Chapter Three: Rising Of The Witnesses

"Angels don't exist, Sam. there's no such thing," I tried explaining to Sam from my spot on Bobby's couch while Dean and Sam talked in the kitchen.

"Well, tell me what else it could've been?" he asked.

"Look, all I know is we were not groped by an angel," Dean argued.

"Okay, look, guys. Why do you think this Castiel would lie to you about it?" Sam asked.

"He could be a demon, a very powerful demon," I said, sitting up.

"Demons lie." Dean backed me up.

"A demon who's immune to salt rounds and devils traps, and Ruby's knife? Guys, Lilith is scared of that thing!" Sam exclaimed.

"If angels were real-" I started.

"Don't you think that if angels were real that some hunter, somewhere would've seen one at some point... Ever?!" Dean asked, cutting me off so I laid back down.

"Yeah, you just did," Sam said.

"I'm trying to come up with a theory here. Okay? Work with me," Dean said.

"Dean, we have a theory," Sam argued.

"Yeah, one with a little less fairy dust on it, please."

"Okay, look. I'm not saying we know for sure. I'm just saying that I think we-" Sam said, but got cut off by Dean.

"Okay, okay. That's the point. We don't know for sure, so I'm not gonna believe that this thing is a freaking angel of the lord because it says so!"

"You two chuckleheads want to keep arguing religion, or do you want to come take a look at this," Bobby cut in and I sighed.

"Thank you!" I mumbled, getting off the couch and walking over to him.

"I got stacks of lore, biblical, pre-biblical. Some of it's in damn cuneiform. It all says an angel can snatch a soul from the pit," Bobby said.

"What else?" Dean asked, not believing it.

"What else, what?" Bobby asked.

"What else could do it?" I looked to Dean.

"Airlift your asses out of the hotbox? As far as I can tell, nothing," he said. I smiled.

"Dean, this might not be bad," I said.

"How?" he asked.

"I mean, we have an angel on our side," I answered.

"For once, this isn't just another round of demon crap. I mean, maybe you were saved by one of the good guys, you know?" Sam backed me up. Believe me, I didn't believe jack that angels were real, but this is the only option we've got left.

"Okay. Say it's true. Say there are angels. Then what? There's a god?" Dean asked and I shrugged. He's got a point.

"At this point, Vegas money's on yeah," Bobby said and I glanced at him before back to the boys.

"I don't know, guys," Dean said.

"Okay, look. I know you're not all choirboy about this stuff, but this is becoming less and less about faith and more and more about proof." Sam said and I decided I was getting out of here before a fight breaks out. I walked into the kitchen, getting a snack while listening to them.

"Proof?" Dean asked.

"Yes." Sam stated in an as-a-matter-of-fact tone.

"Proof that there's a god out there that actually gives a crap about me personally? I'm sorry, but I'm not buying it." Dean said.

"And me!" I piped in.

"Why not?" Sam asked, sounding like he was getting tired of arguing.

"Because why me?" he asked and I stopped, put the food down and walked back into the room. "If there is a god out there, why would he give a crap about me?!"

"Dean." I said softly.

"I mean, I've saved some people, okay? I figured that made up for the stealing and the ditching chicks, but why do I deserve to get saved? I'm just a regular guy." Dean said. It's like they forgot I was in hell too, and was pulled out too.

"Apparently, you're a regular guy that's important to the man upstairs, along with Rhett." Sam pointed me out and I waved slightly.

"Well, that creeps me out. I mean, I don't like getting singled out at birthday parties, much less by... God." Dean said.

"Okay, well too bad Dean. Because I think he wants you and Rhett to strap on your party hat." Sam said. There was a long pause before Dean cleared his throat.

"Fine, well what do we know about angels?" He asked. Bobby picked up a stack of books, slamming them on the desk.

"Start reading." he said. Dean pointed to Sam.

"You're gonna get me some pie."

~

We had started reading when Bobby told us we had a case.

"I can stay here and keep reading." I offered. He looked at me and nodded. I was laying on the couch with one of the biggest books I have ever seen in my hands.

"We won't be back for a day, at least. It's on the other side of the state." he said.

"Well then better get a move on." I said. Dean walked in.

"Watch yourself." he said, obviously remembering how I died.

"Maybe." I said with a smirk as they walked outside.

~

After a few hours of reading, a run out to the store for snacks, and some more hours of reading with snacks, I got a call. I answered.

"Yellow?" I said.

"Henry, be careful. Something bad's going on, we think it's happening to hunters." I heard Deans voice. I put the book down and walked to the kitchen for salt.

