Prologue

NO POV:

???: Stephen King once wrote that "Nightmares exist outside of logic, there's little fun to be had in explanations; they're antithetical to the poetry of fear". In a horror story, the victim keeps asking "Why?" But there can be no explanation, and there shouldn't be one. the unanswered mystery is what stays with us the longest, and is what we'll remember in the end. My name is Adrian Wake. I'm a writer, just like my dad.

In an unknown and surreal place, a man is in a cabin and sitting at a desk, using a typewriter. The desk has a nameplate that says "Alan Wake" on it. Alan is typing like a man possessed, writing a story titled "Initiation".

Alan: For years I have been fighting in the Dark Place. Trying to write a way to escape. Words become reality and it can affect the real world as well. I trapped myself here so that my wife and son could escape. But I fear that the Dark Presence is regaining its hold on reality as it did before. Adrian and Alice have been getting by, but their relationship is strained due to Alice's uncertainty as a mother. This was a dramatic change as Alice wanted to spend every moment with our son. But being kidnapped by the Darkness, returning to a world that spouts nothing but rumors about me, and inability to look at Adrian has caused my son to become alone. Adrian managed to regain some assurance in himself after me and Thomas Zane gave him the gun, but he's still alone. I tried to write a good life for Adrian, but every word I have involving the details of his life disappears. I can write the details of a situation here and there, but the rest of the words end up writing themselves as if Adrian is the real one in control. This only gives me more faith in my son, who I wish strength to protect himself and Alice.

In New York, Adrian returns to his apartment and sees a note from his mom saying "I'll be back around 5". Adrian sighs and goes to his room. Adrian puts his backpack on the floor, pulls out a newspaper, and pulls out a key. Adrian pokes the key against his closet and opens it to enter a large area filled with notes, pictures, and newspapers. Adrian grabs a tack and puts the newspaper on the board regarding Bright Falls. The paper says "People missing in past weeks. Where are they?". Adrian leaves the space and closes the door before opening it again to see a regular closet.

Adrian: Must always check to make sure it works right.

Adrian smells something cooking and realizes that his mom has returned home.

Adrian: Let's see what else she has tonight this time.

Adrian passes Alice and goes into the living room to turn on the TV. He sees himself on the news regarding an amateur writer's contest he entered a few weeks ago.

Newswoman: The winner of the amateur writer's contest is none other than Adrian Wake. Son of best-selling author, Alan Wake.

Newsman: Yeah for now. But knowing Wake, his son won't have a spot in the spotlight for too long.

Adrian clenches his fist from the statement.

Newsman: Sure Adrian Wake might write a few decent books, then he'll end up having writer's block for years and then disappear like his old man.

The TV suddenly turns off and Adrian sees Alice's reflection on the screen.

Adrian: I was watching that.

Alice doesn't say anything about that statement and looks away.

Alice: I'm meeting with an old friend tonight. I made hamburgers. See you in the morning.

Adrian sighs and looks away.

Adrian: Take it easy and don't get yourself into trouble.

Alice stays silent and leaves. Adrian hears the door close and goes to the dining room to eat his food.

At the Stray Sheep bar, Alice is talking with a friend she hasn't seen for years.

Alice: So you're the Director, Jesse?

Jesse: Yes. it took a while to get everything fixed, but now the Bureau is back on track. How's your son?

Alice stays silent as she tries to find the right words.

Alice: He reminds me of his father, but I can't look him in the eyes. I keep being reminded of how this never would have happened if I'd just let Alan be.

Jesse: I've heard talk from my agents that everyone has started to speak out that Alan Wake had it coming, he was a criminal, suicide, and Adrian is going to end up exactly like him.

Alice: I saw one of his notebooks saying nothing but horrible things about Adrian. But I don't know what to say.

Jesse: Then you got to find something else for him. You can't keep things like this forever.

Alice looks down at her food in silence.

Jesse: I got to go pee. Don't leave.

