2: Mikey Way Has a Secret
Mikey's pov
Standing behind the gas station counter, there wasn't a customer in sight. Gerard sat in the back doing who knows what. Out of boredom, I began to adjust my beanie, besides my hair it was the only thing concealing the one defining feature of my species.
I still don't get why I have to hide them in public... all of us are some sort of something... it's not like it's a secret... but everyone hides their real selves anyways...
Resting my elbow on the counter, my head in hand, a car pulled up. One that I hadn't seen before.
"Gerard, there's someone here."
"So? People come here all the time."
"No, I mean people people."
"Dude, it's no big deal. Just hide your ears and you'll be fine." He said as a blue haired boy accompanied by a girl in a black sweater walked through the glass doors. The boy wandered towards me as the girl walked through the snack aisles.
"Hi, me and my friend here are wondering if there's a motel of some sort here?" A motel? Maybe it's just for the night... nobody ever stays here long... all though... it is still daytime... they wouldn't need an overnight stay at this hour...
"Uh, yeah, there's an Inn, it's just straight ahead," I pointed towards the direction, "Should be to your left."
"Okay, thanks..." He said another thing or two, but I ended up looking over at their car. It's packed full! How long are they staying here?
"Uh, how long are you two planning on staying here?" I asked.
"The whole summer, if it works out." He answered, the whole summer? No one has stayed here that long in ages...
"Could I have the bathroom key, please?" He asked.
"Yeah..." I pulled it out from behind the counter and slid it to him.
"Thanks," He walked off, so I was left alone with the girl.
"Hi," She greeted.
"Hi," I mirrored, she dropped a few snacks onto the counter, and began to pull out her wallet. During all this, I began to examine her. Who are these people? They look normal, why are they here then?
"So, where are you from?" I asked as she finished paying.
"Springfield, just a few hours thatta way." She pointed.
"Cool, I'm Mikey, by the way. What's your name?"
"Y/n, and the blue haired boy is Awsten." It went quiet for a moment.
"Uhm, why'd you come to town?" I asked, desperately trying to break the silence.
"Well, Awsten and I just graduated high school. I found a map leading here in my attic, so we thought it'd be cool to come here for our last summer."
"Huh, sounds fun-" The glass doors opened as the blue haired boy stepped in.
"Y/n, I was gone for three minutes and you're already flirting with him!?" She sent him a look.
"I was not! We were just talking, that's all." Her face tinted pink.
"Really? Dude, was she flirting with you?" I shook my head, I don't think so... anyways...
"See! I wasn't!" The boy handed me back the key.
"Sure sure..." He smirked, just as the curtain separating the back room from the little store slid open.
"My GameBoy died-" Gerard stopped as he looked at the two, "Who are you?"
"I'm Y/n and this is my best friend, Awsten." The blue haired boy kindly waved.
"Oh, cool, what are you doin' in Hugh-Mann?" Gerard asked, stepping closer.
"Y/n and I just graduated, and we found this map in her attic so we decided to come down for awhile." He re-explained.
"Really!? Well," Gerard began, putting a brotherly arm around me, "Mikey here just graduated too!"
"Oh, you never mentioned that." She said.
"I didn't think it was important." The room went quiet for only a moment when Gerard spoke up.
"Well, you guys should be off now," They then began towards the door, "See ya later, and welcome to Hugh-Mann!" They waved, getting in their car, as soon as they were off, Gerard and I began talking.
"What the fuck!?" I asked.
"Nobody comes here! Especially for a whole summer!"
"Do you think they're up to something? Like, they're gonna sell us to the government? Or something?" I panicked.
"I doubt it. But it's still freaky as hell."
"Maybe we could stop by the Inn? They asked for directions there..."
"Yeah, we should do that..." He agreed, still in thought. The glass doors then opened as Frank waltzed towards us.
"Sup' guys?" The short boy asked, casually sitting up on the counter.
"Some people came in just a few minutes ago, but they aren't from here." Gerard explained.
"Whatta ya mean?"
