✷ 022: Debrief.
I CAN FIX HIM ! by KissLeclerc
November 13, 2022 # "WHAAAAATT?"
WAKING UP DISORIENTED, Adeline glanced around the familiar room that belonged to her best friend Genevieve, only to see Joslyn sound asleep beside her. With the sun shining ever so brightly, her eyes squinted as the light burned her head.
Hungover to the max.
"Fucks sake." She rubbed her eyes before feeling around the bed in search of her phone.
"Move more, and I might kill you." Joslyn grumbled in her sleep, causing Adeline to lightly kick the girl with her foot.
"Get up, I think you're on my phone." The debate captain grumbled into the palm of her hand.
"A please would be nice." The girl beside her didn't budge. Her eyes still closed as she tried to continue her slumber.
"Please." Adeline groaned.
Without another word, Joslyn rolled over, and as expected, Adeline saw her familiar pink phone case covered with strawberries. "Thank you." She mumbled to her friend before picking the device up to check the time.
"Jos, it's 4PM." She immediately groaned into her hands, causing the girl to suddenly sit up from her spot in bed to stare in confusion.
"Actually?!" She gasped as Adeline nodded groggily, rubbing her eyes in hopes to wake herself up more before showing the time displayed on her phone.
"My head is fucking killing me." She set her home down and placed her hands on the sides of her head, bringing her knees up to huddle herself into a ball-Kinda.
Before Joslyn could add on to her statement, the duo were interrupted by noises downstairs that had caught them by surprise.
But now that they thought about it.
Where was Genevieve?
But honestly, she was probably cleaning with Kimi downstairs, considering her parents were arriving later that night.
"Should we go help..." Joslyn glanced at Adeline who really didn't want to, but the good person in her felt like they had to.
"We should." She sighed, stretching in place before attempting to get up. "After I pop a Tylenol or six-because holy shit."
"I have some." The tan skinned girl yawned, reaching for the floor beside her to pick up a bag, but struggling to find it. Continuing to rummage through her purse once she grabbed it, Joslyn soon handed over a small canister of pain killers.
"I shall take these once I acquire water." Adeline grasped the tiny bottle into her palm before officially getting out of bed.
Examining her appearance in the large closet mirror that sat in Genevieve's room, Adeline stared at her outfit, questioning how she even managed to change from her little corset top and mini skirt into a large t-shirt and biker shorts.
Come to think of it, she hadn't even remembered much of the previous night's events.
But that's how you know it was wonderful.
Well, besides the part where she... you know.
"Dude-What even happened last night?" Joslyn appeared from behind, questioning her existence as she stared at her appearance as well.
"I couldn't even tell you." Adeline sighed. "Come on, I need some water."
Striding toward the door, the debate captain was quick to exit the room with her friend following behind. As she approached the ground floor, Adeline noticed the place was nearly spotless.
No trace of a party anywhere.
Kimi and Genevieve did good.
"GOOD!-You're up!" Gen suddenly appeared from the kitchen entry way.
"Too loud!" Adeline covered her ears and closed her eyes in pain. "Please Shhhhh..." She whispered.
"Water is in the kitchen." The girl pointed behind her. "Take your Tylenol and then maybe help them in the backyard... please?"
"How long have you been up, and how are you so okay?" Joslyn crossed her arms, questioning her friend as her bsck was hunched over in confusion.
She and Adeline both looked completely out of it. Hair a mess, clothes wrinkled, and under eyes darker than ever...
They've definitely had better days.
"Been up since 10:00." Gen replied. "Took some Tylenol and woke up Kimi and Ollie to help me out."
"Ollie's still here?" Joslyn was quick to ask, but as if it was just the right timing, the familiar brunette appeared from the back patio doorway.
"Okay-Kimi and I have practically finished, but he's still out there cleaning." He said through a panting breath. "And sorry that this is so sudden, but I forgot I need to watch my siblings tonight, so I need to leave soon." The boy explained.
"You can go ahead-Don't worry about it." Gen shrugged it off as Adeline watched the two talk, proceeding to serve herself a glass of water in order to take the pain meds Joslyn gave her.
