SETTING HER PHONE DOWN before rubbing her palms across her face, Adeline sat up in bed and glanced around her dark room with tired eyes. Stretching in place before standing up to open her blackout curtains, she braced herself for bright impact as she shut her eyes to let light into her room.
"Ugh." The girl grumbled to herself as the sun light hit her.
Usually she'd just go back to sleep when she's feeling unwell since she didn't have to go to school until much later in the morning, and considering she was still recovering from a brutal hangover, it felt ten times worse.
Unfortunately for her, the odds were not in her favor as Ollie requested they meet and have a talk at the usual cafe they would hang at with their friends-well, they actually haven't hung out there in a while, but still.
Proceeding to get ready for the day, her outfit was easy to pick out as she only had to briefly steam her school issues uniform.
Since she showered the night before, Adeline went ahead and did a light face of makeup, tying her hair into two pigtail braids that she tied off with two thin white ribbons.
After throwing on her black skirt and white button up, the debate captain tied her brown and white striped tie, soon putting on her brown blazer.
Now noticing how cloudy it was outside, Adeline grumbled to herself as a rainy day was most likely to occur, causing her to rummage through the drawers of her room in search of fleece knit tights to put on, along with socks since she didn't like the look of just tights and her mary janes.
Finally finishing up her morning routine, she quickly gathered the last few things she needed, throwing them into her school bag before grabbing her car keys and heading downstairs.
Eventually making it outside, Adeline took no time to get in her car and begin the short drive to the nearby cafe that she grew to love and hold near and dear to her heart.
Arriving to the cafe, she parked her car and immediately noticed the familiar brunette had arrived at the same time as her.
"Ollie!" She called out from across the street, grabbing his attention.
Quickly looking both ways before crossing, Adeline took no time to approach her friend who probably needed someone right now-She was unsure of what happened, but regardless, she was going to be there for him.
Like always.
"Thank you for meeting with me." He huffed a breath as she approached him. The two now standing near the entrance of the cafe and bakery.
"Of course. You alright?" She questioned as he let out a deep exhale, noticing his under eyes and how dark they were.
"I'll get into it when we're inside... but right now-this may be an odd request." Ollie nearly laughed.
"Hm?"
"Can I have a hug?" He asked. "I need one right now."
Nearly frowning at his request, Adeline let out a laugh before opening her arms and bringing him into a tight embrace. Although they've been close friends since they can remember, the two never really exchanged this much affectionate touch.
But a hug here and there never hurt anyone.
Feeling him relax under her hold, Adeline pat his back as he continued to hug her. She was a little shorter than him so he was hunched over, but nonetheless, it was a comforting hug that he wanted.
"Let's go in?" Adeline pulled away, quirking a brow as Ollie thinned his lips.
"Yeah." He nodded. "You're gonna think I'm absolutely ridiculous once you find out why I'm acting this way." He groaned.
"Probably." She playfully agreed. "Come on." Her head motioned for the entrance, continuing to grab the handle and open the door for him.
Promptly entering the cafe, the two were quick to get served and arranged to a table that sat in front of the large window of the restaurant.
"So-do tell what's wrong." Adeline took no time to get the conversation started, causing Ollie to glance up from his menu.
"Don't you wanna look at the menu first?"
"Stop stalling-I already know what I want." She slid the menu to the side and raised her brows.
"Right. Strawberry crepes." Ollie formed a thin line with his lips before awkwardly laughing.
"Come on, I need you to speak up. This is hard to watch." Adeline chuckled into the palm of her hand as she propped her elbow on the table and listened intently, waiting for the boy to pour out his thoughts.
"It's just-" He paused. "Okay, you might already know, because she most likely already told you." His words caused the debate captain to quickly piece together what this whole thing was about.
"Oh, Ollie." She snickered.
"Adeline, please." The boy sighed before looking her in the eyes. "It's been a little rough-I just don't know what to think."
"Let's just get straight into it." Adeline sighed with a subtle smirk. "Do you like her?"
"Yes." Ollie exhaled, causing the girl in front of him to smile wide, leaning into her seat in satisfaction.
"About time you admit it." She snickered.
"What?"
"I don't know how you and Joslyn have missed it all these years, we've all been wanting it to happen naturally for you guys, but we never thought it'd take this fucking long." Adeline leaned back into her seat and crossed her arms.
"What are you talking about?" Ollie was still lost.
"You and Joslyn have literally been into each other since we were-I don't know? Nine years old? And there was no denying, idiot."
"Joslyn likes me?" He raised his brows in pure confusion.
"Are you fucking brain dead?"
"You're bluffing, mate. There's no way." Ollie grumbled into his hands. "Adeline, I'm so sure I've screwed things over by kissing her."
"You and her are the exact same, this is so painful." The girl tugged on her braids in annoyance. "Well, at least she admitted to having a crush on you, it took way longer on your part-considering you're just now admitting it."
"Did you see the way she refused to look at me yesterday in Gen's kitchen?!"
"Maybe it was from all the awkward glances you kept giving her-couldn't have made it more obvious, dingus." Adeline groaned.
