Chapter 23: So not you
"Do you think what I told Marley was too harsh? She seemed out of it in class today." I said voicing out my thoughts. Ever since the hallway confrontation, Marley hardly spoke to anyone and just ignored those who spoke to her.
"No, she needed someone to cut her down to her size." Laura responded. She placed a leather jacket on my torso and looked at it for some seconds, "it's nice, let's buy it."
"I know but what if I said too much." I added while Laura stared at a pair of matching leather pants.
"You didn't. I would've said worse if you didn't talk. I've gotten tired of her spoilt behaviour already." she replied handing the pair of leather pants to me. "Now for the perfect top.." she mused.
"What are we even doing here?" I asked as Laura rubbed her chin.
"Today is the beginning of Jace's tournament race. We have to be supportive and dress the part." Laura replied and I sighed in sadness.
"Let's just hope we are correct." I replied.
"What am I even doing here?" Cole finally asked and Laura and I turned to see him sitting on a bench.
"You are our designated driver" Laura replied before giving me a white singlet that had "Lady Boss" written boldly on it.
"Exactly, designated driver and not an escort," he whined, "we've been here since forever."
"What time does Jace's race start?" I asked and Cole looked at his watch.
"In thirty minutes time" Cole replied, "Let's go" he said taking the bags we were carrying.
*******
"You have to start from lane four so you don't arouse any unwanted suspicion." Laura wanted and Jace rolled his eyes at her from the driver's seat. We were all in Jace's car which was parked right in front of the racing arena.
"I'm not dumb you know." Jace replied making Laura ball her fist in anger. Luke's eyes widened in alarm and Cole's in amusement.
"I NEVER SAID.."
"Let's calm down, shall we?" He said trying to pat her shoulder but stopped mid-air when he saw the glare she shot him. "The race starts in ten minutes so Jace has to go." Luke added after regaining himself.
"The girls should leave the car first so no one notices they're with us" Jace added staring at me through the rear view mirror. When he saw I was looking at him, he diverted his eyes immediately. He saw that Cole was not paying attention so he nudged him and Cole slapped his hand away before saying...
"Do you think that guy bought that pretzel from anywhere close?"
*******
"The race is going smoothly with Spidex (not a typo) leading the way!" The makeshift announcer yelled into the microphone, ".. and he swerves and- oh wait! For the first time Ace changes lane and goes to lane six. Well that's new.." while he goes on to spit things I don't understand, I glanced to my left and noticed Billy clenching his jaw in anger. He threw the drink he was holding on the floor, his veins popped on his forehead. Looks like Laura and I were right after all. A loud crash pulled me out of my thoughts and the announcer yelled something that had to do with a player crashing. While this was happening, the crowed didn't even act like someone just crashed, they just yelled they're favourite's name.
Jace won the race in no time and Billy walked up to him. Billy's demeanor changed to that of a jolly fellow but Jace remained unfazed. His face unreadable and fist balled.
Cole took us back to the car and we waited for Jace. After a few minutes, Jace met us by the car. He had a very annoyed expression but when he saw me his face softened.
"This is so not you." he said referring to my outfit.
I glared at Laura and she shrugged.
I knew I shouldn't have listened to her.
"Yeah, she looks a lot better now." Cole replied entering the car. Jace opened his mouth to say something but the sound of my ringtone cut him off. I checked the caller and saw it was Jace's mum.
"We need to go. Annie is starting to get worried." I informed them and Jace nodded in agreement.
"So today went well." Luke started when we were all seated.
"Elena and I were right. The diagrams are symbols." Laura commented, "but why would they take their time to draw their plan when they could have just texted each other or talked in phone?" Laura asked sending us all into deep thoughts.
"Maybe they were trying to be discreet?" I asked unsurely.
"Let's not stress over it. The important thing is that we have a copy of their plan." Jace concluded.
*******
"Elena." Jace called in the now empty car after we dropped Laura off. I hummed in response because my eyes were starting to close. "When I said your dressing today was so not like you, I didn't mean it in a bad way." he said. I turned to him and gave him a small smile. "I am grateful that you came out of your comfort zone just to come to the race and you looked..." My eyes finally closed shut after much trial to keep it open. Thoughts of Jace clouded my mind making me drift deeper into my dream state. It was then that I realized what probably made the first angel fail in his mission, attachment.
I was getting attached to Jace Xavier Grey.
