Chapter 29 | The brick wall

I reached my home at around nine p.m., the sky above was almost completely black with a tint of dark blue and littered with specks of shining white.

I walked up to the house and slowly clambered up on to the low roof below my bedroom window, I eased my window open and climbed into my bedroom and inside my home. My bedroom door was still closed how I left it when I left, so I assumed that my father had no idea that I had been out or where I had been.

I slumped onto my bed and decided the most reasonable thing to do was sleep while I could.

My sleep wasn't full of nightmarish dreams or full of lucid dreamscapes filled with beautiful flowers or shrubbery like it should be, but rather my dream was me stood in an infinite darkness all around me.

I stood on some sort of reflective surface that only reflected that darkness around me. My dream then started to change and shapes formed in the darkness the shapes took form into...the shape of a man who wore a black jacket with for pockets on the front buttoned up with singular black buttons and a zip, the man also wore a pair of black pants with a black belt, a pair of black boots and finally on the mans face was a skull mask that same skull mask that Mister Crow wore!

The figure in front of me was Mister Crow. Next to Mister Crow a sign appeared that said 'Mister Crow' but who was Mister Crow?

In my head I thought that if Mister Crow was anyone it would have to be someone that I knew! So I thought of everyone I knew:
My father,
Shadow,
Tom Anderson,
Patricia Walker,
Michael Bishop,
Kara Kincaid,
Henry Kincaid,
Lizzie Kincaid,
John Kincaid,
Dorris Morse,
The woman who died in my arms,
Elliot Anderson,
Sean Anderson,
Philip
And my mother.

I thought about what I knew about Mister Crow, I knew that he was a he! So I could eliminate any women from my suspects. Eliminating Patricia Walker, Kara Kincaid, Lizzie Kincaid, Dorris Morse and my mother (however she was eliminated as a suspect because she was dead). Leaving me with:
My father,
Shadow,
Tom Anderson,
Michael Bishop,
Henry Kincaid,
John Kincaid,
Elliot Anderson,
Sean Anderson
And Philip.

Next I could eliminate anyone who is dead. Eliminating Tom Anderson. Leaving me with:
My father,
Shadow,
Michael Bishop,
Henry Kincaid,
John Kincaid,
Elliot Anderson,
Sean Anderson
And Philip.

Next I could eliminate anyone who was comatose. Eliminating Michael Bishop and Elliot Anderson. Leaving me with:
My father,
Shadow,
Henry Kincaid,
John Kincaid,
Sean Anderson
And Philip.

Next I could eliminate anyone who had been there when Mister Crow and I had been there. Eliminating Shadow and Sean Anderson. Leaving me with:
My father,
Henry Kincaid,
John Kincaid
And Philip.

Finally I could remove who hadn't been in town for very long. Eliminating Philip since Shadow only called him yesterday. Leaving me with:
My father,
Henry Kincaid
And John Kincaid.

I had three suspects one including my own father! But in all honesty I could not be sure it was anyone of them. However there was also the possibility that I did not know who Mister Crow was!

Suddenly, I awoke in a bright morning with no clue to the true identity of Mister Crow leaving me feeling annoyed and disturbed me deeply.

Groggily, I dragged myself out of bed fully dressed. I grabbed my messenger bag and walked downstairs to greet and empty room. I overslept and when I finally awoke my father had already presumably left for work.

I wandered into the kitchen and fixed myself breakfast (which was horrible due to the fatigue I was suffering) eventually I decided to eat a bowl of porridge.

Begrudgingly, I ate the porridge enjoying every bland mouthful due to the lack of food yesterday. Nonetheless I persevered through the meal and finished.

I got up from eating my porridge, then I moved to the sink and proceeded to wash the bowl and spoon. I had no idea what to do, I had no plans, no unexpected text messages of upmost urgency, no beeping from the PTD and no best friends kidnapping random participants off the street.

