3.7; "I promise."
R I L E Y
I walked over to my couch, as I carried a few suitcases in my hands to my dad. My mom and dad, and Auggie, were going to my aunts for the weekend. I couldn't go, because I have to stay to do my science project here with Lucas, since it was due Monday. Honestly I wasn't upset that I couldn't go, I'd much rather have a weekend to myself, with no stress or anxiety.
"Okay, all of our phone numbers are pinned up on the fridge, even though you have them in your phone, anyway. Food is in the cabinets and Maya and her grandma are obviously right above you, don't stay out late and-" I cut my mom off so she could breathe. "I'll be fine, mom. I got it." I giggled with a smile. My mom instantly let out a sigh of relief, with a slight chuckle. My dad came up behind her, as he took her hand. They both smiled at me.
"We know you will. Be safe. I love you." My mom spoke, as she kissed the side of head and engulfed me into a hug, until I felt like I semi-couldn't breathe. "M-mom-can't b-b-" "Let her go, women, you're suffocating her!" Auggie suddenly exclaimed, as he made his way in-between me and my mom. My mom let go and we all laughed.
I bent down and gave Auggie a hug. "Have fun." I whispered to him, before I walked over and gave my dad a hug. They made there way finally out the door, before I waved them off.
"Love you!" My dad said, as they started walking down the hall. "Love you too." I laughed, as I waved goodbye before shutting the door.
I turned around, to look at the silent apartment before me. I lightly smiled. I get a whole weekend to myself, literally.
Well, me and.. Lucas.
Lucas.
I quickly pulled out my phone, to check the time.
7:25.
"Shit! I'm going to be late." I mentally cursed myself. I quickly rushed into my room to grab my backpack, before I rushed out the door to head to the subway.
.........
I began to shuffle through my locker, as I struggled to set my one hundred pound science books above me. I let out a murmur in distress, as I barely managed to lift my books. Hey, it wasn't my fault, they were legit like one hundred pound books.
Suddenly, I felt a hand creep up to the small of back, making goosebumps arise allover my body. It felt like all of the oxygen and air were being sucked out of my body, I was unable to breath.
I knew who it was. With just one touch, he made my soul burn with fire, passion. With just one touch, I could tell who it was without even looking to see him. He's the only one who as ever made me feel like this after all.
Suddenly, the weight was lifted off of my shoulders as he placed my books above for me, his hand lightly grazing against mine.
I let go, and turned around. I felt my back lay against the lockers behind me, the space between me and Lucas began to close slightly. I stared into his mesmerizing eyes that I could look at for hours, and find something new in them every second.
Not one word. We haven't said one word to each other yet.
He fixated his eyes on me, but I could see his eyes trail from my eyes down to my lips. My breathing increased, and I couldn't help but stare at his either.
He was absolutely beautiful, a beautiful angel.
"T-Thank you." I managed to choke out, as I lightly gulped. Suddenly, he gently smiled, before backing away slightly. Caught up in the moment? Maybe. Did I mind it? Not at all. I felt a blush creep upon my cheeks.
"Anytime." He spoke, before he stared at me again. I had always wondered why he looked at me like that, "Why do you look at me that way?" I suddenly asked, my curiosity clearly getting the best of me. He lightly chuckled, before looking at me again. Dammit, I can feel my knees getting weak.
"I'm not just looking at you," He replied. I furrowed my eyebrows. "What?" I queried. He took another step closer, and my heart began to race.
"It's much more than that." He whispered. i was still utterly confused, and he could tell, so he smiled.
"I guess I see something more than just a person." He spoke softly. I blanky stared at him, what was that supposed to me?
Oh my darling, you have no idea what that means. When he looks at you, he see's the stars, my dear. After all stars can only shine in the darkness, and it's an absolute perfect combination. Maybe one day you will figure it out.
He knew that I still barely understood, so he gave me a light smile, before he turned to walk away, but I called after him.
