Chapter 4 - Interview
Tonight was the interview, where the Capitol "gets to know" all the people they're betting on. I say "gets to know" because a lot of Tributes over-exaggerate one of their qualities, like being brave or confident. This interview in front of the Capitol and Panem will make or break my chances of going through with my plans for these games.
I smooth down the front of my dress with shaking hands. I try not to look nervous, but my hands betray me. My stylist, Nathaniel, catches my wrist and gives me a look that says "Calm down, you look terrified". Nathaniel has black hair and brown eyes. He doesn't talk much, but he's nice to me.
I give him a weak smile, and take a deep breath to calm my nerves. My dress is a dark green colour that matches my eyes and sets off my black hair and brown skin. It's made of something soft, either silk or satin, I can't quite tell.
They call for the interview to begin. We line up backstage in the order of our Districts, from 1 to 12.
Caesar Flickerman gives his trademark introduction, telling some jokes to warm up the audience. Each year he chooses a different colour theme, and his hair, suit and makeup are done in that specific colour. This year, it's red. Under all these lights, he looks like he's bleeding. Caesar turns to gesture for us to come onstage, and we line up in a row, waiting for him to call our names.
Blight is first. She's wearing a pale blue dress that sets off her blue eyes. The skirt of the dress flares out slightly, and reaches down to her knees. Her red hair is done up in a simple knot because of how short it is. She smiles brightly throughout the entire interview, but it's pretty obvious that she's faking it. During our training days, I noticed that Blight doesn't really care about anybody. I can see that the warmth of her smile doesn't quite reach her eyes, but the Capitol is eating it up.
Melody's turn. Her dress is black, and it has a metallic sheen to it. It's very pretty. Her black hair is pulled into a ponytail. I guess her designer was going for "simple, yet elegant". Melody's pretty much acting like the same person onstage as she was behind the scenes, so nothing new here.
My turn.
I step up to the stage, and shake Caesar's hand. He asks me how I feel about the Games. I tell him that I'm trying to make my family at home proud, and I somehow manage to keep my smile and hold in a sob as the Capitol claps and cheers. The rest of my time up there passes in a blur, and then it's Piper's turn.
Piper is wearing a white lace dress that hangs off one shoulder. Honestly, she looks like she's going to a wedding, but Caesar seems to like it. Piper is acting the same as she always is: arrogant. She is tempering it somewhat, but sometimes when she ends a sentence, I can practically hear what she was planning to say. Piper knows as well as I do that arrogance won't save you, and no sponsor wants someone who won't be thankful for whatever they can scrape together for her as a gift.
Next is a girl named Melanie, from District 3. She has chestnut brown hair and pale green eyes. She looks fairly nervous, but she relaxes after a few minutes and the warmth in her voice becomes more natural.
Melanie's sister Janessa follows. She has the same brown hair, except her eyes are brown instead of green. Her dress is blue at the neckline, but it fades to purple as soon as it passes her waist. She cracks jokes about as often as Caesar, and the entire audience is in hysterics after only one minute.
Daniel, in his red suit, is next. The first thing Caesar said to him, was asking if he had dressed up as a pirate because District 4's industry is fishing. Daniel took it pretty well, laughing it off along with the crowd. He said that he lost his eye and hand in a machine accident a few years back, and he's not certain if the Gamemakers will let him keep his hooked hand.
A few questions later, and Sarah comes up.
Sarah's long blonde hair is twisted high up on her head, showing the eye that she always hides, which is black instead of hazel. Her dress is a very pale pink, accented with a touch of silver. Innocence and gentleness are practically oozing out of her in waves, and the Capitol kept going "aww". Sarah was so nervous about being in front of so many people that she barely spoke a word, and whenever she did speak, it was something she'd whispered to Caesar, who would then tell the audience what she'd said.
Violet, of District 5, is next. She has black hair and black eyes, and it makes her look almost ghostly when combined with her pale skin. Her dress is purple, lending her a different colour than black. I have to say, Violet's pretty energetic.
