01 | a strange autumn day

Sometimes, we were afraid of failing at the tasks that we needed to complete. Slowly, it reached procrastination and that was what I was doing now.

I shouldn't had procrastinated earlier. Because to me, it drained all of my energy right now.

I didn't mean to procrastinate on the book review I was assigned to until my due date. Which was today. Today as in midnight, so I literally had a few hours before I went and submitted it to school. Just so you know, I was busy scrolling the Internet on how to improve my storytelling skills and brushing my uneven hair. It was not a surprise if my friends pointed out to me that my hair was practically... strange.

I clutched my hair tightly and continued to write whatever words my brain forced to squeeze out for the sake of my book review. And well, never forget your boost tea. I had to buy iced lemon tea at the nearby convenience store in this chilly weather. Burlington sure was chilly, especially night time. Brr.

Typing sounds washed over my laptop as I endured myself to not sleep. If the President of the Literature Club was another person, I would be glad to ignore this. But it had to be Prez Tristan. Tristan was a pretty annoying guy. Whenever someone forgot her/his tools for the club, he would force them to write 'I will not do this again anymore in the next class' ten pages. I knew they deserved a punishment or something, but shouldn't Miss Teresa, our club supervisor, decide it?

I scoffed at the thought of it. My alarm blared on time when I finished printing it out. I pulled out my uniform and prepared my backpack as I rushed into the bathroom.

A swarm of hi's and hello's flew over the hallway as I stepped on the second floor. The second floor of Maple Creek High School was occupied by grade ten to twelve, so I had no choice but to blurt out the replies loudly and squashed in the crowd.

Isis, my best friend who I assumed will be late for the first class this morning, was not in the crowd. I sighed and I sauntered into the class, but I was stopped by someone else.

"Have you done the book review, Rheanne?"

That someone else turned out to be Prez Tristan. I forced myself to smile.

"Um, class starts in like five minutes?" I questioned. Oh please, get away from my sight, dear Prez.

"I have to get it now, Rheanne." He furrowed his eyebrows, clearly not showing any signs to leave.

"Fine, here," I handed him the review and dashed off inside the class, right along with the teacher as she put down her books and started taking absents. I hoped the review was fine for him, hopefully.

I concentrated fully on the class and it felt like a blur when it ended nicely. I exited my first class and strolled inside for my next door class. There, I saw Isis grinning above me with her palm supporting her chin as I sat beside her. Well, that was rare.

"Where were you earlier?" I asked, knowing that her answer was obvious from the start.

"Y'know, the usual skipping." She was skipping the first class, and I know very well that she was not a fan of being an early bird. Isis yawned and popped in a piece of tangerine she took from her bag and smirked sheepishly. We had been best friends since junior high school and I was glad that I had been so lucky to have her as my best friend, companion, partner in crime, yep.

"Figures," I nodded.

The class ended like a blur, again. I tried my best to pay attention to what the teacher explained, but seriously, exhausted was the best word to describe me right now. Isis looked relaxed, she had the confidence to ace the class and I had none. But, really, I was just an average student. We walked side by side together into the cafeteria and a whiff of scent captured my nostrils.

It smelled like earth and nature, like someone poured a bucket of Mother's Nature perfume. I tried to focus and my face contorted in confusion when two unfamiliar guys walked past us. The sunlight shone on the other's honey blonde hair and amber eyes, making him look so godly and maybe a golden retriever? He oozed confidence, a boyish grin appeared on his face (I assumed he had joked with his friend) and he draped his arm around his friend's shoulder. He's wearing our school's uniform, but it seemed like it was a bit tight on his body.

His friend's face contorted into something, likely from being annoyed when he did that.

I gasped lightly when his soft brown hair and forest green eyes ignited something tingly in my heart. Like someone put some serotonin boost inside me. He looked like a college student, tall and mature with his black backpack strapped over his back with clothes that were definitely not suitable for high school's attire. A gray hoodie, black jeans, and Doc Martens black boots, definitely a college student.

His messy hair swept over his forehead, but not too much for it to cover his eyes. He didn't look over 20 and he was the one who gave off a lot of nature's scent. Like he really belonged on Earth than any other humans. Some might say that he was the Greek God Adonis or something.

I broke my gaze off of him as soon as his eyes marched forward, passing us with a faint smell of his scent.

I turned my gaze to Isis and poked her shoulder, "Hey, who are they?"

We sat around a table and pulled out our lunch from our bag.

"Who?" She tilted her head, eyebrows furrowed.

"The two guys who walked past us earlier," I stated.

Isis groaned, "Zen? I don't know who's beside him, but I know Zen." She continued, "I don't like him, we fought over something yesterday. He gives off this cocky vibe that I really hate from a guy, y'know."

Prying information from Isis didn't help my curiosity fall down, it surely meant that I must pry more from Zen. Even if it meant that I had to suffer the embarrassment of rejection. But not today, sleep was calling me to come home early.

