Chapter 18: Lunch plans and a nervous teen.
The weekend ran by so quickly and it was now Monday. I was currently sitting in maths class and Jace was sitting right behind me focused on whatever he was doing on his phone.
"Settle down delinquents" Mr Herriington said grumpily, "we have a new student so I hope all of you get along or whatever". The new kid came in and he looked so familiar. He sat down on the seat beside me and I heard Jace groan from his seat.
"Hey, my name is Lewis." the new kid said, even his name sound familiar.
"Have I met you somewhere?" I asked him wondering where I've met him before.
"I don't know, have we met before?" He asked me smirking and before I could reply, I felt someone kicked the back of my seat.
"Hank is teaching, keep it down." Jace snapped.
"Sorry." I whispered and focused on the lesson.

"Hey Elena" Lewis said leaning against my locker.
"Hey Lewis" I replied," do you want something?"
"Look I'll just go straight to the point, I know who you really are and I'm just like you." before he could continue saying anything the bell rang, "let's meet during lunch and I'll explain everything to you." and he walked away. What just happened? What's he talking about?
"Don't you have class?" Jace asked me and I realized that he was standing in front of me for God knows how long.
"I'm heading to class now." I said walking away. I was wrapped up in worry and thought. I couldn't wait for lunch to reach already.
******
"Elena! Are you listening?" Cole said waving in front of my face.
"No, sorry" I said apologetically. It was already lunch time and I couldn't find Lewis anywhere, maybe he was just kidding, I mean Cole has called me an angel before and he was joking. Jace was just silently staring at me.
"What is he doing there?" Laura asked and I turned to see who she was talking about only to find Lewis sitting at the last table in the far end of the cafeteria.
"I thought that table is haunted" Cole mused.
"What do you mean haunted?" I asked curiously.
"It is rumored that a girl who usually sat on that table committed suicide and ever since then no one has dared to sit on that table." Cole explained eerily making the hair at the back of my neck stand. I looked back at Lewis only to find him staring at me. My phone vibrated in my front pocket drawing me back to reality.
"What about our lunch plan?"
I read the text over and over again until I realized it was probably Lewis that sent it. I looked at him and he pointed at his wrist watch signalling that he didn't have time. I decided to get this over with once and for all. I stood up with my lunch and walked towards his table.
"Elena! Where are you going?" Laura yelled in a whisper while the others just looked at me in horror especially Cole.
"I want to find something out." I said silently. I arrived at the table and Lewis smiled motioning me to sit down
"I almost thought you weren't going to come."Lewis said chuckling.
"What do you want?" I asked him immediately not wanting to waste much time.
"Impatient, are we?" He said taking a bite out of his apple, "I'm not going to beat around the bush either. I was also given a task to do here on Earth and I know you haven't been assigned to a task yet."
"Wait a minute! You are the Lewis!" I exclaimed, "everyone thought that you went missing or something because you weren't around the day we were assigned to our task!"
" How could you not recognize me?" He said pouting childishly, "I thought you would give me a warm welcome or something."
"I'm so sorry. I didn't expect to see you here on Earth, what happened?" I asked suddenly forgetting my initial fear.
"Sir Miguel sent me on an errand and when I returned everyone had already started working on their tasks so I was given a grim reaper's task since they couldn't find any one for me" Lewis explained, "Before I left, I over heard something about your task." My interest was spiked immediately.
"What did you hear?" I asked quietly.
"Nothing much but it has something to do with pretty boy over there" he said looking behind me and I traced his eyes and turned only to find Jace glaring at us.
"Do you mean Jace?" I asked just to be sure.
"Yeah, only God knows what your mission will be " Lewis said.
"It's nice talking to someone that understands what I'm going through." I said sighing in relief, "By the way, how did you get my number?"
"That Celine girl gave me your number", he said absentmindedly, "I'm no soothsayer but you need to watch out for her"
"Celine gave you my number?" I asked shocked that Celine would give give a total stranger my number.
"Yeah, I was asking around and she came willingly and gave me your number." he said. The bell rang and I stood up to throw the remains of my lunch away.
"Elena, can I talk to you for a minute?" Celine said the moment I stepped out of the cafeteria.
"But I have class now." I said avoiding eye contact with her, she still hasn't apologized for what she did on Friday.
"I'll just say it now." she said taking a deep breath, "I'm sorry for what happened on Friday, I had to put the blame on you because you recently became close to Jace so he wasn't so mad at us "
"I have a feeling you meant the exact opposite on Friday" I told her and she just had a blank look on her face, "The only reason I'm accepting your excuse is because I'm not someone that bears grudges" and with that I left for my next class.
*******
"Why are you just standing there? let's go home!" Jace said to me. School was over and Jace was getting crankier.
"Give me a sec!" I yelled back, " so what's your task?" I asked Lewis who was opening his old pick up truck.
"You've heard about the girl that committed suicide, right?" He asked trying to open the door of the truck.
"Yeah, the one that once sat on your table" I replied.
"I have to guide her soul to the after life" he said sighing heavily.
"Elena! I'm leaving without you!" Jace said entering his car and I looked at Lewis alarmed.
"I need to go, I'll call you later!" I said running over to Jace's car and luckily he stopped the car for me.
"You seem pretty close to the new kid." Jace said in a tone that sounded annoyed? Was he angry at me?
"Are you mad at me?" I asked nervously wondering what I could have done to him.
"No, I'm not. Why would I be?." Jace quickly said, was he nervous?
"Lewis is an old friend, we were just catching up." I explained, what am I doing?, He didn't even ask me.
"Oh, he's a friend." Jace said sounding relieved, "you guys seemed close and all so I thought..."
"What did you think?" I asked curiously.
"Nothing" Jace said immediately .
"Are you sure?" I asked playfully although I had no idea who he must've been thinking.
"Stop interrogating me." Jace said pouting, Jace was pouting, I can't believe it.
"I'm not interrogating you-" I said, "unless you are guilty."
"No I'm not." Jace retorted.
"Yes, you are." I laughed.
"Yes I am."
"No, you're not" wait! What just happened? "Jace how could you?!"
"I know I'm not guilty, you just said it." he said laughing out loud.
"You made me say it." I complained.
"No I did not."
"Yes you did." this moment made me wonder what it's like to be a normal human.
