Chapter Twenty Seven: Gabriel and Gods
We had been out on cases since Adam, trying to look for leads while also saving people, to no avail. I hadn't gotten much sleep, afraid for Cass, and afraid of Lucifer and the visions I was seeing. I had told Dean about the visions, and Lucifer coming to me in dreams, and even about the times I could find him while awake if I concentrated, and I'd confided in him about how much it frightened me, begging him not to tell Sam. I was Sam's big sister, I never wanted him worried about me. In the past week alone, I'd gotten maybe three or four hours of sleep at most because of the fear. Sam was having troubles too, but I wasn't quite sure why.
Either way, we were currently out looking for a case when a crazy tropical storm hit and we were forced into a motel nearby. It was a nice, fancy place for once, but something was off, especially with the receptionist. Now I may be weird, but he was downright strange, and pointed out a shaving nick on Dean's jaw that neither I nor Sam had noticed before. After we got the key to our room, we went out to what looked like an all you can eat buffet, Dean was starving, but Sam and I, not so much. I could just feel something was... Wrong, with this place. Dean kept telling us to relax, eat some food, and get some rest, bringing up the fact that Bobby's looking and we've looked almost everywhere we can.
"We're gonna find a way to beat the devil, okay? Soon, I can feel it. We're gonna find Cass, and find Adam, but neither of you are any good to me burnt out," he said and I nodded. He wasn't wrong, but how could I be sure that the next time I slept, I wouldn't be in the grasps of the literal prince of darkness...
Afterwards, we made our way to our room, and Dean got distracted by a couple making out. Inside the room, it was incredible. Huge, two king sized beds and chocolates and many other luxuries that we didn't get with most-if not all-rooms we stayed in, including porn. It was like Dean's heaven. Sam brought up the point that the hotel was so good, yet it was literally in the middle of nowhere, before we heard the couple in the room next to ours having quite a bit of fun. Then, the wall literally busted in from all the "fun" they were having, causing us to run out of our room to get a look.
There was no one there, as if nothing had happened, other than a single wedding ring on the floor. We went to the front desk, where the strange receptionist was and asked him about it. He said, in quite possibly the creepiest way ever, that the two had checked out. When Dean presented the ring, he said that he'd put it in lost and found, and then we left, noting just how creepy the encounter was. Dean decided we were going to split up and scope the place while Sam was to keep an eye on the creepy receptionist, very unhappy about his one night off being ruined.
As I was walking around, I couldn't help but notice some awfully strange things about the place in general. I ended up spying through the kitchen doors, seeing pots and pans and ovens full of types of food I'd never seen before. And I could've swore, I saw a whole... Human arm. That was until I felt a prick on my neck and winced, putting my hand over it. When I pulled back, there was blood on my fingers, confusing me more than the kitchen. I shook it off and looked back in the kitchen, but the arm was gone.
I met back up with my brothers. Dean told us he had seen a whole elephant in a room. When I told them about the arm, Dean gagged, having eaten some of the food here. We made our way back to the lobby to find that no one was in there. Sam tried the door, but the stupid thing was locked.
"I knew we should've left. Did we not try to tell you, Dean?" I asked, sighing, "If I get killed by an elephant, I am so gonna haunt your ass."
"Think about how we got here," Sam spoke, "That detour on I-90? The friggin' hurricane?"
"You saying we were led here?" Dean questioned.
"Like rats in a maze," Sam answered.
"Isn't that just dandy, now," I sighed, looking around to make sure we weren't going to be ambushed.
After that, the boys followed me to the kitchen and we walked in as there was no one in there. While walking around, Dean found a pot of boiling red stuff.
"Please be tomato soup. Please be tomato soup," he said to himself, lifting the ladle to see two eyeballs, and dropped the ladle with another gag, "Motel Hell."
Sam walked towards the freezer, putting his face to the window as if to see what was in there, and a hand hit the window. People showed up, pleading for us to let them out and Sam tried, pulling on the handle before pulling out his pocket pick locking case thing.
"Hurry up!" Dean shouted.
"I'm going as fast as I-" Sam looked up at us and stopped, "As fast as I can."
