Kitna anokha bandhan hai ye
Teri meri jaan jo ek hui
What a strange relationship this is,
Our two souls are now one..
Anaaya x Hassan.
Anaaya stood outside the building, unable to get through the glass doors, freezing as she tightened the shawl around her neck.
If it weren't for Pakistani Pashmina shawls, she would have turned into an ice queen. Literally.
She knew the tower was locked and Hassan was probably inside, still working but somehow she had decided to come here, at bloody four in the morning.
She pulled out her phone, sending him a quick text.
It's fucking freezing out here. Can you let me in.
His response came almost instantly.
What the hell? Wait, I'll ask Diana to let you in.
Who the fuck was Diana though? She thought to herself.
It hardly took 'Diana' a few minutes to come downstairs and she dialled a number on the machine latched near the door, giving access to her.
Anaaya quickly walked inside, taking in the warmness of the building. Newyork's winter wasn't something she had experienced before.
She wasn't the one to get jealous, but she didn't understand why the hell was she here with her husband at four in the morning?
She understood the complexity of their work but the wife inside of her felt slightly jealous at this hot woman working with her husband at such a time.
They rode the elevator together, Diana gave her a small smile, which she gladly returned.
She got out of the elevator, entering Hassan's firm.
The place was lit up even at this time of the night, she spotted Hassan in his office, who upon spotting her, stood up and walked towards her.
She had already entered his office.
"What are you doing here? Is everything alright? Why aren’t you with the kids?" Hassan glanced at her with concern.
"Everything’s fine. The kids are okay, they're with my mom and Maggie."
Her mother and father had decided to visit them from Istanbul a few days ago.
"You know I hate sleeping alone." She enlightened him, falling into his warm embrace.
His arms always provided her with so much comfort, so much warmth that all of her worries disappeared.
"It’s four in the morning, tell me why did you think it was a good idea to come?" He questioned again, pulling back to focus his eyes on hers.
Anaaya clicked her tongue.
"I couldn't sleep without you. You know I always get worried when you don't come home early."
She told him.
She leaned in close to his ear.
"And you left me all naked and deprived yesterday. Didn't you?" She accused, he laughed out loud.
"I can't even comment on that one, darling. But you really should go get some sleep, it's gonna take me a while."
His tone was soft and filled with care but she still shook her head as she went and sat on his comfy leather seat.
She leaned against the chair, closing her eyes for a while.
"So, Diana? Hmm.." She murmured with a smile playing on her lips.
She opened her eyes to see his reaction.
"She's my new secretary." He replied after a while.
"She's beautiful." Anaaya commented.
"She is." He agreed.
She narrowed her eyes at him, causing him to chuckle.
"Why's she here till so late?"
"Are you jealous?" He raised his an eye brow, somewhat amused by his wife's interrogation.
"Just curious." She said as a response.
"I think you are."
He smiled with satisfaction, seeming to be relatively entertained at the fact that his wife had the tendency of getting jealous, even after the whole Lisa and Ahmad incident.
"Ugh forget it. Can we go home now? I would like to sleep." She commented, Hassan shook his head.
She took a notice of his dark and tired eyes, the bags under them. He was obviously sleep deprived.
"You go home, the driver will drop you. I have to finish this right now."
"Hassan, the work can wait." She tilted her head, not liking how he appeared drained and exhausted.
She got up from her chair and he noticed how hard it was slowly becoming for her to do so, even though she was only four months due, she still looked pretty much pregnant.
"It can’t." He disagreed, turning to face his laptop, his fingers instantly typing away at the keyboard.
Anaaya walked around his large office, sighing and yawning as she let him work.
"Anaaya, please get some sleep, go back home."
He sighed, earning nothing but a shrug from his wife.
"You need to rest, Anaaya. It's no good for the baby."
"Hassan, you need to rest too."
She shook her head. She knew that if he didn't come home with her right now, she won't see him for atleast the next eighteen hours.
He was a workaholic. So was she, but she was on leave since the past week. And all she wanted to do was spend some time with him.
"Hassan!" She exclaimed causing him to sigh.
"Okay, just ten minutes and we'll go home. Okay?" She nodded happily, sitting calmly by the sofa as she saw him work.
Eyes focusing on the screen as Diana came inside, noting down all that he kept telling her, ten minutes turned into twenty, and then twenty turned into thirty.
She still waited ten more minutes, as her eyes fought with heavy sleep.
"Hassan.." She trailed off, looking at him with half closed eyes.
"I know love, come on..let's go." He finally mumbled, standing up from the leather chair.
He sighed, glancing at his laptop with tired eyes, he shoved it in his bag, picking up his cell phone.
"Come." He gestured, putting his hand on the small of her back, guiding her forward.
"Go home, Diana. I'll see you at ten." He said loud enough for the woman to hear.
She nodded. "But my worktime is seven thirty?" She questioned back.
"Aww, Mr hot shot lawyer is giving his secretary two hours off after keeping her awake till five in the morning. So sweet."
Sarcasm dripped from her tone and Hassan stared at her for while, eyes raised.
