13: A Chill Day With Awsten
"Awsten...?" I asked, opening the door to our room.
"Hey!" He waved, sitting on the side of his bed. Our stack of Uno cards had been constructed into a house on our shared nightstand, "There you are, I was starting to get worried."
"I'm alright," I spoke, sitting on the side of my bed so I faced him, "Mikey and I went on a date. You'll never guess what happened!"
"What happened!?" He asked, now intrigued.
"Okay, so, he took me on an adventure date through the forest. Awsten, I saw fairies! There was one, on my hand." I held my hand out to demonstrate.
"Really!? What'd they look like!?"
"Like, like little lights! They were like lightning bugs but with a brighter yellow glow! It was, so cool."
"Wow..." He spoke, completely astonished.
"I know right!? And, Mikey can understand them! So we talked to them and, ah!" I fell backwards into my bed, "I wish you coulda been there! It was so magical!" He chuckled.
"Sounds like it! I didn't do much while you were out. Mostly just, waited for you to come back." I sat back up to look at him.
"Aww, you can go do stuff without me. I don't mind." He rested his head in the palm of his hand.
"Yeah, I know, but it's not as fun without you." He sadly eyed the carpet. I hummed.
"Wanna do something now?" I asked.
"Hell yeah, what're we doing!?"
"Woodland adventure?" I suggested.
"Nah, you got lost last time."
"Oh yeah! Awsten! I gotta tell you something!"
"What...?"
"When I got lost, I was actually kidnapped by a vampire!"
"A vampire!? Woah..."
"Yeah, I fell into a hole, and it led to his house! So I went inside, and he read my mind!"
"Woah..." Awsten's eyes were completely lit up, "What else happened!?"
"I was bit! He fed from me! But while he was doing that, Mikey fell through the window and saved me."
"Bit!? But I didn't see any bite mark!"
"Cause Mikey fixed it! He had this, stuff. I dunno exactly, but the bite mark disappeared!"
"Seriously!?" I nodded.
"Yeah, it was so cool."
"What'd the vampire look like!?"
"His name was Pete, he had black hair, pale-ish skin, and dark eyes. He showed me his fangs, and they were huge!"
"And he bit you!?"
"Uhuh, he did this thing that made me freeze! So I couldn't get away! But Mikey saved the day which was good."
"This just sounds like some bizarre fever dream." I giggled.
"I wish, it was absolutely terrifying."
"Geez, my days without you aren't nearly as interesting. Y'wanna know what I did while you were gone?" He motioned towards the Uno cards, "This is what I did."
"Damn, pretty fine craftsmanship."
"Thank you, now, let's go wreak havoc on the town!" He cried, jumping up. I giggled.
"Yeah!" I jumped up as well. He led the way out the door and down the stairwell.
"Hi guys, what's up?" Patrick asked, sitting at the front desk.
"We're gonna wreak havoc." Awsten explained.
"Yeah!" Patrick now held a concerned look.
"What are you gonna do...?"
"I dunno, run around, be a nuisance to someone older than us, we'll see."
"Alright, have fun then."
"See ya!" I waved. He kindly waved back as we ran out the doors.
"Race ya to the Sandwich Shop!" Awsten cried, taking off running.
"Ah! No!" I sprinted behind him. People stared, but we didn't care.
"Hahaha! I'm winning!"
"Not anymore!" I giggled, passing him.
"Fuck!"
Now, he was determined to make it to the shop before I did. With all his strength, he dashed past me while screaming at the top of his lungs. A flash of blue was the only thing I saw as he bolted past me.
"Haha!" He cried, bending down, and out of breath, "I win!"
"Yeah, but at what cost?" He began to answer, but then began coughing from running so fast, "C'mon, let's eat something."
"Mkay..." He finally caught his breath and followed me inside. We sat down at a random table, looking at the menu.
"Your face is so red." I spoke, giggling.
"Good, means I went, super sonic speed." He spoke the last part more animated, almost Jim Carey type of speech with an exaggerated smirk.
"Okay Ace Ventura, whatever you say."
"Yeah, Ace Venture, pet detective." He did a terrible Jim Carey impression as he spoke.
"Awsten, you're so bad at that."
"My name's not Awsten it's Ace Ventura, okay!?"
"I'm not gonna call you Ace Ventura." He began to speak, but a waiter came by with distinct bright pink hair and took our orders.
"I'm pretty sure that guy has a tail." Awsten spoke quietly.
"A tail?" I asked. He nodded.
"Yeah, there's like, a line in the back of his pants."
"So, you mean you were checking out his ass?"
"What!? No! No! My eyes, just, happened, to look there. Okay!?"
"Sure..." He rolled his eyes.
"Anyways, next time he comes around, just look!"
"I can't look at another guys ass! I have a boyfriend!"
"Dude, you're not looking at his ass! It's the area around his ass!"
"Ugh, Awsten, it's alright if you're gay. I-"
"I'm not gay!"
"Then why're you looking at guys ass's!?"
"I'm not looking at his ass!" He cried, "Anyways, that man has a tail. Just look."
"Fine! I'll look at his ass."
"Thank you." Our waiter walked by our table, I glanced at the guys behind. Awsten was in fact, right. There was a tail shape indented into the back of his grey pants.
"Okay he has a tail. Very cool."
"See! I was right. And I wasn't just looking at his ass."
"Yeah, you can believe that." I giggled. He glared at me as the waiter came by and gave us our food.
"Thank you," I said.
"Yeah, thanks," He walked off, "I wonder what kinda creature he is."
"Geez, Awsten, just take him to bed already!"
"I'm not gay!"
