In the Dark

Rose POV

I ran in the dark, a small light illuminating the dark foliage. The maze walls were covered, filled with greenery. At first glance they looked like shrubs, tell my hand hit the concrete beneath. I ran for what felt like miles, down a straight and narrow passage. The lighting, just bright enough to see the tops of the maze.

I finally came to a corner, turning left, my lower half suddenly bumped into something small. I stumbled back, falling on my butt. Having a hard time seeing the object in front of me. I squinted my eyes, seeing hair. What I saw was black pigtails, with pink beaded hair ties. I had hair ties like that, as a child.

The light became brighter and I kneeled face to face, with my six year old self. Dressed in a pink, shirt with green polkadots and light blue jean shorts. Her sandals, looked like the gel kind, with light up bulbs in the soles. At first glance she looked, adorable, in her little outfit. But under the surface, I saw something much more.

Her hazel eyes looked up at me, a menacing smile, stretched abnormally wide on her face. She was holding a small brown bird, in her right hand. Her fingers looked like she was squeezing the bird, rather tight. It's little body began to struggle in her grasp, chirping it's discomfort. Suddenly, her left hand wrapped around the birds head, wringing it, snapping the birds neck. A small crunch echoed in the silence, of the night.

My heart clenched, watching her kill that innocent defenseless bird. My eyes welled with tears, that little girl was a monster. That wasn't me, this isn't real. I told myself, tears heavily fell, drenching my cheek. I needed to get out of here! I turned around running back the way I came, but the darkness swallowed me. It was like I became blind, tell I turned back, seeing that little girl.

Why was I here? What did I have to do to leave?

The only light viable in the maze was that, evil little girl. Did this mean she was my way out? I mustered up as much courage as I could, walking back to her. Her menusing eyes, followed each and every step I took.

"The only way for you to leave, is to pass every challenge." The little voice, threatened.

Wiping the teases from my cheeks, I became intrigued.

"What challenges?" I asked, looking down at her. Feeing confused, interested and scared. This wasn't the real world, this wasn't even my brain. This was Desira's brain, this was the mind of a psychopath. If I wanted to leave, I needed to play the game. Desira found her way out once, terrorizing my life. Now it's my turn.

"Each corner of the maze has a challenge. A challenge from your past, helping you to become stronger. Pass the challenge, advance forward." The little girl, told me the instructions. Her eyes not blinking once.

"What happens if I don't pass the challenge?" I asked already knowing the answer.

"Then you stay here. Forever." She smirked at me, with that little evil wide stretched mouth.

"Fine! Are you my challenge?" I asked feeling annoyed.

Her eye brows wiggled, ready to play this stupid game. "Your first challenge, kill the bird. Wrong it's neck." She command her voice shifting from sweet and innocent, to a demonic baritone.

In a cage to my left, it magically appeared. Like a spot light, directing the crowds line of sight. The bird, chirped and fluttered it's little tan wings. Like it knew exactly what I was supposed to do. Unlatching the cadge door, I stuck my hand in, catching the bird trying to fly away.

I felt guilty, heart ache, and sadness wash over me. If I want to leave, I have to do this. I told myself, tightening my grip. The bird stilled in my left hand, as if almost sedated. Maybe it has accepted defeat? Taking my right hand, I curled my fingers around it's neck. The little girl, challenging, egging and harshly demanding.

"Do it."

"Kill it."

"Your pathetic."

She spit each an every statement, as if cursing my very existence.

Closing my eyes, I squeeze the birds head with my right hand, with a swift twist, the bird was dead.

An ominous chuckle, echoed though out the maze. That evil little girl, was the devil. Laughing at a poor birds death. To me that make her a cowered, makes her pathetic, not me.

"Challenge one, has been completed." Her dark voice cheered, clapping her hands like the child she is.

The maze foot was dirt, so I did what any sane person would do. I crow head down, still holding the birds dead body, in my left hand. With my right, I dug my fingers into the soil. Catching the attention of the evil little girl.

"What do you think, you are doing!?" She chastised.

But I passed the challenge, I didn't need her approval any longer.

"Doing what's right."

Carefully placing the little birds body in the small hole. I delicately and diligently buried it's little body, with the respect it deserved. But now it's free, free to fly, free to chirp, free to be. No longer cadged in the mind of a psychopath.

I will do what needs to be done, but I will not loose my values, or my morals. This may be Desira's maze, but I'm not going to be the mice looking for cheese. I'm going to be the rat, who fights for what she want, destroying everything in my path.

She wanted to punish me, but you can't punish those whom have done nothing wrong.

"Dear God, help me along my journey, give me the strength and will power I need to be set free. Amen."

Down the maze I marched, ready for my next challenge. Bring it bitch.