Since she was ahead of him and they had stopped, he leaned against her, his head almost on her shoulder.
"Sarcasm with your husband? Not nice, sweetheart." He whispered in her ear.
"Go home, Diana. I'll see you at ten." She mimicked his tone, laughing.
Diana chuckled loudly, but then suddenly went quiet upon spotting her boss glaring at her.
Hassan turned back around to look at Anaaya, eyes filled with sleep and amusement.
"Diana? Come at twelve." He stated, not looking at Diana but at Anaaya.
She smiled at him, hand in hand as they walked out, they quickly entered the warm car and she got close to him as they did.
The driver was still here.
Anaaya wondered why he would still keep the driver around, even at this time of the night. But Hassan had told her that he couldn't drive late night, he didn't think it was safe, since he was too tired during this time.
She put her head on his shoulder and Hassan's hand found a way to her waist as he held her.
"When is your next appointment?" He questioned softly.
"This week. And if it's not a girl, I'm gonna kill myself."
She said with a groan.
"It's gonna be a girl. I know it." He replied confidently.
She hoped so.
Anaaya closed her eyes one more time, breathing softly.
Hassan didn't want her sleeping in the car so he shook her shoulders gently.
"Next time I come home late, just go to sleep." He advised.
She shook her head.
"You've made me habitual of yourself. I can't go to sleep without you." She said with a sigh, he placed a chaste kiss on the top of her head.
"And what if I go somewhere? Then what?" He enquired playfully.
"Where will you go without me?" She shot back, smirking.
"Nowhere. I'll be lost without you."
--
She sat in front of where he was lying, cold on a bed, still. Machines were attached to his body and she knew that the doctors were right about him.
She had her head covered as she recited verses of the Quran in her head, she had always been a believer but she had never been so devoted in her prayers as she was now.
He wasn't waking up.
They didn't know why he wasn't.
How he had gone into a coma induced situation and how long it would take for him to come back from it.
So she sat there, by his side.
She had been sitting like this from the past few hours. Nothing but a blank expression on her face.
The doctors had been waiting for her to let them take this risk, she had even signed the papers, believing that Hassan would be okay.
That he would be alright.
But now that they were here, she felt scared, haunted.
What if he stopped breathing? What if he just stopped? What would she do then?
Azlaan, who was standing beside his sister in law, saw her lip wobbling and he knew how hard it was, Heck, he had been crying ever since he had seen his brother, and he never cried.
He called out her name, feigning a strong expression on his face.
While Anaaya has sat there with him, he had informed his family members about what had happened, about the doctor's risk taking and how low the chances of survival were.
A week had gone by in a blur.
She had only seen her children three times.
She loathed herself for it but she couldn't bring herself into leaving him.
But Azlaan's wife, Sarah and Maggie had been a huge help. She wanted to be a better mother but how could she be one when her husband was lying on that bed with his eyes shut.
Azlaan cupped her shoulder and Anaaya's eyes turned to look at him.
That was all it took for her. She stood up aggressively, the tears came pouring out and so she cried.
She sobbed into his chest unceasingly, hands clutching at his jacket. He held her in silence, rocking her slowly as her tears soaked his chest.
She cried like a child, blinking lashes heavy with tears, before she collapsed again, hugging the man who was Hassan's brother.
The pain was intense, her grief and fear taking over all the strength she had inside.
"Bhabhi, I know it's hard but we have to do this, there's no other way."
"What if-?" Azlaan shook his head vigorously.
"No, Bhabhi. He's gonna be okay, I know it. He's my brother and he'll be fine." He repeated his words, as if he wasn't just trying to convince Anaaya but himself too.
Anaaya nodded, gasping for breath and looking at the doctors.
She gave them a nod, a permission to go ahead. They were about to take out the tube, but she spoke out again.
"Wait, just wait." She said, holding his hand to gain some sort of comfort.
I ask your forgiveness and your help, my God. Please don't take him away from me. I can't live without him.
She made a quick prayer in her head.
"He's a father to four children, he's a son, he's a brother of four, he's a lawyer. He fights for people. He's a good person," She told them.
"He's my husband, he's the love of my life. So please, if you think, if you-" She hesitated, gulping as her voice shook with tears.
"If you think that he might not make it after you take out this tube, then don't do it. Please." She pleaded.
The doctors gave her a look of sympathy and understanding. It was Doctor Shepherd who stepped up though.
"Anaaya, yes, it's a risk. But it's a risk in willing to take." He told her.
"I think, it's a beautiful day to save lives."
He whispered, giving her a soft smile.
Dr Shepherd was always positive. Something about it made her feel better.
She nodded, leaning down, looking at Hassan.
"You once told me that you're lost without me." She whispered in his ear.
"Now here I am, lost without you." She said, her tears falling down.
"You have to be okay, alright? Abaan is waiting, the twins are waiting, Aira needs her baba." She softly spoke.
"Your Anaaya needs you, Hassan. Come back to me. Please."
She pleaded, kissing his side, just softy, not hard enough to cause any friction.
So the doctors finally moved forward and removed the tube.
