Dylan nodded, "Sure."
Sam smiled, "Alrighty then," she turned to her computer, "let's get the show on the road."
He still wasn't sure what he was up against.
"How are we going to do this?"
"Well..now you get to look for some people that you think you'd be interested in."
"Okay...what do I have to do?"
The girl pulled up a section on the screen he hadn't seen before.
"Basically a person is going to appear on the this middle area of the screen, you'll get to read what they're about. You can either swipe right, meaning you like what you see, or swipe left, which means you're not interested," she folded her arms, "Then you wait to see if any of the people you swiped right for a match."
"So this is just matchmaker but I'm trying to match myself with someone?"
"Exactly."
He didn't have a good feeling about this.
But he had to try.
"Okay, let's find a match."
So for a while, Dylan and Samantha sat by the computer, scanning for any likely candidates.
"Stop stop! What about that girl?"
"Uh...I don't know."
"She looks classy! It says she loves banquettes and fine dining."
Dylan pulled out his pockets, "Does it look like I'm made out of money?"
She sighed, "Fine, next."
"Not him."
"Okay...ah look at this one, Dill."
"She's 42."
"No way really?? Dang, I wanna know what moisturizer she uses!"
They both laughed together and swiped left.
...
Hours later, Dylan was still staring at the computer screen.
Nope.
Nah.
No.
None of them seemed to be right.
This was looking to be a lost cause after all.
What was he thinking?
Why did he think this would help him get over Jasmine?
Dylan moaned and leaned back on the chair, rubbing his eyelids.
Samantha came back into the room, holding two bowls of ice cream in her hands.
"I hope you like chocolate."
He looked up at her with a smile, "Who doesn't?"
The girl handed him the bowl and they ate.
Sam asked, "Any luck?"
Dylan shrugged, "Nothing."
She frowned, "I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault. I'm the one who cant find a girl to be okay with."
"Maybe it's because...you're comparing all the other girls to what she was."
The man shook his head, "That's probably it."
"Yeah."
"I'm such an idiot."
"No you're not-,"
Dylan turned his head toward her, "Yeah I am. I'm screwing everything up because of her," he pointed at Sam, "and you've given all of your spare time to me and...I've wasted it."
Samantha put her hand on his arm, "Hey, I'm not mad. This has actually been the highlight of my week."
He looked down as she continued to speak, "Look, I know you're struggling right now, but don't beat yourself up. We only just started a few hours ago. You don't have to rush it. Let it be what it is, you know?"
Dylan understood.
He was really getting worked up over something dumb, wasn't he?
The man tilted up at the girl next to him, "Yeah, you're right. Thanks, Sam."
"No problem."
He added, "Also, thank you for taking the time to help me out. You didn't have to do this."
Sam giggled, "Does it look like I have any other plans? This is fun. And besides, we're friends, right?"
Friends?
Dylan made eye contact with her.
He smiled, "Yeah, we're friends."
"See? Now, do you wanna take a break and watch something on Netflix? I heard Orange is the New Black just came out."
"Sure, but let me see what the next option is on Tinder first."
Sam rolled her eyes playfully, "Alright."
As the next one popped up, it caught Dylan's attention;
Julia McCarthy🌸
26 years old
only 40 miles from your location📍
Bio: Hey, I want a man that is a hard worker and charming. Swipe Right if you wanna be my prince. 👑
Dylan liked what he saw, "Huh."
Sam smirked, taking another spoonful of ice cream, "Is this a good one?"
"I think so!"
"Well..swipe right!"
Dylan did this and was actually feeling accomplished. This was someone he's genuinely intrigued by!
Maybe this would work after all.
Samantha smiled, "Now we wait."
Just then, a notification popped on the screen;
You and Julia McCarthy are a match!
Sam was dumb founded, "Welp that was fast."
Dylan nodded, "Yeah..it was."
...
Dylan looked at her profile again that night.
She really was pretty.
He clicked on her profile,
Tapped on 'send a message',
He began typing;
~~~
D: Hey, I see we're paired as a match :)
D: My names Dylan and I hope
to stay in touch with you.
~~~
Dylan sat there feeling regretful.
Was it too much?
Too soon?
Maybe he shouldn't have messaged her.
He laid on his bed and stared at the IPhone.
He saw a thought bubble of her face pop onto the screen;
~~~
J: Hey Dylan, it's really nice to hear from you 😊
J: I'm Julia and it'd be so great to meet up sometime🌸
~~~
Dylan sat up.
He actually grinned.
She wanted to meet up?
This was his chance.
~~~
D: Great! Do you know
where the Italian Cuisine is?
J: Ah yes I think so.
D: Would you like to meet
me there on the 19th?
J: I 'd love to💓
D: How's 7:00pm?
J: Perfect, it's a date!
~~~
A date?
He never thought he'd have one of those again.
Finally something to perk up his mood.
~~~
D: Awesome! See you then😁
J: You shall👋🌸
~~~
Dylan closed off the website and flopped back into his bed.
He had a date.
An actual date.
