Chapter 2. Berry

I was a little dumbfounded that I now possessed such a special skill. I decided to see if I was imagining things, so I went to the place where I felt the plant was growing. I stealthily left the house and headed away from our land, toward the wild forest. There were no roads in these parts, only human or animal trails. From time to time there were small rivulets and swamps. It was difficult to get through because of the rough vegetation.

Several times I had to go back and look for another way because of impassable places in the form of deep breaks in the ground or very dense vegetation.

In these forests I met a lot of different plants different from those that I had seen on the pages of textbooks, books and live in this and past lives. There were, of course, some similarities in the form of leaves, but it was like putting leaves of a grass or a shrub to a tree.

There were even coniferous plants, but the smell was not coniferous, but more of an unpleasant and even nasty reminiscent of the smell of raw wool.

There were also plants and trees that smelled pleasant even and familiar, such as the scent of sea air freshener. There were also the usual scents one would find in a morning forest.

"Eh, I guess if my father finds out that I left without asking, I'll definitely be punished for the rest of my life..."

Again, I couldn't help but go, I felt something that could change my life.

As I walked deeper into the forest it became easier to get through, it didn't seem so thick anymore and the trees in these places were taller, creating a nice shade. As I approached the intended place, I saw a beautiful picture: in front of me was a canopy of a plant very similar to a grapevine, but the leaves were different, they looked like something like a very large maple leaf. I saw the berry that I had had in my visions. I reached for it, but full of excitement, I didn't notice that the plant had thorns. When I pricked it, I felt a strong pain that grew stronger by the second.

- Oh, water, cleanse me of the poison, actus. - After casting the spell, I felt much better.

"Okay, we have to be careful!"

After looking around a bit, I picked a berry where there were no thorns. Prepared to cast a spell of purification magic, I ate the berry. I felt like I'd been electrocuted. The flavor was exactly what I wanted to taste this morning. The flavor of this berry was very reminiscent of grapes. It was sugary-sweet, with pleasant notes of sourness.

It tasted like grapes: the skin was thick and the flesh underneath was tender and juicy, but it differed from grapes in that the berries were large. I counted 3-4 berries on the bunches and there were only one or two small seeds.

After eating the berries and collecting a decent amount of seeds, I took a handful of berries and dug up a small shoot of this plant, wrapped it in my cloak and headed back.

As I approached the house I saw my little sister greeting me.

- What are you doing here?

- I saw you climb out the window this morning and head towards the wild woods. Don't worry, Dad doesn't know. I told him you were sick and wouldn't eat breakfast. Father said you should get better and not go to the field.

- And mom?

- Mom didn't say anything, but I think she guessed I lied.

"Uh lucky. Not that I'm afraid of my father, but, in this life and in my past life, I had respect for my elders and recognized their authority."

I returned to the room the same way I had come out. Suddenly, my little sister was already standing in the room.

- That was fast.

- What's that wrapped up in your cloak?

- I want to grow and breed it," I said as I unwrapped the cloak.

- It looks like some kind of weed, and it's covered in thorns....  - I got her a couple of berries.

- Try some.

- Are you sure it's edible? I have never seen such berries.....

When she tasted one berry, she froze in surprise.  I couldn't tell whether she liked it or not, but after a couple of seconds she smiled.

- Brother, give me some more!

- I took some and haven't explored it yet.....

- I want more! More! - Looking at me, my little sister puffed up her cheeks, crossing her arms over her chest.

- Okay, okay, here you go!

I left a couple of berries and gave the rest to my little sister.  In a moment she was gone. Plucking a potted flower growing on the window, I planted the plant I had found, "If my mother saw me now, I would have gotten nobles..."

I spent almost an entire month studying this plant. I also planted seeds of this grape to understand its growth, what kind of soil it likes, and how the berries would taste if grown in different types of soil. My sister helped me from time to time. She was very interested in this plant. I promised her that she would be the first to taste the first fruits.  I wrote down all my research in a diary.

