A COUPLE MORE HOURS WENT BY, and the end of the school day had finally approached. Adeline sat in her literature class, mindlessly playing with her manicure as she eyed Ollie who had fallen asleep beside her.

Dreading the last droning minutes of her teacher going on and on about the next chapters of their reading, she glanced back to look at Genevieve who already looked completely out of it.

"Be sure to read the last five chapters as we have a discussion next Tuesday. Be prepared." Their professor announced. "Class dismissed." He waved the students off and allowed them to leave early.

Gathering her things from her desk and shoving them back into her bag, Adeline aggressively nudged Ollie's side, causing the boy to immediately wake up.

Looking around disoriented, he glanced at Adeline before playfully pushing her head which caused her to grab the large book from her bag and smack him in the head with it.

"Okay! It's time to go." Genevieve inserted herself into the mix. "Don't you have siblings to pick up and babysit?" She glanced at the brunette boy.

"Unfortunately." Ollie rubbed his face to wake himself up more. "I'll see you guys tomorrow." He yawned before shoving his book into his bag and getting up.

"Bye." Adeline said civilly as he just waved another goodbye and walked out of the classroom. "Ready?" She soon turned to Gen.

"Yeah." The girl nodded. Her bag properly hauled over her shoulder as she stood by Adeline's desk.

Getting up from her seat, Adeline bid their literature teacher one more goodbye before following after Gen who was ready to leave as soon as possible.

Strutting through the halls, the duo interlocked arms as they were on a mission to head straight to the exit and towards the parking lot where Adeline's car sat.

Coincidentally, they had ran into Joslyn who was on her way to the music department, heading straight for her personal piano lessons from Mr. Leclerc, one of the newest teachers on staff, and without a doubt one of the most attractive instructors.

"Now, if you excuse me! I've got a date with Leclerc!" Joslyn smiled as Adeline quirked a brow.

"Piano lesson. And he's engaged." She corrected her friend.

"It would be nice if you fed my imagination sometimes." The girl replied with a complaining tone.

"Again, engaged."

"Not for long..."

"You're insane."

"Okay, sorry to cut things short, you and Adeline can kiss later, but we have to go." Genevieve butt in. "Have fun with Leclerc." She glanced at Joslyn.

"Oh, I so will."

"You're sick." The debate captain laughed.

"He's my backup if Ollie and I don't work out!" Joslyn paused, referring to her long term crush on the boy that had gotten no where. "And Ollie and I are definitely never going to work so me and Charles shall become lovers-"

"Charles is crazy-?-?-" Adeline was caught off guard by the use of the teacher's first name.

"You haven't even made one single move on Ollie, you are an idiot." Genevieve facepalmed. "You have to at least try before you declare failure."

"Ugh, you sound like Adeline." Joslyn groaned.

"You make it sound like that's a bad thing." The girl in question scoffed.

"Ding ding!" Joslyn replied sarcastically.

"Riiiiiight." Genevieve said awkwardly. "Okay but on a real note, we actually have to go." She checked the time. "We'll talk later, and please don't be insane in front of Leclerc."

"I can't make any promises."

"Unless you wan't a restraining order, I suggest you tone it down." Adeline pursed her lips.

"OH, SHUT-"

"Ta, ta!" The two girls waved, cutting Joslyn off before quickly walking off toward the exit that lead to the parking lot.

As they made their exit, Adeline reached into her bag to grab her car keys. Glancing up she spotted a familiar blonde, scrolling on his phone and leaning against her silly silver Ford Fiesta.

"Wait, watch this." Adeline stopped, grabbing Gen's arm before letting out a small snicker.

Quirking a brow, Genevieve watched her friend hold onto her car key before pressing the alarm button that immediately triggered the loud honking noises from her car, and as expected, Paul jumped in shock, dropping his phone before he tried to catch his breath from the sudden shock.

"YOU ARE EVIL." Gen covered her mouth in awe as Adeline laughed uncontrollably, holding onto her friend's arm for support as she giggled.

Attempting to compose herself, her laughs finally died down, allowing her to stop the car alarm that blared through the parking lot. Wiping away the tears that formed in the corners of her eyes, Adeline fixed her gaze towards Paul who already had a look of disbelief painted across his features, but his attempt at a suppressed laugh was still visible.

As the two girls finally approached the vehicle, the blonde was quick to pick his phone back up as Adeline didn't even bother to exchange a single word with him.

