CHAPTER 14- Memories

The vast tundra stretched into the distance.

Sunlight reflected off the frozen crystals coating the ground, giving them an other worldly glow.

It should have been beautiful, this frozen gift of nature.

To Sergail, it was disgusting.

The entire environment was as cold as the temperature.
The entire snow coated area was depressing - a cold empty landscape devoid of any life, memories or events.

It simply stretched into nothing. A barren place impossible of holding anything but emptiness.
It was a mirror image of him though.

He looked down at his half- gloved hands.

Sergail had nothing.
He could feel nothing.
And he almost knew nothing.

Growing up and knowing almost nothing about his past, other than loneliness and segregation.

Sergail was the name he chose for himself. His birth was Davol.
He was a devil.
An abomination. A hybrid.

He shouldn't have been born.

His guardian ignored or scorned him, if he had to acknowledge his presence.
Sergail wanted to run away. What was the point of living in a place where he didn't exist, where he had to fend for himself anyways?

The Fates taught him a cold lesson that day by making his life even more cruel.

His guardian was killed by rouges. They took over his lodging and he ran.

If they caught him, they'd have slaughtered him as well.

He was nineteen now and that was seven years ago. He survived.

Ever since, he'd been on his own. At least with his guardian, he'd had shelter.

Why did the Moon Goddess hate him?

Stop being so pessimistic , his wolf tried to console him You're alive aren't you?

I'm grateful for living and breathing, that feeling of freedom, Sergail replied.
I just wish my existence, it wasn't so miserable.

Growls resounded behind him, as werewolves exited from the trees behind him.

Werewolves exited circling him.

Sergail jumped down unto the frozen tundra.

At least, it would no longer be boring and plain but stained with the crimson of blood. He wasn't going to loose.

The white canvas turned into an abstract art of twisted red splashes and chunks.

                     *                               *                                 *

Kyle pulled Jake up gently into a sitting position.

Jake was sweating and his breathing was heavy.

The older male sighed, whipping out the vial given to him by the Seer.

Ever since then, Jake had been unconscious the entire day.

The boy moaned and shifted in his sleep.

Kyle placed the vial to his lips and tilted his head back, draining the liquid down his throat.

He changed his brother's sweaty clothes and with a glance back, left, leaving him to rest.

Ray skipped down the hallway, destruction rampant and widespread.

Walls wet and covered in smoke particles, dirt, broken doors and the agonizing screams of teenagers filled the air.

Today was a good day.

Some men caused accidental havoc wherever they went, some men were wicked and some men just wanted to watch the world burn.

For one thing, she was a woman  not a man but she was all three.

A smirk plastered on her face while the air was poignant with the smell of rotten things.

She stepped to the side as someone suddenly tried to tackle her.

"What do you want, Billy?" She spat.

"What he hell do you mean by what I want?" The boy said in disbelief "Look around you, this place is a mess. Smoke bombs, stink bombs, tasers. Don't you think it's enough, Ray,"

Ray could feel her anger start to peak.
Tell him off. You've suffered enough, her wolf said And be quick about it.

"I'm starting my eighteenth birthday off with a bang," she growled.

This was her birthday, Halloween night, her revenge.

"Two years, Bill. Two bloody years, I've been tormented by your so called 'friends' and what did you do to stop them? Just stand there and watch. Then come up to me later and talk about 'image'. Blood is thicker than water and your pack comes before strangers. Apparently, you forgot that! Be happy I don't tell Alpha about this! All I did was set up a few pranks, at least I didn't shift on them or turn this into the ending of the 'Carrie' movie, Bill!"

"Look, I'm sorry, ok. I was wrong," Bill said guilt crossing his features.

She looked around at everything. "Ok, maybe I did overdo it a bit, too,"

"So we both took things too far," Ray sighed. She held up a gloved hand.

Billy breathed out with some relief. At least, she wasn't that pissed.

He shook her extended hand.

Ray laughed as his body jolted and he fell to the ground unconscious.

She started to laugh hysterically, turning off the shocker on her hand and pocketing it. "I......c-can't believe......you.....fell for that!" She giggled, wiping the tears off her face.

