Chapter No. 4

(Sigherra’s POV)

I closed my locker and when I turned around I was face to face with Polar.

“Gah!” I shrieked, “You scared me!”

Polar smiled innocently and held something behind her back. “What are you afraid of?” She asked, looking me straight in the eye, “Dolls… knives… spiders… DEATH?” She asked and pulled a large meat knife from behind her back.

“Let’s play a little game, shall we?” Polar asked and took a step towards me, “How about a little game of cat and mouse. I’m the cat and you're the mouse. When I catch you, you DIE!” Polar shrieked and lunged at me with the knife like a cat.

I had two options. One, being running around the school hopelessly, and two, jumping out a window and hanging to the edge of the mountain for dear life.

I choose option one. I’d rather NOT risk falling off the edge of a mountain. I ran down the hallway as fast as I could while being chased by Polar.

I could already imagine the knife slicing into my skin, my life seeping away as the metallic scent of scarlet blood filled the air as my blood stained my clothes, skin, and the ground.

“What is wrong with you?!” I asked as I ran, “You used to be normal! You used to be nice!”

“Zoro was right, there IS something wrong with you!” I said and bolted up the stairs.

“Normal? Huh. That’s something I’ve never been and never will be.” Polar said, cackling like a witch.

I ran faster up the stairs and once I reached the landing, I looked around for a place to hide. I noticed that the janitors closet was partially open and darted into it.

I heard Polar singing a creepy song under her breath as she walked by, swinging the knife.

“One two, I’m comin’ for you. Three four, better lock the door. Five six, better pick up sticks. Nine ten, never breathe again.” She sang, in a creepy voice that sent shivers up my spine, “I’m coming for you Sigherra.” She said in a singsong whisper.

She started singing again, but this time it was an even creepier song.

“Drip drop. The sound of blood from your fingertips dripping into a puddle of blood on the floor by your feet. Chop chop. The sound of a knife slicing through your skin.” The horrid song went on and on and my heart raced faster and faster as she continued to sing.

Once she was by the door she stopped abruptly and the knife in her hand shone silver in the dim light.

“I know you're in their Sigherra.” She whispered in an icy voice that made my blood stop cold, “And i’m going to make sure that red is the last colour you see.”

I frantically looked around and spotted the vent partially open.

I quickly climbed a shelf and climbed into the vent, shutting it silently but firmly behind me. As I crawled through the vent, I was vaguely aware of the spider webs and long legged, hairy, disgusting spiders climbing around me.

“Gross, gross, gross, gross, gross.” I whispered over and over and over again until I fell out of the vent and tumbled down cold, stone stair steps.

A sentence from my favourite book flashed through my mind.

‘Stairs to break your neck on’

I grabbed hold of the edge of one of the steep, icy cold stone stair steps. I felt skin tear and realized with a start that I had cut my hands while tumbling down the steep staircase,

I stood up shakily and looked down. The stairs went on forever, it seemed. I couldn’t see the bottom of the staircase, all I saw was darkness, swallowing the rest of the stairs.

I was about to go back up the stairs when I heard voices calling for help. “Help us! Let us out! Please! Someone! Anyone! Help!” Several voices screeched frantically and I recognized the voices of my friends.

“I’m coming!” I called and carefully ran down the stairs. It took about ten minutes to get all the way down the stairs, and by the time I reached the bottom I was gasping for air.

“Sigherra?!” Several voices called out in surprise and I looked around, seeing dozens upon dozens of cells full of hybrids.

So THAT’S why the hallways were so empty!

I spotted the cell my friends were in and cried out when I saw a terrifying looking hybrid.

“Calm down Sigh, It’s only Cameron.” Azura, Crystal, Violet, Blizzy and Zoro said in unison. Cameron gave a small, friendly wave and I looked around for the cell key.

Talk about cliche. The key was in the most obvious spot ever. JUST out of reach of the people in the cells. “Who did this and how many cliche movies have they been watching?” I asked.

Suddenly everyone’s eyes widened and they looked terrified. “Sigherra!” They shrieked as something razor sharp sliced through my skin.

My eyes widened as I looked down to see a blade covered in scarlet blood. “I have been defeated.” I said like a character out of a movie as I fell to the ground.

(Azura’s POV)

“Sigherra!” We all shrieked as a knife sliced through her skin. She looked down and her eyes widened slightly as she saw the blade covered in her own blood.

“I have been defeated.” She said, just like a character out of a cliche as she fell to the ground, unmoving.

“Talk about pathetic,” Polar said while smiling down at the knife in her hand, “Guess you're savior couldn’t save you all after all.” She said and beamed at all of us.

Suddenly she spun around as the echo of footsteps were heard. “Ein! I eliminated one of them just as requested!” Polar said, smiling like a perfectly ‘innocent’ child who had done as they were told.

“Well done Polar. As for the rest of you hybrids--- eliminate them!” Ein said and pointed at us.

Polar unlocked the cell and gripped the knife in her hand. I took this as an opportunity and ran through the opening in the cell door.

Violet, Crystal, Dabi, Blizzy, and Zoro ran right behind me as we ascended the stairs.

“I’ll stall Ein! You guys go!” Cameron shouted.

“So… many… stairs!” Crystal panted, “Must… have… pizza!” She exclaimed. Typical Crystal.

(Polar’s POV)

“You won’t get away this time!” I called out in a singsong voice as I started up the stairs, clutching the blade in my right hand.

I listened to the echo of their footsteps and started running up the stairs.

“Let’s play a game of cat and mice,” I called out happily, “I’ll be the cat and you’ll be the mice! One… two… three.. GO!” I said and started running up the stairs.

I heard a screech as one of them tripped and spotted Violet tumbling down the staircase. “This is TOO easy!” I exclaimed as I ran faster up the stairs. All of a sudden Violet disappeared.

She’s using her power. I thought. She’s actually trying to hide from me! Pathetic. “Violet, you should know by now that I can predict where you’re gonna turn up. You can only stay invisible for so long!” I sang.

When I got to the spot Violet had disappeared at, I saw dust.

It wasn’t Violet after all. It was a decoy.
