~~~HUSSAIN's POV~~~
I stretched my arms as the late afternoon sun slapped against my face. Staying in the bus and sitting almost still for more than two hours isn't fun. They spent so long while looking for Madiha and I that there was no time left for a break.
All the students ran past me, giving me hi-fives as the got off the bus and collected their luggage. After the principal's long thank you speech to all the parent helpers, we were finally allowed to leave.
I walked over to my car that Faisal had sent and the driver opened the back seat. He first handed me my blazer and I wore it over my white t-shirt.
"Aap kaheen jaa rahe hein?" Madiha asked behind me and I turned to her. "Hum. Hum jaa rahe hein. I have to check up on my house's progress."
She shook her head and stepped away, "then you should go, I'll go home.... It's already quite late."
"Offo. It's only going to take us 15 minutes, I promise," I insisted, "and Faisal will be there too."
She gave it a quick thought before agreeing. I held the back door for her and she sat inside. Giving her a smile, I went to the other side but, didn't miss out on how she rolled her eyes at me. Honestly, she looks cute when she is tries to look annoyed.
I sat behind the driver's seat and once our luggage was loaded, we drove off.
~~~MADIHA's POV~~~
My hands felt sweaty. No actually, they felt numb. I could feel them getting colder as we neared the housing complex. I have been here before. I have lived here before. I grew up here.
It's not a place where extremely rich people would live but, you had to have a pretty heavy bank balance to be able to afford it; something that we were able to do once.
As the car stopped, Hussain hopped out and I nervously reached for the door's handle. So many memories flashed in front of my eyes and it took everything in me to hold myself together.
Each and every house looked pretty much the same here but, three of them had a completely different story. Faisal Bhai's, abba's and-
"Madiha!" I heard Hussain's voice and I instantly turned to him.
He stood by an old man. He had a short grey beard just around his chin area and a partially bald scalp. I had seen him in the newspaper once and I guess he was the person managing the renovation here.
I silently followed Hussain towards the house that stayed empty almost all my childhood. A few years ago, I remember a man stayed there for a couple of weeks but, he seemed quite scary for a fifteen year old me.
I was greeted by the smell of fresh paint and glue like they had just fitted in the new marble flooring. While Hussain kept walking with three other men, I chose to step back and look behind me. I remembered these houses very well and each and every person's name who lived in here.
"Stop it!"
"I said come here right now! I swear I won't talk to you"
"Iqra Api dekhein na isse."
"I'll tell Ami if you two don't stop right now!"
In her attempt of climbing over the wooden bench, her foot strangled between the two wooden bars. I watched her fall as a scream escaped from my lips and I grasped on to the iron bar in front of me.
Within a blink, it was all gone. Vanished in thin air.
Nothing but a garden, finely coated with dust and spider webs, was left behind.
"Damn, here you are," I flinched as someone spoke beside me. I looked up to find Hussain gazing right through me. His face that held a faint smile, frowned at me and I quickly looked away to calm myself down.
"You like this house?" he asked me and I looked back at him.
I couldn't help but, nod. Of course I do; its abba's dream after all. He wants this house back where his thirty years' worth of memories are locked.
"I'll get it one day," I told him and he smiled at me. Like he believed that I could do it. I wonder why he didn't laugh it off like others do.
"I am sure you will," he whispered, running a hand through his hair.
From the corner of my eyes, I saw a few ladies coming in our direction and I quickly looked away, strongly hoping for them to not notice me. But, when was I lucky enough?
They came and stood right behind me, calling my name so cheerfully like we were childhood buddies. No, these ladies were just another bunch of gossip queens who would attend kitty parties once every month and rant about literally everything in life that has absolutely nothing to do with them.
"Asalam Alaikum!" I greeted them despite my heart constantly telling me to run away. They greeted me back with warm fake smiles. Even if those weren't fake, nothing about these people felt real anymore.
I could feel Hussain's eyes on me. Thanks to Faisal bhai, who came to my rescue, "chachi, abhi thora sa busy hein. Madiha aap sab se baad main milegi, okay?"
The ladies gave him a look before bidding their goodbyes and disappearing. No, none of them were his real aunts, it's just the way we have grown up to greet the adults around us.
"Uh, sorry I am late, I just had some where really important to be," Faisal bhai said to Hussain. He nervously chuckled, stealing a glance at me, and I smiled. I know what might have kept him busy today.
"Nah, it's all cool," Hussain shrugged and Faisal bhai smiled. "Since you have already talked to them, let's go. We have a reservation."
"Reservation?" I asked, frowning. We were going to go home after this, right?
"Reservation," Hussain smiled and walked ahead. I rolled my eyes.
He knew this was coming up. Liar!
I turned to faisal bhai and asked him to drop me home. Instead of doing as told, he chuckled and told me to tag along.
Ugh.
~~~HUSSAIN'S POV~~~
Looking out of the open window, I sniffed the evening air as soft music played in the background. While Faisal chose to drive, I sent my driver home. I could have drove for these few minutes and used them to relax myself but, still being a strange to this city, I let Faisal handle the wheel.
