Chapter 50: The Next One

Song for the start of the chapter!

"Are you ok?" Sherlock asked me as we walked down a small alley not far from the boat statue.

I looked at the broken Sherlock beside me. He was walking on his own but I could tell he was struggling with each step, weak from the last couple days. I knew Zane was brutal but he had never attacked me as much as he had Sherlock. Whatever Zane was in bed with had to be left alone. "I should be asking you that." I looked back at Zane, unable to look at his bruised face any longer. This was my fault.

"Rori, come here for a moment," Zane said ahead of me.

I sped up my pace until I was walking right beside Zane. I looked at him with loathing and asked sharply, "what do you want?"

Zane looked at me with a smile. "Well someone woke up on the wrong side of bed today. I may have heard, did you have a run in with my brother lately?"

I didn't respond even though he wanted a response from me. He was trying to get under my skin and I wasn't going to give that to him. I needed to have a clear mind for what happened next. Instead I looked indifferent, like I didn't care.

"Well I want you to help me with this compass. You see there are three holes, where do you put the pin? I am sure you must know by now because you have been doing your research, more so than I have."

"The left."

He raised his eye brow and said, "well then, I'll just choose the right." He put the pin in the right hand side and watched as the compass came to life and point to the east.

"The game is on," he said as he smiled at me.

"The game has always been on." I looked back at Sherlock and John to make sure they were ok.

Lestrade walked up and down his office in Scotland Yard as he tried to get a grasp of what he just saw only 40 minutes ago. He pulled out his phone and tried calling the number that Rori used for the 7th time in a row. To his disappointment it went straight to voice mail.

He thought about what he was going to do next as he walked out of his office. "Boss did you see a ghost or somethig?" someone asked him.

"I think I just did," he said and then raised his voice to make sure everyone heard him that was in the office. "I have reason to believe that Rori Anderson is still alive. She presented herself to me about 40 minutes ago and I want to track her phone. Her number is 44 20 7239 1076. Don't just faff around. Get to work!" He walked back into his office to think about what she said to him.

He knew Rori, she wouldn't have come to him unless she wanted to use him for something. She had been planning something for a long time and it was now that she wanted him to play her game. He had to stop her. She had to be up to no good.

After little over 15 minutes, Donovan walked into the office with her dark curly hair pulled back into a bun. "boss?" she asked as if waiting for a reply back.

"Yes?" Lestrade said as he stood up from his chair like he just sat on something sharp.

"We tracked her to Greenwich station. Do you know why she would tell you she was alive just to have us track her?"

He shook his head as he thought about it. "No idea."

Rori

We took alleyways and side streets to avoid attention until we got to an old boat yard.  It took us about 20 minutes to get there. Over the course of those minutes Zane looked at his watch at least three different times. He was keeping track of time. He was expecting something to happen? "Do you like that watch Zane?" I said with sarcasm in my voice.

"Yeah, you know, it's new." He smiled at me as we stopped in front of a huge indoor boat yard. The metal building was old and was now starting to rust because of the London weather. Zane looked at the compass that was now spinning in all directions. "We're here."

"Are you sure this is it?" I asked, making him question himself. Lestrade or police sirens where no where to be seen. I looked at the men beside us and knew that I couldn't over power them. I needed back up but it looks like that wasn't coming.

He paused for a minute as he thought about it. "No, this has to be it." He walked over to the door and looked at me. "Care to do the honor?"

"I don't want to but I guess I don't have a choice now do I?" I asked as I looked at the two guards that were behind me. They were big and by the look of their tattoos I would guess ex-military. They were trained in the art of fighting. But if I were to distract them, I could maybe get the key from Zane and run off. But I wouldn't be able to take the compass as well. And what about Sherlock and John? Sherlock was in on condition to run at this moment. I needed to use the gun under my shirt. I just needed to wait for the right time.

I made eye contact with Sherlock and then to the guards. He did a slight nod. He knew what I was thinking about.  "What are you waiting for. Get on your knees," Zane said as he pushed me to the ground.

I felt my knee bruise instantly as they hit the cement. "A bit pressed for time?" I started to work on opening the big metal door with my hair pin.