"Hey!" I shouted, and he quickly turned back around, furrowing his eyebrows this time. I smiled.
"Come to my house at seven, to study." I say. He suddenly smirked, and I let out a light laugh. Just like the old Lucas.
"Sounds perfect." He replied, and my heart began to race along with the millions of butterflies flying around my stomach.
We stared at each other for a moment more, before his lips curved upward, and he turned around to head back to his next class.
I leaned back, before I closed my locker. I leaned against it, as I couldn't keep the smile and blush off of my face.
I suddenly heard my phone ding, and I quickly looked down to it.
From: Lucas <3
' Can't wait ;) '
I shook my head, as I looked at the message with a smile. Just like forever ago.
I lightly giggled, before I pulled my bag back onto my shoulder and headed for my next class.
.........
I lied down on my bed, as I stared up at the ceiling.
6:45.
6:50.
6:55.
6:59.
I sighed, as I waited. Riley, you are delusional, he isn't going to be here the second it turns seven.
7:00.
I swiftly sprung from my bed, to walk out into the living room. No knock, not ring. Duh, obviously Riley he isn't going to be here at exact, you are insane.
I decided to lie down on my couch, as I waited a bit longer. Why was I worrying about this so much? Just relax, Riley.
Time passed on, and he still wasn't here. I didn't want to bother him, so I didn't call or text him.
It was now 45 minutes after seven, and I was beginning to worry. I went to go grab my science textbooks for our project, as I started shuffling through my bag. I didn't see them at all.
"Oh shoot." I slapped my forehead. They were in my locker, and I have to have them! Crap.
I looked down to my phone, before a caller ID suddenly popped up. It was Lucas, so I quickly answered.
"Hello?" I said, with a little bit of distress in my voice. How could I possibly forget about the textbooks?
"Hey, Riley." I suddenly heard Lucas' soothing voice, which made me relax a bit more. "I um-wanted to call and tell you that I can't be there tonight. I'm sorry." He added on. I felt my heart sink, he was ditching me?
"O-Oh okay.." I replied quietly, waiting for some sort of explanation, but he never said so. "I got to go, I'll call you tomorrow." Lucas said, before he quickly hung up.
Something about his voice didn't sound right, but I shook it off. He didn't even tell me why? I groaned, before falling back down onto my bed behind me.
I knew I had to at least start the project, but I didn't have my textbooks, which meant I would have to go to the school tonight.
"Ugh." I said. Yes, I was slightly pissed at Lucas. Only because he didn't tell me why he couldn't come. But I have to go get the textbooks.
I stood up and grabbed my jacket and keys, before heading out of the doors and locking it behind me. Last thing I wanted to be doing was go to my school late at night on the weekend, wonderful.
...........
The school doors on Friday evenings were unlocked until 9, for janitor and student purposes. Thank goodness it wasn't Monday or else I would be screwed.
I walked into the front doors, as most of the lights were turned off. It was weird, I haven't ever been at school when it was night, and almost the whole school was unlit.
I began to walk down the hall, silently. It was slightly creepy. Some lights turned on as I walked, like it was a censor. I turned up a staircase, to get to the hall that had my locker and textbooks. I instantly put in my locker combination, before I grabbed the one textbook I just needed for tonight. Still, one book felt like 50 pounds, how heavy can paper possibly be.
I shut my locker, before I turned around to start to walk down the stairs, before I suddenly stopped. I turned my head, looking down the halls. I didn't see any of the janitors, and my curiosity began to grow.
I stepped backwards, before I decided to explore the halls at night. Why the hell not, I mean what harm can it do?
I walked over to one of the senior classrooms, as I pushed the door slightly open. The moonlight was illuminating the dark, somber room. Everything was so silent.
I walked over and read allover the chalkboard, seeing that some students had wrote down messages and I laughed at some of them, sneaky, might have to use that one.
