Chapter 16
"You look amazing"
"The dress is so flimsy tho"
"Look, the dress shows off your curves and its modest. Besides only I get to see whats under this gown my Song Bird."
I blush as Alekai's hands wrap around my waist and pulls me closer to him. I was in a light blush gown that reminded me of thin gauze frabric with the usual diamonds. My hair piled high on my head with loose curls framing my face.
"Fine Kai, lets head down stairs now." I sigh in defeat, smiling happily when he kisses my cheek.
We were heading down to the charity ball that his parents throw each summer, the palace staff running around in a frenzy all day.
Kai and I had been smart and stayed in the room with the pups, taking the stair way to the library when we had too to take them for their walks.
Most of the time we were in bed or on the couch making love, not just screwing each other either.
I had caught him staring at me a few times when he thought I wasn't looking, his eyes sparkling and sending my heart into quick flutters.
It was a great lazy day and we even snuck in one of our long baths while Elisa took care of the pups.
"Relax, Song Bird. We only have to be there for a few hours."
I felt him squeez my hand and I squeezed back, taking a deep breath.
I knew his parents hated me but there was nothing I could do about that.
Why do I even care about what his parents think.
I thought to myself. I was a slave, I shouldn't care about what they think.
But you do.
A small voice inside me pointed out.
I sighed inwardly while an easy smile spread across my face as we entered the massive ballroom, eyes turning to us as Alekai and I took careful steps while decending the small stair case.
I should enjoy this night and stop worrying.
We danced our way around the ball room after introductions, glares from Lady Linnate always sent my way.
I just smiled sweetly when I could.
"She hates me you know." I state as Alekai hands me a drink.
"Who?"
"Linnate."
"She hates competition and believes everything should be hers."
"Thats selfish."
"Your right, thats why everything should be yours."
I nearly choked on my drink as his words surprised me, Alekai rubbig my back with a look of concern.
"Why would everything be mine?"
"Because-" his words were cut off as a scream silenced the room, everyone turning to the source.
"Mother!" He exclaimed, running to the throne as sobbs could be heard.
I ran with him, pushing our way through the crowd and stoping at the sight before us.
The Queen was clutching her husband hands while sobbing heart wrenching cries, blood dripping out of the Kings ears, mouth and nose as his eyes stared blankly into the crowd.
"GUARDS LOCK THE CASTLE DOWN, NO ONE IS LEAVING!" Alekai yells out as I carefully walk over and slowly pry the Queen away from her dead husband. The waft of poison filling my nose.
"Kai, who ever did this used poison." I say, holding the Queen as she crumbled into my arms, her hands clutching my dress as her tears stained the fabric.
"I know, only poison could make him look like this." I hear his exasperated response as he motioned for a group of guards to wrap the King in a table cloth.
"Take him to the Doc, tell him to find out what poison was used."
"Yes Sir."
With that the King was taken away while I held the Queen back.
"You can't take him from me! Please bring him back." She pleaded, bringing tears to my own eyes.
"I'm sorry, its too late." I whispered as she cried as if her heart out was being ripped out, and I supposed it was in this situation.
A Lady in waiting helped me bring the Queen to her sitting room where the two of us sat while she cried until she fell asleep.
Alekai and the Guards interrogating everyone in the castle.
"How is she?" I looked up from a book I was occupying myself with when Alekai walked in, a basket in his hands and the pups finding an empty couch to sit in.
"Asleep, what about you?"
He smiles sadly at me and lays down on the couch I was in, his face burying into my stomach as he started to cry.
I set the book down and wrap my arms around him as best as I could, holding him close as I soothed him like I did his mother.
In the end I was left alone with the two sleeping royals, their grief filling the room.
