Two
Luke pulled up to an old light blue three story Victorian house. I stared at it in awe as he slowly went up the dirt driveway to the gravel spot at the side of the house. To say the house was beautiful was an understatement. It was simply amazing in every way. This was going to be the house I will be living in. I couldn't believe it. I heard Luke chuckle from beside me, "Do you like the house?"
"Yes. It's stunning." I replied as I kept starting at the house.
"It is. Luckily Alex was able to get it when his father died. It's been in his family since it was built. I think it was built in 1879, so hopefully you aren't afraid of ghosts." Luke said as he got out of his car.
I got out as well, going to the driver's side to try to get my duffel bag but Luke wouldn't let me take it. I looked back at the house, "Is it really haunted?"
Luke chuckled, "I've lived here since before you were born and have not seen any sign of ghosts, so you're safe. I was just making a joke because the house is so old."
I gave a shrug as I followed him up the back porch steps. It wouldn't bother me to live in a haunted house. I think it would actually be pretty cool. That is as long as the ghost wasn't evil and didn't try to murder me or anything. Luke lifted my suitcase with ease as he walked up the five wooden steps onto the back deck, painted white and fading from weather and wear. He unlocked the back door before nodding his head, letting me know to go inside in front of him. I took a few steps into the house. I was in what I assumed would be a mud room on the side of the kitchen. I looked into the kitchen to see everything being white. White cabinets, white marble counter-tops, white brick walls, and a light brown hardwood floor.
A guy who looked to be in his early twenties, with long brown hair and dark blue eyes was leaning back against the island counter drinking out of a black mug while looking at his cell phone. This must be Kellin. He saw me out of the corner of his eye and turned his head to look at me. When he saw me, he dropped his phone and the mug he was holding, which shattered and spilled red contents all over the floor. I took a step back as he stared at me in awe, bumping into Luke. Luke put his hand on my lower back, "That was my favorite mug, Alex."
This is Alex? He doesn't look old enough to know my dad, or be friends with Luke. Then again when I asked Luke how old he was he told me he was thirty-four, which is far from the twenty-four I thought he was, so maybe Alex is older than he looks. Alex stared at me for a minute in shock before running to me and pulling me into a tight hug. Luke still had his hand on my lower back, as if he was trying to comfort me. Alex pulled away from the hug after a few minutes, making me feel very uncomfortable.
"Oh my god, Avery! We've missed you! I can't believe you're really here. How are you? How have you been?" Alex asked in one breath before pulling me into another tight hug.
I turned my head slightly, hoping he would notice how uncomfortable I was and let me go. Luke dropped my suitcase down on the floor, making me jump slightly and making Alex let go of me. "You read her file even though you weren't supposed to, you know how she's been."
Alex looked over at Luke as he rolled his eyes, "Paper doesn't tell me anything. I want to hear it from her."
I looked down at the hardwood floor as Alex looked back at me and gave him a small shrug, "I mean, I'm alive. I don't remember anything before a few years ago. I guess because I'm alive I've been okay."
Alex placed his finger under my chin and pulled my face up to look at him. He was giving me a little smile, "You are alive, and that means a lot to us."
Luke picked my suitcase back up, "Let me give you a tour of the house while Alex cleans up the mess he made."
Alex shook his head and rolled his eyes before turning around and picking up the broken cup, sliding his cell phone into his pocket in the process. Luke walked past me and I quickly followed him, worried Alex would pull me into another hug. We came out of the kitchen and to a staircase that had a slight curve halfway up. I followed Luke up the staircase, "Do you want your old bedroom back, or a new bedroom?"
"How many bedrooms are in this place?"
"Eight."
I almost choked on my breath, "Eight?!"
Luke gave a chuckle, "Yes, eight. We've turned a couple of them into junk rooms because we have no use for them. My room and Alex's room are on the third floor while your old room and Kellin's room are on this floor."
"I'm fine with my old room. I don't want to be any trouble." I replied.
Luke smiled as he walked down the hallway and stopped at a white wooden door. He set my suitcase down before reaching on top of the door frame for a small key before unlocking the door. He put the key back on top of the door frame and picked my suitcase up, opening the door. As the bedroom came into view, I held in my breath. It was fairly large with a bay window and a fireplace. The walls, ceiling, window frames, and fireplace were white. A queen sized bed with a blue flower comforter was across the room from the fireplace. Two white wooden side tables were on each side of the bed. A white bookshelf full of books was beside the bed, near the windows while a white dresser was on the other wall in between the bay windows and fireplace. Another white bookshelf with toys on it was beside the door while a white armoire was on the other side of the fireplace. The left of the room beside the door held a light pink loveseat.
"Are you sure you're okay with this room?" Luke asked, following me into the room.
I nodded my head, "Absolutely! This room is amazing."
He gave another chuckle before setting my suitcase and duffle bag on the bed, "Alright then. We will need to clean out your old things to get you set up. I'm sure you don't want all of these toys taking up space. Unless you want to have tea parties every Thursday night."
I couldn't help but laugh. Luke made me feel calm. I glanced down at the side table closest to me to see a picture frame. I picked it up to see a guy who looked about seventeen with long dark brown hair sitting on top of a slide, smiling as he was looking down at a little girl with brown hair in his lap who was smiling as she was looking up at the guy. Was this my dad? I turned the picture frame around to show Luke, "Is this my dad?"
