~~~HUSSAIN's POV~~~
"Haan mere bhai I will be there on time. Now hang up and let me find the file," I groaned as Faisal lectured me about the meeting that was in two hours.
I know he is far more organised than me but apne boss ko aise koi ulta seedha sunata hai bhala?
"Fine, be there as soon as you can and do read the file before signing," he ordered and I rolled my eyes, going through my bags.
"Bye mommy!" I commented as I pulled the phone away from between my head and shoulder and ended the call.
Releasing a loud sigh, I flipped my bag upside- down and there, in a messy pile of clothes, I finally found it. Damn! I need to put all this stuff in the cupboard too! Ek akele larke ko kya kya karna parta hai.
I chose to read the file over breakfast so I picked up my briefcase and headed outside. Just as I descended downstairs, I saw some shadows by the main door. I frowned when I heard Madiha's voice.
"Wasim Chacha please, I don't have that much money on me right now," she whispered to someone as I slowly climbed down the rest of the stairs.
"Jaise Adil ko diye waise mere bhi paise wapis kar do. Waise bhi kitne mahine ho Gaye," A man with a short grey beard said. His half bald scalp and wrinkled face suggested that He was quite old.
"Exactly, I just paid him and now I don't have fifty thousand. I just have twenty. Please give me a few days I'll arrange your money," she pleaded, handing him a packet and my frown grew deeper. Who is this man?
He snatched the packet and opened it. I watched him as he counted the money, "pata nahi kis manhoos din tujhe apne paise diye the maine."
He finished counting and looked up with a crooked smile on his face, "teen din bad aaunga. Agar nahi diye paise toh iss baar tere abba se nikalwaunga."
"N-No please!" Madiha joined her hands together while he chose to ignore them, "don't tell abba anything, you know he is a heart patient. Uncle please!"
"Theek hai theek hai," he grunted while Madiha stood there with her head hung low.
"What's going on?" I found myself asking and Madiha looked up at me. She looked shocked and had tears In her eyes.
Quickly looking away, she wiped her eyes and looked at me again, "nothing, please leave."
I frowned.
"So he is the new guy in town," the man behind her asked and Madiha looked at him. "Yeh... Wasim chacha... He is our new paying guest."
"Jawan larki ke hote hue...." Wasim mumbled loud enough and shook his head, "khair mujhe kya?" I am not sure if I want to use the word 'uncle' next to his name or not.
"Teen din!" He said in a stern tone to Madiha, "or else book a bed in the hospital for Jabir. I don't care. Iss ghar main bhi rehna mushkil kar dunga!"
He was throwing himself in Madiha's face. Does he not have any manner? Larkiyon se baat karne ki tameez nahi hai zara bhi.
"Ek minute," I said as I approached him, "what's up with your attitude Han?"
"Beta, apne kaam se kaam rakh," Wasim grunted at me. Too much anger for his age.
"Uncle ji, gussa sambhal kar rakhiyein. Kaheen aapke liye hi bed book na karna par jaye," I voiced my thoughts with a smirk on my face. Wasim glared at me.
"Hussain what are you doing?" Madiha hissed at me and I looked down at her, "he is abba's brother!"
"Brother? Aise hote hein bare bhai?" I spat back at Wasim and he turned to madiha. Pointing his finger at her, he growled, "tell him to shut up!"
I took a step forward and stood between him and Madiha, "jo bhi kehna hai mujhse kahein!"
However, he completely ignored me and looked past me. Madiha stepped forward again, and I looked at me side, where she was standing, "I am sorry Wasim Chacha. He doesn't know anything."
Wasim grinned at me, showing off his yellow teeth, "bacha hai." Then he turned to Madiha, "But, someone has to pay. Tomorrow. I'll see you tomorrow."
"What? no! I can't arrange thirty thousand in a day. Chacha please!" Madiha gripped on to my forearm. I am sure she didn't realise it herself.
Wasim backed off without listening to her and that's when I stepped in again, "aaj hi le jaayein apne paise."
Wasim turned to look at me and frowned. I kept my briefcase down and opened it. I pulled out my cheque book and signed a blank cheque. Throwing it in face, I said, "yeh lein aur dafa ho jaayein."
Not so much to my surprise, that man actually bent down and picked up the cheque before walking out.
"How dare you," Madiha grunted beside me and I frowned at her, "I could have handled him. Teen din mein paise arrange kar leti main!"
"I didn't want that man around this house so I paid him instead. No big deal," I shrugged, still frowning. Why is that such a big deal for her?
"Paise maine liye the aapne nahi. You were not supposed to pay!" She said, shooting me angry stares.
I sighed, "look, same thing ok? You can pay me instead and at least I won't harass you about that money ever. Just pay me whenever you can."
She still didn't look convinced so, I added, "fine, I'll deduct that money every month from the rent. Cool?"
"You-"
"Ah! ready for work both of you?" Madiha's expressions softened instantly as we heard Jabir uncle's voice.
She went over to him with a smile. Fake smile. "Yeah, I was just preparing breakfast," she said to him and turned to me, "Chalein."
Oh phew! She calmed down.
Not really.
"We are not done talking," she whispered just as I walked past her.
The breakfast went on like normal. No talking and just eating. While I silently read my file, I could feel the back of my neck burning from Madiha's gaze. I bet she wanted to murder me. But, I still didn't see why I shouldn't have given that money to Wasim.
Keeping my plate in the washbasin, I washed my hands and fixed my coat in the mirror that was placed in the living room. Looking down at my tie, I wondered how I am supposed to tie it around my neck. Shehry made two for me before I boarded the plane and I made Faisal help me with the black one. However, none of them will go with this shirt that I am wearing and I have never tied this thing before.
Honestly, school ones used to be fun; just wrap the elastic around your neck and clip it on to its other end. Easy peasy.
"What happened?" Aunty's voice snapped me out of my daze and I looked at her. "Woh.. I don't know how I am supposed to tie this thing."
Uncle, who sat beside her, chuckled, embarrassing me to hell and back. How disappointing; I am here to handle my dad's business but, I can't even tie this stupid tie. Well, dono hi kaam mujhse nahi hotey.
"Arrey... Uh," he turned to the door and yelled out for Madiha. She came running with her handbag on her shoulder and books in her hand. Always on her toes.
"Jee abba?" She asked and uncle looked at me. "Zara Hussain ki help kar do."
Madiha looked at me as I slowly slid the tie off my neck. I couldn't risk her tying it while it was still around my neck. Kya bharosa? Gala hi daba deti. She walked up to me and I cleared my throat and thoughts. I handed her my tie and she wrapped it around her neck, almost like playing around with it. Next thing I knew was that it was magically ready for me to wear.
"Thanks," I mumbled and she nodded, turning away. Picking up her bag again, she left the house.
I picked up my briefcase and ran after her. Maybe I could drop her to school and that would break the ice between us?
"Madiha wait! I am going down that side too. I'll drop you!" I called out as I pressed the button on my car's remote.
She turned around but, didn't look at me, "no thanks. You have done enough already."
"Can you please stop that? I had the money, I paid. No big deal!" I rolled my eyes.
"No, it is a big deal!" She raised her eyes and looked directly into mine, "to pay off the bank I had to beg in front of Wasim Chacha for some money! And now to pay him off, I ended up getting a loan from you. It's a damn big deal for me, Hussain!"
"This... This cycle just doesn't seem to end! Kya zaroorat thi aapko tang arane ki? Please! Paying guest ho, woh ban kar raho," she threw her words at me and walked off.
I turned to face my car again and kicked the front tire. Damn!
~
I parked my car outside the tall grey building and grabbed my briefcase. Stepping out, I locked the door and double checked my clothes in the window's glass.
"Twenty minutes late!" Faisal hissed at me the moment I entered the office. "Whatever," rolled my eyes and walked past him.
I took a deep breath and replaced my frown with a smile as I entered the large meeting room. The smell of timber, mixed with expensive cologne and leather, welcomed me as five men and three women stood up.
"Good morning ladies and gentlemen!" I greeted them as I walked down the room, just like dad does, "sorry for the delay but we shall start now."
Putting my briefcase on the U-shaped table, I opened it. Smiling at everyone, I nervously shuffled through the mess in there. The file was not there. Did I leave it at home?
Oh shit!
~~~MADIHA's POV~~~

