✷ 024: Awkward.
I CAN FIX HIM ! by KissLeclerc
November 14, 2022 # "Bonk?"
AFTER ARRIVING TO SCHOOL, Ollie and Adeline hung out in the parking lot before heading into the building to book it straight for their world history class with Mr. Riciarrdo-Not Adeline's most favored teacher, but the hour had went by smoothly and that was beautiful.
Since she practically had an identical class schedule with Ollie, she was glued to his side all day, every day. As the morning went on, the two eventually made it to their French class where the brunette boy immediately took it upon himself to nap.
As per usual.
With another droning lecture that Adeline couldn't seem to stand at all, the clock ticked faster than she had wished.
Thank God.
"Get up." She yawned, nudging the boy beside her to wake him up. "Lunch time."
"Hmm?" Ollie glanced around the classroom in confusion. His left airpod on the verge of falling out of his ear as he sat up straight.
"I might sleep during chemistry too-Not gonna lie."
"Nobody is stopping you." Adeline shrugged as she packed her bag, continuing to get up from her seat and wait for him.
Bidding their French teacher a goodbye and wishing him a good day, the duo quickly exited the classroom, heading straight for their usual lunch table.
"Are you gonna talk to her right now?" Adeline asked as Ollie rubbed a hand across his face. "Maybe." He replied.
"Wrong answer. You are." She snickered, causing him to let a breath out-He was obviously nervous.
"And what about that blonde crush of yours?" Ollie soon turned it around on her, making Adeline's heartbeat briefly stop, so in return, she shoved his side.
"I've had enough of you." She grumbled.
"I was really enjoying the sweet exchanges we've been having all morning." The boy sighed. "We should be nice to each other more often."
"Not when you give me many reasons to kick your ass every second of the day." The debate captain was quick to shoot back.
"Whatever."
Continuing to walk through the halls side by side, the best friends continued to banter and quietly chat as the topics of their conversation were quite confidential.
Upon entering the outside quad, Adeline was quick to stop in her tracks when she noticed something.
Oh good fucking lord.
"No way." She shook her head and glanced at Ollie.
"Oh! Well. Welcome back, Paul." The boy mumbled as he noticed what she was staring at, nudging her side playfully but she was not having it.
"Why is he sitting at the table?" Adeline began to panic. "I can't face him? Not after what I just confessed to you this morning?! OLLIE." She grabbed his forearm and began to squeeze it uncontrollably.
"Okay-OKAY, OW!" He winced. "OFF." The boy tugged his arm away. "Just act normal."
"I'm gonna kill you." She glared.
"Deep breaths, Ads." Ollie turned to her and grabbed her by the shoulders. "DEEP." He inhaled. "Breaths." Then exhaled.
Nodding at his instructions, the girl began to take deep breaths as her mind raced.
Adeline Huang never had feelings for people, and this was just out of the ordinary and so sudden for her. She had just barely admitted feelings for another this morning, and now she has to face said crush?
This was her own personal hell.
She really didn't know how to go about this.
For the first time in forever, and just did not know how to handle a situation, or what to even do with herself.
"Are we good? Can we go sit?" Ollie snapped her back into reality with his questions. "Earth to Adeline?"
"Okay." She blurted. "I'm good."
"Are you sure?" The boy quirked a brow.
"Never. Better." Her teeth gritted.
Rolling his eyes and huffing out a breath, Ollie shook his head before finally letting go of her shoulders and dropping his arms to his side. Proceeding to glance back over at the table, he continued to motion for Adeline to follow him as he finally made his way toward their friends.
Following behind slowly, the debate captain took a couple more breaths of reassurance, telling herself to be normal and act normal.
Do not make it obvious.
Well, it was obvious for everyone since everyone at the table knew what happened.
Thanks Gen. Thanks Kimi.
This was going to be painful.
As if time was going in slow motion, Ollie took the vacant spot between Paul and Joslyn, leaving only one spot available.
Beside Genevieve...
But across Paul.
Fucks sake.
Internally cursing at her friend, although either spots were terrible on their own, she quickly took the seat on the bench in front of the blonde, not trying to do anything too out of the ordinary.
Keeping to herself, she thought that maybe if she didn't say, look at, or interact with anyone-Everything would be fine.
"Adeline?..." Gen quirked a brow, nearly startling her.
"Hm? Oh-Hi." Adeline smiled, finally giving a brief glance at everyone at the table-Paul included-who was now just staring at her. "What?"
"I asked how your day has been?" Joslyn spoke up, clearly shifting uncomfortably now that Ollie was sat beside her.
"Oh." She said awkwardly, pulling her headphones and book out of her bag. "My day's been fine." Her words came out very quietly as she was clearly avoiding to gaze at the area in front of her.
Avoiding Paul's gaze.
"Right..." Gen nodded. "What do you have for lunch?" She asked in attempts to spark up a conversation.
"Didn't have time to pack anything." Adeline's voice was nearly shaky, but not to the point that it was easily recognizable. "Will probably grab something from the cafeteria before I go to class."
"Want an apple?" Paul spoke up, offering the red fruit that he grabbed from his school bag.
Staring at the offer in front of her, she glanced up and looked him in the eyes before softly smiling.
"I do actually...thanks." She replied. Finally acknowledging the boy in front of her-and now that she did that, it made her feel a little better.
Perhaps she could make it through this lunch period alive.
Grabbing the apple from his hand, their fingers slightly grazed each other's, quite literally causing Adeline to shut down.
But, she had to thug it out.
"So-mate." Kimi spoke up, making the debate captain finally pull away and grab the apple firmly. "Are you sitting with us for good now or...?"
"Yeah.." Paul replied as he looked around awkwardly. "Kinda got dumped and cheated on so..."
