Chapter Twenty Two: Hungry (Part Two)
I had to distance myself from Cass, not because I wanted to, but because with everything that was going on, the way that I was acting when I was around him was not natural. It was like I couldn't even stand in a room with him without wanting him in every sexual way possible, and that was not me.
There had been more deaths, all weird and all suicides and none having the Cupid mark, which ruled Cupid and love out. Sam had just gotten back from the coroners with a briefcase, which he explained that he'd seen a demon carrying it.
So, I mean, of course we were going to open it.
"What the Hell does a demon got to do with this, anyway?" Dean asked confused, to which I just shrugged and Sam sighed.
"Believe me, I got no idea." he said. He seemed almost on edge, so I put a hand on his back for comfort.
"You okay?" Dean asked, noticing it as well.
"Yeah, yeah. I'll be all right." Sam said and nodded. Dean and I glanced at each other, obviously not believing him, but neither of us pressed on it as we turned our attention back to the case.
"Let's crack her open. What's the worst that could happen, right?" Dean asked and I frowned.
"That is the last thing you want to say in a horror movie." I pointed out and he rolled his eyes before we crouched down to put in the lock password and pop open the case. As soon as it did, a bright-almost blinding light appeared and I almost instantly recognized it. While they shielded their eyes, I stared directly at it until it calmed down enough for them to look at it.
"What the Hell was that?" Dean asked.
"It's a human soul." We heard a familiar voice behind us and turned to see Cass. I immediately felt that urge once more and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't help but move closer to him, taking time to notice the fast food bag in his hands. Dean and Sam both grabbed one of my arms each to stop me, but my feet kept trying to move. "It's starting to make sense." he said and took a bite out of his burger.
"Now, what about that makes sense?" Sam asked, not letting go of me or even loosening his grip.
"And when did you start eating?" Dean added.
"Let me be that sandwich." I mumbled, staring at him.
"And why is she acting like a prostitute?"
"Excuse me?" I looked at my brother, offended.
"Exactly." Cass said and I looked at him.
"Excuse me?" I asked again, even more offended.
"No, not that." he said to me. "My hunger, her hormones--it's a clue, actually." Cass replied to the boys.
"For what?" they asked in unison, but I felt that urge again and as they had loosened their grips, I was able to slip out of their grasps and get to Cass, kissing his neck while he continued to explain to the boys, basically ignoring me.
"This town is not suffering from some love-gone-wrong effect. It's suffering from hunger. Starvation, to be exact." Cass said, walking up to the boys while I followed, now kissing the back of his neck, up to his ear. If I wasn't under this spell thing, then I might've been able to figure out that he meant famine before he said it. "Specifically... Famine." he said and I paused for a moment before continuing my kisses, nibbling on his ear a little bit and wondering how he could just carry on like nothing was happening. Probably because he knew I wasn't just doing this out of my own free will?
Although, I probably would...
No! Bad Rhett!
"Famine?" Sam repeated as if to make sure he'd heard him right. Cass nodded, still chewing his burger bite. "A-as in the horseman?"
"Great." Dean said sarcastically and grimaced at me. "Henry, can you please stop for one moment?" he asked and I pouted, but pulled away just to rest my chin on his shoulder.
"I thought famine meant starvation, like as in, you know, food." Sam tried to understand.
"Yes. Absolutely." Cass confirmed and glanced at me. "But not just food. I mean, everyone seems to be starving for something. Sex, attention, drugs, love..."
"You." I whispered in his ear with a smirk and this time I felt him shiver slightly, which made me even happier.
"Well, that explains the puppy-lovers that Cupid shot up, and prostitute here." Dean said and I glared.
"I am not a prostitute. I want all of Cass, not just that, thank you very much." I said and Cass just waited before nodding.
"Right. The cherub made them crave love, and then Famine came and made them rabid for it." Cass explained the couple and took another bite of his burger.
"Does that mean I could die if I slept with you?" I asked, trailing my fingers up his arm.
"Let's not try it, all right?" Sam cut in and I frowned.
"Okay, but what about you? I mean, since when do angels secretly hunger for white castle?" Dean asked, moving closer and seeming grateful for what Sam had said.
