CHAPTER 4- Death at Midnight
Elfridge Drive 416.
A bit of a large blue house with a well- kept blooming garden of ornamental crops and a sparkling clean lawn and walkway.
It was a quaint little place.
Well, that's what Todd thought anyway, looking down from the rooftop of it.
He wasn't here for the scenery or to scout the house, though, especially at night.
He was here to eliminate someone living inside of it.
His companion looked at him, his grey eyes piercing through him.
"What?" Todd said through their mind link.
"Let's go, and only use the mind link," his companion replied ignoring the question.
They moved to the south side of the house away from prying eyes and landed on a balcony, soundlessly. Todd's nails silently extended into claws and silently cut a circular hole through the glass door. Removing the glass, his hand went through and unlocked the door. The glass reflected his young beautiful face.
They had quietly entered, only the sound of a sudden gust of wind could be heard. It blew through the other man's black hair, unsettling it. He pulled a long, black, silky strand into place.
Todd looked around. The room they were in looked like- a typical teenager's room- only it was clean.
The bed made, game consoles put away.
Todd shivered. This entire place was too clean. It disgusted him. At least, he'd get to smear it with crimson, soon enough.
They both advanced at inhuman speed, through the bedroom and separated, scouring the entire house, silently, for their target.
"Found it,''
Todd heard his companion through the mind link.
Todd reappeared next to him. "Where Pierce?''
"Here,'' the man said.
Todd turned. ''What the hell am I looking at?"
Pierce replied. ''An ancient Oriental vase. It's a rare collectors item. Can I keep it?"
Todd pinched the bridge of his nose. "Are you kidding me?"
''No,'' Pierce pouted. ''We have to make it look like a robbery afterwards, so I'm just looking for good stuff,"
Oh great, now he's trying to justify himself, Todd thought.
''We have a job to do. How about we get rid off the target first? Then you can look through this worthless humans 'valuable' stuff okay? And why the hell do I have to work with you anyways! You haven't even done your job yet!"
This guy was exhausting.
"The house is empty and I have found it. Their in the seemingly master Bedroom," Pierce replied through the mind link, ignoring the question again.
Todd felt like he'd been slapped. "Wait, if you found the target, then why did you show me a stupid pot?"
"Its a vase, not a pot and because I felt like it," the other male pouted giving the vase one last glance before moving. ''Follow me,''
In a second, they both stood outside a brown mahogany door.
"When I give the word," Pierce said telepathically.
Todd opened the door soundlessly and both men entered. He stopped short, looking around at the person sitting in the rocking chair, in a long skirt.
The round, wrinkled face which appeared to be sleeping was framed by pure silver - gray hair pulled back on a bun. The wrinkled hands rested lightly on the chair arms, in the dark room.
Todd knew he was here to kill this person but right now he wanted to shoot himself. It was no wonder he didn't know who his target was. If he had, he would have never gone on this mission. He was pitiful.
"What is this?" Todd growled through the mind link.
"Our target. What else?" Pierce replied.
"Oh," Todd said chuckling. "I'll tell you what else. It's an old, I repeat old bat! Look at him -"
"Her," Pierce interjected.
"Look at her she's practically dead already with all those wrinkles. I can see her bones dude! Why am I doing this again?!"
"Don't tell me you feel remorse for killing."
"No, I don't, but it hurts my dignity. She's already old- I mean she can be my great- grandmother and shape shifters live really long- so she won't be able to put up a good fight. In essence, old people are no fun at all and they're too easy to kill. I won't even get to listen to her screams, she'll die before I can finish," Todd ranted.
Pierce looked at him before replying. "We are all only on this hybrid mission because each of us wanted easy money. This is a very easy task. Stop complaining and make this quick, so your pride can recover. Have tolerance,"
"Fine, this doesn't mean I'll enjoy it, though."
They both advanced.
The woman opened her eyes.
"Young one?" She asked.
"No. Jane Freeman, I presume?" Pierce said out loud.
