Chapter 27 | The little box
"So where did you sleep last night Alexis?" Philip repeated his question.
"On a rooftop" I responded plainly not lying.
"Well that doesn't sound very safe or very comfy" Philip replied his tone soft, yet I still remained wary of him.
"Well it's better than a small room with pictures of yourself all over the walls" I responded unusually peppily for what had actually happened to me...what Mister Crow did to me.
"Would you care to elaborate?" Philip pressured further.
"Sure!" I responded with a fake cheery tone showing my clear disdain for the conversation. "Well it all started with a psychopath called Mister Crow or some pig name I don't quite remember! Breaking into my house and-" I started but Philip interrupted me.
"Can you slow down so I can make notes" Philip replied while he retrieved a small notepad from his inside suit pocket. His tone was still calm clearly not deterred from my borderline sarcastic comments.
"Can I continue?" I asked slightly annoyed.
"Yes" Philip replied as he nodded his head.
"Well my story starts with a psycho called Mister Crow who broke into my house after kinda stalking me, he knocked me out and when I woke up I was in a small room--" I continued but was cut myself off. I was cut off due to a deep fear that overruled my overconfidence and sarcastic tone, revealing my true feelings to Philip who I desperately didn't want to see me weak.
"Alexis this only works if you are honest, so lose the attitude and speak to me properly" Philip requested. In response I gave a slight nod.
I exhaled and inhaled slowly regaining my composure once again. "So umm Mister Crow he kidnapped me" I started.
"How did this 'Mister Crow' kidnap you?" Philip asked in a gentle tone.
"Well he umm hit me I think and took me to the room, well the shipping container" I continued my voice noticeably more shaky.
"What happened in the shipping container?" Philip continued.
"Well all over the walls were pictures" I tried to speak but my mouth ran dry.
"What were the pictures of Alexis?" Philip questioned.
"I- I-" my mouth croaked and I could barely speak. Suddenly, a bottle of water appeared in front of my face held in the grip of Shadow who had now entered the room.
"Here" Shadow motioned waiting for me to take it and gratefully I took the bottle. I unscrewed the lid and took a huge audible gulp from it.
"Thank you" I finally croaked toward Shadow who gave a nod of appreciation.
"Please continue" Philip urged.
"The pictures of me in poses...some of me in his mask, some with him lingering over me but all with me asleep," I finally replied as tears welled in my eyes.
"You obviously escaped the room but how?" Philip continued.
"I didn't" I responded plainly ashamed.
Shadow interjected saving me from admitting my failure to escape "me and Patricia rescued her" in his gruff tone.
"Could you continue with the next big thing to happen to you?" Philip asked in his usual gentle tone.
"Well me and Patricia saw Mister Crow again and he attacked me and it was Patricia who saved me from being shot" I continued.
"Go on" Philip urged as he still noted down things in his notepad.
"Well the next big thing was the woman at Flowers and Flora who was a participant and died in my arms," as I continued as the woman's face flashed in my mind her eyes cold and dead...unmoving.
"Carry on Alexis" Philip urged, snapping me back to reality. It was then I noticed a constant ringing in my ears.
"So the next big event that happened was...the fight with Patricia after she took Elliot hostage" I replied struggling to string all the events together with the constant ringing in my ears.
"Continue" Philip replied plainly.
"Umm next was my latest meeting with Mister Crow where he said that I was his Fox" I explained but the more pressing concern was the ringing that seemed to be emanating from Philip's suit.
"And that brings us to your snap after the name confusion between you and Shadow" Philip stated.
"Is that all the questions then?" I asked.
"Yes unless you wouldn't mind talking about your home life or your family" my heart shuddered as Philip uttered those words and then memories of my mother flashed in my head with feelings of loss.
Quickly, I pushed those thought aside. "So that's the end then!" I suggested wanting to leave.
"No not exactly I may have a solution" Philip said before reaching into his inside pocket.
"What?" I asked curiously as Philip place his notepad inside his pocket and retrieved a small box.
"Take it" Philip said as he handed me the box, I took it and inspected it. The box was the size of a matchbox and wooden in design and feel with a lid on hinges on top and the engraving of brain and a boarder around it all in a varnished brown colour.
"What is it?" I asked holding it in my hand.
"It's a memory box and it does as it name suggests, first you think of a memory you want to forget then open the box and close it and the memory will be gone...easy" Philip explained then he walked over to Shadow.
In my mind I thought of the fear I was feeling and opened the box. On the inside the box was a black lining with nothing else as if I wee staring into a void. Then I closed the box and the fear I felt was miraculously gone!
I turned to Philip and thanked him for the gift then I turned to Shadow and Philip and I smiled genuinely.
"Well I've done all I can so I will be off then" Philip said as he walked to the door.
Shadow and I said our goodbyes and Philip left without another word just a smile.
"So how do you know Philip?" I asked Shadow.
"He was my therapist once" Shadow responded.
"Okay what was that ringing?" I asked Shadow curiously.
"It's part of his 'power'," Shadow stated as he added emphasis on the word 'power'.
"What's his power?" I questioned.
"It's a form of suggestion and is not really a power, it's a frequency that makes any listener susceptible to his questions...that's why he is such a good therapist. He gets to the roots of any problem simply by people listening to him" Shadow explained.
"He would have to be to be your therapist!" I joked back to Shadow.
"True" Shadow agreed.
"Do you think you will go home tonight?" Shadow asked me clearly concerned after the news that I had not slept at home.
"Yeah I think I will" I replied thinking of my father and his worry when I did not tell him where I had been.
"Okay do you want me to take you home?" Shadow asked.
"Yes please and also I would like to be left alone for the rest of today is that okay?" I responded to Shadow.
"Okay sure just get in the van then" Shadow ordered in a kind tone.
So I walked out through the door of The Bunker and into the warehouse, I then walked up to Shadow's van and pulled the passenger's side door open. I sat on the seat alone and waited for about two minutes until Shadow emerged from The Bunker and sat in the driver's side next to me.
"Ready?" Shadow asked me more as an alert to say we were now setting off rather than asking me if I were ready to go.
"Yes" I responded as I sat back in my chair getting comfy.
The ride was short as we drove past many places, but the places were in such a blur that I could barely recognise any of them. Eventually the van stopped and Shadow let me out on the corner near my home.
"Thank you" I told him before leaving the van and shutting the door behind me. I walked quickly home and reached the house, I found my key deep inside my pocket and slid it into the lock and unlocked the door.
My stomach rumbled. In response I meandered into the kitchen and rummaged through the cupboards, inside the cupboard were: cereal, bread, strawberry jam and a few other spreads. I grabbed some thick bread, butter and some strawberry jam. I lathered the butter on top of the bread then added the jam on top.
The meal was short but sweet the jam perfectly complemented the butter and the bread gave enough crunch and solidity to the meal so I didn't take like eating jam with butter alone. After that I sat at home and placed my phone and taser on charge and watched anything that was on TV.
The front door swung open and my father walked in, he looked at me and I looked at him.
"Dad can I ask you something?" I requested of him.
"Okay" he replied his tone slightly nervous but still managing to keep some composure.
I breathed for a second then mustered up the courage an asked "what happened to mom?" The question sent to room into a all consuming silence.