"It's my vessel, Jimmy. His, uh, appetite for red meat has been touched by Famine's effect." Cass said and turned away to finish his burger as I moved to be back in front of him, taking the bag from his hand and setting it on the table before turning back and taking his now free hand in mine as I leaned up and kissed his cheek.
"So, Famine just rolls into town and everybody goes crazy?" Dean asked as Cass swallowed his bite. I used my free hand to stroke his cheek before running it into his nicely messy hair as he looked away from me.
"And then will come Famine riding on a black steed. He will ride into the land of plenty... And great will be the horseman's hunger, for he is hunger. His hunger will seep out and poison the air." Cass quoted, to which I frowned. "Famine's hungry. He must devour the souls of his victims." Cass explained.
"So, that's what was in the briefcase--the twinkie dude's soul?" Dean asked, looking back at the case before at Cass, who looked at him and nodded.
"Lucifer has sent his demons to care for Famine, to feed him, make certain he'll be ready." Cass stated as I turned his head to face me, pressing my lips to his, and he kissed back for a split second before turning his head a bit, but that didn't stop me, did it? God, even knowing it wasn't me, it was still weird.
"Ready for what?" Sam asked, trying not to cringe at me as Cass gently moved me away, but still held my hand, turning his full attention back to the boys.
"To march across the land." Cass said and let go of my hand to grab his fast food bag, sit down on the edge of the bed and eat another hamburger. I frowned a little bit and crawled onto the bed behind him, wrapping my arms around him as I kissed his neck.
"Okay, Henry, can you not?" Dean asked, looking at me and I glanced up at him.
"What? As long as I don't screw him I'll survive." I said, bored, and Cass turned to kiss my cheek. Sam scoffed and walked into the bathroom to do whatever as I turned and kissed Cass correctly, but after a moment of kissing back, he turned his head to continue his hamburger. Dean shook his head and got back on topic as he walked around the room.
"Famine?" he asked Cass, trying to make sure he had it right, and Cass, with a mouthful of hamburger, looked up at him nodding.
"Yes." he replied, slightly muffled because of the food.
"So, what? This whole town is just gonna eat, drink, and screw itself to death?" Sam asked and Cass made a meh face.
"We should stop it." he said as I trailed my hands down his chest, but he gently pushed my hands away to prevent them from going lower. I knew he was trying to help me, but on the outside I was pouting. I wasn't even myself right now...
"Aye, that's a great idea. How?" Dean asked as if Cass had said the most obvious thing ever, which he kind of did, but I was too interested in attempting to get in his pants than pay attention right now. I wanted to slap myself in the face.
"How did you stop the last horseman you met?" Cass asked and Dean seemed to think for a minute, but I remembered immediately.
"Cut off his ring." I said, glancing at Dean before going back to kissing Cass wherever I could.
"Yeah," Dean turned and got the ring from his jacket pocket, "War got his mojo from this ring. And after we cut it off, he just tucked tail and ran. And everybody that was affected, i-it was like they-they woke up out of a dream." Dean explained with more detail and I snapped finger guns at him, resting my chin on Cass' shoulder as I at least tried not to be a total whore. "You think Famine's got a class ring, too?"
"I know he does." Cass answered, almost grimly as he looked down, realizing his hamburger was gone before looking in his bag.
"Well, okay. Let's-Let's track him down and get to chopping." Dean said.
"Yeah." Cass mumbled, tilting the bag around as he searched for a burger. He then stood up and began to reach in it and I rolled my eyes, standing and plucking the bag from his hands. He looked at me, confused.
"You've been cut off." I said and looked in. There were still hamburgers left.
"Yeah, I mean, come on dude. What are you, the Hamburglar?" Dean asked, agreeing with me, which made me smile a little.
"I've developed a taste for ground beef." Cass said, trying to snatch the bag back, but I moved it away too fast.
"Too slow, Cassie." I teased with a grin.
"Well, have you even tried to stop it?" Dean asked Cass and I hid the bag behind my back as Cass looked at me like I was being childish.
"I'm an angel. I can stop anytime I want." he said and tried to reach around me, but I somehow kept it away from him. He then stared at me for a long moment before leaning in and kissing me. I smirked and kissed back instantly, leaning into the kiss as he wrapped his arms around my waist, getting a grip on his bag before pulling away with it in his hand. I rolled my eyes and let him keep it as I sat on the edge of the bed, annoyed.