I had an entire day to myself (for once). So with an entire day to myself I decided to: find out why the river behind Lizzie's house stopped flowing for a time?

To answer my question I decided to leave my house and make my way to Lizzie's house. The walk to Lizzie's house was great because I had no troubles just one question that would not be left unanswered (like most of my questions).

After reaching Lizzie's house, I avoided all of the windows and any chance of anyone from the Kincaid family seeing me because one of them (Kara Kincaid) was a participant. Furthermore two of them (John and Henry Kincaid) in my dream had made the short list of Mister Crow suspects.

To the side of the house was a small gap I could fit through that led straight past the back of Lizzie's home and behind it. I walked up to the gap and turned sideways to side step through the small gap.

Slowly, I moved through the gap careful not to catch any of my clothing on any nails or branches between the two sides of the brick wall and fence. I continued to walk breathing steadily to avoid getting caught.

Suddenly, a voice called out from the other side of the fence facing toward the Kincaid house "Lizzie that is not how you trim plants at all!" The voice snapped. I instantly recognised the voice as Kara Kincaid's.

Another different voice called out in response "sorry but I'll get better" the second voice was Lizzie's, Kara Kincaid's daughter.

Then a third voice called out from beyond the fence "hey come on sis just grab hold of the thorns" the third voice was John Kincaid's the eldest son of Henry and Kara.

I shuffled further but quickly realised that moving created noise so I stopped not wanting either Kara or John to find me. The brick wall separating me from the Kincaid's back garden was the only thing protecting me from being discovered.

Without warning shuffling emanated from behind the wall and through the holes I could see a face, that belonged to Lizzie. This was my chance to keep John and Kara away.

"Lizzie" I whispered quietly while crouching slightly.

Lizzie moved her head toward the sound of my voice and whispered "umm hello?" Her voice was Timid.

"It's me Alexis" I responded as I waved from behind the wall, as Lizzie's eyes widened in astonishment after seeing me.

"What are you doing behind my garden wall?" Lizzie asked curiously as she smiled slightly out of confusion.

"I'm trying to get to the woods behind your house but because your mom is a snitch and will probably ask questions or tell my dad I don't want either your mom or brother to know" I explained causing Lizzie to raise her eyebrow in confusion.

"That made little to no sense" Lizzie replied whilst giggling.

"I know but I just nee-" I stopped speaking when I noticed Lizzie's hand...she held a white rose in her clenched hand, her fingers firmly grasped on the thorns which caused blood to trickle down the flowers stem and onto the ground.

"But what?" Lizzie's pursued not even noticing her bleeding hand.

"Lizzie your hand it's bleeding" I informed her, to which she looked down and audible gasped and winced in pain.

"How did that hap-" Lizzie started but stopped and started another sentence "alright I'll get John and my mom away using this!" Lizzie's responded as she held up her bleeding hand.

"Thank you, I owe you one" I responded in a whisper.

"MOM, I think I need a bandage" Lizzie shouted as she walked over to her mother and John followed her to presumably to take a closer look at the blood flowing from Lizzie's hand.

I continued to shuffle along the gap until I reached the end and then I was finally out of earshot of John and Kara.

The edge of the woods was lonely and quiet, no noise at all. I made my way through the woods slowly until I eventually reached the river. The river flowed for a while until abruptly stopping before my eyes! Then the flow returned within a few minutes and repeating this cycle of stopping and starting over and over again.

I decided follow the river walking against the flow to find it's source.

When I reached what seemed to be the source of the river was a great white wall slightly discoloured due to age with a gap allowing water to flow out and into the river, but this gap would constantly open and close sometimes stopping the flow of water and releasing it again.

This was the answer to my question: the reason the river stopped flowing periodically was due to the opening and closing of the gate built into the wall which I then recognised as the dam! Which I had visited yesterday after reading my mother's letter.

With one question answered but many more I decided I'd had enough and walked home.