Jesse gets up as Alice still looks at her food. Someone comes and sits in front of her. It was a beautiful woman with rather fine clothing.

???: You look rather down today. Mind telling me what it is? I love to help people wherever I can.

Alice: Who are you?

???: Right, how rude of me not to introduce myself to you. My name is Lenore. You're Alice Wake, right?

Alice: Yes. How did you know?

Lenore: You and your son were in every single newspaper since that day when your husband disappeared.

Alice: Would. You. Just. Drop. It.

Lenore: I meant what I said about helping people. You and I know your son is much more than a young writer.

Alice opens her eyes in surprise, knowing what the woman is saying.

Lenore: You've seen it yourself when he didn't notice. Appearing in one place or another but still back at home on the same day. Piles of notes appear within a mere second while he's writing something else.

Alice: What do you want?

Lenore: To give you both an option.

Lenore pulls out a pamphlet and gives it to Alice. Alice sees the name "Yokai Academy" on it and opens it to see information that you'd find in regular school.

Lenore: This academy is for special children and is run by a friend of mine. It's for them to harness their talents and abilities while preparing them to be fit for society. It's in Japan, but it might be a nice change of scenery. And the best part about it is that no one has heard of Alan Wake. So your son may have a clean slate there.

Alice is intrigued by the offer and is tempted to accept it, but is still unsure.

Lenore: I know this is awfully promising and I get you're a bit hesitant. But Adrian may actually have a normal life. He could actually make friends. The entrance is in a month. Just think about it. There's no catch or tricks in this offer. Have a good night Alice Wake

Lenore leaves and Alice looks at the pamphlet, unable to resist such an offer for both her and her son. Alice sees Jesse coming and puts the pamphlet in her pocket.

Jesse: Sorry, that took longer than expected.

Alice: No worries.

Jesse: So, you got anything in mind for this?

Alice: I'll have one soon.

The next day, Adrian returns home and sees his mom at the dining table. Adrian opens his door and sees a Japanese learning book on his desk. He goes to the table and sits in front of Alice

Adrian: Mom? What did I do wrong this time?

Alice: Nothing. I just met someone last night. She told me about this school and How it's for special kids. The subjects and learning are the exact same as your school, it's just to help students with their abilities and prepare them for the world. I know you are prepared for the world, it's just this school is not one for outside information, so no one will knwo about you. I thought that you can feel normal if you go here.

Alice puts the pamphlet on the table and Adrian looks at it. Adrian reads through it before looking at Alice and sees how much she hopes he'll accept it. Adrian feels Alice has been stressed about keeping his father's memory alive and raising her son. He also hopes that he can feel more normal at this school than his current one. Adrain sighs before giving his answer.

Adrian: I'll... I'll take it. When does it start?

Alice: In a month. Might be enough time to learn enough Japanese until then.

Adrian: Okay. I'll read that book and prepare.

Alice: Don't force yourself.

Adrian: I won't.

Adrian goes to his room and lies on his bed.

Adrian: What do you think Prometheus?

Adrian: Yeah. There's no way this will be a "normal" school. But I could do without the gossip. And I could make things a little easier for mom. Get ready for a Japanese High School adventure.

1 month later

Adrian is in Japan in his school uniform and waiting for the bus. It arrives and the door opens, revealing the driver with a spooky face. Adrian doesn't mind and puts on his headphones and plays music. Adrian gets on the bus and walks past another student before sitting down. The bus moves as it heads into a tunnel.

Alan: Adrian gets on the bus heading for Yokai Academy, passing by another student heading for that destination before taking his seat. The bus enters a tunnel and travels to a whole other dimension. What awaits Adrian is uncertain, except that he'll be the one to write his story. He is Adrian Wake, and he will see his father again.

Alan hears a noise and looks to see words forming on a blank piece of paper. Alan picks up the sheet and sees "Resolve" by Adrian Wake. Alan then sheds tears at the sight of this and puts it next to him as he continues to write "Initiation".