"Never said you were," I snickered, taking a bite of my food, "Maybe you're bisexual, or pansexual if you prefer. Maybe you're just curious. Who am I to judge?"
"If we weren't in public right now I'd rip you to shreds."
"Yeah, I know. That's why it's happening in public." I said with a smile. He leaned back in his chair, keeping his gaze on me.
"Dude, you may be my best friend, but geez you can be annoying!"
"Awsten, I'm messing with you. I know you're not gay." He's only ever had crushes on girls...
"Good!" He smiled.
"Speaking of, have you met any girls around?"
"No, I don't think they like me."
"Why?"
"Cause, I'm not, magical."
"Magical!? I'm not magical and I got with Mikey."
"Yeah, but that's different. He actually wanted to talk to you. They do not," He then rested his head in his palm and sighed, "I dunno if I wanna go out right now anyways."
"Why not?"
"If I say, please don't make fun of me."
"Alright..." He took a deep breath, and shut his eyes.
"I still like Stacy." Still!? Ugh...
"Really?" He nodded. It went quiet for a moment before I began speaking again, "Awsten?"
"Yeah?"
"Why do you like Stacy?" I asked, genuinely wanting to know.
He opened his mouth to speak, but our waiter came over, took our plates away, and had us pay. We left the restaurant before walking around town.
"So? Stacy?" I asked. He smiled to the sidewalk.
"I dunno I mean," His gaze went to whatever was in front of us now, "She's really pretty, and she's funny."
"Anything else?"
"Yeah! Just, gimme a minute to collect my thoughts!" He sighed, "Her laugh is so cute. I love her laugh. I also like the way she says my name. Awsten." He mimicked her voice. I giggled.
"Go on..."
"Uhm, she's also super smart! She was always really good with math when I was in her class. Also, she does this thing were she pierces her lips," He squeezed his lips together tight, "Like dis!" He spoke while still demonstrating. I giggled as his lips went back to normal.
"Wow, and you say I'm head over heels."
"I'm not done! When we were going out, ugh, she used to do this thing! She'd like, hold both my cheeks, like this!" He squashed his cheeks together with his hands, demonstrating, "And then, do this!" He rubbed his fingers against the skin before pulling away, "It was so nice! She was so nice..." Saddened, he brought his gaze back to the concrete.
"And I know what you're gonna say," He began again, "I should be over her, we dated for a month n' all, but, she was really something."
"You okay?" I asked. Awsten completely ignored my question.
"Do you think she'd ever go out with me again? Like, if I called her up?"
"I dunno, isn't she in Paris?"
"Uhuh, but I mean, after summer." I hummed.
"I'm not sure."
"Why?"
"Cause, Stacy is so, different from you. I dunno I just don't see it," He glared at me, "What!? I'm not trying to be an ass. She just, is very different from you. It makes me kinda unsure."
"But not impossible!"
"Yeah, I mean, who knows? Maybe it will work out." I spoke, trying to stay positive for my friend.
"Maybe I should text her," He thought out loud, "Do you think she'd respond?"
"I dunno, she's all the way in Paris. They're in a different time zone there."
"Right," He thought for a moment, "What time is it there right now?" I shrugged.
"How am I supposed to know?" He shrugged.
"I'll just text her when we get back to the Inn."
"Alright," I sighed, "Wanna head back now?"
"Yes please," He spoke.
"Okay cool," We began walking for about five seconds before I yelled, "Race ya!" And bolted down the street.
"Goddamnit!" He picked up his pace behind me.
"I'm gonna beat you this time!"
"There's no way! I'm gonna beat you this time!" I cried, we passed by a few people who stared, but we didn't take any notice to them.
"No! I'm gonna win! Ah!" He screamed at the top of his lungs, and sped right pass me.
"Seriously!?"
"Yeah!" He yelled, quickly going inside, I was right on his tail.
"Oh hi guys-" Patrick began.
"Can't talk racing!" I explained, running through the lobby, and passing Awsten up the stairs.
"Haha! I've beat you!" I exclaimed, standing at the door. He bent down, out of breath, once again.
"Ugh, I was... was so close!" I opened the door, and he tiredly fell into the carpeted entry way.
"You okay?" I asked, shutting the door. He hummed a 'yes'.
"Mkay," I stepped over him and sat on the floor in front of his face, "You gonna text Stacy?" He nodded.
"Gimme a minute..." He spoke into the carpet, "I used up all my energy."
"And you still didn't win? Wow..."
"But I won the first time! And, I was close!"
"Sure..." He sighed, then pulled out his phone. I brought my head over the top so I looked at the screen upside down, "What're you saying?"
"Hey, it's been awhile, wassup?"
"Eh, that's okay."
"Doesn't matter, already hit send."
"Oh shit, it'll probably be awhile till she responds."
"Yeah, and I'm sure my phone's gonna be weird with it like yours is."
"Right, whatta we do now?"
"Wait until she responds."
"Are you nervous?"
"Eh, this isn't my first time trying to talk to her again. I'm not too nervous. Just a bit." I hummed.
"What'd you think she'll say?"
"Nothin' much, what about you?" He answered, "Or, something along those lines."
"Wow, how many times have you done this?"
"Too many to count..." I hummed.
"Wanna watch tv while we wait?"
"Yeah, I'm gonna put my pajamas on." I moved my head so he could get up without bonking into me.
"Mkay, I will too."
We did just that. Once we were done changing, we sat together on Awsten's bed, closest to the bathroom, where he put an arm around me. I rested my head on his shoulder, like any other night we'd hang out. He checked his phone about a dozen times a minute, but I didn't mind. Ugh... poor Awsten... he really likes her... I hope it works out for him... wether he ends up with her or not...