"Sam, let's roll." Dean called into the bathroom to Sam and I tried to look in to see what was going on as I heard Sam panting.
"Guys..." He breathed out and I stood up worriedly. "I, um... I can't." he said and walked back into the room with us. "I can't go." he said. I walked up to him and pressed my hand to his forehead, he felt normal, but something was obviously wrong. The only thing I could think was Famine.
"What do you mean?" Dean asked, confused. Dean might be a good father figure, but he was not well in the motherly sense at all. That's where I always came in all throughout childhood. Dean and I would take care of Sammy while taking care of each other.
"I think it got to me. I think I'm hungry for it..." he said and I frowned, knowing almost instantly what "it" was.
"Hungry for what?" Dean asked, still not getting it.
"You know." Sam said as he shifted uncomfortably, not wanting to have to say it out loud.
"Demon blood?" Dean asked and Sam just looked down. "You got to be kidding me." Dean turned to Cass, as did I, while hugging Sam a little bit, to which he hugged back. "You got to get him out of here. You got to beam him to, like, Montana. Anywhere but here."
"It won't work, he's already infected. The hunger is just gonna travel with him." Cass explained, looking slightly remorseful.
"Then what do we do?" I asked, frowning as Sam grunted from beside me, something bad was happening and I didn't like it.
"You go cut that Bastard's finger off." Sam answered, looking at us both, and I nodded.
"Okay, Sammy, we will." I said softly. Sometimes-just sometimes-I treated him like I was five, he was three, and Dean was seven again. Dean looked at Cass and shrugged.
"You heard them." he said to Cass and I let go of Sam to move closer to them, wanting to just get it over with.
"But, guys..." we both turned back to Sam. "Before you go, you better..." he let out a sharp breath. "...You better lock me down. But good."
~
So, we had handcuffed Sam to the sink and locked the door, and for extra precaution, Cass pushed a big ass dresser thing in front of the door, somehow with one arm, which I found hot, but at the moment I was finding everything Cass did hot.
Right now, we were back at the coroners. Dean told me it might have been better to stay there to watch Sammy, but I didn't see a point at how well we'd locked him up, he wasn't getting out. I told him I'd behave myself and wouldn't kiss Cass in front of people, and he let me come with.
"Hey, Marty." Dean greeted one of the doctors in the place with a small smile as I held onto Cass' hand, only just barely holding myself back from kissing him; it was difficult. "Is Dr. Corman around?" he asked, referring to the slightly funny doctor we'd met a couple times before as we walked up to, apparently, Marty.
"You haven't heard?" he asked, seeming slightly upset, but he hid it well. I glanced at my boys, a little confused.
"Heard what?" Dean asked, just as confused as I was.
Marty lead us to a room where he unveiled a dead Dr. Corman and I frowned. He was funny, I didn't want him dead. I mean, I didn't want anyone dead, but a little more so him.
"Guy's been dry for the last twenty years. But this morning, he left work, went home, and drank himself to death." Marty explained, seeming sad and confused as to why Dr. Corman would even do such a thing.
"It's Famine." Cass said and I looked at him with slightly wide eyes as did Dean.
What are you trying to accomplish by telling him this?
"Pardon?" Marty asked, confused as to what Cass meant.
"Would you give us a minute, please?" Dean asked, staying cool, and Marty nodded.
"Sure." he said quietly.
"Thanks." Dean said and I looked at Cass as Marty left the room, feeling a strong urge to kiss him, but not giving into it. Stupid Famine. Dean gave Cass a look like 'You idiot' and walked around the body. "Crap." he muttered. "I really kind of liked this guy." he said as he looked at him and I moved closer to Cass, brushing my arm against his when Dean wasn't paying attention. Cass put his hand on the guy's stomach and did something before looking at us.
"They haven't harvested his soul yet." he informed us and I concentrated very hard, looking at the guy to see his soul. It was so bright...
But what was weird was when I looked back at Cass, I saw large dark blue, almost black wings extruding from his back and jumped, having never seen that before or anything like it. I closed my eyes and opened them again and he was totally normal again. He gave me a strange look and I tried to shake it off and focus on the case, looking back at Dr. Corman's corpse.
"Well, if we want to play "Follow the soul" to get to Famine, our best shot starts with the Doc, here." Dean said, not having noticed what just happened.
