Chapter 25 | The ledge
"So what's the problem with the treatment?" I asked moving closer toward Shadow.
"Well do you know about Sean's heart condition?" Shadow responded with another question.
"Well yeah kind of, he explained that his heart can't pump mass amounts of blood around his body or else he risks his veins or arteries exploding" I replied sharing my very limited knowledge.
"Well the problem is that the medication that keeps Sean alive doesn't mix well with the medication that creates the coma that I used on Michael" Shadow explained.
"So Sean can't be put into the coma?" I asked confirming my suspicions.
It was then it dawned on me, both I and Shadow had been awkward around each other. Both sides were aggravated and hating each other.
"So does Sean know he can't be put into a coma?" I asked Shadow in a calm tone.
"No--" Shadow tried to speak but was shortly cut off.
"Well I do now!" Sean butted in.
"Oh sorry" I replied without thinking.
"Well for such a small room you would think someone would learn to whisper when having a 'private' conversation!" Sean responded his voice seemingly disheartened but he was trying to hide it.
"Wait so what are you going to do?" Shadow asked in his gruff tone that perpetually sounded angry.
"I guess I can go home" Sean responded saddened by this statement.
"No you can't! Your parents are away and you brother is--" I cut myself short trying not to mention Tom Anderson...the man I killed.
"Yeah I know" Sean responded seeming more disheartened than he was before as though he was spiralling into a deep hole of disappointment and pure despair.
"Well you can stay here" Shadow responded finally.
"I might have too" Sean added wearily.
"Alright go home and collect your things if you're going to stay here" Shadow responded.
"Wait is it safe for Sean out there? With Mister Crow on the loose?" I asked Shadow.
"Mister who!" Shadow responded confused by my question.
"Mister Crow!" I reiterated again.
"The guy that attacked us on the way here" Sean added.
"Are you sure you don't mean Piggy Piggy?" Shadow asked unsure but still spoken in his gruff tone.
"What?" I responded as a pain began to build in the front of my head for some unknown reason.
"Piggy Piggy is the name you gave to the man who attacked you!" Shadow repeated as the pain in my head grew.
"No he told us his name was Mister Crow and how did you know I was attacked? And it wasn't just me Mister Crow attacked Sean was there too!" I responded angrily as the pain in my head quickly grew into a searing headache.
Shadow moved over towards me as he placed his hands on my shoulders. "Alexis the man who attacked and kidnapped you was Piggy Piggy. You said so yourself." Shadow replied with a hint of concern in his voice.
"No- no you are wrong he said his name is Mister Crow and he said I was his Fox- ugh...umm" I tried to speak but my head trembled fiercely in pain until it forced me onto my knees.
"Gaaaaaaaaah!" I screamed in agony as the edges of my vision grew black with tendrils of dark until all my vision dissipated and I fell into unconsciousness as Shadow shook me violently to no avail.
When I awoke my eyelids felt heavy under the pressure of tiredness. To the right of me was the twins Elliot and Sean both with looks of worry plastered on their near identical faces. Meanwhile Shadow was typing away on his computer his gazed completely drawn toward the screen with many words and read outs and other medical readouts that I did not understand.
Slowly, I ease myself up the pain in my head was still there but instead of a sharp pain it was more like a dull ache. Sean quickly ran over to help me by grabbing my left fore arm and in response Elliot did the same with my right fore arm.
Shadow turned round a concerned look on his face.
"What happene--" I tried to ask what happened and why I fell unconscious, but Shadow moved his attention away from the compute screens and shushed me and placed a finger up to my lips.
"What ever you do Alexis, do not an I repeat DO NOT say the name of your attacker!" Shadow commanded in his gruff tone that somehow contained a hint of compassion.
Stunned all I could do in response was give a nod if understanding and with that Shadow removed his finger and let me speak. "So why can't I say Mi--" I stopped myself remembering Shadows stern warning. "Why can't I say his name?" I asked out of confusion.
"Well my current hypothesis is that your encounters with him have caused some sort of trauma and the mere speech of his name cause adverse side effects" Shadow explained.
"Is it permanent?" I asked nervously.
"No well I don't know really but I have a friend who might" Shadow responded, his words made me worry but gave me hope.
"Okay can they help?" I asked unsure and skeptical but honestly I had no reason to be skeptical about Shadow.
"Yes he might be able too" Shadow replied lifting my hopes but only slightly.
"He?" I responded skeptically.
"Yes it is a he" Shadow replied.
"Oh" I replied solemnly almost every man I had met recently turned out to have some sort of secret, would this person be the same.
"So I will call him today and he should be here by tomorrow so it's best if you go home" Shadow replied as he returned to the computers.
"Okay" I responded as I walked over to the door stumbling slightly.
"Do you need a ride home?" Shadow asked moving closer to me as if trying to steady me.
"No thank you are you putting Elliot into the coma?" I asked trying to change the subject.
"Yes now are you sure you don't need a--" Shadow responded as I quickly left The Bunker.
I walked along the streets alone, I knew it was dangerous to be alone with 'that man' out there but I'd had enough I needed to just let all the emotion I had been feeling out. The night had started to grow dark but not before the sky became coloured with reds and oranges spreading from the sun set.
I walked around Pine Wood Valley lonely the feelings inside myself boiling over until I could barely stand it. All day I had been lashing out I needed a release from it all.
I walked until I reached the town hall at least three stories tall, the building was a light grey colour almost white with windows evenly spaced along each story with a double set of doors on the first floor. None of the architecture mattered to me I walked around the back of the building to the silver stairs that led up.
I slowly walked up the first flight of stairs I had started to notice the cold night air made my skin shiver and grow goosebumps due to the cold. As I walked up the second set of stairs the air grew colder and the fatigue in my muscles increased. As I ascended the final set of stairs the cold was so great I could see the breath in front of my face as I reached the roof of the town hall.
The roof had a slight gravel covering it and many vents protruding from the building. I walked to the edge of the building and stood on the thin ledge.
If I fell from that height I would surely die. It may take some time but I would die.
I swayed gently.
I reached my leg over edge ready to fall.
I screamed at the top of my lungs! Birds in the distance were disturbed and flew into the sky while animal screeched in response as though I called out to them.
I carried on screaming until my lungs emptied and my vocal chords just screeched out loud.
Finally, my scream reached it end and sat on the roof before finally laid down on the soft gravel littered on the roof and closed my eyes out of exhaustion.