"There's someone behind us, isn't there?" I asked, sighing before turning around. As expected, there were three people, one for each of us. They pulled us into a room where other people are, and everyone had name tags with different... Mythological God names. Oh, crap.
"Something tells me this isn't a Shriner convention," Dean said as the receptionist rolled out a tray.
"Dinner is served," he said with a smile, unveiling the "food" to show a dead mans head. Everyone clapped at it until a spotlight was shined on us.
"Ladies and gentlemen... Our guests of honor have arrived," a man with the name tag Baldur spoke. We stood there and I looked to my brothers in fear. Everyone took a seat and the "people" that had dragged us in here pushed us into seats as well. Baldur stood up and clinked a glass of wine with a fork, "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming. Well in all my centuries, I never thought I'd see this-this many Gods under one roof."
"Gods?" Sam whispered to me and Dean and I nodded, looking at him with fear clear on my face.
"Now, before we get down to brass tacks, some ground rules-no slaughtering each other, curb your wrath. Oh, and, uh, keep your hands off the local virgins. We're trying to keep a low profile here," Baldur continued.
"Oh, we are so, so screwed," Sam said and I simply nodded.
"Now, we all know why we're here. The Judeo-Christian apocalypse looms over us. I know we've all had our little disagreements in the past, but the time has come to put those aside and look toward the future. 'Cause if we don't, we won't have one. Now, we do have three very valuable bargaining chips," he pointed at us, "Michael and Lucifer's vessels, and the abomination."
"Excuse me, who do you think you're calling an abomination?" I asked, glaring at him. God, Shmod, nobody calls me that but my family. He rolled his eyes and with the flick of his wrist, my mouth was closed and I wasn't able to open it, "Now, the question is, what do we do now? Anybody have any bright ideas? Speak up. This is a safe room."
An Asian guy with the name tag too far away and too small for me to read stood and began yelling in what sounded like Mandarin.
"Oh, I don't like his tone," Dean said and I looked at him, wanting to say something.
"Kill them? Why? So the angels here can bring them back again?" another God spoke.
"I don't know what everybody's getting so worked up about. This is just a couple of angels having a slap fight. It's no Armageddon. Everybody knows when the world comes to an end, the great serpent Jormungandr rises up, and I, myself, will be eaten by a big wolf," Odin said with a laugh. The Asian God sighed and began speaking some more, but obviously my brothers and I couldn't understand him, "Oh, yeah? And why is that? Because your beliefs are so much more realistic? The whole world's getting carried around on the back of a giant turtle," Odin scoffed, "Give me a break," the Asian God continued speaking, seemingly not happy with Odin's words, "What are you going to do about it?" Odin questioned, standing from his seat as the God continued to speak to him, "You watch your mouth when you're talking to me, boy!" Asian God argued something, "No one's ever proved that."
As they were arguing my brothers and I began to stand up, turning around to leave the room. Just as we started walking towards the door, a chandelier fell right in front of us, drawing everyone's attention to us.
"Stay," I heard a females voice, and turned around to look at her with an awkward smile, pointing to my lips. She sighed and flicked her wrist, and I was able to speak again.
"We just needed to use the little girls and boys rooms," I smiled at her. She rolled her eyes and flicked her wrist again, and my lips were sealed once again, much to my demise.
"We need to fight," she spoke to the rest of the God's after a moment of silence, "The archangels-the only thing they understand is violence. This ends in blood. There is no other way. It's them... Or us."
"With all due respect... Ma'am... We haven't even tried talking to them," the creepy receptionist said after raising his hand. A moment after his obligation, he began choking on nothing and grabbed at his bow tie, holding his other hand out to the God who's name tag said Kali as if asking for mercy as blood began to come out of his mouth.
"Kali," Baldur stepped in and the choking stopped.
"Who asked you?" Kali asked.
As if on cue, the doors behind us bursted open and a very familiar voice was heard.
"Can't we just all get along?" I turned to see the archangel Gabriel. I tried to say his name, smiling a bit, but then remembered that my lips were sealed tight. Sam tried secondly.
"Gab-" Gabriel flicked his wrist and both my brothers suddenly lost their voices. Gabriel clicked his tongue at the three of us.