"How are you sure she likes me?" Ollie asked. And with that question, Adeline reached forward and flicked his forehead.
"She's one of my closest friends. No shit I'd know these things." She said with a condescending tone since his question was practically the dumbest thing she's ever heard.
"You're not lying to me?"
"Why would I lie about this?-Goodness! Ollie! Just accept the fact that she likes you!" The girl stared him down. "I wasn't sure if you liked her due to all the mixed signals you've given, but genuinely, it was still not hard to miss that you liked her back-And I don't understand why she didn't do anything about it.
As he was about to speak up once again, the duo was interrupted by a waitress bringing them glasses of water and asking if they were ready.
Quickly ordering their food, Adeline asked for her usual crepes as Ollie requested he have an English breakfast. Without another word, the woman smiled wide before leaving the two be, continuing to get their orders to the kitchen.
"Joslyn seems like she hates me most of the time." Ollie spoke up which made Adeline roll her eyes as she sipped her water.
"She bullies you-it's her way of affection and flirting. How have you missed the signs?" The debate captain set her glass down.
"I don't know, she's literally thrown a dictionary at my head, so that kinda left me to only assume."
"Right." Adeline bit down a laugh as she thought back to the instance from two summers ago.
"So, how should I go about this?" Ollie asked.
"Well, what are you trying to gain from this?" She quickly deflected his question with another.
"I want to take her on a date." He paused. "And eventually ask her to be my girlfriend..."
"This is so digesting." Adeline took a deep breath. "I'm getting butterflies for her. This is so."
"Alright, come on." Ollie laughed.
"Well, if you want to get somewhere-I say talk to her as soon as you can today." The girl proceeded to give him advice. "I already told her to talk to you because-well, actually I won't get too into it, but a talk is definitely in the works for the both of you." She paused.
"That's if the both of you don't bail. So please, I'm begging. Do not do that."
"I genuinely can't believe she's had a crush on me this whole time. And I'm just now realizing I've had a crush on her too." The boy took a comforting breath.
"The most clueless person I know, it's actually just sad." Adeline playfully sighed.
"The thought of ruining everything and also realizing my feelings for Joslyn have genuinely kept me up all night." The brunette grumbled into the palms of his hand before running it through his hair. "I'm exhausted, mate."
"I don't doubt a plethora of naps during class today are in order." She replied, taking a sip of her water.
"Most definitely."
As the morning went on, Adeline and Ollie continued to chat about what the boy should do, regarding his newly confirmed feelings for Joslyn.
It was a sweet moment, the two hadn't spent one on one time together in ages. They both needed this.
Ollie was her first friend, and she was his. They can't imagine what it would be like without the other.
Sometimes through all the banter and play fights, it feels nice to just sit down and have a genuine talk. A well rounded friendship like this will genuinely last a lifetime, and Adeline couldn't be more than grateful for someone like Ollie.
But she wouldn't admit it that often.
Once they received their food, they delved further into their conversation as they ate, soon bringing up the events of Gen's birthday party.
"So-I've heard some things." Ollie took a bite of his toast as he stared down Adeline who was munching on the strawberries toppled on her plate.
"Yeah? What's up?" She continued to sip her drink.
"Kimi told me that you and Paul almost kissed."
And with that statement, Adeline choked on her water.
Practically drowning her breathing tubes, she coughed out the liquid all over her plate, completely caught off guard by the boy in front of her, not expecting any of those words to escape his mouth.
"Are you okay?!" Ollie reached forward to hand her napkins.
"I'm gonna kill you." She panted before gritting her teeth, other cafe guests turning to stare at the duo that had caused a small ruckus.
"Sensitive topic?" He asked cluelessly.
"Do you choose to be this stupid or something?!-I don't understand." Adeline wiped her face as her eyes teared up from the choking.
"I just wanted to see if it was true. I thought Kimi was bluffing, honestly." Ollie threw his arms up in defense. "Your reaction tells me enough."
"I'm gonna kill that Italian freak." The debate captain threw her napkin onto a vacant spot on the table. "Can never fucking trust him with anything."
"It's okay! Your secret is safe with me." The brunette assured her.
"I never wanted it to be in your custody to begin with!" Adeline said through an aggressively hushed whisper.
"So why didn't you guys kiss?" Ollie pressed for answers.
"We are not getting into this conversation."
"You like him, don't you?"
"What is up with you guys and thinking I like Paul!?" Adeline furrowed her eyebrows. "Is there something that I am missing?"
"Well, you don't see the way you look at him." Ollie shrugged before continuing to dig into his breakfast.
"I don't look at him in any way?"
"You don't know that." He took a bite of his food.
"I-" She was at a loss of words. Adeline was just confused-completely unsure about how she felt.
And, deep down... she kinda did have an answer.
But her coping mechanism was to deflect and deny.
"Come on." Ollie set his fork down, forming a fist over his mouth as he swallowed the rest of his food. "Talk to Ollie."
"I do not want to talk to Ollie." Adeline shook her head.
"There's something on your mind. I know you too well to know you have something brewing up there."