"You've been a big help!"
"Of course!-Wicked party, mate! I had loads of fun." He smiled a subtle grin before briefly glancing at Joslyn, proceeding to make a face that was not hard to miss.
"So, yeah-I'll see you guys tomorrow." He was quick to finish his farewell, glancing at Joslyn once again who was clearly avoiding eye contact.
"Bye...?" Genevieve quirked a brow, sharing a short exchange of looks with Adeline who also picked up on the awkward interaction.
Waving another quick goodbye, Ollie went ahead and grabbed his keys from his pocket, soon leaving the girls among themselves in the kitchen like before.
"Right-so, what the hell was that?" Gen took no time to look at Joslyn. Propping her arms against the marble countertop to lean against it.
"And I'm not taking 'nothing' for an answer. I've been close to the both of you long enough to know that, that was odd." The girl crossed her arms and looked at Adeline for backup.
"Yeah..." She had already taken her Tylenol. "Do you have anything to share with the class...?"
"I-" Joslyn's lips formed a thin line. "Well." She slightly blushed.
"SPILL." Gen was eager to know as she repeatedly slapped her palms on the counter. "DO TELL."
"Ollie and I kissed last night."
"WAHHHHAAAATT???" Adeline's reaction was fast as she gasped in shock at Joslyn's words. "OW-MY HEAD." She rubbed the side of it. "BUT WHAT?!"
"EXCUSE ME?!?" Gen reacted at the same time. "OH MY GOD? YOU'RE KIDDING?"
"Not even once... happened a couple times.."
"HOLY FUCK!?" Her friend continued. "WHAT, HOW, WHEN, WHY?! HELLO?"
"STOPPP!" Joslyn covered her face in embarrassment as Adeline was clearly just in non verbal disbelief at this point, staring with her eyes wide open in shock.
"WELL?? DO GIVE DETAILS?" Genevieve went ahead and took a seat at her kitchen island.
"It's really not even much-Like." Joslyn briefly sat in a deep thought. "We were really drunk, we danced together and it just-Ohhhh my god." She got butterflies at just the mere thought of it.
"Oh, I'm sick." Adeline groaned into the palm of her hand. "FINALLY-Damn."
"Okay. Shut." Joslyn held up a finger to stop her. "Anyways. While we were dancing... he's getting really close and personal..."
"AAAAAHHHHHH." Gen squealed in excitement. "Oh my god, Oh my god." She screamed into the palm of her hand. "THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL?"
"WAIT! IM NOT FINISHED." Joslyn smiled as she talked about the events of the party. "He grabs me and we're like... staring at each other and OH MY GOD."
"Oh, this is crazy." Adeline smiled wide at her friend who had finally achieved something she had been pining after for years.
"He bends down and kisses me-Like guys. I was so dumbfounded."
"The world can end now. We have been PRAYING for times like these." Gen brought her hands together and made a prayer gesture. "JOS, THATS SO BEAUTIFUL."
"I'm shocked you guys didn't see any of it?!" She quirked a brow. "We were going at it like-Okay let me stop."
"Riiight... Yeah." Adeline rubbed the back of her neck. "Well, what's gonna happen to the both of you now?"
"Don't make me think about it." Joslyn sighed. "Did you see the way he acted earlier?"
"He's probably just in shock. You guys are gonna have to talk about it eventually." Gen shrugged. "He finally grew the balls to kiss you."
"Oh, shut up. He was definitely just drunk." Joslyn shook her head. "It most likely meant nothing to him and he's just awkward that he kissed his best friend." She shrugged. "As much as I liked it, I just know it's going to screw things over."
"If I had the ability to throw you in front of oncoming traffic right now, I so would." Adeline grumbled. "Why do you hate yourself so much?"
"Excuse me-"
"Can you please accept the fact that Ollie has very much had a crush on you for years?" The debate captain quirked a brow.
"Dude, shut up." Joslyn rolled her eyes.
"HE KISSED YOU?-Multiple times??" Gen furrowed her eyebrows. "Drunk or not, I know he did that with a sober mind... if that makes sense."