I stabbed my veggies and gulped it down hurriedly, trying to pick up Isis' pace. That girl really ate very fast like she hadn't eaten for a week. It was a gift that I hadn't choked after all.

Fast forward to the school bell ringing, pointing out that it was time for us students to leave, I approached the school's gate and looked up as I walked.

The sky was having a tantrum. It was gloomy when I had to take a walk from school to my house. I hoped the rain would refrain from starting because I didn't want to walk into the house like a drenched cat, and it was tiresome to clean the droplets. I clenched my fists around my backpack, inspecting the sky like I had a grudge on it.

Isis stayed a little late, I think she didn't want to go home early. She didn't like something cozy, which included her house so I guessed school may be it for her.

Just as I was about to take a turn, a crash startled me. It was near the turn that I was going to walk in, so I hid in the corner and squinted my eyes to spot the culprit.

Two guys versus one guy.

Well, one guy, you were definitely meant to be dead meat. Except that he wasn't. Guy 1 threw a punch and Guy 2 kicked his stomach, the loner guy grunted in pain and swung his fists back. Then threw off his backpack onto them, which they hit the trash can behind them.

Ooh, double pain.

I winced when the loner guy banged their head together, a high pitch scream came from Guy 1 when he looked at the loner guy.

"You, you... Who the fuck are you?! What are you, shit!" Guy 1 scrambled from the ground and tugged Guy 2 with him. They staggered when they hit the pole accidentally.

Loner Guy stared at them like some lunatic and cleaned his wounds using the side of his shirt. I supposed that I had to retreat now, but I paused when loner guy's eyes spotted me. And I fought back my gasp when I saw that his wounds became pinkish scars, then went back to his pale skin. Wow, I'd never admit this but was he an immortal? Well, fight me and my fantasy dreams.

Oh my God.

Any other person would freak out, and I was one of them.

A thunder came like a flash of lightning and the loner guy seemed scarier than before.

I ran in the opposite way where I was going and clutched my backpack tight so it wouldn't bounce off rapidly. I went pale when I spotted that he was catching me up, yelling at me to stop running and let him explain. Well, man, there was nothing to explain. It gave off that you were an immortal straight in the brain.

I yelped when he caught the strap of my backpack and I rattled as I closed my eyes, frightened that he would change me into a rat. Damn me and my fantasy addict mind. He was not a witch, right? Or, a werewolf? Oh my God. I closed my eyes, waiting for the impact hitting me. It was not like he'd hit me, right?!

"Why are you closing your eyes?" A deep, pleasant voice sweeped over my ears. His rough breath caught up the pace as he slowly calmed down.

"Um, I'm not?" I hesitantly replied. Rheanne, you idiot. You were clearly closing your eyes, waiting for him to hit you or whatever.

My eyes creaked open as I found him already standing in front of me, crossing his arms over his chest. Probably waiting for my, um, confession as to why I was here. Like witnessing his fight.

Yep, kinda pointing the fact out, Rheanne.

"I, uh, that was amazing. You know, your injuries drying up within seconds. I liked it, no, I loved it. Guess what? I will not tell this to anyone. I assure you, bud. Toodles!" I rambled and quickly tried to run. Tried to run.

"You're not going anywhere, girl." He grunted at the 'girl' and dear me, that scared me. Moreover, it turned out loner guy was that college guy I met earlier in school!

"Did you see that just now?" He asked.

"Your... immortality?" I asked back.

"Yes."

"No."

"You did."

"I did."

He pinched his nose bridge and glared at me. I bet he was going to strangle me right now.

"But I don't believe you." I smiled and smacked his hand when he tried to grab my wrist. Not today, bud.

"I don't have to prove it to you," he retorted.

"Um, well, you don't." The lazy reply from me didn't even change his expression. The wind blew our direction hard and it made his hood fall over his neck.

God's creation certainly was magnificent.

His forest green eyes really blurred out all of his features immensely as I stared at them. It was hypnotizing, sure, and there was a small scar up his right eyebrow. Noticeable, if you were standing close to him. You know and the usual handsome cheekbones and whatsoever. He just made himself look like a warrior from... Hell. Yep, Hell.

Except that he was fantastically good-looking to look at.

"Hey."

And oh, his soft brown eyes. Yummy.

"Hey."

"Uh, what?" Did I just daydream?

"You will cooperate with me and never tell a single soul about this. You hear me, right?" Did he just threaten me? Ugh, considering that his fight was interesting. Well, his immortality was interesting for me to research about, I simply nodded and he left by riding his skateboard.

Smooth.

But something didn't add up, I swore.

Then I realized.

"Hey! No one would believe me if I babble this out!" I screamed and flailed my arms for him. He jerked his head back and stopped his skateboard in a swift motion.

His face showed like 'Yes, no one. But something will.' expression and continued skateboarding to where he went. Woah, chills. He was definitely the Devil, alright.

Afterwards, I went home like a normal high school student would.

But for all that, I didn't know that I was going to face another of his immortality skills again.