"Okay, Dean. I will." I said. He hung up and I started pouring salt in front of the entrances. I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around, spraying salt everywhere. There was a figure, but it vanished before I got a look at it. I continued my salting, very cautiously and when I was done, I put a circle around Bobby's desk so I could continue my reading in peace.

~

I woke up to someone shaking me gently. I looked up to see Bobby.

"Maybe you should go get some rest." he said and I nodded. I stood up, tiredly. I hugged Bobby before walking to the couch and laying down.

~

We had the Rising of the Witnesses. A sign of the apocalypse, which sucks. We found out that Bobby has a panic room too, which was pretty cool.

I woke up to shuffling beside me. I opened an eye to see Dean standing up. I noticed a figure and once my eyesight became clear, I saw that it was Castiel. Messy hair and all.

"Excellent job with the witnesses." Castiel said.

"You were hip to all this?" Dean asked, sounding pissed.

"I was, uh, made aware." Cass said. I stayed silent so they didn't know I was awake.

"Well, thanks a lot for the angelic assistance. You know, I almost got my heart ripped out of my chest." Dean said. I wanted to stand to get closer, but I was afraid they'd notice me.

"But you didn't." Cass said.

"I thought angels were supposed to be guardians. Fluffy wings, halos, you know, Michael Landon. Not dicks." Dean said. I saw the slightest trace of a smile on Castiel's face.

"Read the bible. Angels are warriors of God. I'm a soldier." He said.

"Yeah? Then, why didn't you fight?" Dean asked.

"I'm not here to perch on your shoulder. We had larger concerns." Cass answered.

"Concerns?" Dean asked through anger. "There were people getting torn to shreds down here! And, by the way, while all this is going on, where the hell is your boss, huh, if there is a God."

"There's a God." Castiel said.

"I'm not convinced," Dean argued. "Cause if there's a God, what the hell is he waiting for, huh? Genocide? Monsters roaming the earth? The freaking apocalypse? At what point does he lift a damn finger and help out the poor bastards that are stuck down here?"

At this point I had moved to the doorframe without being caught. I hoped I could keep it that way.

"The Lord works-" Cass started, getting cut off by Dean.

"If you say "Mysterious ways" so help me, I will kick your ass," Dean threatened. Castiel held up his hands in a defensive gesture. "So Bobby was right... About the witnesses. This is some kind of a... sign of the apocalypse." Dean said, taking a few steps towards Castiel.

"That's why we're here. Big things afoot." Cass answered, staring through the door. I hid behind the wall and just listened. Hopefully he didn't realize I was gone.

"Do I want to know what kind of things?" Dean asked and I peeked over the door frame again. Cass was now looking at Dean.

"I sincerely doubt it, but you need to know. The rising of the witnesses is one of the sixty six seals."

"Okay. I'm guessing that's not a show at SeaWorld." Dean said.

"Those seals are being broken by Lilith." my eyes went wide. That bitch!

"She did the spell. She rose the witnesses."

"Mm-hmm. And not just here. Twenty other hunters are dead."

"Of course. She picked victims that hunters couldn't save so that they would barrel right after us." Dean said, sounding annoyed.

"Lilith has a certain sense of humor." Cass said.

"Well, we put those spirits back to rest."

"It doesn't matter. The seal was broken."

"Why break the seal anyway?" Dean asked.

"You think as seals like locks on a door." Castiel answered.

"Okay. Last one opens and..." Dean trailed off. Cass turned to him.

"Lucifer walks free." he said. I bout lost my balance, but I grabbed a hold of the door frame in time.

"Lucifer? But I thought Lucifer was just a story they told at demon Sunday school. There's no such thing."

"Three days ago, you thought there was no such thing as me," Castiel said. Point taken. "Why do you think we're here walking among you now for the first time in two thousand years?"

"To stop Lucifer." Cass nodded.

"That's why we've arrived."

"Well... Bang-up job so far. Stellar work with the witnesses. That's nice." Dean said. I thought we were past that?

"We tried. There are other battles, other seals. Some we'll win, some we'll lose. This one we lost," Castiel said in defense. He took a few step toward Dean. "Our numbers are not unlimited. Six of my brothers died in the field this week. You think the armies of heaven should just follow you and your sister around? There's a bigger picture here," he leaned in. It was hard to hear, but when I strained my ears I could hear. "You should show me some respect. I dragged you out of hell. I can throw you back in."

This time I did lose my balance, slipping and falling face first into the kitchen. They both looked to me as I did to them.

"Bad time?"

~

A/N YES I know that was Deans dream but you'll seeeee you'll all seeee. Also, this has took like all day and I'm hungry and I want pie or something but we don't have pie.