Ray hopped down the stairs about to make her exit.

The door suddenly and a guy stepped in "Did I miss any-" was all he could get out before Ray tackled him.

"Mate," she growled as the scent of chocolate hit her nose.

Go get him then her mate urged.

Thomas felt his back smack against the ground as something tackled him to the ground, straddling him.

He couldn't speak either, he was being kissed.

Everything was happening too fast.

Ray came up for air, leaving the panting male below her to watch as her eyes flickered from blue back to their regular grey colour.

"Mate," she giggled "Today has to be the best ever! Revenge, my birthday and my mate all in one day. Best day ever!"

She leaned down, burying her nose in the crook of his neck. He was human and delicious.

"Mate......no..... I can't be," Thomas sputtered.

"You're rejecting me?" Ray whimpered ,"How, why?"

Thomas breathed out and sat up, pushing her away. "Just slow down a bit," Thomas sighed "I'm just a bit surprised, okay?"

"So you're not rejecting me?"

"No, I guess."

Ray grinned. "Good enough for me," she hugged him "So you understand about mates. How do you know beautiful and what's your name?"

"My name is Thomas and my mom is a werewolf but my dad is human and so am I. Do you mind letting go, I can't breathe," he gasped.

"Yes because I love you."

"I know it's the mating bond thing but we just met, I barely know you!"

"Oh, so you just need to know better," Ray smirked mischeviously.

Thomas gasped as he was effortlessly thrown over shoulder.

"Hey let go!"

"Nope. I'm never letting go. Wherever you go, I'll find you," Ray said contentedly, walking off into the night with her prize. She was happy.

Thomas sighed as  he realized he was stuck with her. He couldn't beat a werewolf in a fight.

They were probably going to the pack house and no one was going to help, despite the fact that he was being helplessly kidnapped.

                      *                             *                                *

Jake sat up on the transparent floor.

Images flashed through his head of faces and people he had never seen before, yet they felt familiar.

The purple atmosphere glistened, shifting to blue as footsteps approached.

"What's going on?" Jake asked his wolf. "My head feels like it just went through a video montage that's on a loop,"

"You don't get it, do you?" His wolf said.

"No of course I do," Jake replied sarcastically. "That's exactly why I'm asking, what the heck is happening,"

"Well the sarcasm's still there."

"You'd miss it, if it wasn't."

His wolf sighed. "Think of it as a memory montage,"

"Whose?"

The environment changed into a grassy plane on the edge of a cliff, the blades of light green grass slowly tilting as a gentle breeze pushed them to a side. However, the atmosphere remained blue.

"That was cool, though."

"Whose memories do you think they are?"

"Julia Roberts?" Jake  shrugged.

" Of course not, it's Set It Off."

"Really?" Jake said hopefully.

"No, it's not!" His wolf exclaimed "They're mine .....yours......ours! They're who I was in my past lives,"

Jake's jaw dropped. "You....were a....girl, how?"

"Really that's your first question. No, 'why am I showing you this? Who they were or anything?' That kinda sounds sexist and what do you mean by how?"

"I thought wolves had one gender."

"Technically, a wolf doesn't have a gender, it adapts to whatever gender your host is. It is usual for you to get a host or hosts of one gender , though."

"Yeah, so how the heck did you get stuck with Ray?" Jake asked.

"After being reborn twice, I asked for a change of pace and the Moon Goddess totally punked me," his wolf puffed.

"Pff," Jake started laughing.

His wolf frowned as the boy hit the grass, holding his sides. "Okay, you're overdoing it now,"

"Almost done," Jake gasped.

"Done yet?" His wolf asked a while later.

"Yes."

"Okay then," he clapped once.

Jake cocked his head to the side as two spheres of light appeared and formed vision windows.

Images of Sergail and Ray flashed in the individual windows.

"Did you learn anything?" His wolf asked.

"No. What am I  supposed to learn! All I basically saw are specific scenes in their lives and the rest rushes through in a montage. I don't get it."

