✷ 021: Happy Birthday Gen.

I CAN FIX HIM ! by KissLeclerc
November 12, 2022 # "I Admire That."

STARING INTO HER HAND MIRROR, Adeline touched up the final details of her look as she got ready alongside Joslyn in Gen's bedroom, the three anticipating the birthday party that was rumored to be the biggest function of the year yet.

Gen loved the idea of going out with a bang, so she had her party invites sent out all throughout the school. Open invitations, anyone was welcome as long as you were over the age of 16...

But who was really going to listen to that rule?

"How do I look?" Gen asked aloud, grabbing the attention of her two bestfriends who immediately gawked at her.

"Oh, Kimi is about to-"

"Not if I rip it off you first." Adeline cut Joslyn's comment off with a violating remark of her own, causing the birthday girl to laugh in response.

"So yes? The outfit eats?" She questioned, looking down at herself and the black ensemble she had on with an asymmetrical black lace top, paired with a tight mini skirt.

"It eats, and I'm about to eat you ou-"

"RIGHT!" Gen gasped, staring at Joslyn in shock. "Buy me a drink first! Damn!"

"I'll buy you all the drinks." Joslyn winked as she but on the nail of her index finger with a flirtatious wink.

"I'm here too, I guess." Adeline sighed as she examined her manicure, feeling left out of the chronic flirting.

"Don't get me started with you because we will not be leaving this room fully clothed if we even go there." Gen sighed as she crossed her arms, receiving a chuckle from Joslyn beside her.

"Im down if you're down." Adeline winked before Gen's phone suddenly began to ring. "COCK BLOCK." Joslyn groaned as she caught a glimpse of Kimi's contact.

"Way to ruin the moment." The girl mumbled before answering the incoming call from her boyfriend. "Hello?"

"This couldn't have been sent in a text?" Gen snickered to herself as she spoke with Kimi. "Or I don't know, you guys couldn't come upstairs and knock?"

"Yeah, yeah-okay. We'll be down in a sec. Thank you for helping, you're the best... I love you!" She smiled. "Bye."

"What was that?" Joslyn quirked a brow as Gen's phone call had ended as soon as it even started.

"Kimi being stupid and clingy."

"You say that like you hate it." Adeline smirked knowingly as she gave a brief side eye to her friend.

"Yeah.. gotta love my clingy man." Genevieve laughed. "He was just letting me know he and Ollie finished the final decorations downstairs."

"Beautiful! That's our cue to start drinking." Joslyn raised her arms in the air. "So let's get going." She booked it straight for the door of Gen's bedroom.

Sharing a glance as they watched their best friend walk out without another word, Adeline laughed before interlocking arms with Gen and followed after Joslyn.

Making their way down the stairs, the girls were quick to be met with Ollie and Kimi sharing a few drinks in the kitchen where Joslyn was quick to join the two, pouring a shot of her own.

"No time to waste! Ive been needing a party like this, I am trying to get blacked out." She said proudly.

"Okay, maybe not that far!" Adeline showed some concern.

"Loosen up, mate!" Ollie nudged her side, "Here." He poured her a shot. "Come on!"

"Wait for me! Let's all go at once!" Gen added as Kimi pours a shot for himself and her.

Gathering their little glasses together, Kimi said a small toast for the sake of his girlfriend's birthday before they all clinked shots and immediately downed the strong beverage that was quick to burn their throats.

Laughing in satisfaction, the group shared a couple more shots when the door knocked, causing Ollie to volunteer and attend to whoever arrived.

"MATE!" The group heard the brunette's exclamation. "You're late!" He laughed.

After a few short seconds, Ollie came back with a familiar blonde following after his tail, a few more canisters of drinks stored beneath his arm as he dapped up Kimi, soon giving Gen a brief side hug with a quick birthday greeting, while Adeline refused to even look in his direction.

"Nice of you to finally join us!" Joslyn smiled. "Shocked to see that girlfriend of yours not attached to your hip..." She quirked a brow as Ollie elbowed her side.

"Oh-She's uh.. coming later." He said awkwardly with a shrug as Gen snorted.

"Who said she was invited?"

"It was open invite...?" Kimi looked at his girlfriend in confusion, causing her to glare at him in annoyance.

"Correction! Open invite but Viv is not allowe-"

"Okay! Just drink up, mate!" Ollie interrupted with an awkward laugh as he slid over a shot for Paul.

Continuing on with the evening, the friend group pre games until the first hour of the party arrived. Within no time, people had showed up to Gen's front door with the most electric energy imaginable.

As the night went on, Adeline took aux over the loud speaker that sat in the living room. Feeling a little tipsy as the pre game was a lot for her as is, the debate captain clung onto Joslyn's arm for a sense of comfort and security.

"Have you seen Gen?" Joslyn asked over the loud music as Adeline shook her head. "Last time I saw her, she and Kimi were playing cup pong in the back yard! That was like 30 minutes ago." She explained.

"Come with me to check? You don't have to." Her friend offered as she was quick to decline. "Go ahead! I'm gonna get another drink." Adeline smiled.

"Okay, be right back! Stay safe." Joslyn brought her friend in for a cheek kiss before waving her off.

Parting ways, Adeline went straight for the kitchen where different arrays of drinks sat, the girl ran into Ollie who was downing more shots with familiar faces.

"Ciao, Maya!" Adeline greeted after grabbing another seltzer from a cooler.

"Adeline, hello!" The blonde brought her in for a hug. "You doing okay?" She asked out of courtesy.

"Never better." The debate captain smiled. "You guys having fun?" She asked as Ollie seemed completely done for already.

"Never. Better." He repeated her previous words, sweat dripping down the side of his face. "Do you guys want to dance?" The boy questioned as Adeline and Maya shared a look before accepting.