Luke looked down at the picture before nodding, "Yes. That was taken a few months before he died."
"Will you take me to his grave one day?" I asked as I set the picture frame back down on the side table. When Luke didn't say anything I looked over at him. His face had fallen and he looked at me with sadness in his eyes, "Avery, Vincent doesn't have a grave."
My father doesn't have a grave? Was he cremated? I was about to ask when I heard Alex's voice from behind me, "He doesn't have a grave because his body was never found. We thought it would be wrong to bury an empty casket in case if his body ever showed up."
"What happened to him?"
Alex took a couple of steps into the bedroom before taking in a deep sigh, "We still don't really know to this day. Vinnie's car was found in the parking lot where he worked with his blood all in it and he was nowhere to be found. You were his entire world, so we knew he wouldn't leave you willingly."
I felt my heart shatter. Not only do I not remember my father, he was murdered and the case is unsolved. I looked back down at the picture of us on my nightstand. What kind of torture and pain did he go through in his last moments? Was he scared? Did he worry about what was happening to him? Did his murderer bury him in a shallow grave somewhere? Or did his murderer pull a Dahmer and eat him? I felt my knees give way under my weight as I thought about not knowing anything about my dad's death apart from he was alone with an evil person. Arms came around me and caught me before I fell to the floor, "Maybe it's best to save this for another day."
Alex pulled me to the light pink love seat and forced me to sit down. I didn't want to sit, but my body wouldn't allow me to do anything other than allowing Alex sit me down. I shook my head as I looked up at Alex, "I want to know about him."
I heard a sigh come from Alex as he sat beside me. He wiped at my eyes with his thumbs. I didn't even realize I was crying. Alex stared at me with his dark blue eyes which held sadness, "What do you want to know?"
"Everything. I don't remember anything, even if I didn't have amnesia I doubt I would be able to remember since I was so young." I replied.
"Well, Vinnie loved to take pictures. There are a lot of boxes full of pictures he's taken in his bedroom. He turned one of the guest rooms into a darkroom. He loved music and played the drums." Alex started. I cut him off, "What was his favorite band?"
"His absolute favorite band was New Found Glory. When you were three, they came to Atlanta. He and I were going to the show and you cried until we agreed to take you with us. It was your first concert and you absolutely loved it." Luke said from in front of us, a smile on his face as if he was remembering the day. He walked to the fireplace and picked up a picture frame before bringing it to me. I took the picture frame and looked at the picture inside it. The guy from the picture on my night stand was holding the little girl and I could clearly tell the little girl was me and the guy holding me looked a lot like me. The guy standing beside us was Luke and he looked exactly the same as he did now, like he hasn't aged a day. There were five other guys in the picture and I didn't know who they were. I pointed at them, "Who are these guys?"
"New Found Glory." Luke said, the smile still evident on his face. I got to meet them? That's super cool. Luke put a couple of what he said were some of my favorite songs by them on the radio on the way here and I really liked them. Not only did I get to meet them, I saw them in concert. My super young childhood seems like it was full of so much love and awesomeness. I can't help but say I'm a little jealous of childhood me. If only my father wasn't murdered or if Luke was able to find his will, I would have had a good life. From what I heard from the Kennedy's and what I saw in photos and home movies, my time with them wasn't bad. But after the wreck, how Seth always yelled at me, it eventually got to me and I couldn't help but think sometimes that it was my fault that both Jack and Sammy died. I mean, we wouldn't have wrecked if I didn't ask them to take me to see X-Men.
Alex wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me into him, as if he knew what was on my mind, "Just know we're here for you. I know what happened to Vincent is upsetting, but we have never lost hope. He could still be out there for all we know. You're back with us and we will not let anything happen to you."
"Thank you. That means a lot to me." It was true. It's hard coming into a family that is my real family but not being able to remember anything. So that makes me feel like I'm really wanted here. Luke appeared in front of me, kneeling down, and grabbing my hand, "You're not going to leave our side easily this time. We love you and have missed you so much."
I set the picture frame in my lap down on the love seat beside me before leaning up and pulling Luke into a hug. I felt safe here, like I belonged here. The Kennedy's were a nice family and I could tell I loved them, but the feeling I have with Luke and Alex is stronger. I feel like I've known them all my life when I just met them today. Or re-met them, I guess? I was a little awkward around them but I still felt comfortable with them. Luke held me tightly as he leaned his head down on mine, "Avery, Vincent would be so proud of the young lady you've become."
A small giggle came out of me, "You think so? I'm a broken shell of a teenager who doesn't know who she is."
"As long as you're alive, Vinnie would be proud of who you are." Alex said as he smoothed his hand over my head, "No one ever really knows who they are, it takes decades. But now you have us to help you."
I smiled. I was finally home. I felt at home. With the Kennedy's I never felt very wanted, mostly because of Seth. I still cared for the family, but I felt more wanted here than I ever did there. I had been away from them for a week and I honestly missed them. They were the only family I knew. I was glad to be with my real family now. I felt like some tiny part of me that had been empty was now filled and I assumed it was because of the two guys in the room with me now.