I walked around the desks, as I looked around. Everything seemed so much different when nobody was here and it was silent. I looked at the huge globe that was sitting on the desk, as I smiled. History was definitely my favorite class, and even though this wasn't my classroom I still loved looking at the different places in the world on the globe.
Suddenly, I heard a light closing sound, which made me instantly drop the book I was holding from the classroom in fright. I covered my mouth, before I let out a sigh. It was probably just the janitor.
I put back the history book back before I grabbed my science book once more. I quickly tip toed out of the room, closing the door slightly behind me. I walked into another classroom, which was my photography class.
I still had the class with Lucas, and I was glad that I did. I walked over to our desk, as I looked at all the pictures hanging on the walls.
Me and Lucas were up there, and I never knew. I stared at the picture in awe, before a smile made its way to my face.
It was of us dancing in the paint, we had gotten an A+ on that project. She said it was our best one, and I could agree most definitely.
I looked at the photo, noticing things that I never did before.
"The way he looks at you, is astonishing. It's like your his muse."
"I don't understand." I lightly laughed.
"I've seen the same look, the same inspiration in different people's eyes before. But him, never in my lifetime have I ever seen what's in his eyes when he looks at you, ever in someone else's. It's very different."
I stood there silently, not knowing what to say. What does this all mean?
"Keep up the good work." My photography teacher spoke, with a smile, before she headed out the door.
I stood there puzzled.
That memory from long ago flashed in my mind. I still didn't understand, or maybe I did, but it seemed to unrealistic. He couldn't love me, could he? Does he?
As I stared at the picture longer, I began to question everything. The way I was looking at him, the way he was looking at me.
It seemed like a couple, that was just in l-...
"Love." I whispered, slightly gasping.
Suddenly, I heard a light bang, which made me quickly turn around. My mind instantly trailed off to the sound of my heart pumping in my chest.
I began to get more freaked out by the moment of being alone, in the slightly dark classroom. My mind was starting to make things up, or the janitor wherever he was, was just really loud.
I quickly walked out of the classroom, shutting the door behind me again, to make it seem like nobody was here. I held my science book close, as the goosebumps arise on my body. I started to make my way out of the school, before I stopped myself, as I saw a light beaming down a hallway. Dammit, curse my curious mind.
I slowly trailed my way over to the light, which was a glass case full of artwork and trophies.
And suddenly, I saw me and Lucas' dancing painting hung there, and I never knew it was there before. I smiled, at the perfect colorful lines connecting on the canvas.
It was perfect.
I stared it once more, before I heard a loud clap. My heart instantly began to race, so I quickly turned around to head towards the door, but once I cut corner, I saw someone standing in front of the doors.
My stomach suddenly felt sick, and the fright was taking over. The figure was tall, and pitched black, before they suddenly moved into the light.
It was Conner.
I furrowed my eyebrows, as I took a step back. What the hell was he doing here?
"Conner?" I spoke, cautiously. Was he the one making all the sounds? Conner suddenly smirked, with a light chuckle. I held my book closer.
"Well well, who do we have here?" Conner chuckled, as he started to walk towards me from a bit away. I backed up a bit more. "What the hell are you doing here?" I spat, my stomach feeling more nauseous by the second. He just shook his head, before looking at me smugly.
"I told you I would get you back, you put me in detention for a week." He snarled. I held back my breath, wondering what he meant by the few words he was saying. Nonetheless, I was scared.
"What are you talking about?" I replied, shouting a bit more. He just began to laugh again, before he stared me dead straight in the eyes.
"Payback." Is all he said, before two guys suddenly came up behind him that were not here before. They stared at me also, with evil smirks.
I suddenly felt every bone in my shake, as my eyes widened in fear. I began to hyperventilate, as they all started to make there way towards me.
I didn't know what to do, I had no idea what they were going to do to me. I just knew I had to run, but it was like I was stuck in one place, so scared that I couldn't move. They were suddenly so close, that I finally found the strength to drop the book in my hands, as I swiftly turned around and began to ran.