So we came up with a plan and Cass had left as me and Dean were in the car waiting for him to show up as I laid in the back, staring at the ceiling of the car.
"Hey, Dean. Do you ever wonder what Cass' wings look like?" I asked and he glanced back at me.
"Not really.. Why?" he asked and I looked at him.
"I'm pretty sure I saw them." I said quietly and his eyes widened.
"You-" before he finished his sentence, the angel zapped beside him in the front seat and I sat up immediately, holding myself back from kissing him as I shook my head. I noticed he had another bag of burgers in his hands and I gave him a look of almost disappointment before glancing at Dean.
"Are you serious?" Dean asked in disbelief and I snorted a laugh as I looked at Cass. He was opening a hamburger and quickly took a bite from it, making noises of pleasure which I rolled my eyes over, mainly because the part of me that was infected by Famine was wanting to be that burger.
"These make me... very happy." he said, chuckling softly and I looked at him, snatching a burger from his bag and going to eat it, getting one bite before he snatched it back, causing me to jump slightly at the sudden movement. Dean rolled his eyes and looked back out of the window, back to his stakeout as Cass kept eating and I kept resisting my stupid urges.
"How many is that?" Dean asked, looking back at him.
"I lost count. It's in the low hundreds." Cass said like it was normal and my eyes widened as Dean whistled and looked back out of the window again.
"How have you not... exploded?" I asked and he glanced at me.
"I'm an angel, Rhett." he answered vaguely, using my nickname which also shocked me.
"Are you sure you're Cass?" I asked, raising an eyebrow before shaking my head, knowing he wouldn't get the joke. "Don't answer that."
"What I don't understand is... Where is your hunger, Dean?" Cass asked and I turned my attention to Dean. I hadn't even realized that he hadn't had any hunger, for anything. He didn't want sex on Valentine's day and he hasn't really wanted to eat recently.
"Dean hungers for death." I joked. "We're all dead inside." I added and Dean rolled his eyes at me.
"What do you mean, Cass?" he asked, ignoring me as much as he could.
"Well, slowly, but surely, everyone in this town is falling prey to Famine, but so far you seem unaffected." Cass explained with mouth fulls of food and I slowly leaned closer, barely even realizing it myself, and when I did, I pulled back, feeling my heart beating in my chest.
"Hey, when I want to drink, I drink. When I want sex, I go get it. Same goes for a sandwich or a fight." Dean shrugged, not getting it as I rested my chin on the seat, listening.
"So... You're saying you're just well-adjusted?" Cass asked, not buying it.
"God, no. I'm just well-fed." Dean said with a small smile and Cass seemed to shrug it off before looking out of the window.
"There." he pointed out and Dean and I turned to see what he was looking at. There was a man, most likely a demon, walking out of the coroners with a briefcase, similar to the one with the soul in it. He put it in a black SUV and Dean started the car so that we could follow him. I looked at Cass.
"I can't even have one hamburger?" I asked and he shook his head, pulling the bag closer to him, to which I frowned.
"You can have a kiss." he said and turned to peck my lips before turning back to the other stuff and I felt my heart and everything about my body go crazy as I smiled.
"I'll take it." I said quietly before gasping and pulling back as an image came into my mind. It was... Sam... I couldn't see what was going on, just him on top of someone and I frowned as it soon left. "Dean, we locked Sam up pretty good, right?" I asked as he drove after the SUV, glancing back at me in the rear view mirror.
"Yeah.. Why?" he asked and I shook my head, trying to brush the image off.
"No reason."
We had followed the demon to find him meeting up with even more demons for whatever was going on.
"Demons." I heard Dean from the front seat and glanced at him before returning my attention back to the demons as they walked inside. "You want to go over the plan again?" Dean asked both me and Cass and I nodded as he looked over his shoulder at us.
"Yeah, Cass?" I asked him, but he was more interested in feeling his stupid tin foil.
"Hey, Happy Meal." Dean said, raising his voice slightly and Cass jumped, looking back at us both as he put his foil down. "The plan."
"I take the knife, I go in, I cut off the ring hand of Famine, and I meet you back here in the parking lot." Castiel replied. It was the dumbest plan I'd ever heard, but I guess we were going with it.
"Well, that sounds full proof."