"Sam. Dean. Rhett. It's always wrong place, worst time with you muttonheads, huh?" he asked, walking towards us and looking between my brothers and me, winking at me.
"Loki."
"Baldur," Gabriel said with a smile, walking past us, "Good seeing you, too. I guess my invitation got lost in the mail."
"Why are you here?" Baldur asked with venom in his words.
"To talk about the elephant in the room," Gabriel answered, and the one God that Dean had said turned into an elephant began to stand up to object, "Not... you," Gabriel said, turning to look at him as he sat back down, "The apocalypse," he looked back at the rest of the Gods, "We can't stop it, gang. But first things first," he held up his index finger and turned on his heel to me and my brothers, "The adults need to have a little conversation. Check you later."
And with a snap of his fingers, we were gone, back in our room. I looked at my brothers as my mouth was finally unsealed and they could talk again.
"Okay... What the Hell?" I asked, entirely shocked.
"Did that... Holy crap," Dean added, just as confused as me and Sam.
"Yeah, tell me about it. By the way, the next time we say "let's keep driving," uh, let's keep driving," Sam finally spoke, exasperated.
"Okay, yeah, next time," Dean said with annoyance in his voice as I looked around.
"Uh, all right, so, what's our next move?" Sam asked, rubbing his face.
"I say we get those people out of the freezer and get a move on," I said, raising my hand.
"Gank a few freaks on the way if we're lucky," Dean added.
"And when are you ever lucky?" we heard and turned to see Gabriel relaxing on the couch behind us.
"Bite me, Gabriel," I growled, to which he purred.
"Maybe later, babe."
"I should have known. I mean, this had your stink all over it from the jump," Dean sneered.
"You think I'm behind this?" Gabriel asked, standing up, "Please. I'm the Costner to your Houston. I'm here to save your ass."
"You want to pull us out of the fire?" Dean asked, gesturing to all of us.
"Bingo," Gabriel said as if it were obvious, "Those Gods are either going to dust you or use you as bait. Either way, you're uber-boned."
"Wow, 'cause a couple of months ago, you were telling us that we need to play our roles. You were uber-boning us."
"Ohhhh, the end is still nigh. Michael and Lucifer are gonna dance the Lambada," he spoke, walking past us and turning once he passed me, "But not tonight. Not here."
"Why do you care?" I asked, raising an eyebrow, and he looked at me with what looked like... Embarrassment?
"I don't care," he was obviously lying as he looked away from me, "But... Me and Kali, we, uh... Had a thing. Chick was all hands," he bounced his eyebrows as he spoke and I rolled my eyes, "What can I say? I'm sentimental."
"Do they have a chance?" Sam asked, walking forward, "Against Satan?"
"Really, Sam?" Dean asked, but I thought it was a good idea. They didn't want the world to end just like we didn't and they seemed to have a better chance than we would alone. Plus, I knew I didn't want to face that man-that thing alone any time soon.
"You got a better idea?" I snapped at Dean, who held his hands up in defeat.
"It's a bad idea," Gabriel answered, "Lucifer's gonna turn them into finger paint. So, let's get going while the going's good."
"Okay, great. Why don't you just zap us out of here, then?" Dean questioned.
"Would if I could, but Kali's got you by the short and curlies," I cringed at his wording, "It's a blood spell. You guys are on a leash."
"What does that mean?"
"Means it's time for a little of the old black magic," he answered Dean, pulling out breath spray from his pocket and spraying some in his mouth.
"Okay. Yeah. Well, whatever. We're gonna take the hors d'oeurves in the freezer with us," Dean said.
"Forget it. It's gonna be hard enough sneaking you mooks out of here."
"They called you Loki, right?" Dean asked and I caught on to what he was saying, smirking.
"Which means they don't really know who you are?" I questioned.
"Told you, I'm in witness protection."
"Okay, well, then how about you do what we say, or we tell the, uh, legion of doom about your secret identity," Dean threatened, walking forward, "They don't seem like a real pro-angel kind of crowd."
"I'll take your voices away," Gabriel threatened, anger and annoyance clear on his face, but I could do better.
"We'll write it down."
"I'll cut off your hands."