"You're the worst."
"Come on! I know you have some unsaid words that you need to get off your chest." He insisted.
"I can't." Adeline rejected his offer before grabbing another strawberry from her plate.
"Why not?" The brunette quirked his brow.
"Because I haven't even admitted these things to myself yet." She confessed. Her heart dropping as the words escaped her mouth.
"And I assume these things involve feelings for...?" He stared intently before receiving a slow nod from Adeline in response.
"It's all confusing to me because I just..." The Huang girl paused. "I haven't even said any of this to Gen or Jos-so please bear with me."
"Take your time, I'm listening." Ollie happily took a bite of his egg, waiting for the girl to find her train of thought.
"I guess there is something I feel... but I never even considered it was a romantic feeling? I guess you can say." Adeline admitted. "Been busy with college applications and debate-all my classes, you know? Haven't really had the time to just sit with my thoughts and feelings."
"So, you like him?"
"I think so..." She whispered. Nodding slowly as her eyes trailed off to God knows where. She couldn't believe she was actually admitting these feelings.
"But I don't want anything serious. It's just a small... crush." She said with a panged feeling at the back of her neck.
"Why not?" Ollie questioned.
"You really can't tell anyone." Adeline took a deep breath. "Not Joslyn, Not Gen-Nobody."
"My lips are sealed."
"I've only been applying to universities in America."
"Oh." The brunette briefly froze, not expecting this confession from her. "Really?"
"Yeah." She nodded with slight shame. "Vettel has been helping me out." Adeline said quietly. "American Ivy Leagues have a lot of good offers for what I want to do for my major."
"So... if you get in to any.. or when you get into them." Ollie paused, putting the pieces together. "You'd be moving?" His question was clearly laced with a tone of sadness.
"That's my plan.. yeah." She took a deep breath.
"Well-I'm proud of you." The boy said through a weak smile. "It's painful to think that you might be gone in a year or so, but this-this is good." He nodded, trying to be supportive of his best friend.
"What are your top schools?"
"It sounds ridiculous but, Columbia." She paused. "Yale.."
"Oh, wow." Ollie listened closely.
"Brown... Berkeley-which isn't necessarily an Ivy League but it's still a good school, and Harvard." She paused.
"And a couple more."
"That's really cool, Ads." The boy smiled. "I think you've got a good chance of getting into lots of them."
"You think?"
"Number one in our class? International debate champion? Other ridiculously nerdy and cool titles you have." Ollie laughed and teased. "You're without a doubt getting into a majority of those schools."
"Thank you." Adeline took a satisfied deep breath. "I know it's a lot to think about... it's a lot for me to think about."
"All of us will support you no matter what." Ollie explained. "But you know, you'll have to tell them eventually."
"I know... just not yet."
"I'll be there beside you whenever you do." He was supportive. "So-now I assume you don't want anything serious because you'd be leaving next Fall?"
"Correct." Adeline nodded.
"What's the harm in having fun for now?" Ollie suggested.
"I've never been in a relationship and I'm scared of getting too attached." She huffed a breath.
"And Paul?" Her eyes softened at the thought of him, feeling things she hadn't even allowed herself to feel and right now, it just felt good.
"If there was anything that were to happen between us-Oh, God." The girl groaned at the overwhelming thought and just the underlying fact that she's admitting this out loud.
"I wouldn't want to leave him..."
"You liiiikkeee him." Ollie tried to lighten the mood and smirked happily, causing Adeline to smile wide but roll her eyes in annoyance
"You're such an idiot." She laughed into her hands. "I just poured my heart out and now you're just being twelve years old."
"I genuinely appreciate that you've opened up to me." The boy turned serious for a moment. "I'm here to talk whenever you need it and I'm glad we've had this conversation-as we admit our feelings for our friends." He laughed.
"Ridiculous." Adeline said through embarrassment.
"We'll be okay." Ollie smiled a comforting smile.
"We will." She mirrored the same expression before they fell into a comfortable silence.
"Question." The debate captain spoke up once again.
"What's up?"
"Not that it would matter since I wouldn't do anything about it, but-Do you know if Paul..." She paused. "You know?"
"I've got no clue. He's a complicated one." Ollie admitted. "But I do know that he thinks you're the prettiest among our entire group."
"Over Joslyn and Genevieve is insane." She was taken aback. "Ugh, why do I like an absolute toolbox..." She grumbled into her hands once again. "He used to get at anything that can breathe-him thinking I'm pretty practically means nothing."
"Why do you like him exactly? It's kind of unexpected but now that I think of it-It makes sense." The brunette laughed.
"I don't know." Adeline shrugged. "Well.. through the years he slowly got better at being a decent person." She continued. "And over this past summer, he and I got closer.."
"Right."
"Then comes the entire Vivienne situation." She grimaced at the thought. "I spent way more one on one time with him, I helped him become a decent person, and I guess this current version of Paul..." Adeline paused.
"It got me."
"You fixed him!" Ollie joked, causing her to roll her eyes.
"I guess I did." She nodded. "I fixed him."
