Chapter 22: Conference of the nerds.
Laura, Cole and I are currently sitting down and I could not wait for the race to be over. Everything about the race is dangerous, cars slammed against each other and sometimes one of them just rolls off lane and crashes and people keep cheering.
"I hope nothing happens to Jace." I whispered and Cole somehow heard it over the loud noise here. The tattoo on my neck stung me immediately, probably reminding me that what I said was opposite of what I should be doing.
"He's been doing this for a long time. Nothing will happen to him." Cole said patting my head while smiling confidently.
"Here are your drinks ladies." Luke said balancing four cups on his hands.
"Where is the ' and gentleman'?" Cole asked, "I'm obviously a guy."
"Oh are you? My life is a lie." Luke said rolling his eyes.
"Thanks." Laura said taking her drink from his hand before I could also thank him, a loud cheer erupted from the crowd and we all turned towards the race track.
"Jace won!" Cole yelled excitedly and I sighed in relief.
"Oh thank goodness. Now let's get out of here." Laura said standing up.
" This place makes me feel a bit nauseous." I said truthfully. There was an awful smell in the air and a couple of weird looking people like this guy that sat in front of me, he had a hairstyle that looked like a pineapple.
"Jace!" Luke yelled and Jace turned towards us.
"Laura, Elena I need the both of you to act like you don't know us" Jace said hurriedly, " Luke, Cole, Billy is here."
"What's going on?" I asked worriedly.
"Jace, Jace, Jace" a chubby man said walking towards us, Laura took my hand and quietly took me out of there but not out of earshot, " you're turning out to be a pretty good racer for a teenager."
"What do you want Billy?" Jace asked the man.
"Well, plans have changed, the interest has become higher so the boss said you have to participate in the tournament races going on this week, he has already signed you up so all you have to so is show up." Billy said nonchalantly.
"What the f-?" I winced at Jace's choice of words, it was not good at all, "we have an agreement, you don't expect me to participate in some tournament sh-" I winced again at the word he used.
"Only God know what they are talking about" Laura mused, she must be confused after all this is the first time she's coming here and she doesn't know the full story.
"That's all he told me to say, if you have a problem you can go and meet him. I got to go, I have a date tonight." Billy said walking away but before he left a sheet of paper dropped from his back pocket, I don't think the guys saw it.
"What the f*** is wrong with that man?!!" Jace yelled raking his hands through his hair angrily.
"What was all that?" Laura asked quietly and the guys widened their eyes probably realizing we were here all along.
"It's nothing big, don't worry." Luke assured her.
"Is this useful to you guys?" I asked opening the paper that dropped on the floor. Jace immediately took it from me and scanned through it. He brought out his phone and took a picture of it.
"Let's go." Jace said hurriedly and dropped the paper back where it was.
******
"What do you think these diagrams are?" Luke asked looking at the picture on Jace's phone closely.
"Maybe they are symbols or something" Cole suggested from the kitchen, what was he even doing there?
"Can I ask a question?" I asked quietly.
"Sure, why not?" Jace replied.
"Billy is against you, right?"
"Yeah, why?" Jace asked.
"Maybe those symbols are something they might use against you." Laura said from the couch.
"I just thought of that but at the same time we know Jace might not be the only person those people are after." I countered.
"I know but we can as well look at that possibility." Laura said sitting up.
"You are right. We can try to read the symbols carrying that in mind maybe we can find something." I added.
"So this is why dad has been telling me to try to be smart." Luke whispered and Cole nodded in agreement.
"This is like a conference of the nerds. We don't understand the language they are using." Cole added.
"Can you girls translate it?" Jace asked surprised stretching his phone out to us.
"We can try." I said unsurely.
"We are not sure if what we are thinking is correct." Laura added. I took the phone and looked at the diagrams there. The first one has a picture of a keg and the number 4 was written there.
"How can fuel interrupt the race?" I asked looking at the keg closely.
"Not likely. If cars are to ride on a track filled with fuel, nothing will happen to the car. Unless they want to start a fire or somehow drain the fuel in Jace's car." Laura said with her signature serious look, the same one she had when we had to defend our literature assignment.
"They wouldn't want to start a fire. Many politicians bet serious money on this race so they wouldn't want to get in trouble" Jace said shaking his head.
"And there is no way they can harm Jace's car, it's always with us." Luke added crossing out that possibility.
"What if it's not fuel?" Cole suggested raising his hand as if he was in class.
"I also thought of that" I answered, "what if it is oil?"
"Bingo!" Laura yelled, "oil will reduce the friction in the tyres and may likely cause accident to whoever drives on it."
"Since we are done with that, what about the number?" Luke asked perplexed and Cole nodded in agreement.
"Jace, do you have anything to do with the number 4?" I asked looking at Jace.
"Yes, if this is an evil scheme then something about the target should be here" Laura said agreeing with me.
"I'm not sure.." Jace said putting his hands on his head, "Wait!.., I usually drive on lane number four. It's my lucky lane"
"So if what I'm thinking is correct.." I started looking at Laura, "there will be an oil spill in.."
"Lane number four" Laura and I chorused at the end.
"How do we know if what you girls are saying is correct?" Luke said, what is he saying? He doesn't even trust us. Laura glared at him and Luke almost choked on air, "sorry, it came out like that. What I'm trying to say is, what if this picture and stuff is just a simple grocery list or something." he said correcting himself immediately.
"There is that possibility." I said agreeing with him.
"But there is only one way to find out." Laura said smirking
"So the years I spent in highschool is a lie!" Cole cried out.
Oh boy