"Then people are gonna be asking, "Why are you guys running around with no hands?" I said, staring him dead in the face. He glared at me before smiling a little bit.
"Fine."
~
Gabriel was going to try and get the blood off of Kali while my brothers and I went to get the people in the freezer. On our way, we watched one guy get dragged out and slaughtered, making me flinch, before we continued on our way.
When we got to the freezer, we got ambushed by Gods. Dean killed one before the others grabbed us and pulled us right back to the room that we had been in, where Gabriel was now being held prisoner.
"How long have you known?" he asked Kali, who I'm guessing now knew his true identities.
"Long enough," she answered as we were pushed back down into chairs.
"Good going Gabie baby," I said sarcastically and he looked over at me with that "I will smite you" look, to which I simply smiled.
"Well, surprise, surprise. The trickster has tricked us," Kali said, looking at Gabriel with such a look of hatred.
"Kali... Don't," Gabriel begged.
"You're mine now," Kali said, sitting on his lap, "And you have something I want," she said, stroking her hand down his chest and reaching into his jacket, pulling out his angel blade, "An archangel's blade. From the archangel... Gabriel," she finally got off of his lap, backing up.
"Okay! Okay! So, I got wings. Like Kotex. But that doesn't make me any less right about Lucifer," Gabriel exclaimed.
"He's lying. He's a spy," Kali said.
"I'm not a spy, I'm a runaway. I'm trying to save you," he leaned forward in his seat, "I know my brother, Kali. He should scare the living crap out of you. You can't beat him. I've skipped ahead-seen how this story ends."
"Your story-not ours. Westerners-I swear, the sheer arrogance. You think you're the only ones on Earth? You pillage and you butcher in your God's name. But you're not the only religion. And he's not the only God. And now, you think you can just rip the planet apart? You're wrong. There are billions of us. And we were here first. If anyone get's to end this world..." she walked closer to him, leaning down and cupping his face, "...It's me... I'm sorry."
In an instant, she plunged the blade straight through his chest, and my eyes widened as I let out a shocked scream.
"Gabriel!" I shouted, standing up before Baldur flicked his hand and I was forced back into my seat to watch as Gabriel let out a scream and his eyes burned out of his skull. I frowned and bit my lip, wanting so badly to turn away or scream, but I couldn't do anything but watch. When it was all over, Kali slowly backed away from the body and I finally looked down to my feet.
"This is crazy," I heard the creepy receptionist say and it was about the most normal thing I'd heard him say all day.
"They can die. We can kill Lucifer," Kali said, seeming shocked, but not too shocked, with what she just did.
"He could've helped us," I said softly, looking up at Gabriel's body, just laying there. I frowned as my lip started quivering and I looked away. I know he was a jerk, but he was still one of the good angels... He didn't deserve to die. Dean sighed and began to stand.
"All right, you primitive screwheads. Listen up," he said, walking behind the chairs as Sam and I both looked up at him like he was crazy.
"Are you out of your mind?" Sam asked worriedly.
"I'm out of options," Dean answered before continuing, "Now, on any other given day, I'd be doing my damnedest to, uh, kill you, you filthy, murdering chimps," he chuckled, making his way to where the drinks were slowly, "But, uh, hey... Desperate times. So even though I'd love nothing better than to slit your throat, you... Dicks... I'm gonna help you. I'm gonna help you ice the devil," he poured himself a drink, then turned back around to face everyone, "And then we can all get back to ganking each other, like normal. You want Lucifer? Well, dudes not in the yellow pages. But me, Sam, and Henry, we can get him here."
"How?" Kali questioned. I looked at Dean, remembering that I'd told him about me contacting Lucifer, and almost pleaded him not to tell her. He looked at me, opening his mouth before closing it again, then looked back at Kali.
"First, you let those main courses go. Then we talk. We can either take on the Devil together, or you lame-ass bitches can eat me... Literally."
The Gods let us let out the people in the freezers, thankfully. Dean told them what I was going to do and made me sit to do it while he went to let the people out, and I looked around at everyone awkwardly. Sam looked so hurt that Dean knew and he didn't, but I just hadn't had the time to tell him yet, between everything we were dealing with. I walked to the corner of the room, sitting down with my legs crossed. With one last glance at Sam, I sighed and closed my eyes, focusing on being in that place.
