Chapter Sixteen

 i swear to god ethan

3rd person pov 

she got the office with kirby and looked at the women, she sat down and kirby turned to look at her. 

"thank god you're here, so they found sams id at the scene of the crime. i know your alibi and the others but they're going to question you and you have to be ready for that" kirby said and then there was knock on the door and they turned to see detective bailey 

"can I help you?" he asked them 

"special agent kirby reed, FBI. i work out of the Atlanta office. this is kai meeks-martin, shes my apprentice" she told them 

"your two vics were residents of my city before they moved here for college. i have been investigating their online activity for the past few months" she exclaimed 

"why?" he asked 

"I take a special interest in ghostface attacks" she stated and then they heard sams voice 

"kirby? kai?" she asked 

"hey, sam" kirby said and she walked out with kai as she hugged sam and sam looked at kai who shrugged 

"what? you're the FBI?" sam asked 

"you guys know each other?" he asked 

"yeah. we went to woodsboro high together" sam exclaimed and she looked at kai who scuffed her shoes. she hadn't told her that she was working with kirby and now she hated not telling her

"she was a senior when I was a freshman" sam told him 

"we share a certain history, yeah. I'm not trying to get into a jurisdictional pissing contest here, I just want to help. ill show you mine, et cetera" kirby said as she handed him what she had 

"he left this mask at the bodega. DNA traces of two individuals, charlie walker, jill roberts, both deceased" he told kirby 

"the ghostface killers of 2011. charlie walker gave me this. like I said,  i take a special interest. is this the mask he was wearing when he attacked you?" she asked 

"No" tara stated 

"so he's leaving them on purpose" bailey suggested 

"which means whoever is doing this is a student of the killers who came before. maybe he believe sam is the latest in the long line" kirby told 

"yeah, good luck with that. we're getting out of town. kai are you coming with us?" she asked her 

"I'm sorry, that's not possible. you're both persons of interest in double homocide, so you're not allowed to leave town. sorry" he told them 

"are you serious?" tara asked 

"he's right but if we work together--" kirby suggested and sam cut her off 

"we're going" sam said and she walked off with tara following and kai did too. when they walked outside. they saw a group of newsreporters and kai wrapped her arm around sam and tara as they began to walk forward through the crowd 

"move, move, move, thank you, excuse us" kai kept saying as she pushed through the crowd and they were almost at the end until they heard a voice 

"gale weathers, channel 4. do you ladies think you're the reason the ghostface killer has come to the big apple?" gale asked and kai scoffed 

"tell me you're not fucking serious right now gale" kai told her aunt and she turned to her. the women stared at kai for a second and thought if she really wanted to do this, after everything that happened in woodsboro. they were supposed to stick together but it was clear that gale had another plan. sam went to swing on her and she dodged her 

"nice try , sweetie, but I've done this dance before" she said and then tara swung and punched her in the face as kai laughed and smiled. she looked at gale 

"stay away from us" tara told gale and she grabbed sams hand as sam grabbed kais and they walked off but gale followed. 

"are you really still mad at me?" she asked 

"you said you wouldn't write a book about what happened and then you wrote a book about what happened" sam stated 

"oh, come on. somebody was gonna write about it. its what i do" gale said 

"i heard you couldn't sell the movie rights" tara said 

"its all about true-crim limited series these days" gale said 

"like that makes it any better. after everything we went through together, that's the shit you pull. what would dewey think?" kai asked 

"that was a low blow" 

"so was your book. you called me unstable and a born killer" sam said 

"that's taken out of context" gale said 

"that's literally a quote" sam retorted 

"you don't think what you wrote has something to do with whats happening to us?" tara asked 

"hey, i talked to sidney. she sends her love but shes taking mark and the kids someplace safe. she deserves to have her happy ending" gale said 

"on that much, we agree" sam said and they got into the taxi.

"hey, i want to catch this fucker as much as you do!" she called 

"maybe or maybe youre just afraid that without ghostface in your life, youre gonna fade away" tara said and they got into as he drove off and away from them. 

kai now sat next to sam and chad as they talked to each other with the others. 

