Alright, I was browsing through Wattpad, looking at different fabrications, when something caught my eye. A canon character x OC love story. Seemed innocent enough, I thought I'd give it a go.

Grammar was borderline terrible, but I could keep going. Seemed interesting enough, author was probably a preteen or young teen, and it was their first fan fiction. I can deal.

But oh my god. The age. The age!!!

Canon character had to be at least 30, maybe a bit older. Well, their real age would be like a billion years old or whatever, but they looked at least thirty.

OC character was... thirteen years old!!

Jesus Christ, they haven't even entered high school yet, and they are (literally) fucking some guy (they had just met) who has all the wisdom the world has to offer, and doesn't even look twice her age! He's like three times her age!!

Look, you want to have romance with a character around your age? Fine, fine. But what isn't fine is when you have a canon character that is so much older than them!

You know what that kind of situation is called?

Pedophilia, because an adult is having an intimate relationship with a minor.

And I am just not okay with that. But I'm not going to call them out on it or tell them to stop; it's only their problem if Wattpad has a problem with it.

But please, for the love of all things good, if you're going to have romance with a canon character at least make your own character of age. Or at least as old if not a couple years younger/older than said canon character.

It was incredibly disturbing to read the age, and I just stopped reading. I read some comments, and other people were somewhat concerned with this problem, however they didn't try and stop the author (which they shouldn't have, I'm just saying).

So yeah, if you're writing a fanficiton, please please please be aware of the age of your characters, and try not to romanticize a literal crime. That is just not okay with me.