"What was that?" She said cupping a hand behind her ear. "A beenie man and prunes?"
Todd stifled a laugh.
"No, we're here to destroy you," Pierce threatened.
"Eh, what?" She said leaning forward. "You're going to have to speak up!"
"We're here to kill you," Pierce spoke louder.
"You wanna kiss me?" She said blushing. "Sorry boys but I'm already taken,"
Pierce glared at the struggling Todd. "Don't you dare laugh,"
Todd tried to nod, but lost the battle between himself and laughter and broke down.
"Wow, Pierce, I didn't know.... you liked o-older women," Todd gasped.
"Alright, let's kill her," Pierce growled.
"Wait, weren't you the same person that said to have tolerance?"
"I changed my mind."
Jane Freeman stared at her two assassins. Honestly, just because she was well past her three scores didn't mean she was to be taken lightly. Their three predecessors knew this all to well since they were already nine feet under.
The old lady ruse had worked like a charm.
Pierce advanced toward the old woman - now lightly fanning herself with an Oriental fan.
He held her at gunpoint. "Don't worry, I'll make this quick,"
"OK, do what you must, if you can stomach killing a defenseless, old woman who was hoping to kick the bucket soon anyways," she sighed snapping the fan shut.
"Don't worry, I'll enjoy it," he put his finger on the trigger.
The gun was never fired.
Pierce ducked as a blunt object came at him with lightning speed as the gun was wrenched out of his hands.
He sidestepped it as it went for his face.
He bent backwards as air whipped by his face.
Pierce stood up only to have something held at his throat.
It was a fan with his gun looped around it.
"Now, let me tell you something, young man," Jane said holding him at fan point "I might be old, but you need to learn respect for elders. Did you honestly think I would let you come into my house and destroy me? I'm one of the world's greatest feminist and my husband's a vampire. Ask my grandchild how his grandfather and I met. Here's the answer the first time I met him I kicked his ass! So I'm guessing you wanna die too? Why not!"
Pierce gulped.
Todd stopped laughing, breathing a bit heavy. "You know now would be a good time to give that signal?"
"Do I have to ask? I kind of have a weapon at my throat!" Pierce screamed through the mind link.
He knew now he had made the fatal mistake of underestimating this female. He blamed Todd for that. He was an idiot.
Anything could be used as a weapon- he had even fought someone who used plastic. A fan could be lethal too.
"Say bye - bye grandma!" Todd screamed as his arms changed into blades and he attacked.
Jane's eyes narrowed, following the movement.
She kicked Pierce and watched him slide across the room, just as the two blades attacked her head.
Using the fan, she deflected them and moved backwards.
She watched as Todd leaned forward, blade arms outstretched.
His posture was off. He still wasn't taking her seriously.
Oh well. A knee went into his stomach knocking the air out of him.
Then using her fan hand she knocked the his back sending her over his knee.
She smirked. She still had it.
Jane used the fan to block as a blade slid towards her throat.
Pierce growled as the old woman kept blocking his attacks.
"Young man," she said slapping away his hand. "Don't you know its impolite to sneak up on a lady?''
Pierce gasped as the fan slapped his hand making him drop the knife. This was stupid! She made him drop the knife! How was that even possible!
His grip was firm, he had years of experience and graveyards of people and monsters to prove it!
He shook his hand. It was numb and had a large red mark where the fan had hit. Damn this hag!
"Novice,'' Jane murmured stretching out and slicing with the fan where his neck was, at lighting speed.
The man barely had time to register as he staggered backwards.
Her hands lashed out at him.
He grabbed them.
Jane grinned. She could work with this. Her arms snaked around his till her hands gripped his shoulders.
With lightning speed her fingers embedded themselves into his shoulders and moved down towards the back of his hands.
Pierce felt his hands drop. He tried to move them but they wouldn't budge.
"Surprised?" Jane asked amused "Let's work on your posture,"
A windmill kick sent one of his legs from under him.
