July 2nd, 2017

Dylan was standing at the cash register at 11:27am getting bored by the minute.

Business was slow that day and there was not much to do but stand there. Everyone was outside enjoying their summer while the poor workers were cooped up inside.

Sam was on shift at the register next to him and she leaned on the counter just as disinterested as he was.

She looked over at him while taking another bite of a sliced apple from a bag of apples she snagged from the fridge.

She held out a apple slice to him.

He held up two fingers, "Two please?"

The girl obeyed and gave the fruit to him.

The man turned around, making sure she didn't see what he was about to do. Curious, Sam continued to stare his way.

Then, Dylan turned around with the two slices of apple shoved up into his teeth like a Walrus.

He mimicked the noise of the animal, clapping his hands together, "Arf! Arf!"

That's when Samantha burst out laughing as he made a fool of himself next to her.

Dill took the apples out of his canine teeth and bit into them to eat, staring at his friend laugh.

It felt good to see her laugh.

Soon Sam pulled something out of her pocket.

An orange.

She twisted her body around so he couldn't peek at her.

He tried to, in which she pushed him away playfully.

Not for long, she turned back to him her mouth closed, but something was definitely in there.

Sam slowly smiled wide at him, revealing the orange peel in front of her teeth.

This was Dylan's turn to cackle.

Their banter was catching all the other employees attention, and then the whole building.

"Ahem."

The two looked up over the counter and they saw it was Dave.

"Why are you both fooling around over here?"

Dylan saw Sam was about to fire back at the manager. He thought about what she had told him about Mr. Stevens the other day. Worry began to boil over.

He stopped the girl by putting his hand on her arm, making eye contact with his boss, "I'm sorry, sir. It was my fault. I was bored and I wanted to goof around."

"You know how I feel about goofing around."

"I know. That was my mistake. It won't happen again, sir."

Dave peered at Dylan sternly, then looking over at Sam who gave the stink eye right back.

He huffed and backed away, "I better not here anymore laughing over here."

Dylan replied as he walked off, "You won't, sir."

Samantha pulled on Dylan's arm now and whispered, "You didn't have to do that."

"I know you can handle yourself," he paused, "but I don't need you taking the bullet for me."

She made eye contact with him and nodded, sort of relieved, "Thanks."

"Anytime."

They both parted and stood at their separate registers, looking over at each other from time to time.

...

Kevin and Dylan rested in the break room a few hours later, munching on their lunches.

Kevin had a meatball hoagie with a bag of chips.

Dylan had a ham and cheese sandwich with a slice of a dill pickle.

They chatted about their past few days, as well as Kevin's last minute planning tactics for his wedding.

"Are you nervous at all for the big day?" Dylan asked after chewing his sandwich.

Kevin shrugged, "Not really. I've been waiting for the day to take my baby girl home with me."

"I bet it's exciting."

"It really is. Finally having the one person you love and to be together for the rest of your life. It's crazy."

Dylan looked down and started to frown. He always wanted that. Someone to love him as much as he would love her...he really did.

"Yeah...it is."

"Speaking of, what's with you and Sam lately?"

Dylan raised an eyebrow, "What do you mean?"

The other laughed, "You know what I mean! You two have been flirting with each other for the past two weeks! And just this morning. Something is up."

"We're just friends, Kevin."

"That's what they all say..."

"No I'm serious. We just have fun together. And she's...like a sister to me."

"A sister, huh," Kevin snorts, folding his arms together.

"Yeah, she's been there to help me out with finding a new girlfriend. We wouldn't be doing that if we liked each other."

"Oh yeah, how long has it been since you last searched for a new girlfriend?"

Dylan was about to answer until nothing came out of his mouth. When was the last time they looked for a girlfriend on tinder?

When was it?

He didn't remember.

The young man fumbled out, "I don't remember the exact day.."

"You see?"

"I haven't felt the need to look for one right now, okay? That doesn't mean I like Sam."

Suddenly, Dave poked his head through the break room door, "Your breaks off. Get out here and right to work."

"Yes, sir," they both said in unison.

Dylan and Kevin walked past the manager and stopped.

They both saw Sam was talking to a customer at the counter.

It was an attractive young man, looking to be around their age.

"Samantha, you haven't changed a bit."

"Well it's only been a year, Ben."

Ben? Who's Ben?

Dylan watched as the girl giggled at something Ben said.

A twinge of anger began to build up inside of him.

He wasn't sure why.

There wasn't anything going on between those two...right?

Kevin just stood there smirking at Dylan's expression, "Just like a sister...right," he patted his friend's shoulder and headed over to his work station.

The youtuber replayed what he said in his head.

He stared at Sam's grin as she listened to Ben talk to her.

Seeing her laugh with another guy...didn't settle right with him.

He wanted to be the guy she'd always go to for a smile.

He wanted to make her smile...all the time.

She had the most amazing smile.

Dylan sighed to himself, "Just friends, huh?"
