Chapter 33 | The grey eyed sadness

With a sense of justice and worry in our hearts me and Sean left the destroyed Bunker. We sprinted toward Patricia's house (although we had to stop twice due to Sean's heart condition).

Eventually, we reached Patricia's home, but at the edge of the pathway to her house when my feet froze as all movement ceased. It was like my feet had spontaneously sprouted roots and rooted into the cracks of the pavement slabs.

Sean turned to me and studied my unmoving body intently confusion clear on his face before he spoke "what's wrong Alexis? Are you okay you've stopped, which I know is obvious but you know..." he waited for my response timidly.

My mind froze, I could barely respond to Sean without my words dissipating before they even escaped my mouth. I was trapped inside myself, paralysed with fear. For a moment I contemplated what it would be like to just live inside my own body, no outside contact just me and my own thoughts for the rest of eternity. Living inside myself, for the rest of my life alone but isolated from the rest of society, nothing could hurt me ever again.

No.

If I just gave up and stayed inside myself I would be giving anyone power over me, I'd be giving Mister Crow the satisfaction that he had beaten me (that could never happen!) Finally, I turned to Sean and responded "yeah I'm okay it's just that me and Patricia had a fight did I tell you that, well it doesn't matter I just told you again but I'm just nervous is all!" My tone told all and Sean knew enough and didn't press any further.

Sean looked at me and grasped my hand tightly before he spoke to me "well you're not alone I'm here you don't have to face her alone, I'll always be here trust me!" He gave a compassionate smile and I smiled back.

Step by step we strode up the pathway of Patricia's home, Sean stood by me each step of the way. When we reached the door I looked down at our interlocked hands and Sean did as well, my face flushed as we both pulled away. After a minute of awkward nothingness I pressed the button to the side of Patricia's front door, inside a bell ring out loudly to all the occupants inside.

After a few seconds we were hollered inside by Patricia's mother as we swung open the door inwards. Patricia's mother (who's name was Laura Walker) had long black hair tied back in a pony tail, with a slightly darker grey eyes than Patricia. Under closer inspection Laura on her left fore arm had a deep scar that was jagged in shape the scar was obviously noticeable due to the discolouration of the skin being slightly lighter than her skin tone (the discolouration was especially obvious due to Laura's Spanish background which also passed onto Patricia). Laura wore a pair of black baggy pants with a pair of black slippers and a white t-shirt under a white apron with light pink flower pattern on it.

Laura spoke first "hello Alexis, come in and who is this?" Her tone was compassionate and clearly caring but something seemed to be eating at her, some form of sadness.

"Hi, this is Sean he's a friend umm I was wondering where is Patricia?" I asked.

Laura's eyes became saddened but nonetheless she replied to me "Patricia is in her room but be careful we got a message from her dad, she made a deal with him but she has been really upset by it, so tread lightly" Laura then beckoned us in and she moved out the way of the door so me and Sean could get inside their home.

We ventured inside as Laura locked the door and walked back inside to the kitchen while me and Sean continued toward Patricia's room. I knocked on the door and a muffled 'come in' echoed from inside the room.

I pushed the door open and it opened with a creak of it's hinges, inside the room was: Patricia's bed with lilac purple stripes running down it's bed sheets, a white wooden closet, a white wooden desk with sheets of paper and a pot of pens on it and a board of pictures of many familiar faces scattered across it.

Patricia was sat on her bed faced away from us staring out her window. I slowly walked up to her and tapped her on the shoulder, she turned her eyes red with tears soaked in bitter sadness.

I broke the silence by asking "Patricia ar- are you okay?" My voice stuttered slightly as I tried to be comforting for Patricia.

Patricia's eyes poured with tears as she started to bawl her eyes out showing pure emotion (which was rare  due to Patricia's frequent lapses of an emotionless state) I sat on Patricia's bed next to her and placed my arms around her letting her cry freely.

I whispered to Patricia softly, "tell me what happened?" With those simple words I felt Patricia tears soften slightly as she readied herself for replying.

Patricia began but trying to stop her tears (unsuccessfully) but she finally began speaking "my d- dad called and he said he wanted to see me, obviously I said no but then he g- gave me a choice that if I stayed with him for a month and I still never wanted to see him that he wouldn't call again!" She explained.

I replied hesitantly "I'm guessing you said yes and that's the root of all your distress" Patricia thought about my words before she nodded. "Well what's done is done you can't go back and all I can do is be there for you, but for now I need your help!" Patricia looked up at me happy that I could distract her from her deal she made with her father.

For the next twenty minutes me and Sean explained what had happened, and what we found at The Bunker and what our current suspicions were.

After we had explained what Mister Crow had said on the tape and why we had come to see Patricia, she understood our predicament completely. In response she replied with "is that why I got this.." She held up a small silver key in a clear plastic bag with Patricia's name on. "Is it for this closet in The Bunker? It was left in our letter box today" She asked.

In response Sean replied with "yeah that could be."

Finally, Patricia stood and responded her voice with a clearly fake peppy attitude "well there is only one way to find out!" Her tone started to change to a familiar emotionless one.

Patricia with an emotionless spring in her step snatched some sort of sheathed katana looking weapon up and effortlessly bounded out of her room. Her spring in her step propelled her to the front door with me and Sean close at her heels. Suddenly, Patricia changed her course from the front door to the kitchen for a minute and before leaving she hugged her mother goodbye before she returned to the door and we all left the Walker household.

We ran at a slower pace than before: Patricia never stopping or even sounding tired, Sean occasionally gasping for air as he trailed slightly behind Patricia and me changing my speed to either catch up to Patricia or wait up for Sean.

Eventually, we reached The Bunker and I pushed the door open, and Sean showed Patricia the video inside both of them watched intently never tearing their eyes away from the screen even for a second.

After the two of them had finished watching Mister Crow's video message, Patricia scanned the room with her eyes darting all around the ruined Bunker before her eyes finally settled on something: the locked closet.

She strode up to the locker the key that was left in her letter box in her hand and without so much as a warning she slid the key inside the lock. She turned the key and with a small click the lock unlocked and the door slowly swung open the creaking of its hinges sounding more like a dying animal than anything else.

Inside the cabinet was: a cluttered mess of paper and the reconstructed map Shadow had made and then destroyed, my messenger bag with all it's contents laid out, My phone, the PTD and most disturbingly of all the letter my mother gave me.

Tears welled in my eyes at the thought of Shadow's betrayal by reading my mother's brief but sacred letter that was meant for me, but Shadow had taken that privilege. He'd desecrated my mother's last words, simply by reading them.

I moved away from the closet and Patricia moved with me her arm holding me offering emotional support, meanwhile Sean was sifting through the contents of the closet intently his eyes scanning through everything absorbing every detail.

After a solid fifteen minutes of silence and quiet sobbing Sean turned round to face me and Patricia. Sean took a deep breath before he spoke "well I think I might know where Shadow has gone!" His tone was confident, so confident I dried my eyes as me and Patricia waited for Sean's theory about Shadow.