"They aren't from here," I began, "They're human."
"What are they doing here?"
"She said it was for their high school graduation trip or something. They're staying for the whole summer!"
"The whole summer? But nobody comes here!" Frank cried.
"That's what I said! And, they're staying at the Inn. Gerard and I are gonna head over there after work."
"Why? Are you like, spying on them?"
"Maybe...?" Gerard answered.
"Well, that's not the way to go, it's so obvious."
"But, we were gonna act like we were just there to talk to Patrick," I explained, "It woulda been a whole thing."
"Dude, they're our guests, we treat them like guests," Frank said, "So, since we've never had guests before. Everything's fair game."
"So, we can spy on them?" Gerard asked.
"Did you hear anything I just said?" Frank smirked, "Of course you can spy on them, but you guys aren't being sneaky about it at all."
"We're being sneaky..." Gerard said, Frank snickered.
"Wow, I thought elves were supposed to be smart or something."
"Oh yeah, well... well... dwarves... short... dwarves are short!" I finally said.
"Nice!" Gerard high-fived me.
"Um actually..." Frank rolled his eyes, jumping of the counter and grabbing a random package of snack food.
"Here he goes again..." Said Gerard.
"I'm quite tall for my species so, you are in fact, wrong." He said, sitting back up on the counter and eating whatever it was he took from the shelves.
"Are you gonna pay for that?" I asked.
"Put it on my tab."
"Frank, this is a gas station." He sighed and slid me the buck fifty he owed.
"So, anyways, about these, people. Who are they? What were they like?"
"Well, Mikey talked to them the most."
"You talked to them!?"
"Yeah, just a little bit." I explained.
"What were they like? And, why here?"
"Well, there was a boy with blue hair, and a girl with h/c hair."
"Oh yeah, I've heard of humans having colored hair. It's some sort of genetics thing." Frank explained, confidently.
"Are you sure he didn't just, dye it?" I asked.
"Dye it!? Of course not! He's a human, they don't need dye!" Gerard looked at me, skeptical.
"You really are an idiot, aren't you?" I asked.
"An idiot?" He scoffed, "You're clearly the idiots here."
"No, you said it yourself, elves are smart."
"Yeah, they're supposed to be. Doesn't mean you two are." He snickered.
"Anyways," I began, now annoyed, "They just graduated high school, they found a map in an attic that led here, and now they're staying for the summer."
"Anything else!?" Frank asked, curiously.
"Their names are Awsten and Y/n, from Springfield, and that's pretty much it."
"Huh, what did they look like!?"
"Like... humans!? I dunno, they weren't here for that long!"
"And they're staying at the Inn?" We both nodded, "Has anyone else seen them?" I shrugged.
"Patrick's probably seen them by now, though," That was when, my phone buzzed, "Speaking of..."
Patrick: There are people here! Real people!
"He's freaking out, too."
Me: ik they came by the gas station earlier
Patrick: woah
"We should probably head over there soon."
"What about the store?" Gerard asked.
"Dude, no one has come here all day, besides those people. I think I'll take my chances." I said, jumping over the counter and heading towards the door. Frank followed close behind. Gerard was hesitant, but decided to join. Before leaving, we locked up, and jumped into Frank's truck, towards the Inn.
"Ray!" I cried, hanging out the window as he walked by.
"Mikey!?" He asked as the truck came to a stop right by him.
"Get in!" I said.
"What!? No, I gotta go to work!"
"Ray, there's no time! There are people in Hugh-Mann and we wanna spy on them!" Frank yelled. Ray hesitated for a moment, but agreed.
"What are you doing!? No! Sit in the trunk! You're too big!" Frank cried.
"What!? I can totally fit! Just because I'm a giant doesn't mean I am giant!"
"That makes no sense." I said.
"We have no time! Jump in!" Ray sighed, jumping in the trunk before we sped off. Once there, I immediately spotted their car. It's unpacked... they're really staying here... for the whole summer...
"Guys! Hey, I'm so happy you're here!" Patrick greeted, pulling us inside.
