fire
You breathe fire and it's beautiful
Red, orange, yellow, blue
Bright light in the darkness
That lives all around you
Every word burns to ashes in air
And sends embers out like tiny stars
They pepper your skin
And decorate you with tiny scars
You give life to your sentences
And then you burn it away
Like that gift
Didn't mean anything anyway
I want so badly to get close
To see you up close with my own eyes
But my heart bears
A warning sign
FLAMMABLE, it says
I sit in the back corner
And watch you grow bolder and bolder
And bolder
I close my eyes and wonder
What it could be like
To dance with a flame like you
With my ribbon soul alight
Your laugh is a whirlwind of sparks
You relish in the tiny burns
You spin like a music box ballerina
I wonder if I could take a turn
I step out of my corner
I forget my warning sign
And I gather courage
From the recesses of my mind
"Hey," I say,
And you turn with a smile
"Hey," you say,
And you've set me on fire
I'm alight with sparks of my own
And I love the burn and the light and the danger
You welcome me close
A candlemaker
That is what I am now
A candle of your making
Not quite enough wax and far too much wick
Dazzling in a dress of ribbons and flames
I am burning to ashes
I feel my warning melt away
My flammable heart a wreck in my chest
But I dance with you anyway
Such a flammable heart
I've been given
But life is more beautiful
In flames than in ribbon.
