Chapter 20 | The clues

Fear filled my body, at the moment of seeing that the message was from 'unknown'. The thought filled me with dread. It was all because of one name: Piggy Piggy.

But I didn't want to let the fear of a simple name rule my life. So confidently I opened the message...the message read as follows 'Hello Alexis, this is Shadow if you still need help with deciphering the clues then I want you to come to my base of operations at 6:00p.m.'

My fears had been put at ease after the realisation that this was Shadow responding to my previous message, rather than Piggy Piggy taunting or threatening me.

Reassured I immediately replied to the message with 'Yes I'll try to be there by six or ten minutes later.'

After sending the message I got undressed from my work clothes and then put on a pair of blue jeans and a plain dark blue shirt. I grabbed my phone, the PTD, pocket knife and my taser.

Next, I walked out my home not telling my father where I going so I would most have to lie to him. I caught a bus and got as close as I could to The Bunker (which was my nickname for Shadow's base) and walked the rest of the way, when I arrived at Shadow's base it was now six fourteen p.m. and the sky was growing dark with a red hue.

I walked inside the large warehouse where The Bunker was located, then I walked past Shadow's black van that he used for commuting. I opened the trap door that led to a small set of stairs leading to the heavy door to The Bunker.

Cautiously, I proceeded to knock hard on the door causing my knuckles to become slightly reddened. But thankfully within a short time the heavy door swung open to reveal Shadow in his classical suit.

"Hi shads!" I joked to Shadow, abbreviating his name.

"Come on Alexis" Shadow replied in a serious tone as he beckoned me inside.

We then walked inside The Bunker to see the usual medial tables and weapons rack and computer against one of the walls and large matt in the middle for sparring matches but upon one wall was sat a white desk against a wall with a board on it. Shadow led me over to the table with the board.

"So what are the clues for the location of the deactivation button?" Shadow questioned almost impatiently.

I then got out my PTD to remind myself of the clues and spoke "Alright the first clue was the number nineteen severity eight, and I think it's a date."

"Okay" Shadow replied as he wrote the number on a piece of paper and pinning it to the board on the wall. He then continued to speak "what was the next clue?"

"The second clue was nineteen seventy six and I think this one is definitely a date" I responded confidently.

"Okay" Shadow responded as he again wrote the number on a piece of paper and attached it to the board.

"That's all the clues I have but the second clue led me to a picture" I explained bringing up the pictures of the photo on my phone and handing it to Shadow.

Shadow grabbed my phone and stared at it intently then he walked over to his computer and using a cable, plugged my phone into the computer and clicked a few buttons and two pictures started to print out.

The first picture was a cropped version of the front of the photo showing the town sign a whole five years before the town was founded, the second picture was of the back photo showing the date the picture was taken.

Shadow walked back over to the board where I was still stood and pinned the two print outs to the board.

"Is that all you have found Alexis?" Shadow asked.

"Yeah, have you got any ideas what it means?" I questioned back.

"I might have, am I correct in thinking this town was founded in the year nineteen eighty one?" Shadow asked to clarify his knowledge.

"Yes" I responded.

"Well clearly this photo you found should not exist but somehow it does?" Shadow half stated and half asked himself.

"Yeah I knew that" I responded.

Shadow walked over to his computer and started to look at images. Eventually he came back over with a print out in his hand.

"Do you know what this is?" He questioned as he held up the print out that showed a black spot with areas of land around it.

"No why what significant?" I asked.

"Well this is the town back in nineteen seventy eight and nineteen seventy six" he responded excitedly as if proud of what he found.

"Why is it just a black mark then?" I asked.

"Because back then it was some sort of government censored base meaning they had to block it out to cover up what they were doing!" Shadow explained.

"So this somehow relates to the button location?" I presumed.

"Yes" Shadow responded confidently.

"How?" I responded confusion clear in my voice.

"Well it means that the foundations of the town were built before nineteen eighty one!" Shadow replied as If I should understand what he meant.

"So?" I questioned.

"So that means that the button is located somewhere in the old foundations of the town," Shadow responded as my mind started to put the clues together.

"So we can rule out any buildings built after nineteen eighty one right" I chimed in.

"Yes correct and I'm pretty sure these clues may lead me to the deactivation button" Shadow replied an aura of confidence encompassing his words.

"That's amazing!" I ecstatically replied.
"Also I wanted to tell you about something I thought was weird?" I continued.

"Okay go on!" Shadow replied.

"Well I was in the woods behind my friend Lizzie's house and we reached the river all the water was gone. So being the bored people we were we tap danced on the rocks but suddenly the river flooded nearly washing Patricia away!" I explained.

"Well that is weird but could have been caused by a multitude of factors," Shadow reassured.

"So it's nothing to be worried about?" I asked trying to reassure myself.

"Yes I would not be worried Alexis" Shadow reassured putting all my fears aside.

"Thanks, I was thinking not only am I in a killing name but dies water hate me too!" I joked back.

"No that is definitely not a problem. Do you want me to drop you off at home?" Shadow asked.

"Yeah sure!" I replied not wanting to walk home alone.

"Okay come on!" Shadow replied as he walked to the door and opened it, letting me through. He then followed me and locking it behind him, I walked up the stairs and walked to the passenger side of Shadow van as he got in the van and I did the same.

We began our journey back to my house and as usual after the twists and turns back home in complete silence Shadow stopped on the side of the road a short walk to my home.

"Thank you" I said to Shadow as he gave a nod in response, then I exited the van and began my walk home.

The walk home was short and sweet, the streets were dimly lit by the towering street lamps and in the beams of light little insects danced and fluttered in mystifying patterns, the ground beneath my feet was the usual paths tarmac, from the bushes and trees that I passed I could hear a methodical swaying amongst the darkness.

Eventually, I reached my home after no eventful incident the walk was completely peaceful and I needed it.

Upon entering my home I was greeted by warmth caressing my skin.
I walked upstairs.

"Hi honey- actually where have you been Alexis?" Dad shouted from the living room.

"Hi Dad I'm tired goodnight," my response was minimalistic and spoke with little enthusiasm.

"Fine okay goodnight" Dad shouted back from within the living room.

I collapsed onto my bed and instead of getting undressed I got out my phone and set an alarm for tomorrow morning, then I drifted off into a peaceful slumber.

My dreams filled with meaningless and seemingly unrelated events that made no chronological order but were better than a horrific nightmare.
