Chapter 21
The three cautiously exited the room they had been hiding inside, on the lookout for any sign of Maxwell. So far they hadn't seen him, but they still walked carefully, worried he may sneak up on them and ruin their plan completely.
Luckily, the three of them could hear Maxwell's taunting voice up ahead of them, meaning their plan just may work out. Still they approached warily, worried that even the tiniest thing may go wrong-and if it did, then there entire plan would likely fail.
"Hey, Maxwell!" Toast shouted angrily at him, keeping Ghost behind him. Ghost looked behind him to see that Spooker was gone. He had run off to hide from Maxwell. Ghost sighed as he looked back at Toast worriedly, hoping the plan could still go well.
"Oh, back to try and fight again, I see? Brave decision.. But not a very smart one." He chuckled, grinning maliciously as he approached Toast.
Toast stood his ground, pushing Ghost further back to keep Maxwell away from him. Growling, Toast lunged at Maxwell, looking around his neck to find the chain was indeed wrapped around his neck as Spooker said it would be. As Toast went to grab Maxwell, he threw him back without even touching him, the same terrifying and completely evil grin across his lips.
Ghost cast a worried glance at Toast, but as soon as he saw Toast was already beginning to sit up he turned back to Maxwell, jumping towards him in the hopes of getting the necklace. He wasn't thrown back as Toast was, but Maxwell easily stepped away from him, making Ghost stumble and nearly fall on his face while Maxwell chuckled.
Ghost and Toast continued to fight Maxwell, trying their hardest to get the necklace from around his neck. Finally however, Spooker was the one to shout in victory as he successfully snuck up behind Maxwell, who was too busy taunting Ghost and Toast to notice the third person. However, his successful cry turned out to be a mistake as Maxwell angrily turned around to face him.
"..uh-oh.." He muttered, grinning sheepishly and barely managing to toss the vial to Toast before he was thrown back. His head hit the wall, hard, and it was very clear Spooker would not be getting back up for a little while. Toast was able to catch the vial, unable to even spare a glance at the poor injured younger man, instead watching as Ghost rushed to Maxwell, pulling out a knife and opening his hands for Toast to throw his the vial.
Toast did just that, throwing it to him and Ghost, barely able to keep it from sipping out of his hands, opened it up, using the strange contents on the knife.
Looking up at the angry and shocked Maxwell who was just about to hurt Ghost, he plunged the knife into his chest, Maxwell gasping for breath as his eyes went wide and scared, clutching at the hilt of the knife and attempting to pull it out. However, Ghost had made sure that was not possible.
Ghost stared as Maxwell dropped to his knees, looking up at Ghost and giving the weakest of grins. Ghost was confused, until he saw a flash of silver in Maxwell's hands, just before he screamed in pain and disappeared, for good.
Toast was smiling, happy that Maxwell was finally gone, and that all was okay. He took one step towards Ghost, wanting nothing more than to rush to him, to kiss him, to tell him that he loved him and that they won! They did it! And they had saved someone!
As soon as Ghost turned around to face him though, Toast stopped dead in his tracks. He knew something wasn't right, he could tell just by looking at Ghost's face. Ghost looked down, and Toast's eyes quickly followed, and he felt his heart immediately drop to his feet.
The end of a knife was buried all the way into his stomach. His face was deathly pale as he collapsed onto his knees, Toast immediately running as fast as possible to catch him in his arms, laying him back and tightly gripping onto him. "Ghost.. Oh Johnny, no, you're alright, you'll be alright, you have to be alright..." Toast muttered, shaking his head back and forth almost violently, in denial that anything could possibly happen to his love. Not now. Just when things had begun to look up for them both.
"I'm.. I'm sorry Johnny.." Ghost looked up at him, tears already soaking his face. Toast wiped some away with his thumb as his hand rested on Ghost's cheek, cradling it. If Toast held on tight enough, he believed, Ghost wouldn't leave him. Ghost would be okay. He just had to be.
"No, no, no, don't be sorry love please, don't be sorry. You're okay, everything is going to be okay..." He said, closing his eyes and repeating that, so desperately holding on in an attempt to believe it for longer.
"I.. I don't think they will be, Johnny.." Ghost mumbled, closing his eyes and leaning into Toast's arms. "Please keep holding me.. I know I said this before but... I could die in your arms... And I would be, so at peace... Please hold me.."
"No, no, no one is dying here, Ghost. Please Johnny, please don't say that now." Toast held him tighter. They heard Spooker speaking into a phone somewhere in the room, but neither of them paid any attention. They only looked up at each other, staring into each other's eyes. Taking everything in, just in case. Just in case, it may be the last time. Toast refused to believe it, though.
"I love you, Ghost.. I love you so much, please know that, I love you with all of my heart.. I don't want to lose you.." Toast whispered, many tears falling from his own eyes at this point.
"And I love you too.. Johnny..." Ghost's voice was getting softer and weaker by the second. He didn't have much time, they both realized. "More than anything in the world.. I always have..." He smiled.
Toast gave a tear-filled smile back, the faint sounds of sirens in the distance, but neither of them could hear. Nor could they see anything else besides each other. The two of them were all that mattered right now.
"Kiss me.." Ghost mumbled. "Hold me in your arms and kiss me. Please."
"You're going to be okay, love.." Toast whispered, a sob escaping him as he leaned down to give Ghost what he wanted. A long sweet and passionate kiss, full of love and hope and complete adoration for each other. As they kissed, Ghost found it harder and harder to kiss back as hard, until the kiss had completely ended, Ghost lips unmoving as no breathe came from them.
Toast pulled away to look at him with wide eyes, shaking his head over, and over, and over again. This couldn't be happening. Not his Ghost. Not now, after he had finally been happy with him.
Toast knew he had to face it. Ghost was already gone. There was nothing Toast could do now.
Whoa. Last chapter guys.. Man this is really emotional isn't it? Well maybe for you guys, I'm just here smiling evilly. Mwahahaha~
No but seriously, this is in fact the last chapter of the book, I could die in your arms. There will be an epilogue, and then that is it for the story. Please read the epilogue as I'm aware some people skip over that, but it is very important for the ending of the story. Have some hope guys!
I really really really hope that you've enjoyed this chapter. I will see you in the epilogue, soon. Bye for now!-Bob
Also before someone corrects me about Maxwell trying to pull the knife out of his chest saying "you're not supposed to do that do your research Bob!!!1!!" Do you really think that stab wound would kill a ghost? The last thing he could hope to do was get the knife out as soon as possible so the poison wouldn't have as much of an effect on him.
