The rescue team didn't find Ruben anywhere. Devon felt like they were looking at him suspiciously, even though they spoke nicely to him. He wondered if they thought he had done something to Ruben. If they did, how stupid they were to think that, he thought.

While one team continued looking for Ruben, another team put Devon in a police car to take him home.

"Where were you going?" one of the officers asked.

"We were going back home. I was in the camp," Devon replied.

"What camp?" she asked.

"The Wilderness Therapy Program," Devon said.

"Why were you sent there?" the woman asked. Devon hesitated, wondering if he was supposed to tell the truth or not.

"They sent me there, saying I hit my sister," Devon said.

"Did you hit her?" she asked.

"No," Devon replied. The woman said nothing. She didn't look like she believed him.

"So, the program is over?" the woman asked.

"No," Devon said.

"Then why are you going back home?" she asked.

"I don't know. He came to take me back home," Devon said.

"Did he tell you the reason?" she asked.

"No," Devon replied.

"So, who's in your house?" she asked again.

"Tommy and Clara. They are Ruben's children," Devon said.

"Ruben? Why do you call your dad by his name?" she asked.

"He's not my real dad. I'm adopted," Devon said.

"What about the other two?" she asked.

"They are his real kids," Devon replied.

"What about his wife?" she asked.

"She's in jail for child abuse," Devon said. The woman looked at Devon seriously but said nothing.

"So, there are no adults in the house?" she asked.

"He has a girlfriend. They were hoping to get married soon, but I was in the camp, so I don't know if they got married or not. And there's a maid in the house," Devon said.