Without the use of his hands to help himself, Pierce's legs went apart splitting himself as he slowly slid towards the ground.
Pierce growled.
"Very good,"Jane commented "The first step to a better fighting stance, your friend over there could use some lessons too,"
She flipped back, dodging Todd who was now back up.
Todd raised Pierce up unto his feet. "What's your problem?"
"I can't move my arms," Pierce replied.
"How's that even possible?" he looked surprised at Jane,
"You were doing so well with your stance,'' the woman sighed.
Jane Freeman came from an ancient family of humans. They were and still are very powerful and influential. However, she was one of the last few of her lineage who still had knowledge of the original styles and structures, although, their descendants lived on. Their family practiced an ancient form of fighting which involved disrupting and controlling a person's energy flow. The central part was the heart. Attacking certain points on the body could disrupt, control or redirect that flow- incapacitating, numbing, paralyzing or even killing someone, which was what had happened to Pierce. It was effective on humans as well as monsters. Only her grandchild now knew the secrets of the family but only the basics of fighting. She had taught them a few other secret techniques but they'd have to train and develop the rest on their own.
She wasn't going to tell Dumbass 2 and Dummy 1 that, this wasn't why they had come to kill her. They had another intention. It was obvious, if they had no idea what she just did. Their boss sent them on a suicide mission.
Suddenly, knives started to appear as Pierce murmured something under his breath.
Jane's eyes narrowed at the weapons.
"I'm not called Pierce for nothing!" the man laughed "You'll be full of holes by the time I'm done with you,"
"What!" Jane gasped.
"Scared to die?"
"No," the woman replied " It's just that- I already have a hole,"
The atmosphere got quiet.
"You're a sick old witch! You know that! " Todd screamed at her, as Pierce fell speechless.
"Wanna see it?" Jane grinned.
" No, I don't you pedophilic sicko!" Todd retorted.
''Hm," she said opening the fan demonstrating.
She pointed it towards Todd.
Little holes appeared at the end of the fan's ribs.
Before he could blink, she swung it, sending needles and daggers hidden inside at Todd.
He barely had time to register as the weapons embedded themselves in him knocking him off his feet.
His arms raised to protect his normal face.
"Die!" Pierce screamed as the shower of knives plummeted towards the old woman.
Spinning in a circle, she used the now open fan to deflect some of them before doing a series of back flips out the door, avoiding the rest.
She sat on the banister crossing her legs and fanned herself lightly. "Is that all you've got boys?"
Todd swore as he sat up and touched his face. There was a cut on his smooth high cheek.
An angry inhuman growl escaped him as he started yanking the weapons out of him.
"Um, you shouldn't do that," Jane warned.
He was being careless, recklessly doing that could cause him to kill himself. Heck, he didn't know but that would make her life easier, but where's the fun in that? She wanted to finish him herself, not let her daggers and needles do it for her.
Her suspicions were confirmed as he stood up slowly and staggered, rich crimson pouring from the wounds. He really was Dumbass 2.
Todd looked at her murderously. No one touched his face when it was good. It was a rule. Breaking it meant: Death.
Jane watched as he pulled out most with a few left.
Pierce's hand twitched as it struggled to gain movement. It was coming back slowly.
Without warning, Todd lunged at her.
She sidestepped him and kicked, speeding up his fall over the banister. She watched briefly as he plummeted before turning to face Pierce.
Any ordinary human would have died or at least broken limbs falling from that height.
Pierce smirked as movement came back into his hand while he watched as a monster towered over Jane.
She felt it before she saw the shadow and dove to the side as a huge claw crashed through the landing- right where she was sitting. Jane gasped- her hip hurt. She had knocked it when she hit the floor.
A huge skeleton beast loomed over her, jaw closed shut in anger. The lifeless empty eye sockets seemed to stare at her as she listened the swish of it tail as it moved. She jumped unto the claw and ran up the arm as Pierce attacked her.
