✷ 005: Lunch Table.
I CAN FIX HIM ! by KissLeclerc
September 6, 2022 # "Smart Ass."
SITTING AT THEIR usual table as the lunch hour approached, Ollie and Adeline were the first to arrive after they were dismissed from their French lecture a couple minutes early, sitting on opposite sides from one another.
Taking a seat beside Adeline was Joslyn, meanwhile Kimi and Genevieve soon came by, sitting beside the tall brunette.
"Vivienne is joining us today, right?" Gen quirked a brow as she pulled out her lunch. "I packed two forks this time." She whispered to Kimi as she had another pasta meal.
"Yeah, she should be.." Adeline shrugged with a reply, snacking on her pretzel sticks before looking back down to the book she was assigned in literature class.
"I've heard some girls in my Physics class talking about her." Gen mentioned. "She's a pain in the ass apparently."
"Ha. Paul really knows how to pick them." Joslyn snorted, taking a bite of her dino nuggets as Adeline nudged her in the side to act a little kinder in regard to Vivienne.
"So far to me, she seems okay." Adeline shrugged adding on. "I only gave her a brief tour yesterday, and she didn't say much."
"I'm kind of excited." Ollie snickered. "This lunch could go swimmingly or actually terrible." He smirked. "And i'm rooting for the second option."
"Aren't you just a bundle of joy..." Joslyn quirked a brow at him, receiving a mocking face from him.
"Hey guys!" Paul finally arrived, his arm slung around Vivienne, standing at the edge of the table. "I would like to properly introduce you guys to Viv." He smiled as the group sent kind smiles and little waves at her.
"Viv, this is Ollie, Kimi, Genevieve, Adeline, and Joslyn." He introduced them by name, going in clockwise order of the table. "Guys, this is Viv."
"Hi!" Joslyn sent a kind wave as Vivienne just briefly smiled in response.
"Oh. I hate her." She grumbled quietly in Adeline's ear, making her nearly choke on the pretzel stick in her mouth.
"Come sit!" Gen patted the vacant spot beside her as Paul took the open space beside Adeline. "Can I have one?" He reached over for a pretzel stick as she yanked the bag away.
"Paws off, sicko."
"Oh... that was a little mean." Vivienne said in disbelief as Adeline glanced up.
"Oh! It was just a joke... that's just how we all talk to each other." She replied awkwardly. Trying to briefly explain the dynamic as Vivienne was clearly judging.
"Do you want a pretzel stick..." Adeline sighed, asking Paul awkwardly as she slid the bag over to him, but he declined.
"No, I'm alright, I was just joking." He laughed as she took her pretzels back, briefly glancing at Ollie in annoyance as Vivienne clearly killed her vibe and turned back to her book.
"What are you reading?" Paul glanced over Adeline's shoulder as she looked back up in annoyance.
"Invisible Man by..." She paused to check the front cover again. "Ralph Ellison." She shrugged.
"Yeah, it's for our Literature class... but Adeline seems to be really into it." Ollie laughed as she rolled her eyes. "We were assigned the first two chapters last night, but she's nearly done with it."
"If you actually read it, you'd be interested too."
"Hard pass." He shook his head as Adeline suppressed a laugh in response, diving back into her chapter.
"I don't understand how you've been in the same Literacy level as Adeline all these years." Joslyn scoffed at the tall brunette in front of her.
"Because I just copy off her." He smirked knowingly.
"She deserves your first born for the way she's carried you through all of your classes since the age of twelve." Joslyn laughed as Ollie playfully rolled his eyes.
"Ohh, what do you have there?" Genevieve's voice caught the others attention as she glanced at Vivienne's tray of food.
"Got it at the cafeteria." The girl shrugged. "I just saw yogurt and grabbed it." She paused. "Then I added blueberries and granola."
"Is there a strawberry option?-" Adeline asked as she caught her attention. "That looks good."
"Oh... uh, yeah." Vivienne nodded. "But, I hate strawberries so I passed." She squirmed at the thought, leaving Adeline nearly speechless.
"Oh! I see... Hm... Maybe I'll get some in a bit." Adeline shrugged, awkwardly returning back to her book.
"Erm... So Vivienne, what's your favorite subject?" Ollie was quick to change the subject, shooting Adeline a subtle glance of solidarity.
Vivienne's lips curled into a smirk as she turned her attention to Ollie. "Mmm, definitely not literature," She replied with a small glance toward Adeline. "I prefer subjects that actually require thinking."
Adeline's jaw clenched, but she managed to maintain her composure. "Well, it's a good thing we all have different interests!" She said evenly, her tone tinged with annoyance.
Kimi, sensing the tension forming, attempted to diffuse the situation with a light-hearted joke. "Save it for debate club, ladies!" He said as Gen elbowed his side. A wince emitting from his lips in response.
"Oh, well of course!" Adeline shut her book and brought her attention to Vivienne. "Paul said you wanted to join the team?"
"Yeah, definitely!" Vivienne's voice dripped with skepticism, her gaze lingering pointedly on Adeline. "I suppose they'll need someone with actual intellect."
Adeline's smile tightened, her eyes narrowing imperceptibly. "Hm. Then I wonder where we can find that." She retorted with sarcasm. Vivienne's glare hardening in response.
"Well, Adeline." Vivienne responded, her tone icy, "Intellect isn't measured by one's ability to be a smart ass." She replied, making Adeline's jaw clench.
But she refused to back down, her gaze was kept steady as she met Vivienne's glare head-on.
"Of course not," She replied, her voice clearly fake, "But it does require a certain level of maturity and critical thinking, qualities which seem to be lacking...."
The tension between them crackled in the air, their words carrying the weight of a brewing rivalry. The rest of the group watched on, unsure whether to intervene or let the confrontation play out.
"Okay, enough." Paul stepped in, his voice firm and commanding. "You're both smart asses." He scoffed, glancing at the both of them as Vivienne's cold demeanor softened at the sound of his voice.
"I'm getting yogurt." Adeline shoved her book in her bag before slinging it around her shoulder. "With strawberries." She grumbled before putting her headphones over her ears.
"See you in Chemistry." Vivienne sent a mocking wave as Adeline gave her a glare and walked away.
"I think that's my cue to go as well." Joslyn packed her things, planning to follow after Adeline. "I'll see you guys later!" She bid them a goodbye as Genevieve shit her a knowing glare, telepathically trying to communicate to not leave her as the only other girl besides Vivienne.
"Sorry..." She secretively mouthed the words before turning on her heal and headed in the direction Adeline had went.
The rest of the lunch period passed in a brief and awkward silence, the tension between the two girls casted a shadow over the table, but Vivienne and Paul continued to chat.
As the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, there was a silent understanding among the group that this was far from over since she and Paul were getting closer by the minute.
And as they dispersed to their afternoon classes, the lingering tension served as a reminder that some wounds will just have to remain open.