"I can come with you." I spoke up and he looked at me.
"No." he said simply, again, not trusting me enough to not get killed.
"Cass, I can help-" before I could even finish my sentence, he was gone and most likely inside the place now. I rolled my eyes with a sigh as I looked at Dean, who shrugged before looking out of the window. It wasn't even a minute later that he looked back at me.
"This is taking too long." he said, grabbing his gun and opening the door. I grinned and got out with him, following him into the fast food place.
We snuck in through the black. The entire building was dark and had an eery feeling to it, as well as a sickening scent. I could hear faint bubbling as we turned a corner and my eyes widened as we saw a guy with his entire upper half dumped into the fryer. I grimaced a little and looked around for something else. Dean and I both looked over a bar, where we could see our trench coated friend, my soul mate, huddled over something.
"Castiel?" I asked softly to try and get his attention, but I couldn't help but feel something draw me to him. I didn't even bother to look back at Dean as I practically jumped over the counter and to him. He was eating raw meat, which was undeniably disgusting, but I ignored it as I crouched beside him, kissing his neck and cheek and basically anywhere I could kiss without getting raw meat on my lips (although, maybe if I had gotten the raw meat on my lips he would've kissed back).
I didn't even notice the demons that had walked in, and payed no mind to Dean getting his ass beat until the demons pulled him into the room with us, and I glanced up for a split second as he said our names, noticing Famine as well. He was an old man in a wheelchair with tubes going through his nose, he certainly looked like he, himself was starving. I soon went back to kissing my soul mate. I could still hear the conversation, I still wanted to fight; it was just too difficult at this point.
"The other Mr. Winchester." I heard Famine, but again didn't care to intervene as I instead pulled off Cass' tie, kissing his neck.
"What did you do to them?" Dean asked, slightly worried.
"You sicced your dog on me. I just threw him a steak. And she can't seem to get enough of him." Famine spoke. I knew he was talking about Cass and I. I began unbuttoning his shirt. He didn't seem to care. The only thing he wanted was his stupid meat.
"So this is your big trick? Huh? Making people cuckoo for cocoa puffs?" Dean asked angrily.
"Doesn't take much. Hardly a push. Oh, America. All-you-can-eat, all the time. Consume., consume. A swarm of locusts in stretch pants. And yet, you're all still starving because hunger doesn't just come from the body, it also comes from the soul." Famine replied, a slightly monologue answer if you asked me.
I moved in front of Cass, but he stayed focused on his meat as I kissed his neck, down his collarbone, getting to the last button with a smirk.
"It's funny, it doesn't seem to be coming from mine." Dean said.
"Yes. I noticed that. Have you wondered why that is? How you could even walk in my presence?" Famine asked, seeming as if he already knew the answer while Dean didn't have a clue. I ran my hands down Cass' chest, smiling.
"Well, I like to think it's because of my strength of character." Dean joked.
"I disagree." Famine breathed out and the next thing I knew, I heard the whirring of his wheelchair as he wheeled closer to Dean. I heard Dean grunt, but didn't look up from touching Cass, moving my hands lower until they were resting on his belt, and for the first time, he looked me in the eye. But it wasn't a loving look; not a pleasant look at all. He gave me a look as if warning me not to go lower.
"Oh, come on, Cassie. You know we both want this." I whispered in his ear and he shook his head, continuing to eat his raw meat.
"No, Rhett." he finally mumbled with a mouth full of food, turning me around to look at Dean and my eyes widened. I heard Famine let out a slightly terrifying chuckle.
"That's one deep, dark nothing you got there, Dean. Can't fill it, can you. Not with food or drink. Not even with sex." Famine spoke and I felt something within me... break. I glanced at Cass before pulling away, standing slowly while the demons and Famine were distracted.
"Oh, you're so full of crap." Dean breathed out as I reached into Cass' pocket, pulling out his angel blade.
"Oh, you can smirk and joke and lie to your brother and sister, lie to yourself, but not to me!" Famine exclaimed. At this point, I'd stopped caring about what Famine was saying. Sure, it might worry me about Dean, but we had bigger fish to fry at the moment.