She could prank him... acknowledge him in a group chat, but willingly sparking a conversation face to face was not in the books for her.

Not right now, at least.

"Shotgun." Gen tried to lighten the tension as her friend tossed her bag into the trunk, leaving it open as a silent invitation for the other two to store their bags there too.

"You were shotgun regardless." Adeline said softly as she got into the drivers seat.

Exchanging awkward glances with Paul, Genevieve sighed as she lightly pat his back as a tactic of comfort, attempting to telepathically let him know that it will be okay, even though she had no clue if everything would actually end up being okay.

Finally getting settled into the car, Gen started to search up the directions to the shop before playing her casual playlist since she had aux, allowing Adeline to pull out of her parking spot and drive off.

"So... how was your guys' day?" Paul brought it upon himself to break the awkward silence, Adeline letting out a long exhale through her nose as Gen glanced back and softly smiled.

"My day was alright." She said with a nearly uncomfortable tone. "Excited for this weekend... you?"

"Pretty tame day. Nothing too major." Paul replied.

"So how did you get your keys taken this time?" Gen continued the conversation and questioned his text from earlier, causing him to laugh nervously.

"I came home four hours past curfew." He admitted. "My parents weren't too happy."

"Classic."

"Do I turn here?" Adeline interrupted and asked for the directions. "Uhhh-One more stop sign." Genevieve was quick to assist.

"How was your day?" Paul made eye contact with her through the rear view mirror, opening a conversation with then girl, causing her to grip the wheel harder.

"Fine." She shrugged. "Normal day, nothing special."

"Turn here." Genevieve pointed as Adeline listened.

The rest of the ride was painfully awkward. Genevieve didn't expect it to be this uncomfortable, but if she knew, she would've just stuck to the stressful idea of purchasing drinks the day of her party instead of enduring in such a short yet dreadful car ride with Paul and Adeline.

She thought it would've been fine, considering her friend's agreement in being civil with the boy, but the interactions nonetheless were hard to watch.

Ever since said agreement from Adeline though, Joslyn and Genevieve started casually talking with Paul again. It was no secret the friend group wanted everything to go back to normal again, therefore they would talk in the group chat like nothing happened, yet everything was still out of order.

It was very clear, nothing would be the same again.

"Wanna stay here? Me and Paul can just go in." Genevieve offered as Adeline crossed her arms and shrugged. "Yeah, I'm good with that."

"Okay, we'll be back." Gen winked before getting out of the car with Paul.

Watching the two enter the mini mart, Adeline took a deep breath before shutting her engine off and reaching for her phone with only one idea in mind.

Call Jak.

Glancing at the clock, she did the math in her head and realized it was 9:00AM for him as it was 3:00PM for her. Knowing he would most likely be getting ready for his school day, she dialed his number and of course, the curly haired boy picked up in no time.

"Hello..." He answered, setting his phone down on what seemed to be his bathroom sink as he brushed his teeth.

"Jackson, I am in a dilemma." Adeline sighed as she held up her phone with the stand she installed into her car.

"Not my name... But what's up?" Jak asked as he rinsed his mouth and gave her his full attention.

"It's about Paul." She admitted.

"Right..." He nodded slowly before picking his phone back up and dried his face. "What about him exactly?" Jak pressed further into the conversation as he began to walk through the hallway of his house.

"He's in the store with Gen right now, and I just drove them. But-The car ride." She explained. "I don't know what to do, I don't know how to be his friend anymore.. Everything was just excruciatingly awkward."

"A wise woman once told me that it's only awkward if you make it awkward." Jak replied as Adeline rolled her eyes.

"I'm literally the one who told you that."

"Exactly." He laughed. "You're only making it awkward." The boy shrugged as he set his phone down and began to change clothes off camera.

"But that's the thing-I don't know why or how I'm making it so awkward?" Adeline groaned. "I mean I do?-Kinda? Because his girlfriend basically mutilated me and he practically chose her over our lifelong friendship-"

"You agreed to be civil, didn't you?"

"Yeah..."

"Okay, then act like it." Jak picked his phone back up and stared directly into the camera.

"IM TRYING-" Adeline groaned.

"Try harder!" He scolded. "You always know how to keep it professional or casual when it's needed... so I don't know why it's so difficult for you now." The boy paused.

"Unless...