"I've known Ollie my whole life, he was just awkward because he's Ollie." Adeline sighed, glancing at her best friend who seemed to be in a dilemma.
"What do I do at school tomorrow?" Joslyn bit down on her manicure.
"Grow a pair and talk to him?"
"Adeline-Please." She groaned at her the girl that was not having any of her bullshit, but instead encouraging her to chase after this newfound opportunity.
"Discuss what that kiss was, what it meant, and figure out where you guys go from there. You cannot hide from him forever." Adeline sighed.
"And what if the kiss meant nothing and he wants to just stay friends?" Joslyn questioned.
"You'll never know until you talk about it!"
"Right." The tan skinned girl huffed a breath. "Okay."
Sitting still as she collected her own thoughts, Joslyn groaned into the palms of her hands as Genevieve and Adeline shared another knowing look. They were happy something finally happened between the two, but they knew this was about to be a painful week knowing how stubborn and avoidant their friend is.
"So-anything happen with you guys last night?" She finally spoke up, questioning her friends about their party experience.
"Gen?" Her eyebrow lifted with a cheeky smirk.
"Everything you're probably assuming right now, it happened and I'm not getting into detail because it's nothing new." The belated birthday girl threw her arms up in defense, refusing to share anything about her and her boyfriend.
"Right..." Joslyn nodded before looking at Adeline "You?" She asked. "I can't be the only one that had some action last night." The girl laughed.
"Nothing." Adeline was quick to shake her head as some of the events of last night began to finally pour back into her memory. She could've sworn what happened with Paul was just a dream.
Because what?
"Just drank and danced honestly." She shrugged as Joslyn and Genevieve noticed her left eyebrow twitch, which they knew was a sign that she was lying.
"Okay, spill." Joslyn leaned forward and took a seat at the kitchen island where they were all debriefing and discussing.
"What?" The debate captain quirked a brow as she reached for a tangerine that sat in a fruit bowl.
"Don't even-We know you're lying." Gen sighed. "Who did you bonk heads with." The girl crossed her arms. "About time by the way." She joked, causing Joslyn to snicker.
"OH!" Adeline raised her brows. "Right! Yeah. Bonked heads with nobody, you freak." She said unamused.
"Okay, but something did happen?" Joslyn stared.
"I guess you could say that..." Adeline mumbled, genuinely begging the gods to not let her get into this.
"Alright-What did Paul say." Gen questioned as she rested her chin in the palm of her hand, the girl's elbow still propped on the counter.
"Excuse me?"
"We know it has something to do with Paul... come on! Don't be shy!" Joslyn smiled.
"Right..." Adeline nodded. "Uhh-OH! WAIT." She gasped. "Oh my god-Viv and him broke up."
"WHAAAT?" Gen gasped. "IT'S A BIRTHDAY MIRACLE." She threw her arms up and cheered.
"NO SHOT?" Joslyn gawked. "THIS IS BEAUTIFUL?"
"She cheated though..."
"Oh, wait we need to kill her." Gen stopped cheering.
"Yeah-He and I talked last night and apparently she's been seeing another guy-and she just broke up with him." Adeline explained as her two friends shared a look.
"Oh! What were you guys doing talking?" Gen quirked a brow. "Come to think of it! I hadn't seen either of you for a good hour!"
"Okay, come on now." Adeline sighed. "Big party! You were going to lose sight of friends for-"
"I saw you go out to the front yard last night..." Joslyn cut her off. "When I went to look for Gen out in the patio, I only found Ollie and he came back in with me." She paused. "But I noticed you heading straight for the front door."
"Okay so thank me for leaving you alone with Ollie?" The debate captain tried to deflect Joslyn's conspiracies.
"Thank you, gorgeous." She smiled. "But... did anything happen when you were out in the front?" She questioned.
"And you can't lie-We know when you lie."
Staring at her best friends as she peeled her tangerine, she knew she had to fess up about what happened. They knew her too well for her to even slightly lie about what happened.
And she really did not want to make it bigger than it already was.