"Come on, he was just helping you," that's what Zariya had to say when I filled her in with this morning's incident.

"Stop taking his side!" I groaned as I marked the weekly class test. "I am not! It's true yaar, he is just what your amma said."

Farishta!

"You paid off two loans since the day he arrived," she added and I rolled my eyes. "I still have to pay him."

"Yeah but, he said he will deduct some amount every month right? So chill," she shrugged as she pushed her pile of books aside.

"Chill?" I raised my eyebrow at her, "I can't. We will be living under the same roof and every morning his face will remind me that I owe him money. Wasim chacha ki gaaliyan isse zada better thi."

Zariya rolled her eyes at me. "You know what? I need to meet principle sir," I told her and got up from my seat.

"You mean my dad?" Zariya rolled her eyes. Again. She needs to stop doing that.

"Yes, your dad," I sighed, ignoring her rude eye movement, "I'll take a loan against my salary and pay it off over a couple of months."

It's better in a way. Atleast I won't feel embarrassed since I'll be working to pay off that money instead of waking up to a reminder of that favour every morning.

~

"Madiha, you are my daughter's friend and one of the best teachers we have here," Sir said and I silently nodded, "I don't think I'll be risking this money if I gave it to you."

I smiled at his words and he mirrored it, "you can pay it off over six months' time."

"Sure sir! In fact I will try and pay you before that. Thank you so much!" I said to him as he handed me a cheque and I signed the papers.

Thirty thousand. I paid Wasim Chacha twenty already so that's what I have to pay Hussain.

I sighed in relief as I left the school and went to the bank. After withdrawing the cash, I came back home. While teaching my evening students, I eagerly waited for Hussain to come back. The moment his car parked outside the house, I went over to him.

Hussain stepped outside, looking down at the ground, deep in thoughts, and locked his car. I stood my the main gate as he walked past me. Soon he stopped and raised both of his eyebrows as he turned around.

"Oh, chill teacher ji. Thank god you calmed down," he chuckled, "ab sorry- vorry mat bolna."

I was not going to do that.

I brought the packet forward and he frowned, looking at it, "your money."

He looked up at me and raise an eyebrow, "where did you get it from? You didn't have any in the morning."

"That's non of your business, here is your money. Now I owe you nothing," I told him. I wasn't intending to be rude.

Hussain clenched his jaw and took a step forward. I blinked at him, trying to hide the fact that his expressions were scary. He was about to say something when he chose to step away and walked inside the house.
