Chapter 30: There's a spider in the stall
Elena's Pov
I felt dizzy as i tried to stand on my feet. I almost fell down but I gripped the chair before me, holding myself up.
A familiar voice called me and I realized where I was, sir Antonio's office.
"Elena, are you alright? I've been calling you for some time now." He said and I quickly muttered an apology. My mind was in a frenzy. After those men covered my nose and mouth with a cloth, I couldn't remember anything else. What happened? Did I sleep off on the couch and dreamt about the whole thing? Is Jace okay? How -?
"Elena?" Sir Antonio's voice snapped me back to reality again. He shook his head at my absentmindedness and closed the file in front of his. "Is anything the matter? Is it the mission?" He asked and I shook my head.
" No sir."
"How's the mission going, by the way? I expected you to quickly conclude it since I gave you the dagger." He asked, raising his brow up. My heart thumped against my chest.
"About the mission, what if-?" I started but sir Antonio cut in.
"There should be no 'what if' Elena. Standing in that spot, eighteen years ago, was a diligent angel sent to stop the conception of that boy. To make sure his mother doesn't get pregnant." He sighed, "but he got carried away by humanity and forgot his mission. The angel was given another chance because he was the very first angel-in-training to be sent to earth. But, he became attached to that man and woman and he gave up everything he has laboured for just because of them."
"Isn't it a good thing, what he did?" I asked, my voice had become very quiet. I could barely hear what I said but Sir Antonio caught it.
"That's the problem, Elena. To you, it is, but to the people that one decision put at risk, it's not. Just a slight attempt to change a human being's fate, can cause a drastic change. As long as he is existing, many others will be put in danger. Which is why 'what if' should not be an option." He explained and I nodded timidly.
"This will be the last time we'll be meeting. The next time will be when you complete your mission." He suddenly said and I widened my eyes in surprise.
"Pardon?"
"The free time given to all angels-in-training has elapsed and now, you only have 14 days to complete your mission. The tattoo on your neck will serve as your countdown." 14 what? He got to be kidding right? "I hope to see you soon as an angel Elena. Don't try to be the good guy, just follow the order. Do you understand?" Sir Antonio asked and I slowly nodded.
"Yes sir." I replied.
"Be safe." He said and I was thrown into darkness.
I heard voices, strange voices around me. My body was stiff against the hard surface I was laying on. My hands were bound together as well as my feet. My mouth also was closed with material.
"Man you knocked her out cold." A voice said and the other person with him scoffed.
"I didn't even touch her." He paused before continuing, "I did the usual. I drugged her and put her in the van. It's not my fault she hasn't woken up yet." I recognized the voice that was speaking as the same man who I talked with at the front door.
"Damn the boss will be so mad if he finds out she hasn't moved yet. She's still alive, right?" The first man asked and I heard footsteps come closer. Someone placed their two fingers at the side of my neck and sighed.
"Yeah." The second man replied. "Boss is here, let's go." He said and I heard footsteps fade into the distance.
I slowly opened my eyes and took in my surroundings. It was a packed warehouse filled with big containers, bags, crates and gallons. Where I was kept was a small space surrounded by old dusty bags of God knows what. But on the bright side, it was quite hidden. I struggled against the ropes and I figured it wasn't even tied tightly. I loosened the ones on my feet and my mouth. Then I used , much to my dismay, my teeth to untie my hands.
A voice stopped me midway. I've heard the voice somewhere.
"Got her?" He asked and someone replied in affirmative. He was the boss, Mr Lyon. The one Jace was speaking to on the phone yesterday. I crawled closer to a sack and peeped at my abductors.
I almost gasped at the number of men there. Mr Lyon was obviously the leader as the others just lurked around him with their heads low. Something knocked my breath off my lungs. On the hands, pockets and pants of every man there was a gun. Not just the small one, but different types. Ones I've seen in books and ones I've not.
"This is almost too easy." Mr Lyon said. "Jason is racing against Mitch so the audience will definitely bet their money on Jace. Tim, make sure none of the main audience bets on Mitch, although they have no reason to." He commanded.
"Yes sir." A man, probably Tim, said.
"Sir I checked the girl's data." The one who drugged me said, "she's just a random orphan living with Ace's family. What if Ace actually wins the race because she means nothing to him? Will you let him go?" He asked and I glared at the back of his head.
"Oh she means something alright. Plus it's not like I'm going to let him go even if he wins, I'm just going to loose money." Mr Lyon said smugly. A sick feeling settled in my stomach. So he wasn't even planning to cancel the debt? So everything Jace has been doing was a waste..
I heard footsteps come closer and I saw the man that kidnapped me and another man advance closer to where I was. Alarmed, I looked around for a place to hide or something but i couldn't find anything. I quickly covered my mouth with the cloth that was previously used and loosely tied my feet together. Before I could finish binding my left hand with the last rope, I heard voices and froze. I just sat there and hoped that they wouldn't kill me because I didn't know how I'd explain it to the higher ups.
"Oh she's up." The other man said. The one that kidnapped me shrugged and took out a cigarette while the other man lighted it. The rope was around my wrists but it wasn't tied. I slowly held the loose ends and fisted my palms, hopefully they wouldn't notice it.
The other man started scrolling through his phone and a light bulb went off in my head. I remembered the card in my pocket and cooked up a plan. I tried to get their attention but it ended up in muffled because of the cloth in my mouth. The man who kidnapped me untied it and I sighed.
"I need to use the bathroom."I blurted and the two men looked at me like I was crazy. "I really need to go." I added quickly to make it look real. The men cursed under their breath and the man that kidnapped me bent to untie my feet.
"Dude, you didn't tie it properly." He said to the other man and he shrugged.
"With how chill she is with all this, I doubt she's even planning to run. Like how's she so calm about it." He said looking at me like I'm crazy.
"I know right. Many people will be screaming their heads off or attempting to run. She's smart though." He said pulling me up, " Those who try to run do not make it out alive." He said giving me a pointed look. I gulped and looked away from him.
The other man jumped to the floor beside me with a small yelp and I saw a tiny spider drop on his previously seat.
"F*cking spiders." He cursed and Mr kidnapper laughed at him.
"Hey Joe, take her to the bathroom will you? I need to make a call." Mr kidnapper told the other guy, Joe.
"Why should I?" Joe asked with a frown.
"I'll buy you drinks tonight, I promise." Mr kidnapper said before jogging off.
Joe signalled me to follow him and I did. I saw how he made sure to avoid the spider that was still on the crate he was sitting on. Interesting.
When we arrived at the back of the warehouse, I noticed a single stall at the corner.
"Hurry up in there." Joe said before taking out his phone. I nodded and entered the stall. My senses were frozen with the smell I was greeted with in the stall. I almost puked as the odour assaulted my nose.
"Spider!" I shrieked running out of the disgusting germ stall. Joe jumped and looked at me in fear. "There's a spider in the stall. Go and kill it." I told him, running behind him. He shuddered at the thought and looked at me warily.
"O..ohkay" he said.
"Here, let me hold these for you." I offered. He absentmindedly gave me his jacket, lighter and most importantly, his phone. He took a step inside and dashed out almost a second later.
"I can't, I can't, I can't." He repeated over and over again. I decided to use the last straw.
"Hey." I said stepping away from him, "don't move, it's on your.. your.." before I could complete what I was saying, Joe shrieked and ran back inside the warehouse. Perfect.
I quickly took the business card in my pocket and dialed the number with the unlocked phone.
"Here's my number, if you need anything just call"
"Hello?"
A deep voice answered and I sighed.
"Hey Frankie, it's Elena. I need your help."
