?" Louis cooed. He took a seat on the bed and opened his arms watching his daughter crawl to him. Josie didn't say anything but Louis was sure she was probably scared after waking up in a new place.

"Water..." Josie mumbled then swallowed as she wrapped her arms around Louis' neck.

"Let's go get you some water." Louis got up and carried her to the kitchen, knowing he wasn't supposed to but he didn't care.

He found her a water bottle, letting her drink as she pleased. When she was done he took her to the bathroom then to her bedroom. He ended up taking her back to his bedroom when she absolutely refused to sleep in her new bed, claiming that she would miss him too much. Louis caved in after that but if he was honest, he had a better night sleep with his family in his bed with him.