I walked behind a demon and stabbed the blade into his back. He lit up and let out a scream, catching Famine and Dean's attention, along with the other demons, who came at me. I pulled the blade from his back and stabbed it into another one while kicking my leg out to trip a third. In the blink of an eye, a sharp blade was pressed against my neck as a demon held me from behind, meaning I couldn't move. I instantly dropped Cass' blade, holding my hands up in surrender. I stood there and looked at Dean, who looked worried.
"That took even me by surprise, I'll admit.. Anomaly." Famine said and I furrowed my eyebrows at what he had called me. He didn't have time to say anything else, though, as we heard a familiar voice and turned our attention to it.
"Let them go." Sam said and I looked at him, relieved for a moment before I noticed the blood around his mouth. Famine slowly turned his wheelchair to look at him.
"Sam..." he breathed out, almost happily.
"Sammy, no!" Dean exclaimed and I frowned. It was like I'd envisioned. Oh, God, why didn't I go with my gut! When have my visions ever not been right? At this point, one demon was holding me, two were dead on the ground, and there were two left. One was holding Dean, and the other began advancing towards Sam.
"Stop!" Famine shouted at it. "No one lays a finger on this sweet little boy." he added and I grimaced at the sentence. "Sam, I see you got the snack I sent you." he said and I glared.
"You ass-" I started, but the demons grip on me tightened as the blade pressed more on the skin on my neck.
"You sent?" Sam asked after looking at me for a moment. He looked absolutely terrifying.
"Don't worry, you're not like everyone else. You'll never die from drinking too much. You're the exception that proves the rule. Just the way... Satan wanted you to be." Famine explained. I bit my lip so I wouldn't say anything else stupid and just glared at the old man. "So..." Famine lifted his skinny pale arms into the air. "Cut their throats!" he exclaimed, referring to the demons. "Have at them!"
"Sammy, no!" Dean shouted again, not wanting Sam to go down this road again. We'd have to put him in Bobby's panic room again anyways...
"Please, be my guest!" Famine shouted.
"Sam, you don't have to." I tried, this time, the demon didn't try to stop me. He obviously didn't want to die. Sam breathed heavily for a moment, looking around before he lifted his hand and the demon let go of me. I glanced at Dean for a split second before sprinting as fast as I could to Sam to stop him, but I wasn't fast enough. The demons were already being exorcised. Dean grabbed my arm and held me close, looking around worriedly.
"No." Sam said as the vessels fell to the ground, the demons now gone.
"Well... Fine. If you don't want them... Then I'll have them." Famine said, then gasped as his body sort of jerked forward. I watched in horror as the demons came back from below, flying directly into his jaws. I glanced at Sam and Dean in a sort of terror before looking back at Famine. He finished quickly, returning back to his normal position in his little wheelchair.
"All right, Davros, Jesus." I muttered. Sam took a few steps forward, holding his hand up as if to kill Famine, but nothing happened. I looked at his hand with the ring, and snatched the demon knife from Dean, who had equipped it while Sam had been exorcising the demons.
"I'm a horseman, Sam. Your power doesn't work on me." Famine said, cockily.
"You're right." Sam replied. "But it will work on them." he added and seemed to be focusing extremely hard as black smoke began escaping Famine from any kind of exit possible, inevitably killing Famine. Sam's nose had begun bleeding, so as my motherly instincts kicked in, I walked over to him and grabbed a napkin from the tables in the little restaurant to wipe his nose with before moving back over to Famine. Cass had stopped eating, his buttons still undone and trench coat off. He wiped his mouth and looked at us in shock, so I mouthed an apology to him.
I looked at Famine one last time after Dean took his ring from his finger and leaned down just enough to punch him in the face.
"Asshole."
~
We had Sam back in the Panic room on lock down and Dean wouldn't even let me downstairs, but it didn't matter. Even upstairs I could hear Sam's screams for help. I laid on the couch, a beer in hand. Dean had walked upstairs a while ago and gone outside, so now I was alone. I heard a light flap of wings and sighed, knowing I'd have to face him eventually, but I didn't want it to be now.
"Rhett-"
"He called me an anomaly." I muttered, cutting him off before he could say anything else. I heard his footsteps before he was standing directly behind the couch and looking at me.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"Famine called me an anomaly." for some reason, I couldn't get it out of my mind. "And I broke his control." I said and looked at him, biting my lip worriedly before I spoke again.
"Is something wrong with me?"