"Who told you that you were allowed to just sit with us again?" Joslyn snickered, just purposefully giving the blonde a hard time.
"Okay-I'll leave." He began to playfully pack up his things, making everyone laugh.
"It's good to have you back, mate." Ollie interrupted Paul's petty performance with a cheeky smile, reaching behind Joslyn to pat the blonde on the back, but in result, his arm also grazed the tan skinned girl's lower back, causing her to flinch.
"Thanks, Ollie."
Continuing to put her headphones on, Adeline opened her book and began to read away as she bit into the apple Paul provided her.
Refusing to glance up as she felt his hard stare on her from time to time, she just kept her eyes on the page.
Well, that was until Genevieve flicked her thigh later on.
"HM?" She startled Adeline. Causing the girl to look up as she removed one side of her headphones. "What?-" She asked before Gen was quick to point at two bodies walking away, soon recognizing the back of Joslyn and Ollie's head.
"Oh my god." The debate captain completely pulled her headphones down. "OH MY GOD." Her eyes bulged out of her head, glancing at Gen in shock as the two had wide grins on their face.
"Are they gonna talk?" Adeline quietly asked as she received a nod in response.
"They're gonna bonk." Genevieve said proudly, causing the debate captain next to her to roll her eyes.
"You guys still say bonk?" Paul glanced up in confusion. A smirk playing at his lips as he ate soup from his thermos.
"Just Gen." Adeline replied unamused.
"It's funny!" The girl defended. "Like, bonk you. You bonk, I bonk-You guys almost bonked-or-NO! Well...Like. Okay sorry, I didn't mean to-Oh my god-"
"Please stop talking." Adeline was horrified at this point. Paul sitting in an awkward silence as Kimi sucked on the insides of his cheeks.
Fuck.
"I'm sorry." Gen apologized with pure guilt laced in her voice as she covered her mouth in shock.
With tensions rising, Adeline felt herself get hot.
God damnit, Gen.
Pulling her headphones off from around her neck, the Huang got quickly stored them away before finally glancing forward to see Paul's hard stare melting into her skin. Quickly looking away, Adeline looked over at Genevieve who was now lost in a conversation with Kimi, probably still embarrassed for the words that she let slip her mouth.
"Uhh-I'm gonna get going." She tapped Gen's shoulder, causing her friend to turn around and raise her brows. "Hm?" The girl questioned as Adeline's voice was very quiet.
"I'm gonna go head to class." She whispered. "So, I'lll
see you later."
"I hope you know the bonking mishap was an accident and I really didn't mean to slip up and-"
"Gen." Adeline stopped her. "It's okay." She took a deep breath. "I'll see you later, yeah?" The debate captain continued to get up from her spot on the bench and walk away.
"Wait, Adeline!" Paul followed after her. "Are you going to class?" He asked.
"Uhh-" She didn't expect him to tag along.
"Wanna go together?" He suggested.
"I was gonna see Vettel first actually..." Adeline swallowed thickly. "Kinda on the opposite side of campus from Chemistry-so I don't think you'd wanna come."
"Well, too bad he isn't here today." Paul nearly laughed. "Just a substitute in his classroom at the moment."
"Oh." She now felt stuck. "Uhm."
"You can say no, it's fine." The blonde boy shrugged.
"Oh-no!" She shook her head, soon catching herself from reacting too broadly. "We can go together, I don't mind, it's just that-"
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I just-I don't know." Adeline was just dumbfounded. She's never been this speechless and nervous over something. "We can go to class together."
"Didn't you wanna grab something to eat from the cafeteria first?" He quirked a brow and pointed behind with his thumb.
"Uh. No." She shook her head. "The apple was fine."
"Right." Paul nodded and looked down at her. "Now another question." He cleared his throat, causing her to quirk a brow as she realized that he was kind of getting serious.
"Are we ever going to talk about it?"
"Shit." Adeline mumbled under her breath and teared herself away from his gaze.
"Not right now." She shook her head. "There's still a lot of things for me to think about and-just reflect."
"I get it." He stored his hands into his blazer pockets. "But can I please let you know something?"
"I'd rather not know." She quickly declined. "We can have a talk about it eventually-but just not yet."
"Of course." Paul nodded as he took a deep breath.
"Did you still wanna walk to class together?" Adeline continued to let the offer stand as he now just shook his head.
"It's okay." The blonde insisted. "I'll just see you in class." He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Right," Adeline nodded, her voice curt. "See you around then." She quickly pivoted on her heel and made a beeline for the classroom she was headed to, her pace brisk and determined.
She didn't look back once.
Inside, her mind was a whirl of anxiety and unease. What on earth did he have to say? She tried to dismiss the thought. "Whatever. Just don't think about it," she muttered to herself.
In her haste, she was oblivious to her surroundings. She failed to notice a couple of her debate teammates waving at her, as well as Dino and Maya, who observed her hurried pace with curiosity.
Upon entering Mr. Wolff's chemistry class, Adeline was immediately summoned to his desk. He had a request for her.
"You were just the student I was looking for!"
"Oh, Yeah? What's up?" She responded, taking a deep breath. Her heart was still pounding from her encounter with Paul.
"Adeline, I need you to tutor someone."
"Oh!" She nodded. Wiping away beads of sweat from her forehead as she adjusted the bag strap that sat on her shoulder. "Yeah, of course!"
"This student needs to have a passing grade by the end of this semester or else he is fucked." The man explained with a devilish grin. "Right now we're sitting at a very low failing grade."
"Right-" She scratched the side of her cheek. "I've tutored loads of students before, had them understand the subject in no time." Adeline felt okay with the task.
"Who is it, may I ask?"
"Paul Aron."