Smiling broadly at their agreement, Ollie suddenly grabbed Dino by his shirt and headed straight for the dance floor, where Adeline and Maya soon joined them.

The familiar beat of a Travis Scott song filled the air, and the dance floor quickly became packed. Bodies pressed against one another, leaving no space for personal comfort.

As the crowd clashed, shouting the lyrics obnoxiously, Adeline struggled to enjoy herself. Being on the shorter side, she was jostled and pushed around, unlike Ollie and Dino, who towered above the crowd, thriving in the chaos.

With arms wrapped around each other's shoulders, Ollie and Dino jumped and riled up the dance floor, laughing and dancing with abandon. Meanwhile, Adeline had completely lost sight of Maya and found herself surrounded by strangers.

Desperately trying to push through the crowded area, the black-haired girl finally managed to escape the crowded floor, feeling completely overstimulated. Taking a deep breath, Adeline took a long swig from her canned drink and decided to seek some fresh air in the front yard, where there would most likely be not many people.

As she walked through the house party, Adeline exchanged faint smiles and little waves with familiar classmates and friends. With a couple more steps, the debate captain finally reached the front porch of the Cortes household.

Closing the door behind her, she was soon met with the faint sounds of talking and music, now feeling a little more at peace before she looked down to see a familiar body sitting on the steps in silence.

"Hi?" She quirked a brow as he briefly glanced back and gave her a short and fake smile.

With her alcoholic beverages finally catching up to her, Adeline was feeling like a completely different person at this point. Bringing it upon herself, she straightened out her skirt before taking the tight vacant space on the steps beside the blonde, glancing at him with a look not even Paul could read.

"What are you doing?" He asked, not bothering to even look her in the eyes as his hand rested behind his neck. It was no secret there was something wrong, Adeline was easily able to read it.

"Well, I came out here for fresh air, and then I find you sitting here alone like you're moping." She explained. "What's up with you?"

"Don't worry about it." The blonde shrugged it off.

"Okay, sick." She attempted to get up and just leave him be, unsure as to why she even bothered but she was suddenly met with his hand around her forearm.

"Wait-" He stopped her which made Adeline pull away from his grip, causing him to profusely apologize.

But she really just didn't care at this point.

"Could you stay for a minute?" Paul questioned as she looked at their surroundings, wondering if she was the only one that heard that, but clearly she was, since nobody else was around.

"Now why would I do that?" Adeline nearly laughed.

"You don't have to talk to me, I just need the company." He seemed genuine. "I don't know."

"Whatever." She internally groaned before letting out a physical sigh. "But, now you have to tell me what's wrong. I'm nosy." Adeline rejoined him on the steps, briefly offering him some of her drink that he happily took a quick swig from.

"It's stupid." He shook his head, handing the can back to her.

"Well, it looks like you've been crying, which is embarrassing, considering the fact you're better than that." She scoffed, chugging the rest of her drink and setting it aside.

"Right..." Paul mumbled under his breath before the two entered a quiet pause, but this time it felt comfortable. "Well, she left me for someone else." He broke their silence, laughing at the words that escaped his mouth as if he was still dumbfounded.

"Viv was cheating on me."

"Wait, actually?" Adeline was practically gagged. "That's awful?"

"We didn't even go on for that long but I just-really liked her." Paul sighed. "And it sucks harder when I remember how I've genuinely did a lot for her." He paused.

"I feel like an idiot."

"Well, that is what you are." The debate captain mumbled under her breath, causing the blonde to glare at her in response. "Not helping."

"Wasn't trying to help." Adeline snickered. "I don't know, mate. I tried warning you." She finally looked him in the eyes. "Her treatment towards your friends should have been a biiiig sign-"

"I'm sorry." Paul cut her off. "I'm really sorry, Adeline." He groaned into the palms of his hands. "I know I'm the biggest idiot and I genuinely hope you understand that this is coming from the bottom of my heart."

"Whoever taught you how to apologize to others properly deserves a fat kiss on the lips..." The girl replied with a laugh.

"Dude."

"Yeah, sorry too soon." Adeline bit down on her bottom lip and tried to focus. "But.." She took a deep breath. "Apology accepted." Her shoulders lifted into a shrug of non-chalance. "Forgave you a long time ago, but the disappointment still lingered."

"I understand." He nodded. "I just wish it could all go back to normal. Everything practically happened for nothing."

"And whose fault is that?" She joked once again in attempts to lighten the mood, causing him the throw his head back and groan.

"Mine." He sighed.

"At least you're aware. I admire that." She pat him on the back which resulted in him glancing at her.

"So, are we good?" He asked.

"Somewhat." Adeline shrugged, causing him to let out a breath of disappointment. "Yes. We're good." She laughed and corrected herself, this time receiving a satisfied smile from him. "For now." The girl added to tease him.

"I'm cool with that." Paul said happily, staring at her as they now sat in a silence.

With their heads facing each other, Adeline looked into his eyes as she felt a heavy pit in her stomach grow.

Were Paul's eyes always that shade of blue? She thought.

Girl, snap out of it.

Thinking back to Jak's words from a couple days ago, she couldn't help but feel like exploding. She thought to herself, realizing and asking how did she even get here?

She just wanted a breath of fresh air...

Snapping back into her moment of reality, she noticed herself inch closer as he did the same. Their breaths practically being the only thing separating the two.

But just in time-

She pulled away.

"I'm sorry I-"

"Don't worry about it." Adeline shook her head before standing up. The girl was clearly panicking as she was attempting to leave as soon as possible.

"Adeline-"

"I'll see you around."

And with that, Paul was left on the porch, alone with his thoughts once again.

But this time, the racing feeling of nearly kissing Adeline Huang, lingered at the back of his mind.