His wolf sighed "I really thought you understood. You're clueless, JK,"

"Oi, not completely."

"You were warmish in your assumption about the specific scenes, but why would I show you? That's what you have to answer."

Jake shrugged. "I don't know. That's why I'm asking!"

"Well, too bad. I'm not stopping until you get it."

"Hey, newsflash Wolfie. Not sorry to disappoint but I'm not going back to emotional, illusion -filled, drunken dreamland."

The wolf growled, his electric eyes glowing.
A smirk written on his face as he cupped Jake's face in his hands.

Jake's body froze as he tried to back away.

He couldn't escape, so he did the next best thing, he shut his eyes.

No connection or eye connection equals no helpless state controlled by his wolf or vampire.

"Jake, look at me."

It wasn't a request but a firm command which he wasn't going to listen to.

Suddenly, the air was filled with noisy cracking sounds, then plunged into a dead silence.

Then his wolf started laughing

Jake was startled. His wolf was the calm, responsible, serious type. He'd never heard him laugh before.

What the hell was so funny?

His eyes opened and he instantly regretted it.

The entire grassy cliff had now been transformed into nothing.  It was just a black, empty void now. The only thing he could see clearly was his wolf. Everything stretched into endless nothingness.

"What the hell!"

Something suddenly jerked him down as the wolf released him. He grabbed his wolf .

Jake glared angrily at his wolf.  "You bitch!"

"I'm a male in this life, not a female and I'm not a dog."

"You're a canine, so you're related," Jake retorted, trying to loosen the grip of whatever was pulling him down.

"You do realize you're insulting yourself. I am you."

Jake didn't reply.

"Axel would be proud of you right now. I can only tell you two things: one, you should obey when I tell you to do something,"  he grabbed Jake's hands.

"Yeah and become all passive and easy to manipulate, no thank you."

"And never call me Wolfie again," he pried the boy off him and let go "Bye Jay! You're going under again,"

The wolf watched as Jake plummeted into the dark void, before disappearing.

                         *                                  *                                 *

The quadruped felt his body hit the carpeted forest floor as his legs gave way from under him.

Alex snapped his jaw shut, yelping as pain coursed through him.

His left shoulder was bleeding profusely and his left leg was  badly injured as well, enough that he had a slight limp.

Nausea and dizziness soon came on.

We're in really bad shape, his wolf said.

Geez, I didn't notice at all, Alex replied sarcastically licking the two different bites and claw marks on one of his sides. Was it the fact that I have my very own mini blood puddle or all the pain that gave it away?

His wolf ignored him Are you going to stay down?

Alex's eyes moved over the blood puddles, injured and dead wolves littering the forest floor, as the battle waged on with the able bodied survivors. Growls and snarls, whines carried on the wind.

Nah, I'm not going down until I get the bastard I really want to kill, Alex replied, shaking his head to clear it.

A growl emanated, as a large blonde wolf stalked towards him- the prey.

I hit the jack pot today, Alex said Maybe I'll find my mate tomorrow too?

Don't count on it, his wolf said.

Alex stood up on here legs and shook himself, eyes locked on target.

The other wolf- much bigger than himself- pounced.

Time it, his wolf said.

I know! Alex grunted as the force of a clawed paw dug into his shoulder, as he shifted his body, to meet the blow.

His head shot up into the air, locking on the bastard's throat.

Alex bit down- hard.

The other wolf struggled to get away, clawing at Alex's back and sides.

He shook his head as the metallic taste of blood filled his mouth and locked his jaws harder.

Soon, the heart stopped beating and the body went limp.

Alex flung his head to the side along with the dead body.

Darkness filled his vision and he collapsed.
Mission accomplished.

                              *                         *                      *

Jake sat up, panting. He was back on the grassy cliff. He could still feel the ebbs of pain.

He sat up gasping and looked around wildly.

His eyes laid on to his wolf cross- legged a couple feet in front of him.

"Do not send me back. For the love of everything covered in fur, don't!"

"I have nothing to send you back to," his wolf replied "What did you learn?"

"I'm still not following."

His other half frowned. "Come on Jake, think!"