"Come back here, bitch!" Conner shouted behind me. My heart was pounding like never before, and I could feel the tears arise as I rushed up the stairs as fast as possible. I cut around the corner, as I heard them tumbling behind me. The tears rushed down my cheeks as I quickly cut another corner, to a door. I began banging and pushing on the door but it wouldn't open.
"No." I whispered to myself, It must be past 9. The whole school must be locked.
"There you are." I heard Conner say from behind, and I quickly turned around, seeing the three guys race towards me. I shook my head, before I looked to my right and saw a hallway. I raced down that way, shrieking as I did so.
"Stop!" I screamed, as they chased after me as fast they could. I don't think I have ever ran so fast in my entire life. Fear controls your whole body, and you can't do anything about it. I knew if I ran any faster I would begin to have an anxiety attack, so I raced into a classroom that I saw the door open to, and I hid behind a wall silently.
I could hear their fast footsteps race past the classroom, so I let out a sigh of relief. The tears were still pooled around my eyes, and I could hear shouts now come from a bit away. I covered my mouth, before I knew it was safe to walk out, but once I did so, I felt myself get pounced against the wall.
"I knew you were hiding in here." The guy smirked smugly. I quickly took my knee and kneed him in the nuts, which made him collapse to the ground in pain.
"You bitch!" He shouted as he clutched onto himself in pain. I shook my head, before I turned around, and began to run even faster. I rushed down the staircase, and turned towards the lockers. That was until I saw Conner and one of his friends spin around, and glare at me.
"You can't run forever, Riley!" He snarled, before they began to run after me again.
The tears quickly rushed down my face, I've never felt this scared in my entire life.
"Come back here!" He screamed behind me, as they began to gain. I turned my head slightly behind me, and saw the guy I kicked was with them now, racing after me.
I began to cry even harder, before I ran into the science room. I fell down onto the floor, tripping myself before I accidentally slid underneath a table.
I stay curled up into a ball, as I covered my mouth. They must have not seen me, because I heard the door lightly creak open. I sat up silently, as I kept my hand covered over my mouth. I felt the tears rush down from my eyes and onto my hand. Please, I need Lucas. I need my Lucas.
I heard a chair get thrown across the room, which made my heart pound faster as I slightly jumped, and my eyes close. They were all in here, I could see the shadows of their footsteps from underneath the table.
"I know you're in here, slut." Conner spoke, as I heard their footsteps wallow around the room.
Lucas.
Lucas can save me,
I quickly pulled my phone out of my back pocket silently, as I began to dial Lucas. I pressed the phone tightly against my ear, keeping my hand covered across my mouth. Another tear fell from my eye.
I suddenly heard the phone click.
"Hello?"
Lucas spoke. I opened my eyes in relief. Right as I was about to whisper something, a huge bang came from behind me.
"Come out!" Conner screamed, before I heard all three of them throw glass bottles and chairs around, which made me silently cry even more.
"Riley?! Whats going on?" Lucas suddenly exclaimed into the phone, and I didn't want to speak because I didn't want them to hear me.
And It suddenly became silent.
I didn't hear any footsteps,
No voices.
It was dead silent.
All I could hear was my heart pumping in chest. I slowly released my hand from my mouth, as one last tear fell.
"Riley?" Lucas whispered, and suddenly the table around me was thrown to the ground.
"Lucas!" I exclaimed, before my phone slipped out of my hand. I reached over and grabbed some glass jars, as I threw them in front of all three of them.
"You son of bitch!" Conner shouted, before I quickly reached over and grabbed my phone. I raced over towards the doorway that led to emergency stairs. I flung the door open, and quickly ran down it. I could hear them from behind me.
"You're going to get it!" One of them shouted, before I ran out of another door which led me to a hallway full of lockers.
I suddenly heard them come up behind me, and I felt my knees cave in. I was suddenly slammed against a locker, Conner was pressed up against me as he covered my mouth, while the others held my arms and legs.