... Nevermind."

"WHAT?!" Adeline shot forward. "Unless what? Share with the class." She furrowed her eyebrows.

"Nothing. It's nothing." Jak shook his head as it seemed like he was heading down the stairs of his house.

"I'll actually kill you. Tell me what you're thinking."

"No, because you're gonna kill me." He sighed, setting his phone down on a kitchen counter.

"You're getting killed regardless apparently." The girl groaned. "Tell me what you were gonna say."

"Unless you have a crush on Paul or something?" Jak blurted, causing Adeline to do a double take and stare at him in complete shock.

"Excuse me?"

"Have you ever maybe considered that your deep rooted hatred for everything and most importantly, Paul's relationship is because you have a crush-"

"Carlton Jak Crawford, I'm about to beat you with a stick." Adeline cut him off and stared at him unamused. "You're bat shit insane to even accuse me of being interested in that disgusting thing of a man."

"It's a mere possibility." The boy scoffed. "Maybe you're just in denial at the moment."

"Are you seriously trying to gaslight me into thinking I have feelings for Paul Aron? I don't have a crush on him! I never have and I never will?!" She crossed her arms as she was visibly becoming agitated.

"Well then! I'm out of ideas. I can't tell you why you're so awkward around him." Jak shrugged as he made himself a bowl of cereal.

"Useless." She groaned into the palms of her hands.

"I tried to help and give you suggestions." He said with a mouthful. "Yeah, and it didn't help whatsoever." The girl rolled her eyes.

"I'm just observant."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Adeline quirked a brow.

"You and Paul were never the closest... I mean, lifelong friends nonetheless but this year, I've noticed how much you were willing to do for him." Jak shrugged as Adeline felt herself physically twitch.

"I'm just being a good friend-"

"I'm not done." He cut her off. "You helped him get the girl he wanted, even though she was a complete bitch, and regardless you showed him how to be a better person."

"Again... just a good friend." Adeline defended.

"Throughout the years in general, you always showed up to games because he begged you specifically. Ollie, Kimi, and I never really cared, but he did and you still showed up-"

"Okay, now why are you just pulling things out of your ass right now." She wasn't having any of Jak's stupid "inspirational" speech.

"Because honestly, I've always thought you had a little thing for Paul." He admitted.

"You're actually insane." She shook her head. "And quite frankly, pissing me the hell off."

"You're mad because I'm right... aren't I?" He chewed his cereal.

"I'm mad because you're being loud AND wrong." Adeline argued. "I'll talk to you later." She scoffed and grabbed her phone. "I need to be alone."

"So, it's a yes then? I'm right?" Jak said cockily, causing her to grow rapidly in more anger.

Without another word, Adeline quickly hung up the phone and set it down into her lap. Feeling herself grow hot, she slightly rolled down the windows in a quick pace as her mind raced with Jak's ridiculous words.

She did not like Paul Aron.

She swears on her life she does not.

That's crazy talk.

And quite frankly, super random?

Hiding her face into the palms of her hands, Adeline hunched over in the drivers seat as her mind raced.

Jak basically gaslighted her into thinking she liked Paul?

Right?

Because she never thought of Paul in that way.

Adeline only saw him as a friend. A friend that needed help, and a friend that just wanted to change for the better.

Maybe it was the way he was willing to change everything about his behavior, and gradually succeeding in that department was something endearing and admirable, but not to the point where she had feelings for him?

No way.

With a few more silent moments to herself, Adeline glanced up, only to be startled by Gen who was standing
close to her door, smiling like a manic.

"OPEN!" The girl said through the cracked window.

Looking around in a pure state of shock, she noticed Paul already standing at the back end of her trunk, a full cart of drinks and snacks in a trolley beside him.

After allowing the two to load her car, Adeline stayed silent as Paul and Gen gathered everything together before finally getting back into the car.

"So, you might hate me for this..." Gen whispered. "But I need to be home ASAP." She said in a low voice so Paul couldn't hear.

"Huh? Why?!" Adeline glanced. "Can't I just take him home first? And then you? I'll be quick, I swear."

"I live on the opposite side of town from the both of you. I need to be home before my dad. He got off work early." She whispered. "He cannot see the drinks..."

"Genevieve, I-"

"I'm so sorry. Please, I owe you one, genuinely."