"okay, nerds listen up! as terrifying. As all this is, I'm actually glad I get a chance to redeem myself we're not calling the killer last time.its fine okay. The way I see it, someone is out to make a sequel to the prequel" mindy stated

"whats a requel?" anika asked

"you're beautiful, sweetie. Let's hold the questions to the end." mindy told her

"stab one took place in Woodsboro, step 2 Took Place in college." sam said

"so we think that the killer is trying to copy the movies?" tara asked

"that is one possibility. Heroes now in college: check. Suspicious new characters brought to round out the suspect list and/ or body count: check,check and check" mindy said

"I don't like this" ethan said

"but it can't just be about stab 2. It wouldn't make sense." mindy told them

"why not?" tara asked

"if this were just a sequel, but we're not in a sequel, because nobody just makes sequels anymore. We're in a franchise! And there are certain rules to a continuing franchise. rule one: I had a feeling. Everything is bigger than last time. Bigger budget, bigger, cast, bigger body count, longer chases ,shootouts ,beheadings. You got to top what came before to keep people coming back" mindy said

"beheadings?" chad asked

"beheadings" mindy said and kai nodded

"rule two: whatever happened last time expect the opposite. Franchisees only survived by subverting expectations. If the killers last time were whiny, snowflake, film nerds with letterboxd accounts instead of personalities, you can bet the opposite will be true. Rule three: no one is safe. Legacy characters.? Cannon fodder at this point. Usually brought back only to be killed in some cheap nostalgia.. it is not looking good for Gale or Kirby. oh, and that's not even the worst part!" she said and dakota looked at chad who was writing it down

"this is the part where she tells us the worst part" chad said

"the worst part is franchises are just continuing episode installments designed to boost an IP which means main characters are completely expendable now, too. laurie strode, nancy thompson, ellen ripley, sally hardest, jigsaw, tony stark, james bond" she kept going

"OK so you know what I'm saying they all died so the franchises could live on. That means it's not just the friend group. Any of us could go at any time, especially Sam and Tara." mindy said

"wait, any of us? including me " he said "yeah" mindy spoke

"am I in the friend group?" he asked

"mm-hmm" mindy hummed

"am I like, one of the targets? am i gonna die a virgin?" he asked and dakota laughed

"oh tmi" kai told him 

"yeah, that was a weird over share, but it brings us to our current suspects: ethan. The shy dorky guy, who no one suspects because he's so shy and dorky" mindy spoke

"why am I on the suspect list? Because I'm randomly Chad's roommate?" ethan asked

"roommate lotteries can be juked" mindy said

"quinn. the slutty roommate. a horror movie classic" mindy stated

"sex positive but thank you?" she said

"how did you come to live with Sam and Tara?" mindy asked

"I answered their ad online" quinn said

"okay, say no more. you're already implicated yourself enough" mindy exclaimed

"it was an anonymous ad Mindy and you know we vetted her. Plus her dad is a cop" tara stated

"and that makes it more likely that she's the killer, because having a cop dad is a great cover. Do you not remember how these movies work ,Tara?" mindy questioned her

"is she always like this?" quinn asked

"all the time but you get used to it" kai said

"and finally Anika. Never trust the love interest" mindy said

"okay! So we have our rules and we have our suspects" sam said

"but wait, what about you guys?" ethan asked

"i mean , i think its pretty safe to rule out the five of us out who went through this last year in woodsboro" mindy said

"agreed" chad said

"not agreed, what if you all went through caused one of more of you to snap?" quinn suggested

"yeah, or the fame you got from the killings made you thirsty for more. Let's be honest here, some of the theories online about Sam are." ethan said

"don't you fucking dare" tara said

"i swear to god ethan" kai told him and he nodded his head as he looked at his lap

"OK she's right though I mean face facts if we're all suspects, you're all suspects" anika said and that left them at a standstill. this is when they would go home and talk about it more.

what would happen when they got back to the apartment later that night?