Telling them would just be a disaster...
"Earth to Adeline!" Gen clapped.
"Huh?"
"So, what happened on my front porch??"
"I.." Adeline sighed. "I ran into Paul." She shrugged.
"OHHHHHH..." Joslyn was locked in and ready for this conversation. "And?"
"And-nothing!"
"LIAR!" Gen pointed and raised her voice. "YOU GUYS BONKED."
"STOP SAYING BONKED. WE ARE NOT 13 ANYMORE." The debate captain groaned.
"So you guys bonked?" Joslyn eagerly stared.
"DUDE-" Adeline groaned before throwing an orange peel at her friend.
"Stop stalling. What HAPPENED?" Gen was practically ripping her hair out as she was at the edge of her seat. "Something big probably went down if you're this avoidant about it."
"We just talked! Kinda made up? In a way?" Adeline confessed. "And then he-we?" She tried to find the right words. "He kind of.. or like-We?"
"HE? YOU? WE? GO." Joslyn was practically forcing it out of her.
"We were about to kiss."
"OHHH MY FUCKING GOD?!" She jumped out of her seat and began pacing. "HOLY SHIT?!"
"ADELINE JADE HUANG?!" Gen's jaw was practically on the floor as Joslyn continued to run laps around the kitchen island causing Adeline to set her tangerine down and hide her face into the palm of her hands.
"SO DID YOU GUYS KISS?"
"I pulled away and bailed." Adeline said with embarrassment.
"YOU WHAT?!" Joslyn immediately stopped and stared in shock. "YOU HUH?"
"I panicked!-He just got out of a relationship and I don't even like him like that!" The jet black haired girl said in a panic. "I also just don't go around kissing people!"
"Oh, Jak is gonna love this." Gen snickered.
"Excuse me?" Adeline quirked a brow as Joslyn quickly nudged the girl's side. "Bro."
"Why and how is Jak gonna love this?"
"It's nothing." Joslyn shook her head.
"Assholes. SPILL." The debate captain picked her tangerine back up.
"Jak made a group chat with us to share this conspiracy of his... that you like Paul." Gen admitted, which made Joslyn roll her eyes. "He said to never tell her this!"
"Jak Crawford, I'm gonna kill you." Adeline screamed into her hands. "YOU'RE JOKING."
"SO, DO YOU LIKE PAUL?" Joslyn completely ignored her friend as the topic and group chat secrets were just out in the open now.
"NO!" She replied sternly. "I do not like Paul! I never have and I never will!-What did Jak even say to you guys?!"
"Not getting too into detail because he said he already tried to feed these ideas to you but!" Gen cleared her throat, which caused Adeline to think back to her facetime call with him. "He really has a point... I noticed it over the summer."
"Oh, come on." Adeline sighed.
"Gen's right. I noticed it too." Joslyn cut in. "You guys got a lot more closer than any of us would have expected and the start of school really proved it."
"I'm gonna kill myself."
"And, you said we. 'We almost kissed,' so basically that refers to the entire scenario as a two person effort kinda thing." Gen stared knowingly. "You could've said 'he almost kissed me' but you said we!"
"I-"
"Yeah, so I'm right."
"Bro, please stop." Adeline groaned.
"Gen! The backyard is all done." Kimi suddenly came back in, completely sweaty, smelly, and gross looking.
"Oh! Thank you!" She quickly turned in her seat, "You can go ahead and shower, we'll just be down here." The girl smiled and gave her boyfriend a kiss.
"Is everything okay here? Seems a little tense.." Kimi asked with a hint of concern for his girlfriend and two close friends.
"Joslyn and Ollie kissed, and Paul and Adeline almost kissed." His girlfriend completely blurted, causing the other two to gawk in shock.
"DUDE?!" Adeline stared in disbelief.
"WOAH, WOAH, WOAH, MATE." Kimi tried to process what Genevieve had said. "WHAT?"
"I know... it's a lot." Gen placed her hand on his back and rubbed it gently.
"Joslyn and Ollie is not a shock, but YOU AND PAUL?!" He quirked a brow and stared at the girl of the hour.