I found out that this plant contains poison in its thorns, which is formed in the cavities of the thorns themselves.  If you cut them off during the growth period, they would not grow back, but on new stems, the thorns had to be trimmed.  From time to time, I accelerated growth with a spell, but there were limitations. If I injected large amounts of manna, the growth was uncontrollable. The plant liked loose soil with a balanced amount of fertilizer, it would take root in any kind of soil, but the growth rate was slower.

"Okay, I need a small plot of land to grow this plant... I should ask my father for a piece of land for my studies." - with these thoughts, I went to my father's house.

- Good morning, mom.

At this time, Mammy was cleaning and packing up the laundry.

- Morning, Will.

- Hasn't Daddy left yet?  - I inquired.

- He's in his office, but he's about to leave for the village council and then the fields.

Lately, we have had to sell some of our crops to the army at an affordable price. This sort of solved the financial side of our life, but because of that there was sometimes not enough to sell to the common people. So my father started to develop the unused fields, but because of that there was more work and for the same reason we had to hire people from neighboring villages....

Knock, knock

- Come in.

- Good morning, Daddy.

- Good morning.

- I've come to make a request...

But before I could say anything to my father, a scream came from my room. My father and I quickly ran to my room. In the room stood my mom with an angry look on her face.

Most of the time I cleaned the room, but this time my mother decided to clean it herself.

- Where and why is that poisonous plant growing in your room?! I cut myself on it and it's a good thing I was able to cast a cleansing spell.

- I found it in the wild woods.

I didn't say I could find any plant I could imagine.

- I brought it home to cultivate and breed.

I could tell by the look on my father's and mother's faces that I'd said the wrong thing.

- Do you realize that this plant is poisonous and if you don't have a wizard around or cast a healing spell, you can die?!

I remembered that the moment I injected myself, I felt intense pain and cast a purification spell, and realized that if I didn't know magic, there was a good chance of my death. I realized more and more that this world was hostile to me.

- I want this plant out of here by tonight.

- But I found a use for it, Mom, Dad.

- I told you not to have it!

- I took a couple of berries I'd saved and turned them into raisins.

- What are these?

- Taste it," I gave a berry each to my father and mother.

Mom was the first to try.  She, like her sister, had a face full of surprise, but her reaction was calm.

- It's delicious, what is it?

At that moment my dad tried the berry, but I didn't see any reaction on his face.

- I'm going to ask the same question.

- This is the berry of the plant you want me to throw away.

But at that moment, mommy cast a spell.

- O water, cleanse me of the poison, actus.

And repeat it on my father.

- Are you trying to poison us? This plant is poisonous!

- You're wrong! I myself, when I found this plant, I tasted a decent amount of berries and nothing happened to me.

- He's right! I've tasted these berries too and they're delicious, nothing happened to me.

- Daddy, I came to you to ask you to give me one of your unused fields for my experiments.

- I'll consider your request, but I don't want to see that plant in this house!

- Yes, Daddy.

It turns out that this plant is called lilac ivy in this world. If you met it in the forest or somewhere in the field, or on the road, you tried to avoid it because of its poison, which causes severe pain. For the first 10 seconds there is still a chance to cast a spell, but because of the growing pain, the person usually lost consciousness, and then died of pain shock. There were some who survived, but they were very few in number. Because of its poisonous nature, no one ever thought of growing it, much less tasting its berries. I guess I'm a risky guy.

After a few tearful pleas from my little sister, my father took pity and gave me a couple of plots of land near the great tree

(The Great Tree was the name people gave to the tree I had poured too much manna into).

I began to cultivate the land my father had allotted me. A few more times I went to the wild forest for berries and seeds, of course, without telling my little sister, otherwise she ate all the berries I brought and didn't even leave seeds. So I began to grow lilac ivy.

A lot of people who saw what I was growing thought I was a fool and tried to avoid me, but it was good for me, too.  Because everyone thought I was making some kind of poison or potion.