Next up is Serena. Her eyes are grey, and her hair is a such a dark blonde that it almost looks brown. Her red dress has a layer of golden glitter over it that shimmers every time she moves. Serena sounds fairly confident in her abilities, which could prove challenging for me to deal with later.
District 6 is the only one that has two male tributes. The first of the pair is Freddy, who has dark brown hair and pale blue eyes. His suit is brown as well. Even from where I'm standing, I can see how muscular he is. Caesar comments on it, and Freddy says that it's because he's spent most of his life hauling railway ties, which are apparently really heavy.
Freddy's brother is named Jason, and they look so different from each other that I didn't believe they were related at first. Jason has blonde hair and black eyes, and his suit is a dark shade of blue. He's about the same as Janessa in terms of personality, and I can tell he loves his brother a lot.
The first tribute from 7, a girl named Hayley, is called up. She has brown eyes, and her black hair is almost as long as Sarah's, even though it's been braided. She's wearing a simple pale blue dress with a black ribbon tied around her waist. Hayley is fairly quiet as well, giving just a "yes" or "no" answer.
Her partner is a different story.
The girl, Rose, has short red hair and hazel eyes. Her dress is gold and strapless. She seems overly calm about the fact that she's probably going to die in the Arena, so she seems like someone to watch out for.
Next is Desiree, one of the girls from 8. Her blonde hair and blue eyes are so pale, she looks almost washed out under the lights. Her floaty yellow dress makes her look like she's wrapped in sunlight. She mentions that her strength is in recognizing poisonous plants, so she'll last for a long time if she isn't taken out quickly. Desiree seems like the type to hide and wait for everyone else to kill each other.
Jazmin, the other tribute from 8, also has a fairly passive skill: camouflage. Her light brown hair and dark brown eyes would be fairly difficult to spot in a forest setting. Tonight however, her brightly coloured dress (which is literally COVERED in glitter) is almost impossible to miss.
9 is up next. First is Cassie, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Her dress is bubblegum pink, and it seems to match her joyful personality.
Cindy, her partner, is a study in apathy.
She has dark red hair and brown eyes. Her dress is white, and she looks absolutely miserable. Sure, she's smiling at Caesar, but her mascara is smudged and her eyes are bloodshot, so she's clearly been crying. The audience can't tell because of the lights, and when she turned to come back to the line, I could see how upset she was.
Aria came after her. Her coppery dress looked really pretty with her hair colour, and set her apart from the other redheaded girls. And, rather than faking an aspect of her personality, she simply acted like herself.
I admire that about her. How openly honest she can be about her life. I hope that I'll be able to do that too, soon enough.
Aria's District partner, Bree, seemed pretty calm during her "chat". She had dark blonde hair and blue eyes, and her fuchsia dress is fairly simple. I suspect her stylist was trying to create something that could easily be remembered and reused in years to come, even after the original Tribute had died.
District 11 comes after what feels like hours.
Bella, a girl with black hair and green eyes, is up first, and I kid you not, she skipped up to the center. Thankfully, she wasn't wearing heels, or she probably would've broken an ankle. Bella has "twelve-year-old" written all over her, especially with her cupcake-style dress.
Ben, her brother, was probably about seventeen, on the older end of the age spectrum. He had the same black hair, but his eyes were brown. He wore a simple black suit, and he didn't do anything special. But he mentioned that he'll protect his sister until the very end.
'Note to self: get both of them in the same day.'
Finally, we arrive at 12. The two of them made quite the impression during the Opening Ceremony.
Jack heads up to the center of the stage. He has black hair and black eyes, but his stylist gave him a navy blue suit to break up the monotony.
His sister's name is Brooklyn. Her black hair matches her brother's, but her eyes are brown. She was put in a strapless navy dress to match Jack's suit.
The two of them are so thin, I feel like by next week, I'd be able to count their ribs. If I find them in the Arena, I'm taking them out as quickly and painlessly as possible. I don't want them to suffer; they've suffered enough already.
By the time Caesar wraps it all up, there's a ringing in my ears. I can't stop thinking about tomorrow.
What if everything goes wrong?
What if I get killed on the first day?
I take a deep breath.
I can do this.
I have to do this.