"DON'T YOU HAVE A SHOWER TO TAKE." Adeline's hands were interlocked with strands of her hair, seeming like she was about to yank it all out, but she obviously refrained.
"Yes! Hold on-I'll be right back. I want to be apart of this conversation." The Italian boy aggressively nodded before abruptly leaving the kitchen.
"I am not waiting for him." Joslyn shook her head.
"I'll just tell him everything when we're alone." Gen shrugged. "Don't worry about it."
"Dude?"
"Why are you shocked? I tell him everything." The girl said in defense. "Well-not everything obviously, but I tell him a lot of things."
"Right." Adeline nodded slowly as she began to eat her fully peeled tangerine.
"Okay, you're not off the hook." The two girls stared at her.
"And you guys aren't either with that little group chat you have with Jak?" The debate captain quirked a brow. "Made specifically to talk about me-behind my back!"
"It's all good things though!" Joslyn defended. "Blame Jak, not us!"
"I blame all of you." She scoffed, tossing a piece of the orange snack into her mouth.
"Would you have kissed him?" Gen asked with a tone of genuine concern. The question making Adeline stay still and think for a moment.
"Is it weird to say that I don't know?"
"No." Joslyn shook her head.
"Okay, well then yeah... I don't know if I would've." Adeline shrugged. "We were both drunk, vulnerable, and alone."
"See. Saying I don't know shows some hesitation, but you also would consider it..." Gen sighed. "You would consider..."
"It-Okay, come on." Adeline sighed in annoyance and frustration, "I'm just confused... maybe touch starved? Guys, I'm lost."
"You guys definitely have feelings for each other."
"What are you talking about, bro." The debate captain grumbled. "You're actually out of your mind."
"I don't know Ads." She shrugged. "There's definitely something."
"Are you gonna talk to him?" Gen asked.
"I-I don't know.." She said once again. Completely lost and unsure of what to do about everything.
"A wise woman once told me to grow a pair and talk things out." Joslyn said with a smirk.
"Okay! This is so different." Adeline defended.
"NUH-UH." She shook her head. "Not even! This is practically the same."
"You and Ollie have been secretly in love with each other for years-You guys finally kissed!" The debate captain dumbed down her friend's dilemma. "Me on the other hand! Me and Paul have been beefing for months, he just got out of a relationship, and we have never ever seen each other in that way-"
"So yes, this is completely different."
"I still think you should talk to him." Joslyn shrugged, completely undermining what her friend had to say. "And we have not been secretly in love-please, shut up."
"You guys are just both idiots." Gen groaned.
"Oh!" Joslyn glanced. "Right."
"Jos, you really need to just grow up and acknowledge that you and Ollie have always had feelings for each other, it's just that neither of you bit the bullet and confessed."
"Gagged." Adeline chuckled as Joslyn glared.
"And you-" Gen paused to stare at the debate captain. "Yeah, I don't know. You and Paul are a complicated mix."
"Ha, thanks." She crossed her arms.
"Jak had a point, you know?" Joslyn went back to the topic of Adeline and Paul-completely avoiding the discussing of herself and Ollie.
"Please don't start." Adeline sighed.
"No, I'm serious!" The tan skinned girl argued.
"She's right. And Jak was right too." Gen butt in. "You might not see it, but you do care about Paul. Way more than you have before."
"Guys, stop." She didn't wanna hear any of it, proceeding to cover her ears and groan.
"You need to listen!" Joslyn argued. "Clearly, there's a lot of unspoken feelings here, you need to genuinely get it together and figure out what it is with Paul because-"
"The irony is insane." Adeline huffed a breath.
"You're useless."
As the late afternoon went on, the trio continued to banter and discuss the previous events of the night before. From more petty drama among their classmates, details to follow regarding Ollie and Joslyn's romantic interactions, Kimi eventually came back and attempted to catch up on what he had missed.
But throughout all of it, Adeline sat in her seat with one gut curdling feeling over taking her entire body.
And that's the thought of Paul.
And wishing she had kissed him.
But, she wasn't gonna tell anyone that.