"Ow my hip," she gritted her teeth.
"Yeah, right. I'm not falling for the old lady act again," Pierce growled opening a switch blade.
He kicked, sending her flying downwards into the empty rib cage. She was moving slower.
Jane moaned as her hip knocked against the bone.
She stood up. It was back in place! But she was getting tired; damn old age!!
The two were locked in combat inside the rib cage : Fan vs. Switch Blade.
Pierce seemed to be gaining the upper hand as Jane was slowing down.
"I think your age is finally catching up with you," Pierce yelled as he choke slammed her to the bony spinal cord, his hand on her throat, the other holding the blade.
Jane glared at him as he held her out at arm's length. This wasn't exactly easy; she was old as and it didn't help at all that she was fighting inside a bone filled prison along with the fact that she also had to avoid Dumb ass 2 because he kept sticking his claws and tail in - trying to kill her.
The bony tips slight movement alone of the bone cage prison could kill her.
Jane lashed out with her foot, taking Pierce by surprise.
He let go and staggered backwards, then dropped to his knees, as the fan slashed across him leaving a diagonal oozing trail of blood across his upper body, dropping the blade.
She smirked. It didn't matter if he killed her, he had her mark now. She would be avenged. That, though, wouldn't stop her from kicking his ass.
She grabbed a rib and pulled, then cut across it with the fan. Jane was about to take it to impale Dummy 1, when the entire bone structure shook and disappeared.
(A/N Play song I added here)
Todd felt his transformation break as he shifted back, feeling the damage of those two fighting inside him and his broken rib which loosely jostled inside him as he plummeted.
Jane heard the blade clatter against the floor as she went into free fall.
Dumb ass 2's transformation had been impressive.
He was huge.
She reached out and grabbed him, slicing her fan across his back in the process.
Todd screamed. He had her mark now, too.
They hit the ground, with loud THUDs! except for Jane who landed untop of Todd.
She knew, neither was dead- not yet, but certainly damaged.
She walked over to Pierce who was lying face down on the floor. She raised her arm.
Pierce sensed her presence and grabbed the weapon which slit through his hand. As much as he wanted to, if he let go, he would be dead. She'd kill him.
Blood poured on one side of his head, his body was battered.
He stood slowly, grabbing her other arm, which was about to hit him.
There was a huge crimson patch from where he lay.
Those two were locked like that, until Jane coughed blood, a red patch slowly spreading across her chest.
Todd crawled over to the switch blade and grabbed it.
His back was on fire and coated in blood. The needles had embedded themselves deeper in his flesh, as a result of his fall. He coughed blood- from his internal injuries.
The hag was going to die.
He looked up at the two locked in a struggle.
Gripping the blade tighter, he saw his chance.
Blood poured down from her mouth. Jane looked down to see the tip of a blade sticking out of her chest. It had went through her.
Todd pushed harder and twisted the blade sadistically.
The fan clattered to the floor, as she slumped.
Todd yanked the knife out, panting heavily and watched as she dropped to the floor- smiling.
"Good show, ass holes," she murmured, smiling as the life slowly left her.
She watches as Todd dropped unconscious. Talk about..Or die trying. She had warned him about the blades. He might be joining her. Too much internal damage.
Pierce breathed heavily and watched as a pool of blood surrounded Jane's body as she died slowly.
There was no saving her now. He kicked away the fan. Wincing, he picked up Todd and disappeared. Someone would have to do clean up and finish the framework.
Jane's last sight was them leaving. She didn't care. They had her mark. She would be avenged. A spurt of blood escaped her hacking mouth as she mumbled "I'm sorry, Vincentia,"
With that, she could die peacefully, as the midnight bell sounded.
A/N 3152words!
Who's the old woman? Was this just a filler chapter? Does this have anything to do with the main story line? Or did I do it because I was bored? Find out... next week.
Hope you enjoy the chapter! Read, vote and comment!