"Has anything happened?" I asked, once inside the small building.
"Yeah, they booked a room!"
"And...?" Frank asked.
"I dunno... they weren't here for that long! They're upstairs, I was gonna go check on them, if you guys wanna come."
"Wouldn't it be kinda weird if all of us went up there?" Asked Ray, eyeing Frank, assuming this was all his plan. Usually, it is all Frank trying to get us in trouble...
"This is all Mikey and Gerard's plan, I have no say in what's going on," Frank explained, holding his hands up in defense, "This plan woulda been way better if it were me, though..."
"You guys could just stand outside the door, out of sight." Patrick suggested.
"Okay, yeah, let's do that." We followed Patrick up to their room. As we got into position, the sound of laughter came through the door. Patrick stood in front of the door, but wasn't knocking.
"Are you gonna knock?" Gerard whispered.
"I don't wanna disturb them!" Patrick whispered back.
"Here, I'll just do it!" Frank knocked, then quickly stepped away, leaving Patrick standing there, awkward. The door opened, Awsten stood there, holding in laughter. Then cleared his throat.
"I'm sorry, are we being too loud?" He giggled at the last part.
"No! No, not at all. I was just wondering if you needed anything?"
"Uhm..." He looked back into the room, "We could use a few more pillows, if that's alright?"
"Yeah, yeah, yes of course I can get you those, right away. If you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask."
"Thank you," As soon as the door was shut, more laughter erupted from the room.
"I barely even saw them!" Frank whispered.
"Well I'm sorry, I usually don't spy on my guests!" Patrick said as we followed him back to the lobby.
"You never even have guests!" Frank retorted.
"What!? Of course I do! Not very often, but I do!" He said, opening a closet and pulling out a few pillows.
"You know they're staying for the whole summer, right?" Asked Gerard.
"They mentioned that, why would they pick Hugh-Mann to stay for their summer?" He asked, leading us back upstairs.
"They found a map or something." I said.
"Yeah I know that, but that shouldn't make you wanna stay a whole summer!" He then shushed us before knocking on the door again. This time, Y/n answered.
"Uhm, here's the pillows you asked for."
"Oh, thank you." She held them in her arms.
"Is there anything else?" He asked, just as Awsten accompanied her.
"Yeah, is there anywhere good to eat here?" Awsten asked.
"Yeah, just down the street is a sandwich shop. It's just called The Sandwich Shop and it's a short walk away." He explained.
"Cool, we're probably gonna head there soon, then."
"Okay, anything else?"
"No, I think that's all." She said.
"Okay, see ya around." The door then shut, and almost immediately he pulled us away.
"What the hell!?" Frank cried.
"You can't be standing there when they leave, they'll notice!" Patrick explained.
"Right, what if we went to the restaurant?" Frank asked.
"I can't go, I gotta work." Patrick said.
"Dude, no one else is coming here."
"You don't know that! Now, go on, before they see you!" He shooed us off and we were back in Frank's truck.
We had gotten to the restaurant before them, so we got a table and sat down.
"Wait, is that them?" I asked. Each boy hid behind their menus, but sent curious looks towards them.
"Oh yeah, that blue hair is totally natural."
"It is not!" Gerard said to Frank.
"That's it! I'm asking him." Frank slammed his menu down on the table and jumped up.
"Frank, no!" I whisper yelled.
"Relax, they've never seen me so it's not as creepy."
"I'm not creepy! I'm just... curious..."
"Whatever!" Frank rolled his eyes and walked towards their table, we all watched in anticipation. Frank spoke, then the boy laughed, and shook his head. They spoke a little more, then Frank walked over with his head hung low.
"You guys were right..." He sat down in shame.
"What happened!?" All three of us didn't care about our friend's idiotic hypothesis any longer and only wanted information on the foreigners.
"Well, I walked over, asked my question, and they both laughed at me. They thought I was joking. But he shook his head and said no. Then I apologized for intruding on their meal, and came back over here."
"Woah..." We all said, only becoming more and more curious.