~
When I opened my eyes, I was there, and a little nudge was telling me he was already here. It wasn't the meadow of white, instead everywhere was just... blank, dark, and downright spooky.
"Lucifer!" I shouted into the blackness.
"Yes, my pet?" I heard behind me, turning on my heel with a gasp to see him standing right behind me.
"You want me and Sam, we're at a motel off I-90," I said, and he grinned, chuckling as he took a few steps forward, but I held my ground. Chills ran down my spine, but I refused to let him get the best of me this time. I had called him here, he was on my leash right now.
"How am I supposed to know this isn't just... A little trap?" he asked, circling around me.
"I'd think that if it was, you'd be smart enough to tell, don't you?" I questioned, gaining a growl from him, "Besides, you're strong enough to take on a couple humans, aren't you?"
"Just know, Henrietta, if it is a trap, you, your brother Dean, and anyone else there are going to die by my hand," he said, stopping in front of me with a sick smile.
"I wouldn't have it any other way, Luci," I said, matching his stare before closing my eyes to leave.
~
I opened my eyes to Sam standing in front of me, staring at me deeply.
"That was freaky," he said, and I shrugged. Before I could tell them, Dean ran in through the doors.
"Show's over. Sword's a fake. And Gabriel-he's still kicking. I hate to break it to you, sister, but you've been tricked," Dean said to Kali, and my breathing hitched.
"W-What?" I asked, standing from the floor, "No, no, no. Gabriel died. We watched his eyes burn out!" I tried to change the truth. I just called the most deadly angel in all of history to us, just for us to burn.
"I just talked to him," Dean argued and I gripped at my hair.
"We need to go. Now," I said, looking around, "There's no turning back. He's on his way."
Before we could do anything, the lights began flickering and I began shaking my head furiously. Screams of the Gods were heard from the hallway.
"He's here," I said, looking up as my heartbeat stilled. It was a strange feeling, as if everything around me stood still.
"Shazam us out of here, would you?" Dean asked. I tried to focus on my powers to zap us all out of there, but it was almost impossible. I could hardly focus any power into anything.
"We can't," Baldur spoke sullenly, just as a familiar face walked through the door.
"Of course you can't. You didn't say "Mother, may I?" Lucifer said, and chills ran down my spine once more. He was here. In person. Again.
"Luci-"
"Rhett," he snapped his head in my direction, "Don't worry, I knew it was a trap from the beginning. You think you were the first to call me?" he said, and I snapped my lips shut, looking at my brothers, who were starting to close in on him, "Sam, Dean," he said, looking at them as well, "Good to see you again."
"Baldur," Kali spoke as Baldur got closer to the fallen angel standing in front of us, "Don't."
"You think you own the planet? What gives you the right?!" Baldur raised his voice, charging straight at Lucifer, who simply put his hand through him like a kabob.
"No one gives us the right. We take it," Lucifer said softly, then pulled his arm out of Baldur, letting the now dead God fall to the floor. He then looked at my brothers and I, then to Kali, who I just realized had started to... Burn. She lifted her arm and fire flew from it, smothering the Devil. Dean grabbed me and tumbled over a table behind us with me as Sam simply jumped over the table.
I didn't dare look back at what was going as my heart raced. I couldn't do anything but stare straight forward, thinking about what he'd do to me and my brothers after defeating all these Gods.
"Are you okay?" Sam asked me and Dean.
"Not really," a totally different voice answered, and we all looked over to see Gabriel, "Better late than never, huh?" he asked and Dean nodded. He then slammed something on Dean's chest, but I couldn't really get a good look at it, "Guard this with your life."
That was the last thing he said before he twirled around the table and stood up. Now, I finally had the courage to look over the table. Kali was on the floor, about to meet her doom as Lucifer lifted his foot to stomp her, before he was thrown back.
"Lucy. I'm home," Lucifer started walking towards him, but Gabriel held up his angel blade, "Not this time," he started backing up as Lucifer stood down a little bit. Gabriel leaned down just enough to help Kali up off the floor, "Guys! Get her out of here," he said to us. Dean helped me up and him and Sam both ran to get Kali, but I was frozen. I couldn't take my eyes off Lucifer. Something was strange... Something was wrong...