"I uh-I sent you gas money... by the way." Paul butt in, causing her to turn around to glance at him before turning back around to take a deep breath.

"Are you okay?" Gen asked quietly, only to receive a quick head shake from Adeline in response. "Yeah... thought so. I don't know why I asked."

Letting out a sharp exhale through her nose, Adeline mindlessly started her car before looking over at Gen with a painful smirk. "You owe me big time." She mouthed the words before pulling out of the parking spot and began her way towards the Cortes household.

Keeping to herself for the rest of the car ride, Gen and Paul kept minimal conversation as they chatted away and discussed the plans of the huge party the girl was planning to throw this following weekend. With shared laughs and hopeful expectations, they matched each other's energy while Adeline stayed silent in the process of it all.

Finally approaching the familiar house that sat on the end of a cul-de-sac, Adeline parked her car before getting out to help the other two unload the trunk and store the contents into Gen's cellar where her parents wouldn't even bother checking.

With the final case of drinks being unloaded, courtesy of Paul, Adeline stood by her car and bid Gen a goodbye before the blonde reappeared and gave the tan skinned girl a goodbye of his own.

"Thank you for the help, Paulito." Gen smiled. "I appreciate it." She waved and backed away towards her house. "I'll see you both on Saturday?"

"Why not tomorrow?" Paul quirked a brow.

"She's got plans with her parents tomorrow.. Remember?" Adeline nudged his side which caused her to quickly back away as that was the first time she had somewhat made physical contact with the boy in ages.

"Right..." Paul nodded. "See you Saturday then! Can't wait." He waved as Gen laughed, giving the two playful air kisses before finally heading into her house.

Now leaving the two alone, Adeline and Paul stood awkwardly leaned against the girl's car before she glanced over at him with a forced smile. "Come on." She motioned with her head before walking towards the drivers side.

Watching him nervously walk around her car, she noticed he was about to get into the back seat which caused her to immediately lock her doors, which made him glance up in confusion.

"I'm not your Uber driver. Get in the front, idiot." She sighed as he gave her a small smile, but she just glared in response.

As the two got in, Adeline handed him the aux cord, not caring for what he played, but just wanting to get this car ride over with as it was probably going to be a long and excruciating 15 minutes.

With the familiar tune of Ivy by Frank Ocean beginning to play, causing Adeline to internally groan.

It really couldn't get more awkward than this.

"I go this way... right?" She broke the silence as she almost forgot how to get to his place.

"No, the other way." He pointed.

"Wait, actually?" Adeline quirked a brow as she could've sworn it was the way she pointed, but she just needed reassurance.

"Nah, I'm just messing with you." Paul laughed, causing her to finally look at him again, this time a wide smile on his face that made her want to die.

Were Jak's words just getting to her head...

Because why was she feeling this way? She thought.

"You're an idiot." Adeline mumbled, trying to force herself to get through this car ride.

"And you're just gullible." He shot back, causing her to shoot another glare at him, but this time a laugh following after.

As their minimal banter continued to grow, Adeline felt herself ease down and feel more comfortable throughout the drive, but still attempted to keep her walls up.

Her mind was a mess right now, she couldn't even think properly.

If one more minor inconvenience happened, she wouldn't hesitate to swerve her car and purposefully hit a tree at a full speed.

"So..." Adeline spoke up. "How's... you and Viv?" She immediately regretted asking once it escaped her mouth. She doesn't even know why that was a thought to begin with.

"Is that a genuine question or a trap..." Paul asked, causing her to let out a breathy laugh.

"Genuinely asking, I don't know." Adeline shrugged.

"Since when did you care about us?"

"Oh!" She wasn't liking his sudden burst of attitude. "Right! God forbid I try to talk and have a conversation with you after you've done me dirty on multiple occasions." Adeline paused.

"Constantly trying to get me to talk to you and once I do, you get defensive? That's a little ridiculous."

"I'm sorry-" He was quick to apologize. "I just didn't expect you to care..."

"I really don't!-I'm just trying to get through this painful car ride. The silence has been killing me." She brutally admitted while also clearly getting annoyed.

"Well, me and her aren't doing very good! So, sorry to get defensive about it." Paul confessed, causing her to quickly glance at him in shock. "Is that what you wanted to hear?"

"Fucks sake." She pinched the bridge of her nose in annoyance.

"I'd prefer we just go back to the silence." He scoffed.

"Fine by me."