I began to cry, shake and squirm vigorously. Conner just stared at me in the eyes, as he chuckled in a disgusting tone. His eyes were so dark, darker than anyone's eyes I have ever seen before. He was full of so much anger.
I couldn't scream, his hand was covering my mouth which left me un-capable. I couldn't move either, I was stuck. I have never felt this scared in my entire life.
Suddenly, Conner stroked his finger down my cheek, as he stared into my eyes. "Poor, innocent Riley Matthews. What am I ever going to possibly do with you?" He smirked evilly. I began to shake my head as the tears rushed down my face. I tried screaming but his grip was too tight.
He smirked at me one last time.
"Do it." He just spoke, before I suddenly felt them all tug on my clothes. I began to try and scream again, as I felt him release his grip on my mouth, "P-Please d-don't." I managed to choke out, as I cried even harder. He smirked, as he tried shoving his lips against mine. I bit his lip tightly, which made him step back with a grunt.
His lip was bleeding, which made him look at me in anger. "You bitch." He shouted, before he pushed me against the locker even harder, as the back on my head hit it against it harshly. More tears rushed in as they all three pulled apart my clothes, pushing me, pulling me.
I could only cry, I was incapable of anything else. I just closed my eyes, as I just waited for the pain to be over. They pushed and shoved me, but luckily I was able to keep them from pulling any of my clothes off besides my jacket.
My mind felt dizzy, my body felt weak. I was going to pass out, due to my anxiety, oh please no.
I felt myself slowly start to blank out, as I suddenly felt Conner and the two guys get pulled away from me instantly. I suddenly felt my body collapse to the ground.
My eyes began to slowly open, as I let out a silent breath. I only saw Conner and his friends lying on the ground a few feet away from me, hardly moving.
I suddenly felt myself get swept up into someones arms, as the tears fell from my eyes. I looked up, teary green eyes looking down into mine.
"Riley." Lucas whispered, as he held my face with his hand. I couldn't say anything, I was in a breathless state.
Lucas said nothing else, he just quickly carried me out of the school, before my eyes closed.
.................
I silently sat on the couch in Zay and Lucas' house. Lucas said that he was staying with Zay and Zay's dad while he tried to find another place.
I stay wrapped up in a blanket, as I stared at the blank space in front of me. I felt, cold, unsafe. My mind was racing with memories of earlier as I tried to forget, as I tried to hold back the never ending tears.
I suddenly heard footsteps, which made my head turn behind me. I saw Lucas standing there, holding a cup. He walked over, sitting by me on the couch.
"Here's some water.. I thought it might help." He spoke gently, as he handed me the glass. I looked at him, before taking a light sip of the cold liquid. I instantly coughed, as I set it down on the table. He glanced back over to me, worry flashing in eyes in every moment.
I bit the side of my lip, as I looked down to my lap, trying to hold myself back from crying. I was so tired of crying!
"Are you okay?" He said softly, as he brushed his finger across my cheek. I shook my head.
"You were really gone this time." I looked up to Lucas, my eyes not blinking once as they filled with water. Every time a tear fell, it felt like salt dripping down my face, burning. It hurt so bad.
"No." He whispered, as his eyes began to fill with tears also. I looked over to my side, down to my lap, before I looked back into his eyes again.
"Where were you, Lucas?" I cried. He looked at me with so much pain in his eyes in that moment, his lip quivered.
"I never meant to leave you, I was trying to get some things sorted out here. I'm so sorry." He whispered softly, voice wavering.
I looked down to my lap, as I wiped my tears.
I suddenly felt his hand grasp around my leg, as his other hand laced through one of mine. My eyes trailed up to his.
"I promise you, I will never leave you." He whispered, holding onto me so tightly, so safely.
I barely smiled, as a tear fell from my eye. I didn't want to say much more, I needed to just feel his embrace. I scooted closer towards him, as he pulled me into his arms, wrapping his arms around me tightly. I began to slightly close my eyes, before I heard the words;
"I promise."
.......