The boy shrugged.

"This isn't school! Do you expect me to spell it out for you!"

Jake nodded.

The wolf groaned and took a deep breath. "As you said I showed you specific scenes of different events. What kind of events were they?"

He thought for a moment. "Sergail was depressing, the guy was totally like the late 1600s original emo version. Alex was fiery and full of pain. Ray was evil,"

"She was not evil. Mischievous yes, but not evil."

"She put someone in the ER for flirting with her mate. They were near death. That definitely sounds evil to me."

"I actually found that cute."

Jake looked at him mortified. "You're more sadistic than Axel,"

"You're just realizing this now?"

Jake didn't reply.

"Huh, first time, I'm hearing you speechless."

"It'll be your last. Now time for my turn in the 20 questions game. Why did you show me all of that?"

"Jake I'm supposed to be your wolf, it's in my job description.  Did you not listen to your brother when he spoke?"

"So you used the convenience of Kyle lecturing me to unleash your plan? You're beating Axel back on the psychological meter for being manipulative too."

"I didn't use the convenience of it. I had this planned for years, Jake, your brother was just a coincidence."

"Oh really. If it was for years , why didn't you do this sooner?" Jake shot back.

"Because you keep closing me off! You've completely eradicated any possibility of uniting with me at all."

"But you've been in control of our body plenty of times. What more do you want from me! I don't even have any say in it when you do!"

"That's not the point Jake! Let me tell you how I  'take control'," his wolf growled "Imagine what's it like to be trapped in a glass box with no doors, only able to look on and do nothing, until those little flickers of uncertainty and unconsciousness creep up from the darkest corners of your mind, slowly permeating and drafting forwards, weakening the barrier and allowing the only window of escape I have,"

"Fine. I get its hard for you but what the hell do you want me to do!"

" I want you to pick Jake. Do you want me as your wolf? I am tired of you constantly resisting me. I can't be the only one putting in effort. Fourteen years wear you out after a while."

"What?"

"Here and now you decide, do you want me or not?"

Jake thought for a moment. It was strenuous dealing with his wolf but he didn't want to get rid of him completely. He was half -werewolf. The loss would too much. He couldn't just tear away a part of himself.

He just wanted him to do nothing at all.

The ground shook slightly as gentle vibrations rumbled through it.

"I don't want to get rid of you," Jake said slowly.

"Quit lying! You're shortening our time even more," his wolf said as the quakes increased in intensity, now able to be felt "Tell the truth,"

"I was!" Jake screamed, as the ground started cracking "What more do you want?!"

"It's amazing that even with your consciousness falling apart, you can still lie to yourself," his wolf chuckled.

"I'M NOT LYING!"

"Alright Mr.Defensive , if you want to survive, start being honest with yourself. Why do you constantly resist me?"

Jake was silent, the atmosphere darkened, the grass grayed then turned black  as it dried up and withered, the earthquakes increased in intensity as the cracked earth opened up even more into dark deep, seemingly bottomless chasms.

Why would he resist his wolf- a part of himself?

The strong animalistic part of him that was completely unpredictable.
That statement alone should explain it.

The thought alone of his wolf taking control terrified him.
It made him afraid.

The fact still remains that his wolf was an animal.
He was afraid of relinquishing control- completely.
With Axel, he could at least stop him from doing something drastic. He still felt like he could have some control of himself.

With his wolf, he'd have to completely submit to him- free to do whatever he wished. He'd have to completely rely on him. Something the young hybrid wasn't use to doing.

He couldn't control events in the slightest , he couldn't predict them either.
The unforseen, something wild- anything could happen and something was always left destroyed. It made him feel helpless.

Being there subconsciously gave him a slight slither of power and control, the only normalcy he could enjoy, to be able to influence his own actions to an extent.

He wanted to hold unto that and as a result, he had blocked his wolf off mostly. That deep fear had turned into a blockage.

And now, his fear and selfishness would destroy this part of his consciousness forever.

"Is that how you really feel?"

Jake looked up. Shit! Did he just say that all out loud?