I just had to wait for the right time. I knew that as soon as I open the door, I could hit the man beside me easily with the metal door and if I applied enough pressure I could knock him out. That leaves the other guard. He would be alarmed but the way he had his shoulders pressed forward he didn't really want to be here. Zane was probably black mailing him. I could use the gun with him.

"Woah, woah, woah, now what do we have here?" Zane asked as he pushed me hard enough against the door. I felt him lift up my shirt and take the gun I had. "You cheeky little girl," he said as he loaded the gun.

I got up from the ground with a frown. I knew what he was thinking. He was going to use that on us. "Don't do it Zane. Look, I'll do what you want me to do."

"You see Rori, you have been an arse recently." He fired the gun, grazing my right side.

I cried out in pain as I sank to the ground, clutching my side as blood flow from between my fingers.

"Stop this Zane! You need her," John said and rushed to help me.

I knew a flesh wound when I felt one. I would live and Zane knew that too. I had a job he needed me to finish. Then after that, who knows what he would do to me.

Now, injured there was no way I could fight these men off. "It's ok. I'm find John," I said as I pushed myself up from the ground in pain.

"Open the door Rori or the next one gets lodged into the blond one," Zane said as he loaded the gun again and pointed it at John.

There was no way out of opening this door. Zane was one more step close to the treasure, but so was I. I knelt back down and started to fiddle with the door again.

"So what are you going to do with this?" John spoke up calmly to Zane. Man, John was a life saver. did he know I needed someone to speak up?

I heard the door click. But no one was paying attention thanks to John. I looked at the man beside me and knew that I could still knock him out, leaving only one more to fight of. Maybe I still had it in me. I wrapped my hand around the edge of the door and waited for the right moment.

"Like you would like to know."

"No. I do. What will you do with it?" John made eye contact with me for a second and then looked back a Zane. He knew what he was doing. Giving me time.

"Well.."

He started but wasn't able to finish because I pulled open the door as hard as I could. It hit the guard standing closest to me and he fell to the ground with a loud thump. I looked at John and Sherlock to see what they were doing but the other guard got in my way and shoved me into the wall causing my hand to bend and crack in an odd way. I let out a scream as I tried to move my hand out from under my body pressure.

"This! This is what I am tired of Rori." Zane yelled as he wagged the gun around in the air as the guard pushed me against the wall. "No more games. Let's just finish this once and for all." He turned to help up the guard that got hit from the ground.

The guard that was holding me against the wall let go of me and shoved me into the building of the boat yard first.  I held my hand gently as I fought tears that threatened to spill over. I was in pain. I looked at my now bloodied jacket then at my hand. I knew my hand was broken. I then looked around at the spacious room that was empty. We made it to the wrong one. Good.

I whipped a tear from my eye.  By time everyone was in the building, I had already regained composer. I turned to face Zane with a smile on my face, we went to the wrong yard.

"Wrong boat house and look at that, you tripped a wire," I said and pointed to the front door showing there was a wire that was now broken. "I would guess you have one more guess until the real treasure explodes."

"NO!" he screamed and stopped his foot on the ground like a toddler. "Everyone out, now!" He fiddled with the compass causing it to fall on the ground.

He was rattled. What kind of trouble did he get himself into? Regardless of the situation now, for time since this case started, I felt like I was on top. I had more cards in my hands then he did.

"So she threw away her phone here. Why didn't she crush it so we wouldn't be able to track it? Why did she leave it here where anyone could come and find it?" Lestrade asked, mainly to himself as he walked around the opening to the tube in Greenwich.

"Why did she call you and leave it here?" Donovan asked.

"She told me to look into boat yards. How many boat yards are around here?"

Donovan stopped and scrunched up her face as she thought about it. "It's the port of the town, there has to be loads of them around here."

Lestrade swore under his breath. "Then lets split up within a 5km radius. We're going to find her and bring her in, this time she is not slipping through our fingers."

After all of his men were gone, he found himself alone with Donovan.

"Why would she tell me about this? What did she want me to do? She was free of us, she could of left this town but yet she stayed. Why?"

"Why don't you ask her yourself when we find her?" Donovan asked her boss confidently as she started to make her way to the escalator to get out of the Tube.
