Chapter 23

Trumpets and horns have been blaring for a while now, my head pounding from the loud blasts as I wait in the cold cell, my body trembling with shivers as I try to retain as much warmth as I can.
The nausea has been coming and going today as I wait for the time just before the coronation when Linnate would come to gloat.
The clicking of heels bounce off the walls, and I knew it was almost time to break free.
"Wake up, I wanna show you all that you will be missing from today on." Her shrill voice rings through my pounding headache as I turn to look at her.
"Go away." I groan out, getting a cheerful smile from her.
"Awe, is the poor little pet not feeling good?" She mocks in a voice used for babies.
"Well hurry up and die then." She adds bitterly.
"Isn't it bad luck for a close friend of the prince to die before his coronation?" I ask slowly and I smirk inwardly at the way her face goes from a healthy glow to a ghostly white.
"You're right, stay alive for another three hours, then die."she states before turning away and walking back the way she had came.
I smiled happily, taking in the fact she gave me key information.
It was three hours before the ceremony would end, giving me time to escape and find my way to Kai.
The walls become silent again and I count to one hundred before I slip out of the bed, pad across the cold stone floor, and take out the old key.
"Please work." I whisper, slipping the key into the lock and closig my eyes with a small prayer before turning it.
I hear the satisfying click as the lock opens and I smile as I push the door open slowly and quietly, turning in the direction Linnate normally comes from and leaves before and after her gloating.
It didn't take too long for me to come to the end of the corridor only to find two hallways I could take.
"Damn it!" I stomp my foot in frustration and sigh, looking at the two directions, deciding to go left.
"Please let this be the right way for once." I plead to myself, hoping some great devine power could hear me and help me out.
I kept going straight, stoping when I came to another split, this time going left, right or straight.
It was confusing and I was sure I was lost.
I was about to continue straight but something made me stop and turn right. I didn't know what but my instincts told me to go this way and so I did.
This time I came to a dead end with a tapestry handging proudly on the wall and I couldn't help but crumble to the ground and cry. I was hopelessly lost, my emotions were out of order and I was just drained.
After a few minutes of crying though, my sadness became rage and I started kicking the damn tapestry.
I wanted to get out of here, smell the fresh air and play with my dogs for crying out loud.
I wanted to be with Kai.
I made my way to the end of the wall, kicking one last time and hearing a loud thud.
I stoped, stared at the spot, and kicked it again.
Hope soared in me and quickly I pull back the tapestry, revealing a wooden door.
"A secret passage way." I mumble in awe, opening the door that squeeked with rust, as if the door hadn't been used in ages.
This was what I needed and I took this chance to enter the dark stair way, climbing them in near darkness.
The climb felt like an eternity and I was winded with in minutes. There seemed ti be no end in sight.
Hours must have passed and finally, when I thought the stairs would never end, I heard music. This made me move faster as I kept climbing with new hope, my feet taking me to freedom once again.
Soon the darkness became dimness and, as I climbed higher, light could be seen and the music was louder. I was almost there.
My legs were weak and I was panting with fatigue but I finally reached the last step.
"Is there any announcement you would like to make now, King Alekai?" I smiled, Kai was King and I had made it in time.
"Yes, I would like to make an announcement. In a week, Lady Linnate and I would-"
Dread and dispare filled me as I used the last strength I had to push forward, past the light tapestry that blocked my path.
"Wait Kai!" I called out, my knees giving out on me as the room of nobles stared at me.
"L-Lyra?"
