CHAPTER 1 - THE LOWER SECTION
Allen dressed up quickly and headed towards the elevator shaft. Their home was indeed built above ground, designed in such a way that the mountain walls formed part of the house's interior but it was also stressful leaving the house because there were lots of procedures that had to be taken into consideration.
From as early as Allen could remember, he always used the elevator shaft to get to the lower floor bed but he heard that before he was born getting down was always a hassle for his parents though it didn't change their minds. Allen glanced out the glass view of the shaft he was in; he could see the city up close as he descended. The city was always more beautiful when there wasn't a storm or winter, now he could see the city in all its glory.
Whoever thought of building a world here was very brilliant, not only was Varken a city above ground but below it as well, Varken had several huge buildings of different shapes and sizes protruding from the mountains but that was not all, Varken was a city built within mountains both figuratively and literally. The mountains were excavated and redesigned to the extent that almost every single mountain, every crevice, every cliff was occupied by individuals and this still wasn't the whole of Varken.
The elevator continued to lower till Allen was no longer looking at the snowy mountains but at several layers of soils and rocks and soon that also vanished and he was looking at another city. This was the Lower level of Varken, also known as the city for the lower class citizens, in this section, the city was basically a black market in a way, illegal business was carried out in the suburbs, all manners of theft were done in the lower section, here everyone had to do what they could to survive even if it meant sacrificing their values.
The elevator shaft finally stopped with a strong jerk, the door opened and Allen was met by a huge crowd, people all going about their activities, yelling, shouting and murmuring. Allen knew how dangerous the place could be, especially for someone of his reputation, especially for someone of noble blood and a well-known founder of the city. ''Get your own very BIOGEN at a free discount, only available at Mr Terry's'' a plump looking man yelled waving his hands in the air.
Allen knew Mr Terry well, the man was always known for his reputation as one of the best modern technology salesmen in Varken, no one really knew how he acquired new equipment every week, there were rumours that he ventured to the Builder territory and stole their designs but Allen knew that if there was one thing he was sure of was that Mr Terry was no war hero, in fact he was always insecure about his safety ironic since he lived in the most dangerous place in Varken.
Mr Terry was a man of profit, he had always benefitted from business and it was all that he knew and though he wasn't particularly regarded as a man of noble path he was quite trustworthy, well at least to those he found favour with and that included Allen Treasure as well. He caught a glimpse of the yellow hair and immediately called out ''Young Allen it's good to see you again'' he beckoned the young boy to come.
''It's been a while since you came down here'' Mr Terry bellowed as he slapped Allen on his back, Allen winced a little as Mr Terry said with a smile. ''You are not abandoning us for the high and mighty folks up there are you?'' Allen shook his head smiling and replied ''Of course not'' Allen actually preferred it down in the lower section of Varken despite its lack of beauty, it had far better people in it mixed with the bad but genuinely good people lived here and plus it was way more fun in the underground city.
''Dad has started training me harder than before so it takes most of my time but I'd never forget here, it's my second home'' Allen said as he glanced at the bionic arm part that was lying on a table, Mr Terry noticed the curiosity and said ''See, it's the new BIOGEN, the latest of its kind, virtually indestructible, said to contain a new element that hasn't even been discovered yet, imagine how much I would get?'' Allen stared at the machine in wonder, it was shaped like an arm, a metal arm, it had all sorts of buttons integrated in it. Allen brushed his fingers on the BIOGEN and it sang a low tune, it truly was a marvellous creation.
BIOGEN was the term given to the technology made in Varken. Of course most of them especially the more complicated and by default expensive originated from Builders. BIOGEN varied in many ways and uses, some were developed for the disabled, others were built for military or rebels of Varken. The government of Varken relied heavily on BIOGEN for almost all their activities, there were different levels of BIOGEN but the one that was heavily bought by the government was what people like to call: 4TH GENERATION BIOGEN. These were mainly made up weapons and huge aircrafts used for aerial combat in case Varken was to face a threat from the sky from other cities or from the predators.
Allen noticed the new crates behind Mr Terry ''You've been busy'' Mr Terry folded his arms ''When I'm ready I think I'll finally let you see what I'm working on kid'' Allen had always visited Mr Terry whenever he came off that elevator and every time Mr Terry would say that same statement; Terry knew his dad, they were old friends but they never spoke much, at least not in front of Allen and Terry disliked the city above and its occupants so there wasn't really a chance for Paul and Terry to talk.
''Have you seen Damien around?'' Allen asked, Mr Terry grinned and said ''your good looking friend is at The Shack, seems to have a sweet tooth for that violent place'' Allen groaned. Damien was always at that side of the city, he could be so annoying with his curly black hair that seemed to catch the attention of females and Allen was always the invisible friend who they never noticed in the presence of his best friend, even Fiona rarely glanced at Allen whenever Damien was there.
The Shack was a place where people went to watch fights in cages, sometimes by people, sometimes by predators, sometimes by machines but that place was a place always filled with all sorts of criminals, there was without a doubt a level of danger at The Shack.
