In the 8th Millennium Anno Domini, humans captured the energy of the sun in a miniscule battery, capable of powering huge spaceships that were now capable of travelling many light-years. The brave few who dared to use this technology soon left the more cautious humans behind, stuck in the Solar System. Having lost the power of the life-giving sun, those humans soon died out and the time of the humans in the Solar System came to an end.

The brave humans who'd dared to venture out, however, spread out among the stars, multiplying at a hitherto unforeseen pace. The burgeoning human populace required resources, land and capable administrators. Necessity fostered creativity, ingenuity, and the humans replicated the Dyson Sphere technology they'd used to capture the power of the original Sun. These replicas then captured the power of every star they came across, until the humans covered the entire Milky Way galaxy.

40 billion planets, with 5 million humans living on each one. For a thousand years, they spread over these planets, bending the atmospheres of those planets to their will, asserting their dominance over every planet. In the process, billions of priceless alien artifacts were destroyed, but the humans simply used the knowledge of their alien predecessors to rise to increasingly greater heights. It seemed as though this Golden Era would never come to an end. Alas, the way it came to an end was shockingly obvious to anyone who looks at the events that led to it now. However, this wasn't evident to the people of that time. They were unfortunately short-sighted, and soon, the entire Human Empire collapsed- because of communication issues.

With a diameter of 105,700 light years to cover, messages became increasingly slow, leading to transport issues, food issues and poor planning. This state of affairs lasted 3 centuries, until the planets fell into chaos. In the year 8,379 AD, the final DysoBattery was used up, and with it was gone the ability of the humans to traverse the galaxy at will. Forced to return to the rudimentary spaceships used by their ancestors more than a thousand years ago, the space voyagers focused on improving the speed and endurance of these spaceships, until they achieved a speed of 1.08*10^7 kph (or one parsec in one year) for their best spaceships. These best spaceships were then given to the mercenaries of the day, known by the government as "paid enforcers" and by the public as the Killers. They commanded the immense respect of every planetary government, recognizing no law save that of the jungle- in other words, kill or be killed...
