July 10, 2017

Samantha walked straight out the back door after her shift.

She didn't look back.

"Sam!"

She continued walking away.

"Sam please stop!"

She didn't.

Dylan finally caught up to her.

"Sam, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you. It was unnecessary."

He grabbed her arm and she shoved it off.

"I'm sorry I got tense.. I don't know what came over me."

Sam stayed in one spot but stared down at the pavement.

Dylan stood behind her, "Please say something."

She groaned and turned around, "I don't get what happened in there...I really don't," she looked into his eyes and continued, "You and I are friends.. Why did it matter that Ben took me to work? He and I are friends too."

"He flirts with you all the time."

"Why do you care if he flirts with me?"

Dylan opened his mouth but stopped.

His heart pounded out of his chest.

This was his chance to speak his mind. To say what he was feeling. How he felt about her...

But the words never came out.

He just stood there like an idiot, watching her hurt eyes.

Sam noticed his silence and questioned it to herself.

Dylan wasn't usually one to remain quiet.

The girl sighed and eased herself, "I really hate that we're fighting over this but what if he did like me...huh? I've spent this past month helping you find ur happiness and I can't have my own?"

She stared at Dylan as he just stared right back, "I wanted to have a person to love me like you do. Don't you think it's selfish for you to stand in the way of something that I could possibly want?"

Samantha had tears in her eyes, "I don't have feelings for Ben but what makes you believe you can do things like that?"

Dylan had his lips shut.

She gave up, "Whatever."

The young woman backed away slowly from her friend and turned around, walking away from the McDonald's.

She blinked back the tears in her eyes.

The memories of her mom returned.

I need you, mom. I really need you right now..

Sam wanted to go home and never come out.

Never in a million years did she think Dylan would pick a fight with her over something so dumb..

Why did he have to do that?

She thought of the times her and Dylan hung out.

All those times he made her laugh.

All those times he made her not feel so lonely.

All those times he made her feel special.

When he wrapped his arms around her.

When he comforted her as she opened up to him.

When he smiled at her.

With that amazing smile.

She never seen a more perfect...smile.

She cared about him.

Now it was faded...

"I like you Sam!"

Her heart stopped.

Her feet halted in their place.

She turned around to see Dylan still stand where she had left him.

He yelled to her in surrender, "You're my happiness...and I want to be your happiness. Every time I saw you and Ben spend time together and hear how much fun you and Ben have...I felt like we wouldn't be as close," he lightly face palmed his head, "I can be a real screw up sometimes but please, please forgive me."

Sam walked towards him and as she came closer, she could see the pain written all over his face.

He felt terrible.

She was now inches from him, "You can be a real screw up...," she gave a sincere expression, "but no matter what I'm not leaving you, Dill Pickle."

Samantha looked down and took Dylan's hand into hers, intertwining their fingers together.

She looked up with a smile.

He smiled back and said sarcastically, "Well, I'm glad I made a real fool of myself in there."

"Haha, you really did."

"I'm a total douche bag, huh?"

"Sometimes...just sometimes."

They both laughed, their bodies slowly getting closer to each other.

The two noticed this but didn't pull away.

Their eyes locked.

The laughing stopped.

It was just silence as they stared at each other.

Their hearts beat as one.

Sam put her hand on his shoulder, moving in.

I care about him..

Dylan grew nervous as he leaned in towards her as well.

I care about her..

They leaned their heads in the McDonald's parking lot and-

"What are you two doing out here?!"

That was Dave Stevens, standing outside the McDonald's back door.

The two stopped and pulled away in that instant, their lips never touching.

Sam stuttered, yelling towards him, "We were just leaving, Dave."

The manager got the message and headed back inside the building.

Dylan and Sam looked at one another for a moment, an airy silence now between them.

The girl put her hands to her sides, "How about we talk later?"

The other nodded, "Sounds good."

Then the two headed their separate ways, leaving more confused than they once were.