Our journey soon ended as faisal parked the car and stepped out. He opened the door for Madiha before giving me a warning look. I chuckled as I knew what this look was all about; Madiha was quite pissed at us for dragging her here. But honestly, I believe she could use the rest of her day to just chill. Over the past few weeks, I have understood her enough to know that the moment she will get home, she will be well into the household work.
The gate keeper opened the glass door for us. The first thing that caught my eyes as we entered, were the carved art pieces on the wall and the royal interior.
Reaching our table first, I pulled the chair out for Madiha. She shot me a glare while I smiled at her as she took her seat. I looked at Faisal and he shook his head, silently chuckling.
"Three chicken and sweet corn soups," we all settled for the same thing and placed our starters' order. The waiter went away and Faisal turned to me again.
"So, how was the trip?" He asked, no one in particular. "Amazing!" Madiha and I replied in unison. I instantly looked at her and found her already staring at me.
While I ended up fitting a quick laugh there, she chose to add, "except the part where Hussain went missing and we lost the track."
What the-?!
"Well, because I went to look for Arif who got lost because of you," I added, making a face at Madiha and she gasped. "I told him to come with you. Not my fault you didn't see him sitting there when you walked past him."
Uff yeh larki!
"Well-"
I was interrupted by someone clearing their throat. I looked at Faisal and scowled at him while he smirked at me. He didn't say anything; just smirked.
My focus shifted to the waiter who came and kept our dishes on the table. Soon, we were well into our soup but, no one spoke until it was time to order dinner. Madiha didn't really select any dishes but she was quite picky while filling her plate. She hardly ate.
Definitely not an ideal teacher.
~~~MADIHA'S POV~~~
I should have gone home from school. Tagging along with Hussain was a bad idea as I don't think I wanted to visit that place. Well, I didn't know he would end up going there. I guess it was bound to happen.
Oh well...
I was the last one to finish my dinner even though I hardly took anything. I just didn't feel like eating at all.
While I followed Hussain outside, Faisal bhai went up to pay at the counter. Sucking in the cold air, I shivered slightly, feeling a lot better all of a sudden. I guess all I needed was a little bit of space.
Suddenly I heard soft breathing next to my ear and my head snapped in it's direction. Hussain smiled at me with his face inches away.
"Jacket?" he suddenly whispered, making me flinch.
I rolled my eyes and stepped away, "rehne dein, aap fir shuru ho jaayeinge... Movies yeh, movies woh... huh!"
He laughed a little and brought his hand forward, maybe to pinch my cheek. I threw my warning look at him and he awkwardly stepped away.
"Where to now?" Faisal bhai came out and asked.
"Home!" was my instant reply but, if only Hussain would let me be.
"Stop being such a bore teacher ji!" Hussain interjected.
"I am not boring!" I gasped, Looking at both of them. Hussain smirked at me, while Faisal bhai chuckled.
Ugh! Men..
"We are going for kulfi falooda that's it," Hussain announced and I instantly looked at Faisal bhai, secretly hoping that he would drop me home.
But, before he could say anything, Hussain added, "he works for me, he listens to me! Jisse ana hai aao, baki ghar jao."
Hussain walked over to the car and Faisal bhai followed. I huffed as Faisal bhai got in the front seat. Well do I have a choice at this hour?
Groaning, I walked up to them and Hussain opened the back door for me. He gave me teasing smile. Of course! It was clearly yelling in my face; calling me a loser...... And boring.
It didn't take us long to reach our next destination and all three of us jumped out of the car. This time, Hussain chose to go inside and order while Faisal bhai sat outside with me.
I gulped as I realised that we were alone for at least a good long five minutes. Then came exactly what I was dreading.
"Kaisi ho?" he finally asked and I briefly closed my eyes.
"Waisi hi jaise aap hein," I replied shortly after. He frowned at me before taking a deep breath, "yeh kya jawab hai?"
"Yeh kya sawal hai when You know what my answer is every time?"
"You know you can't hide from me, right?" he asked and I released a sigh. "I am not trying to. You know me better than anyone else now."
He just stared at me for a few seconds, his eyes reflecting disappointment. I silently lowered my eyes and fiddled with my fingers.
"Insurance ka kya hua?" he questioned me again and I looked up, sinking deeper in my chair. "Kal meeting hai. Lets see."
After many requests they gave me an appointment of exactly four months after my last one; the one when they kicked me out and refused to listen whatsoever.
"I would have come along but I have to meet Aziza. It's her day tomorrow," Faisal bhai smiled down at his hands that were kept on the table. That's what he was busy with today.
I chuckled at how he slightly blushed, even with the gloss in his eyes, "nope, she needs you more me. It's her birthday after all."
"Twenty..." his voice trailed off as he gulped. I kept my hand on his' as I knew exactly how he felt. "Twenty fifth."
"Uh, yeah," he chuckled, quickly putting up a smile and I smiled back, supporting his effort. I know how much effort it takes.
"And tell her I'll be visiting very soon!" I added and he shook his head, still smiling.
"You have grown up so much Madiha! Kahan hai woh larki jo ghar se sirf college jaane ke liye nikla karti thi?"
Hussain joined us again before I had a chance to answer that. I pulled my hand back and sat straight.
Even though I didn't answer, we both knew very well where that Madiha disappeared to.