He looked from my brothers straight to me. The two stopped and looked back.
"Henry, come on," Dean said, but it was drowned out. Like I couldn't even hear him.
"In a minute," I replied, the words slurred as if I'd been drinking. They both looked between each other before Sam ran back to get me, but I shook him off, "Go, I'll be out in a minute," I said, never taking my eyes off the fallen angel. He nodded and finally, him, Dean, and Kali ran out of the room. Something was hurting inside me, like I knew what was about to happen, but I couldn't remember what. All I knew was that it hurt.
"Over a girl," Lucifer finally reverted his stare back to Gabriel, who had been looking at me with worry, but turned his attention back to his brother, "Gabriel, really? I mean, I knew you were slumming, but... I hope you didn't catch anything."
"Lucifer... You're my brother, and I love you, but you are a great big bag of dicks."
"What did you just say to me?" Lucifer questioned in offense.
"Look at yourself. "Boo-hoo. Daddy was mean to me so I'm gonna smash up all his toys."
"Watch your tone."
"Play the victim all you want. But you and me-we know the truth. Dad loved you best. More than Michael. More than me. Then he brought the new baby home, and you couldn't handle it. So all this is just a great big temper tantrum. Time to grow up," Gabriel lectured, holding the blade up. The hair on the back of my neck started to stand up and I lifted my hand to it, knowing whatever I was staying for was going to happen soon. This scene seemed all too familiar.
"Gabriel, if you're doing this for Michael-"
"Screw him. If he were standing here, I'd shiv his ass, too," Gabriel cut Lucifer off, who then scoffed.
"You disloyal-"
"Oh, I'm loyal. To them."
"Who? These... So called Gods?"
"To people, Lucifer. People."
"So you're willing to die for a pile of cockroaches? Why?" hurtful...
"Because Dad was right. They are better than us."
"They are broken, flawed, abortions."
"Damn right, they're flawed," Gabriel took a deep breath before continuing, "But a lot of them try... To do better," I started backing up slowly, the air becoming cold as everything around me started becoming blurry, "To forgive. And you should see the spearmint Rhino. I've been riding the pine a long time, but I'm in the Game now. And I'm not on your side, or Michael's. I'm on theirs."
"Brother, don't make me do this."
"No one makes us do anything."
"I know you think you're doing the right thing, Gabriel. But I know where your heart truly lies," Lucifer said as a new Gabriel appeared behind him, holding up his angel blade. I had seen this before, and I knew exactly what was about to happen. I wouldn't let it. As soon as Lucifer started to turn around, I held up my hands, letting out a scream as I threw him across the room. I felt the blood drip down my nose as he hit the wall, looking up at me.
"You won't touch him!" I screamed at him, lifting him again, before he was all the way in front of me, grabbing my by the throat and lifting me off the ground. I clawed at his hand, trying to get him to let go, but knowing he wouldn't.
"Rhett, Rhett, Rhett. One day, you'll learn, you don't mess with a force as powerful as me," he moved me closer to his face, so his nose was just an inch away from mine, "Soon, you will be with me, my pet."
"Not today," a voice was heard behind him and he dropped me, turning around to see Gabriel in the same position. He grabbed the blade from his hand and plunged it into Gabriel's stomach instead of it's destination.
At the same time, I felt two fingers on my shoulder and all of a sudden, I was in the backseat of the impala, next to Kali, breathing heavily.
"Gabriel," I breathed, tears pricking my eyes. Sam and Dean both looked back at me as tears streamed down my cheeks, "He's dead, he's really dead. I couldn't... I couldn't save him. I tried..."
~
It turns out that the thing Gabriel had given Dean and told him to guard with his life was a porn. But not just any porn, it was a porn with him in it. Before it got to anything... Graphic, he stopped and looked at the camera, explaining that if we were watching this it meant he was dead, and how without him we're screwed. But he gave us a final option. He said that all the horsemen's rings were a key to the pit, where we could throw the Devil back in. All we had to do was get the rest of them. All we needed now was Pestilence and Death's rings and then we'd have a real shot at this.
We had hope.