"Yes, but doesn't matter. I can hear your thoughts."

Oh.

"Jake the relationship between a wolf and it's host is based on trust."

"Yeah and you've given me plenty of reasons to trust you as far as I can kick you."

"I've barely even had a chance!" His wolf protested.

"Note the word 'barely' in that sentence. It indicates that you did have chances and guess what? You left a trail of destruction in your wake!" Jake responded.

"Touché," the wolf said as the world crumbled even more.

"Give me ninety- five good reasons-" Jake started before the ground crumbled beneath his feet and he plummeted.

Well, half of me's done for, Jake thought, waiting for the cold darkness to caress and hold him, as his eyes closed.

Suddenly, he was jerked upright.

He opened his eyes and looked up.

His wolf had a grip on his arm.

"Let me go! Please," Jake whispered hiding his head in his arm.

He felt the cold drops on it. What the hell!

"You've had tears streaming down your face the whole time JK," his wolf chuckled.

"Shut up and leave me alone! " Jake said pulling back.

The wolf sighed as the world slowly started disintegrating, from its gray edges inward.

"Jake, this is pointless and you know it. Just let go and accept it. I need you to trust me and give me a chance- give us a chance. I promise I won't do anything you don't like. Trust me and take a leap of faith........please. You need to let me pull you up. If I screw up, you'll never see my existence again."

Jake took a deep breath. He wasn't used to trusting people. Maybe it was time to start.

He looked up at him. "Fine, help me. I'll be the crackers and you can be the chocolate,"

"So we're making s' mores. Does that mean Axel's the marshmallow and that you've accepted me?" His wolf asked.

"I guess," Jake looked up at him.

"I'll take that as a yes to both," his wolf chuckled as a blue aura surrounded him.

Jake watched him smile, pulling him up, as his features changed.

From a serious Sergail, to a smirking Alex, to a smiling Ray.

"Holey cheese," Jake muttered as the entire gray scene froze, then reversed itself. The gray atmosphere returned to its blue hue. The ground quickly resealed itself, almost immediately resorting grass more bountiful, lusher and greener than before.
However, despite this scene, that was not the reason for this outburst.

The minute his feet touched the ground- his wolf disappeared- well his human form.

Before him, was a large black wolf with a tuff of heavy brown hair on its chest. The same electric blue eyes looked back at him.

Picture of wolf

"You should see the look on your face right now," it laughed.

This was the first time he saw his wolf form. He always heard when he shifted but never saw it. And now his wolf was talking- in his wolf form and his jaw was closed.

"That's what we look like! And how the hell are you talking in that form!"

"I'm just glad you've accepted me."

"Hey don't ignore the question!"

"Those visions showed survival and sadness; happiness and fulfillment; willpower, determination and pain. Some of the strongest motivational elements for an individual. As a hybrid, you will experience them a lot. As your wolf I'm supposed to show you these experiences, guide you, help you grow. I can finally do so now you've stopped resisting me."

"You keep bringing that up! I really screwed up didn't I?"

"Yes, yes you did."

"What no consolation or 'Don't blame yourself Jake,'? You are really blunt."

"You're just realizing this now?"

Jake dropped. This had been emotionally exhausting. He was tired.

Instead of falling on his back, arms caught him.
He looked up at his blue eyed replica.

"Hey let's start over," Jake said yawning.

"I was expecting you to pass out, but ok."

"Hi, I'm Jake I like walking, flying, annoying my siblings- oh forget this. Let's cut to the chase. I'm too tired for this shit. I don't have a sense of humour," Jake said feeling his eyes drooping.

His wolf chuckled. "Nice to meet you I guess. My name is Luca,"

What're do you mean by 'I guess'? You should be honoured, Jake thought.

"Drop the sass and rest," Luca said "Just this once,"

Jake obeyed as his eyes closed, letting the darkness consume him. This time though, it was warm.

A/N bam! Chapter 13!  3909 words! With the introduction of a new character/ establishment of an partly established character! Let's hear it for Luca!
I planned this for a long time. Did no one find it suspicious that I only called him 'wolf' and stuff?
